The woman who helped me was very kind and patient as I made my donut selections. I got 4 donuts for $7. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. I do wish they had blueberry cake donuts; they didn't have any while I was there. I hope they serve those soon. I was otherwise happy to see plenty of the typical/normal donuts available. Inside was clean and there was plenty of seating if you wanted to enjoy your donuts and coffee indoors. Lots of parking too. I think this will become my go-to donut place going forward. read more

I placed an order for pickup through too good to go. I arrived at 7:20pm on the dot which was the final pickup time. Upon arriving the doors were LOCKED with staff inside. I've been here several times, since it's really close to where I work and next to the starbs. The donuts are fine. I usually get a chocolate donate or the crumble cake. I had the maple before. Not a fan. But I am overly picky about maple now because a place back home. The attendants are never really "nice" per se. But it's usually busy and they're just trying to move people along. Which is fine. I'm not a morning person anyway. Sometimes it's really packed in there, and it makes it a little hard to move around, but it's fairly clean at all times. And never very loud. I will say I've gone for lunch one time. And that was enough to never have lunch again. The Chinese food was pretty bland, and fairly greasy. I'm thinking I would be getting a good amount of Chinese food and donuts that are left for the end of the day. I also noticed when I talked to the business owner, he specifically told me he has his own food supplier. Donut Star is very popular in the Fruitvale area because people told me they sell the best coffee drinks. Doughnuts are so/so. Stick to others for this. I tried their "Chinese Food" because the establishment was conveniently located near my doctor's office. Let me just tell you that even Panda Express does Chinese Food better. Their Chow-Mein had a taste between overly seasoned or gon to waste. Sweet & Sour Chicken was big chuncks of fatty, unflavored meat in a overly sweetened sauce. Sorry to mention it, but they made me hate Chinese Food for a while. I would normally say I am a fan and give 5 stars. I come here quite regularly several times a month. It's pretty inexpensive and you get a lot of food. I'm a little dissatisfied that they switched to paper-cardboard like cartons. They don't hold up for long from the steam heat/moisture/liquids from the hot food. I always order my food to go and have never had a problem except sometimes with the teriyaki sauce leaking out and into the carry out bag, at least the napkins soak up most of it. I live in Alameda and by the time I got home, the carton had lost its "sturdiness" and I had to put it on a plate. You couldn't hold the container in your hand anymore because it was collapsing where it wasn't being held up. The food was great as always. I was pleasantly surprised by Starwok Express. I needed a quick meal when I was in the neighborhood and saw this place at the strip mall that i was at. I had low expectations and it went lower when I saw that this place was a Chinese fast food restaurant and a Donut shop which is a strange combo. I got the orange chicken, veggies and chow mein. There was only 1 employee and she seemed a little bored but nice. The surprise was that the food was pretty good. The orange chicken was good, the chow mein was oily but very flavorful. For what this place is, it's actually rather amazing! I've been going to different Chinese places in Oakland and Alameda looking for a few basic things- delicious egg rolls, noodly chow mien and veggie fried rice. The quality is not high end, but boy can the value/deliciousness not be beat! For about $6 you can get a 'Combo B' and get 'half and half' fried rice and chow mien (no meat in either) and two other items. I was soo happy when I realized that two egg rolls was one item. So basically, you can get enough food for two meals- chow mein, fried rice, egg rolls and veggie chop suey, add on a drink and a brownie or something for under $10! Love it. read more

Well overdue for a review of Donut Star after 10+ visits. Let me tell you about the Chinese food first...yes it is super greasy but what else do ya expect for a "express" Chinese food joint? The key here is to get the Chinese food when its fresh. That being said, ideal times for Chinese are 10:30-11am and 3-4pm for me. Most memorable items I get are: dry fried pork ribs, salt & pepper wings, orange chicken (it is thickly battered FYI), spicy chicken and teriyaki chicken (taste very "shredded" if that means anything to you). The chow mein is great but the fried rice is bland (MUST be eaten with side items to enjoy it). NOW for the best part...the donuts. Walking into this place is a mini candy land for me. Favorable donuts are: original glaze (classic), sugar, chocolate, frost vanilla, frost vanilla cake, some with coconut sprinkle and maple bars. The freshness seems to be consistent throughout the morning and early afternoon from my experience. Believe me, when I first thought Chinese food AND donut shop in one I was skeptical. After trying it once, I told myself why didn't I come here early on my life!? 4/5 for decent Chinese food & selection, 5 for donuts and 5 for price. This place gets 4.5/5 from me overall. read more

This has to be one of the last remaining donut shops around that still sells a dozen donuts for $10 or less. The quality is excellent here, the dough that they use is very tasty and has the texture of a traditional soft donut crossed with a croissant or similar pastry. I personally like the jelly filled round donuts, they are large in size and are always filled all the way through for $1.25 each. All their sweets are delicious here, so no matter what you choose; it will surely be a delight :) read more

I LOVE the doughnut holes here! I stop here almost every morning around 7 am for my soft, yummy and warm doughnut holes and a small coffee. I'm in good company with many other gardeners, of the Latino persuasion. . The ladies who work there are always the same and the more you go, the friendlier they get. Now they know exactly what I want and I'm in and out in a flash. They're time efficient and inexpensive. At 10am, they also start to serve a buffet style Chinese food. Its fresh and delicious too! My kids really love to pick 3 different entrées with either rice or noodles. There's enough food to last them all day!
