4950 w 14th- Tue room smelled like mold and mildew as soon as we opened the door. I immediately went to the front desk to complain. There was a little girl who gave me a can of air freshener and said if I sprayed this into the A/C it would make the room smell better. WTF it did help a little but WTF. They did give us a can of air freshener, but asked for it back like twice giving me the impression that was the only can they had. The tub was stained, and looked disgusting least to say we didn't shower there. The comfortor was hard and scratchy. I never got under the covers I will NEVER stay there again. If I owned this brand, I would NOT want the name associated with the room we experienced. The room (#164) smelled like cigarettes. One of the stairwells smelled of pot. There was police activity in the parking lot with an obviously abandoned vehicle outside our window. I'll attach photos to show you the poor condition of the room. Additionally, if you do choose to stay here, request an upstairs room or one with no one above you. I got poor sleep with all of the walking around above us, even at 2:00 a.m. Proprietors were friendly. Breakfast was adequate. Location was convenient. read more

Where do I begin? The place was a DUMP! My daughter found a crack pipe on the floor next to the bed. The room was filthy! Stains on the walls and furniture. The smoke alarm had a plastic bag over it. Isn't that illegal? There were no bags in the trash cans. Our tv didn't work. (No power cord) Sometime during our stay the door to the parking lot was removed allowing anyone access to the inside. The fitted sheet came off during the night revealing a urine stained mattress cover. We were there for two nights. Very sketchy out and around the outside. People lingering in the parking lot. It was definitely not worth what we paid. We assumed the price was so high due to it being State Fair time. We could've stayed in a fancy hotel for amount we paid. We usually aren't real picky since we only use hotels for a place to sleep at night and we've stayed in some old, outdated places but this place was disgusting. It doesn't deserve even 1 star. Stopped on our way through. Not being from the area, we had to choose a hotel blindly. Well, this one was a mistake. - The A/C unit hardly works - There is not ventilation in the bathroom - The shower curtain rod was literally hanging on by a thread. - Several outlets did not have face plates on them - making traveling with a 2 year old interesting. - Woke up in the morning to ants crawling on our cell phones. When trying to find the exit closest to our vehicle, we entered a hallway that was separated by a door. As soon as we opened the door, it smelled like burnt cigarettes, despite being advertised as a smoke free hotel. Honestly, it appeared that this wing of the hotel was reserved for clientele participating in the criminal Justice system that cannot access other housing. Steer clear. read more

After 8 years as a Choice preferred member, we ended up with the worst experience at the Quality Inn on Merle Hay in Des Moines Iowa. I reserved a suite for 6 days for my niece and reserved via Choice hotels. Michael at the hotel would not honor the reservation despite assurances from the reservation agent that the traveler did not need to have the credit card. Spent 2 hours on the phone battling to not get charged for $900 in hotel room fees. I have used Choice hotels almost exclusively for the past 8 years of monthly work travel for the State of California. My crew and friends stay there because of my recommendation. I will never stay at Choice Hotels again and will urge others to friends and employees to avoidl this chain. They were never great but we never got stuck with a reservation fiasco like this. I made a reservation late at night, I needed a place that night to stay, but apparently the reservation I made online was for the following afternoon and night. I immediately called the hotel, and the front desk guy was rude and did not care that I needed to stay that night, and didn't want to lift a finger to help me. He told me I had to have a new booking for that night, which is impossible because it was after midnight. So instead of simply switching the night to the night of, he refused to do so. So I contacted Priceline customer service. They spoke with the hotel, and never received any authorization to refund me! When I received that email from priceline, I called the front desk during the day and spoke with a woman that did not care at all that the front desk man didn't help me that evening, and would not refund my money! I hope they have fun with that 90 measly dollars or whatever it was, they've lost a whole lot because I frequently stay in this city, and you better believe that I'll never go there ever again. read more

We stayed at the Comfort Inn Merle Hay Road in August 2022 for the Iowa state fair after a 2 year COVID break. We had stayed at this hotel at least 3 times before with no issues and were expecting a similar experience this time. Unfortunately the hotel seemed run down and the breakfast options were definitely lacking. Here are our observations: - The ventilation system was not working in the bathrooms of multiple guestrooms, so the steam would collect in the rooms This has obviously been a problem for some time because paint in multiple bathrooms was badly peeling. - Phones didn't work consistently. When there was a dial tone, it went to a busy signal. - Chair was broken in one room, it would tip over if leaned back. - The fire doors were not working and would not remain open. - The pool looked scummy, so the filters were obviously not running. - There were personal items left over from other guests that were not removed from prior stays (frozen water in the fridge and balled-up socks). - The TV did not work in one room after a power failure. - The access doors for Entrance 3 and the swimming pool were non-functional and locked in the open position, permitting non-guests to access the hotel and pool at any time without oversight. Coupled with the poor lighting in the hallway was poor and with the fire doors closed, sight lines were very poor and an overall sense of unsafety was present. - The toilet in one room was having flushing issues. Related to the breakfast room: - No fruit for breakfast. - The hot water did not work at the water machine. - The "pancake machine" was not working properly and would only make tiny splats of pancakes. - No eggs (or sausage the 2nd day) so a gluten-free family member could only eat yogurt. - Orange juice not working the entire stay. - Hand sanitizer was empty. - Tables were not clean. - The toilet in the breakfast bathroom was not fastened to the floor properly. We will unfortunately never stay in this hotel again. The multiple issues were not just annoying, they paint the picture of poor management and serious safety hazards. We filed a report with the Iowa state hotel regulator and will definitely be looking for another hotel next year. read more

