Rip off! I ordered a large goat meat platter and ended up receiving cabbage as the main item with goat meat on the side. My order was supposed to come with mac and cheese, potato salad, and rice, but they substituted the rice with cabbage without telling me. When I asked for potato salad, I was told they were out, but no one explained the substitution or asked what I wanted instead. There was also no rice under the meat or cabbage, which is normally part of the dish. The whole plate was a disappointment, and at this point I probably won't recommend anyone else eat here. We drove 30-45 minutes from home to pick up the order because it was supposed to be cheaper in person, but instead of the usual ~$24.99 I was charged $30 with no explanation. The goat meat platter has always been my go-to comfort meal from this place, especially after long days at work. With inflation and the government shutdown, I haven't been able to treat myself in a while--and today, when I finally had the chance, the experience was completely ruined. This was my 4th and last visit to this place. I wanted to like this place so badly because of the limited vegan options in Hampton/Newport News area. But, this place is horrible. How do they stay in business. I waited about 45 mins for 2 eggrolls and they were terrible. I got the soul food and a jackfruit eggroll. The "soul food" had mac and cheese, collard greens and yams. The noodles were mushy and tasteless in the mac and cheese. The yams were dark brown because of too much nutmeg or allspice. They were awful. The collards were mid. The jackfruits tasted old and look re-warmed. Please do better. This is not a good representation of vegan food. It was so disappointing. The two young guys at the register didn't seem to have a clue about anything. Every question I had, they had to run in the back and ask someone. My son picked up three meals for us. The chicken and rice are EXTREMELY dry. He asked for extra sauce for the meals and not only did we not get it, but it appears as though they put VERY little on the chicken. I just finished serving for my church's Saturday service to open the container to find this. My dinner is basically ruined which is odd because I have not had u Issues with them before. Hopefully this is just an off day... Unfortunately they close at 8. I have had food from here before and it is generally good, but you may want to exercise caution if you are ordering toward the end of the day. I am going to take this back up to the restaurant Monday as they are closed on Sunday. I hope they will replace this meal. Again, maybe an off day so don't let my bad experience determine whether you try them out. THIS IS FOR THE VEGAN SIDE I've been to this place three times and each time it's a horrible experience. They have absolutely no customer service and awareness that people that come into the establishment helps in its existence. Ordered online today and went to pickup and they were closed, lol! On top of giving them a third chance....they also don't have the brainpower enough to turn off their online payment acceptance when their hours online and on their actual door don't match up. It's laughable at this point and it's places like this that make it increasingly difficult to support black establishments. As soon as I walked in I was asked if already knew what I wanted looked at the menu had a questions about how the menu worked. The food was saucy, flavorful, and well portioned. I got Oxtail, cabbage, peace and rice. My partner got jerk chicken (regular flavor) and plantains. Husband wanted to get Jamaican on his bday so he chose this place. I ordered curry chicken and he got the oxtails. The curry chicken to me was ok the curry was a little thicker than usual making it a little bitter but still it was okay and I love that they add potatoes, a lot of places don't. You also definitely get your moneys worth on the portion. I got a medium and it was more than enough. My husband's oxtails on the other hand were tough. You couldn't break the meat off with a fork, he had to pick them up with his fingers to eat them. You couldn't even stick the fork in them. He did mention it and the lady bought out a very small sample for him to try to see if that was tough but she said it came from the same batch but he didn't try it so since he didn't I don't know what her point was going to be. Anyway I had also bought to pieces of cake, chocolate and the pineapple upside down cake. We tried the chocolate and it was dry, couldn't tell if our eyes were closed if that was chocolate and the middle was runny (like a thin watered down chocolate). So we both tried the other cake I spit it right out into my napkin. It crumbled in my mouth dry and lumpy or spongy idk but it was horrible. I am really upset with myself that I didn't go ahead and bring that to their attention and ask for my money back at least. I