My mother spent several months in memory care cottage "Cardinal" at Quail Haven, which opened in the spring of 2015. Her condition quickly deteriorated, and we made the decision to bring her home.
First, no activities were offered other than a TV. We ourselves brought in a CD player and CDs to offer music therapy for residents. We requested activities appropriate for residents with Alzheimer's; in response, someone brought in old puzzles and games that weren't suitable for the abilities of the residents. We kept being told that activities would be offered, but they weren't.
We were also very concerned with several safety policies and procedures. For example, if a resident falls ~ which happened to my mother and two other residents I can think of ~ the resident remains on the floor until an RN from another building can be summoned. This can take 20 minutes or more. The first time my mother fell, my father happened to be there. The CNA just stood there, staring at my mother. My father had to tell her to call for help and cover my mother with a blanket.
By the time my mother left Quail Haven, she had stopped feeding herself and coherently partaking in conversation. Within two days at another facility (a hospital to care for her after *another* fall), she was feeding herself and talking quite normally. Under skilled and tender care, she blossomed.
For these and other reasons, we would not recommend Quail Haven. read more
