    Lots of apples.
    Inverleith F.

So I had to take a detour due to some traffic stoppage on 880 and lucky me, Quality was open! I went in looking for the apple fritter and instead got an apple filled bear claw. They were out of fritters but is even better! The dough is very light and their apple filling must be homemade or of a very high quality because of the flavor of the apples. They are just tart enough and have some al denteness to them. I'm trying to watch my weight so I ate about half but oh man did I want to devour the whole thing. Please stop and support this hole in the wall business. Easy to park right in front and I would say the price is reasonable. $3 for this huge bear claw.

Fresh traditional donut shop along a busy section of Edwards. Kind of a hole in wall look from the outside...inside is really clean. Ordered donut holes that did not disappoint. Very reasonably priced and everything looked good.

I've driven past this place for the last 3 months on my way to work. I haven't stopped in because I'm usually just about on-time to work. However I was craving donuts as made a conscious effort to leave a little early to try this place out, also I had heard that this place had gotten broken into and robbed. Not cool for mom and pop places. I got there and my go to in the donut arena is usually jelly filled donuts and french crullers though a lot of places don't make/have them. The staff are sweet and nice. You can tell the early risers had already been in and they are were restocking the donut window. It's not a fancy place, but like they say, location is everything. The jelly donuts were huge, so I opted for two raspberry filled, a regular twist and sugar donute. Last minute decided on 1/2 donut holes cuz they were enormous. Since it was my first time there and a lot of the co-workers go there, she apparently gave me some extra donut holes. The donuts were fresh and the jelly was a good amount. Will be back.

I recently developed an allergy to onion and, unfortunately, onion is the only ingredient not listed to remove on the Saint Francis sandwich (on their website). I decided to call to place a pickup order so I could mention the allergy. The man who picked up the phone refused to take an order insisting that I must place my order online. I explained there wasn't the option to remove the ingredient and was worried since I had an allergy. He argued that I was mistaken, and I could edit the order online or order a "build your own sandwich" (without acknowledging the additional cost for such a thing). I mentioned the inaccessibility of such a system and that I truly wasn't seeing the option to remove ingredients. He spent longer arguing with me over the phone than it would have been to take my order over the phone. Eventually, I relented, and placed an online order stating in the "notes to seller" (the only way to edit an order in this case) no onion on the Saint Francis sandwich. There was onion on my sandwich. Maybe instead of believing they need to be right, they should just listen to the customer and try to accommodate.

I really shouldn't single them out because I've noticed that a lot of the east bay delis have the same type of bread, but I will say that it just wasn't my taste. The rolls (I got the Dutch Crunch, sourdough roll, and the soft roll) were not that great and --like I said-- maybe it's the same vendors everyone uses in the east bay. I can say…read morethat it is the best authentic vietnamese banh mi in the east bay as I've tried many other spots that haven't particularly matched or exceeded their level of quality. I usually order a #2, #7, and #13. It's very affordable, especially if you're on a strict budget for lunch. $7 sandwiches? I mean it's a pretty good deal. #2 Banh Mi Dac Biet/Special Combo Ham Sandwich - If you're looking for a cold italian sandwich but want to explore new options this is a vietnamese version that also has pate butter taking it to the next level. #7 Banh Mi Xiu Mai/Meat Ball & Egg Sandwich - An elevated version of the #3 with an added egg. This was my absolute favorite as a child and still is now. Nice balance of sweet and salty. The meat is tender and with the added egg yolk that pops when you take a bite takes it the next level. I think this is also slept on since I don't see many people ordering it. #13 Banh Mi Xa Xiu/BBQ Pork Sandwich - This is their secret weapon. My god the sweetness from the bbq pork with the pate butter is incredible. I always look forward to eating the bottom end of the sandwich because that's where most of the flavor and butter are hiding. The pickled veggies help give it the acidity it needs for a well balanced bite. By far my favorite. They also have many other options besides banh mi that make and sell on the day of like Banh Cuon, Che, Egg rolls, etc. Definitely give those a try especially the Mochi Ham sandwich aka Banh Day they got there too. I always have a hard time choosing between the #7 & # 13 so I always end up getting both. Service is straight forward, you line up, order, and wait for them to call you up for your order. Simple. You don't have to ask me twice if I want to grab some banh mi here. But do be aware that at certain hours of the day it can get very busy and crowded. Either to super early when opening or closer to closing about an hour before. For new comers, I highly recommend starting off with #7 or #13 for your introduction to their banh mi for a better first time experience.

But I have to wax poetic for a minute: today I ate the very best pastrami I have ever had. I grew up on the East Coast (as did the proprietor) and I have easily eaten 500 reuben sandwiches in my life (because they are pretty much the very best). This pastrami is absurd. It is thin. It is tender. It is flavorful. It is meaty but not stringy or fatty. It is moist. It is a love letter. It is a sweet whisper. It is goodness through and through. Made into a reuben, this pastrami is divine. I believe the proprietor makes his own thousand island dressing and it is just right. The bread has been pressed and grilled, and is neither tough nor soggy. You taste and feel the cheese, but it does not overwhelm. In short, I am in heaven. The proprietor of Modigliani Café grew up in a family that worked with meat, and he won an award when he was quite young for curing bacon (you can see the certificate on the wall in the shop). So my suspicion is that this pastrami is his creation. And I bet that bacon was the best ever. Pay Modigliani Café a visit. Everything I've ever ordered was delicious.