Hallways were filthy, had to change rooms 3 times in order to find one with a bathroom door and electrical cord to air conditioning that was not burned on one end. This was the worst hotel I have ever experienced and would advise travelers to avoid this hotel. We booked a room directly through Quality Inn reservations and they charged us $266.90. It was late in the day and we were exhausted from a day of traveling so we booked it because it was right off I-80 on Merle Hay Rd in Des Moines, Iowa. Upon checking in, the desk clerk asked me to initial a paper that I would pay a rate of $153. When I told him that we had booked directly and been charged $266.90, he said I couldn't cancel without penalty and was stuck with the higher rate. The hallway carpets were filthy. A saloon/bar attached to the hotel had been destroyed by fire. The parking lot and exterior were unkempt. The back entry doors were not locked so there was no security. The first room we were given seemed ok, but the wall air conditioner was unplugged and there were burn marks on the plug. We asked for another room. The second room had no bathroom door, and the lights didn't work. We finally got a third room with a dirty bathroom, though the bedding seemed ok. We will never stay at Quality Inn again. read more

I stay in upscale hotels 3 nights a week, and I had a great stay here (despite the negative reviews on yelp). It was my first time at a quality inn. The hotel is VERY simple (don't expect a fancy place) and also very clean. The beds and pillows were comfortable, there was free breakfast, and both of us (cautious females) felt safe there. It's nothing fancy, but for a long road trip it exceeded our expectations. The price was pretty good and we are soooo glad that we stayed here and not a crappy $50/night hotel with negative reviews. Totally worth extra money. The only things that weren't ideal was there wasn't an elevator and the bathroom counter in our room had started to separate at one corner (no big deal). In conclusion, this place is perfect for a long road trip. I totally recommend it, just don't expect a fancy place. read more

We got in at 2am and they had a few rooms available. The econolodge hell down the street drive us over here. There's a loud bar attached to this Quality Inn, and when we got to our room there were sheets all over the floor & bed with a dehumidifier drying up a giant mystery wet spot. We told the front desk, who indifferently offered us a room down the ridiculously long hallway. We were so tired we just passed out in the original room. Woke up with no shower curtain, and my friend had a giant welt on his arm from some kind of bug. Whatever. Cheap room. Such a bizarre night in Des Moines. Rooms are clean, but are a little dark and dated. They do have flat screens now so bring your HDMI cable so you can YELP on a bigger screen! Free wifi is always a plus and a requirement for my work travels (or personal too I guess). The halls do have a weird smell to them would be a drawback to me and the breakfast was not as good as some others that are serving more of a selection. It wouldn't bother me to stay here again if it was for work since its cheap and we have to stay in a very tight budget 50/night in most cities but if it was my money I would not suggest it. read more

This hotel is hard to access. The hotel is noisy if you stay on the highway side. The amenities. The freeway noise will not allow you to sleep late. The Business Center was not useful while there. We stay in a lot of Quality Inns and Comfort Inns and this one was the worst....and no one seemed to care. We didn't even get an apology. Checked in and soon found toilet wouldn't flush. So we had to pack up and move to another room. No maintenance on duty. This room had shredded quilt/duvey on bed, towels very thin. About an hour after getting new room a lady came walking into our room! Well, you know we weren't happy with this incident. When we talked to Susan at front desk she said it was ok now! No apology. When we tried to deadbolt the room when we came in for the evening it wouldn't work. Susan's reply"oh". Now I feel real safe especially after FD gave a key to our room to someone else. When we left our room for dinner we got locked out. Susan erased all keys to our room but didn't bother to call snd tell us. Wanted to talk to Mgr. this morning but he isn't in until Tue. And no one else in charge with any authority. Mgr. doesn't even have a business card. I am a solo traveller via motorcycle and I stayed at this hotel because it is close to the freeway. Imagine my horror when I woke up and had BEDBUG BITES on my hands, leg, arms and back!! Needless to say, I had a VERY uncomfortable ride home. I had a severe reaction to the bites and had to go to urgent care and the doctor prescribed 3 different medications. It took about 4 weeks for the bites to finally clear up. I wrote to the manager and asked to have my night's stay reimbursed along with the urgent care and medications bill. He refused. Then a customer service agent from Choice Hotels talked to the manager, and he said he would reimburse my night's stay, but nothing else. I am still waiting for this to happen. This manager obviously doesn't care one bit about his customers. Do not stay at this hotel!!! Booked 4 rooms and checked in very late. Saw stairs were dirty going to room and did not think much about that. Climbed into bed and was out. In the morning when I went to pick up my phone bugs were crawling on it. Went into the bathroom and mold was in the shower. Called front desk, talked to Mary she said she would have it looked into it. Look into bugs are crawling all over the night stand? (We had no food in room) We left to have breakfest at Perkins. Get to the truck and someone had broke the window into the truck and stole a tool box. Called front desk and was told the security cameras are "dummy" cameras. Really? How much more could happen... Well when I walked back into the room they cleaned the shower with bleach and left the moldy towels on the floor that they used to clean with. Called front desk checked all 4 rooms out and the rest of our party coming left also. Total 9 rooms. Of the first 4 rooms, 3 had a lot of mold in the shower. We did not have to pay for our room.
