We arrived to Sonora by way of Ebbetts Pass, winding down through crystal alpine lakes, faerytale meadows and boulders and forests that speak in quiet and ancient tongues. The pass opened upon amber grasses contrasted against lovely sagey-colored trees and verdant yet rugged vineyards. It turns out the Victorian-inspired Barretta Gardens is overseen with a care as golden as the hue of sepia-colored days gone past and motherlodes once legendary for their bounty. Yet breakfasts are as simple, elegant and memorable as any contemporary B&B can boast. The proprietors Astrid and Daniel run an inn as refreshing as the Moroccan mint tea set out every afternoon to greet us from a hot day exploring Gold Country. We found Barretta Gardens flexible and welcoming to our two boys as well. Our only suggestion is that if they choose to turn off each room's A/C while guests are away for the day that they would turn it back on in anticipation for their return in the evening. Baretta Gardens B&B is a rare treasure I hope more visitors to the area will mine for years more to come.

Breakfast was a nice touch nothing fancy but a decent meal before leaving to start your day away from the hotel. The only thing that bothered me was that the entrances into the halls where our room was, was open access to anyone. Like if you weren't even staying at the property you could just walk right in. Hopefully this can be upgraded to the property where you need a card to access the hall areas. Other than that we would stay here again!

It's obvious to me that they take it seriously too! The room had a pod coffee maker, mini fridge, microwave, and free bottles of water. Comfortable beds and cotton (breathable) sheets. Breakfast had cheese omelettes, French toast-sticks, cereal, juice & fresh fruit. All tasty! The location is close to the freeway, but tucked away on a side street that is private. Because of that, it's much more quiet than the hotels along the Main Street in Sonora (15 minutes away). It is an hour and a half to Hetch Hetchy Dam, 15 minutes to Culver's Apple Farm in Tuolumne City, 8 minutes to Columbia and 3 miles from the BESTsourdough bread you EVER ate, from Two Acre Farms! Fantastic location. If I had 10 thumbs, I would hold them ALL up for this hotel! Truly a great stay!

Check in was a breeze as everything processed correctly through the 3rd party. We were provided 2 keys to our room. No continental breakfast provided. There is a nice cozy pool located in the rear of the upper level which was nice to use for a couple of hours, with a few tables and chairs set up. Room was accommodated with a microwave, frig and coffee maker. Our room had ALL decaf coffee . No laundry bags provided. This is more of a motel style set up with your room doors all facing outside, no indoor hallways to block some of the outside noise. Luckily though, we had a decent and quiet stay with check out being at 11.

Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We stayed in Room 14, which was advertised as having a queen bed, but it was actually a full-size bed. The room itself was very small, and while it contained beautiful antique furnishings, it felt neglected rather than charming. The window air conditioner was outdated and awkwardly installed, the shower barely drained, the toilet paper holder had been poorly glued back onto the wall, and the towel bar repeatedly fell off. The old wall heater also appeared outdated enough to raise safety concerns. Outside, the disappointment continued. The swimming pool was green, the grounds felt unkempt, and the property overall looked dirty and cluttered. Instead of feeling like a treasured historic inn, it felt like a place that has been left to slowly deteriorate. What makes this especially sad is the incredible potential this property still has. After returning to our room, I looked into the history of the Gunn House and found photos and information from the previous owners. It was evident they had intentionally preserved the hotel's historic character and created a warm, inviting atmosphere. Since the ownership changed around 2017, it appears that only the bare minimum has been done to maintain the property. Many of the photos currently used online seem to reflect the inn during its better years rather than its present condition. The Gunn House deserves better. It is a historic treasure with rich Gold Rush heritage, and it should be restored by owners who are passionate about preserving its legacy. With proper investment, thoughtful restoration, and professionals experienced in historic properties, this inn could once again become one of Sonora's crown jewels. Instead, it currently feels like a neglected landmark waiting for someone to bring it back to life. I genuinely hope that happens one day, because beneath the grime and deferred maintenance, you can still see glimpses of the beautiful hotel the Gunn House once was.

With that said the funk didn't out weigh the oldness and worn down condition of the place. Too many steep steps and uneven walking paths. I don't recommend it to anyone with mobility issues.

Bathrooms are updated and clean. Room comes with a micro fridge and microwave. Furniture is dated. We stayed for 4 days and when we asked for room service, we would told that we had to schedule ahead. No one asked us when we would like it. I don't demand daily service like in the pre-COVID days but 4 days without service! That is not reasonable! I spoke to the lady that and she was able to do it. If they need advance notice, they should ask people who have an extended stay when they would like service. Spa is heated but in the parking lot. People smoking out there. Hallway door does not lock and anyone can come in and out. Coffee is provided the lobby but not breakfast. There is a cafe next door that serves a yummy breakfast- My Garden Cafe! Breakfast special M-F 6-9am is $10 for a ham and egg breakfast with pancakes. Baby did not like their crib which was too high for a 9month old and had to get it lowered for safety. Definitely bring your own pack n' play. Bathroom came with shampoo, conditioner and Body wash in the shower but no soap at the sink.

I pride myself in leaving factual yelp reviews so here I go. -Location is PERFECTLY a short block away from the hustle bustle of the Main Street for coffee, bagels, meals, shopping, or maybe even a scoop of ice cream -Check in/out process was so warm and hospitable -We stayed in the Prospector Room because we were traveling with our dog, so took value in the private patio. Our room was cozy and spotless. Thankful for the AC unit as we visited on a hot weekend. Our dog enjoyed relaxing in the shaded patio. Our bed was comfy, more on the soft than firm, but did not hurt my back whatsoever. -OMG THE BREAKFAST. Kim is an UH-mazing cook. Perfect portion, flavor, not too heavy/complex, but certainly delicious. I am glad to have visited Sonora, but not sure if I'd make it an annual trip, to replace it with Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, or Napa. Nothing terrible happened, but I didn't have my socks knocked off either. Maybe it was the hot weather...not sure! If you plan on visiting Gold Country, do stay at the Bradford Place Inn and Gardens! We loved this old Victorian home, it's beautiful. Some rooms, like ours, have a private patio area connected to your room. Very relaxing... Although, we don't have any pets, this place is "pet friendly". Next time, we're in the area, we'll be staying here again. Kim is such a gracious hostess and good person. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND you staying here... I found this place to be very reasonable, relaxing, beautiful and includes a delicious breakfast, compared to a typical "no tell motel"!!!
