I visited Quality Art recently hoping to acquire water mixable paint in purple and pinks for a custom order of mine. They were out of both colors that I needed. I asked an employee if they had any in back stock, and was told that they would check... but then they continued to get distracted by other customers while I waited 20 minutes. They did not have any in back stock. The woman helping me pointed me towards a different brand (which I had avoided simply because the packaging looked cheap).... she assured me that she had used both brands and that it was just as good and would work perfectly for what I needed. Upon arriving home, I went to squeeze some of my new purple paint onto a plate... and it exploded out the backend of the tube. The paint was so old that it had dried completely in the opening resulting in purple paint ALL OVER my studio. It got on two of my finished pieces that were hanging on the wall. I tried cleaning it up with soap and water, but the paint just smeared and stained my walls. It is not water mixable in the slightest. I returned the paint to the store, explaining what had happened... and the gentleman I was speaking with seemed shocked that one of their employees had suggested this new type of paint. He said it wasn't even close to the quality of my normal brand. Another employee helped to return the crappy paint that I had been sold, but unfortunately they were still out of the paint I needed... with exception of the giant tubes. I have now spent about an hour total waiting during both trips, I have a studio and two paintings that are purple, and now I'm being told that to get the colors I need I owe them more money. I calmly tell them that I have an issue giving them any more of my money on principle. They call the manager, Cathy, up from the back to see what she can do. I recognize her... she is the one that assured me that the new paint was just as good as the old kind! Awesome. She tells me that the best she can do is give me the new paint at cost... so I still owe them money, and still have to likely repaint my studio (two walls and the ceiling at least) because of the terrible product she sold me. I politely decline, stating my reasons, and Cathy gives me an "I really don't care" look, turns and walks away without a word. The front end supervisor, who was very nice and apologetic the entire time, gave me some "fancy" soap for free (which sadly didn't work... my studio is still purple) and explained that the owner was at lunch and he was the only one that could do anything further to help me. No fault of hers, obviously. But to me, that's a terrible way to run a business. If management doesn't have the ability to help a customer, to make a judgment call to save a relationship when it would only cost the company a few dollars... that is ridiculous. And the fact that their manager sold me not only poor quality product, but also defective product that damaged my home and some of my art and didn't so much as offer an apology... that is beyond ridiculous. The husband/wife team that work there are amazing, and their prices are great, but I will never set foot in this store again. read more