just hate confrontations, people were there. I was in town and thought I would give this restaurant a try. It's a couple of blocks from Hampton's University campus and was close to my contracts office. I've never paid $20.00 for Curry Chicken. NEVER! I've eaten Jamaican food in at least fifteen different states and grew up in Miami Florida. Overpriced is an understatement! The food was just okay. It's not the worst I've had. Listen! I've been coming here for years and I've never been disappointed. Now the prices jumped up a couple of dollars at the beginning of 2023. The lunch special that ran about $8 is now $10 when paying with a debit or credit card. They do pass off the credit card fees to the customer so be prepared to pay and additional 3.99% to use your card. That being said, it is still the best lunch special for the quality, quantity and over all taste of the food. I religiously get stewed chicken, collard greens and cabbage with the plantain and a half lemonade and half sweet tea. Bomb!!! More importantly, though, it was salty and tough! Although there is a sign which states you must bring back the product if dissatisfied, when it was brought back, the owner was NASTY and refused to refund the $36.00 less the fee!!! I came across this restaurant on my drive down and it was a happy surprise! I was looking for a place to eat in that shopping center and my husband found this cafe! We went inside and ordered goat curry and meat pie. It was so warm that I had to wait so I didn't burn my tongue! First the woman puts them in a side dish then she pours them into a larger container. I also order a small juice. Mind you prices are not posted anywhere so she says $12 at checkout. I am accustomed to health food prices and figured that was accurate for a side and drink but no it was only the chickpeas. The drink was another $9. I asked why chickpeas were $12 for a side? She replies we don't have sides only entrees. I say well you had a side container which you filled up at first however if you couldn't meet my order then you should tell me before you change it on your own. I paid but will not return here. $12 for a $1 can of chickpeas is way overpriced whether it is labeled a side or entree. Oh but you don't know because the staff makes up portions and pricing. A little after eating the oxtail some more I tasted that same sweet taste that I was tasting with the cabbage and Mac and cheese. I'm not sure what kind of seasoning they are using but those oxtail needed some onions, peppers, spices...something, but whatever sugar like thing they are using within all the food is nasty. Sugar DO NOT go in Mac and cheese for sure and if you put it in cabbage it needs to balance out. The place itself was nice. The cook came out with the same energy the girl was giving about the oxtail being sweet and little bitty oxtails which I agree with the girl because I had four super tiny ones and two decent sizes ones. Ordered food via Grubhub and my food was late. The Driver appeared to look unkept, and in a rush. I opened the bag and looked at the food and it immediately had a burning odor coming from the chicken. The Mac n Cheese was cold, hard and had burnt, crispy looking edges. The Rice n Peas smelled horrible and looked VERY DRY. The chicken was burnt, smelled burnt and was salty (after taking one bite) and was oh so OILY. With that said, this the third time I've ordered from this restaurant, the first time I was a little disappointed because the white rice was undercooked and well as the pease in the rice and peas being very hard. My kids enjoyed the stew chicken and my wife enjoyed her snapper. I ordered curry shrimp, even though it was very spicy it was still good. The second time we ordered everything was delicious, it was a big improvement from the first time. Now this third time, I got spoiled white rice with my curry shrimp meal. I tried this restaurant on GrubHub for the first time during COVID-19. I got the curry chicken dinner with cornbread, plantains, and greens, as well as the fresh beet juice with lemon ginger and honey. The takeoit was a bit messy--the curry chicken was in a styrofoam container and the sauce got all over the bag and the cornbread (probably would've been better transported in a plastic sealable container). That being said, the curry chicken was very tasty with a good level of heat, but beware of fragments of bone. The collard greens were well seasoned and flavorful, although a bit on the salty side. Normally I am a fan of fried sweet plantains, but these were a little disappointing--a little firm, and maybe not quite ripe enough. On the other hand, while the beet juice came partially frozen, it was absolutely delicious with the hint of lemon and ginger. I would definitely get this again and look forward to trying other juices. They were unfortunately out of sweet potato pudding, which I wanted to try.