This is a review of my experience with internet-based ordering from QUALITY ART in Garden City, Idaho. For the past 10 years, I have burned music compilations into blank compact discs, and then used enamel paint for painting pictures of recording artists, such as Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Jerry Garcia, or Franz Liszt, for painting paisley designs, and also for painting pine cones (see my attached photos of painted CD's and painted pine cones). This sort of work requires lots of correcting (using turpentine) and also cleaning my fine-tipped paint brushes and also cleaning drops of paint off my wooden dining room table. My turpentine of choice has always been WEBER pure gum turpentine, but it is not available in stores near my home (Berkeley, California). Fortunately, an internet search informed me of QUALITY ART. I ordered the WEBER brand. A day later, an employee at Quality Art called me on the phone, and told me that they were out of the WEBER turpentine, and he suggested GRUMBACHER turpentine. Immediately, I said, "YES, that will be great !" I was already familiar with Grumbacher brand, because I had used Grumbacher oil paints during my high school years for making oil paintings. During the past couple of weeks, I tried the Grumbacher turpentine and it works just as good as the WEBER brand. And so, it is a no brainer - - - I will continue to do my shopping with QUALITY ART. Plus, adventurers know that Idaho is a beautiful place for exploring and photography. Several years ago, I took my family to Glacier National Park, and our route was north to Crater Lake, then past Bend, OR, then past Vale, OR, then into Idaho and north on Route 95 to Cambridge, then along Route 12 to Missoula. On this trip, at one point we were within thirty miles of Quality Art. If you are an artist and live in Boise, you probably already know about Quality Art. They have been around for quite a few years, happily serving peoples' needs for art supplies, creative paper supplies, art books, etc. The only drawback to Quality Art is their location. It is kind of hidden behind a Maverick gas station on the West end of Chinden and unless you know where to turn, you will miss them. Once you are in their building though, you will be greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff and a broad assortment of arts and crafts supplies to choose from. I had to make a trip there recently and though I got there after they were technically closed, they still let me come in and get a couple of things that I needed for an upcoming project and were happy to help me. Another thing to note, if you are an educator and have a school ID of some sort, you get a 50% discount on your purchases. Located in an innocuous looking warehouse on 52nd street off Chinden/Hwy26, Quality Art has the most incredible selection of fine art supplies, frames, and craft materials that you have ever seen. It's like a combination of my favorite 3 art stores in NYC. They have raw canvas and stretcher bars, art papers on a roll, computer canvass, archival adhesives, and paints and paintbrushes in every price range. They even carry printmaking/watercolor paper by the sheet (found my fave Rives BFK there!) If we were not on our way to another event, I could have spent hours there. They carry those hard to find brands and items that I usually have to order online. And the selection in every category is phenomenal. We had a chance to chat with one of their employees and discovered that QA is locally-owned and started out as a grassroots, mom-and-pop store. They now have a national presence and sell online as well. Prices are good and I'm sure they would discuss bulk pricing with you. THeir shopper experience is not as luxurious as even a basic grocery store. It is truly a warehouse. BUT, the selection is enormous. They carry items for kindergarten teachers all the way to professional artist materials. In addition, their selection of premade frames is amazing. Their prices on mats for framing are exceptional. If you need anything about crafts or art, check here first. The money you will save and the selection is worth the time. Also, the employees do care about you, even though the 12 foot tall shelving and concrete floors are intimidating. I can't say enough good things about this place. I always try to go here before amazon for all my art supplies. There had only thing I couldn't find which was a good calligraphy pen but besides that any art supplies, canvas, henna supplies, it's like Christmas for an artist every time you walk in. There are few art supply stores in many large cities that can rival QA for size, selection, and price. Customer service is always top shelf. There are a few minor brands missing from the selections of some mediums, but their wholesale prices beat most online retail outlets. If you are an artist or student in the Boise area this is the place to get your supplies. If you are a teacher this is the place to shop. Plus one of these days maybe art ed will pull its head out and learn something about aesthetics before it tries to teach it. Impressive selection of art/design/painting/printmaking media that includes blank journals, ClearPrint papers, and (yes!) pica rules as well as the messier stuff like charcoal and paint. An overwhelming array of frames and framing materials, almost as if slapping the product into a box is more important than the process of making. I travel all around the country visiting art supply stores, art galleries, art museums wherever I am. When I found this one I was excited because it is huge. I like to browse, get inspiration... Then I like to pick their brains. I have learned a lot by doing that. Today, at this place, I saved a bunch of money. I have never been received so coldly. There are a lot of employees but none of them seemed too busy. Not a single hello. Or a goodbye for that matter. I have a pocket full of money and I usually spend too much. Not today. If I could not rate this at all, I would. So they are lucky enough to get even 1 star by me. I am a regular customer and come here a lot from a long drive away from Garden City. Although I wish I could never keep coming back, the prices and discounts are wonderful. As far as the staff, the management is absolutely horrible. The managers or so called owner does not come to the front of the store to help out the employees up front who are always working hard and always doing so much for me and other customers that come in. I overheard one time that a manager in the office would not come up front to help out 1 employee who had a huge line, all because they wanted to leave early and the store doesn't close to 5pm and this was before 4pm. The employees that work up front are beyond professional and wonderful beyond means. I just think management should really stop sitting in the back hiding and letting all the other employees be under paid as they are doing managements duties or jobs. We're all adults. Why don't we act like it? Not sure if there's more management screwing off not doing a lot or the owners really don't care for our business as customers. It's a family owned company, treat your employees like family and you won't get this type of review. read more

I'm an art student, so if i have last minute needs i'm forced to shop here because its essentially the only game in town. However the customer service i experienced last time is driving me to the internet even for last minute things. The girls were rude, and gossiping about other employees and told me my ring up would a chore and then debated about which one would have to do it because "well i did the hard one last time" (i spent well over 275 dollars ). Its not the owners fault they are nice and try to get you what you need. They need better trained employees who know where things are and the what they can be used for, and who are willing to help and not act like the three people in line are ruining their day. read more

I told her what my paintings were and why I had chosen the frames I did. She took a few minutes and picked out two new frames that I agreed to, but really had not looked on line with her. I just felt that she was really listening and trying to help me. My frames arrived, and packaged so well, and were absolutely perfect!!!
