Not my favorite Marriott, but a nice and clean place to stay if you are downtown. AMBIENCE: Cool and trendy. Nice modern look in lobby and rooms. SERVICE: Here is where the Marriott experience dropped. The front desk had no one there, after some time went by someone finally arrived. Not the friendliest person, kinda felt like we were a bother.....Also in the bar, the bartender could have been more happy to be there...was not very friendly. ROOM: I was up on 27th floor. The room was kinda small, but it was neat and clean and everything worked! Bed was comfortable and the room was very quiet! Zzzzzzzz CLEANLINESS: Overall, very clean throughout. Overall I felt like this was a pretty standard hotel Marriott experience. I was a little frustrated with my room as it was hard to get the temperature down and it ran hot. The pillows on the bed were crap. It was confusing as the website said on site parking for $24 or $36 for valet. I was told there is only valet. Its very confusing to find a spot to park and check in. The hotel overall is clean and the staff was fairly helpful and very polite. The mobile key on the app is frustrating as the check in staff didn't know how to get it up and going. Nice location at least. read more

What a solid spot to stay in the heart of downtown DSM! I was in town for the Ludacris concert (Iowa State Fair, by proxy) and needed a spot to stay. I actually booked this last minute on Priceline for a very reasonable rate ($140). Check-in was easy. Staff was pleasant and helpful. There was valet available ($35/night) but also a ramp two blocks away ($10/night). There's a Starbucks on site with Mash + MARROW offering up solid options. The room was light and bright. It was clean and updated-- I loved the chaise, vinyl floor with rugs, safe and that it had a fridge (no microwave though). The shower ACTUALLY got insanely hot water which I'm here for! And the shower head/water pressure was delightful. What really did it for me besides the locale (super easy walk to Fresko, Tupelo Honey, Centro, 801 Chophouse, Hello Marjorie, Smokey Ds BBQ-- and a Kum & Go) was the concierge, Mike. We were in town for work and pleasure; with plans to attend the Iowa State Fair. We inquired about DART-- as we had no intention to drive-- and Mike insisted he shuttle us! For $20 a trip (split amongst all folks being shuttled) we got dropped off right at the entrance-- after the concert we called his cell and got picked up in minutes. Totally worth it and he was a great conversation, too. We didn't check out the pool this time but we have every intention on staying at Des Moines Marriot Downtown again! read more

The cleanliness and ambiance of this Marriott are great. The staff is friendly and helpful. I'm leaving two stars because I have stayed here twice, and both times there have been large groups of unsupervised children in the fitness center running around like crazy, climbing on equipment, picking up weights, etc, and this time these boys were throwing balls at me and making inappropriate noises. I travel for work and the last thing I want to deal with after a long day is other people's children harassing me in the gym. The gym and pool are connected and are on the same floor as all the conference rooms, I'm sure this has something to do with this type of incident happening multiple times during different stays months apart from one another, but the hotel has got to do more to enforce no unsupervised children under 18 in the fitness center. Not only does it ruin other guests workouts, but it is dangerous for the children and could pose a liability on the hotel. read more

Location is very good, nice hotel for a conference because there are plenty of meeting rooms and the equipment is excellent. It's a nice hotel with good lobby areas, the rooms are very comfortable and the front end staff is competent and helpful. We were here for a sociology conference and the front desk clerks default for women was "Miss Firstname." The first time I corrected to "I think that's Dr. Lastname" I got a round of applause from the others standing in line. But it kept on happening. Such a shame that civility and manners have declined and in such a sexist manner. There is affordable parking very close, don't take the valet parking as it takes longer. The hotel is short-staffed as the whole industry is. The main problem for me is that there weren't a lot of coffee options. The in room coffee was poor in quality and ran out with out replenishing on my first day. The coffee shop downstairs was mainly staffed by the front desk staff, meaning it wasn't really staffed. It's downtown so weekends lots of places around the hotel are closed. Two things are important for enjoying an academic conference, adequate sleep (check) and good coffee (not so much). I thought the room prices were good, but we had a group discount rate. read more

The bar is directly to your left when you first walk in and they have a ton of options. They also have food. There's a late night menu that can be delivered to your room. Had the chance to hang here, swim, shower, have lunch and more! Yes my parents were staying here last weekend and I kinda also took the room over.. My son and I got to use the rad swimming pool, twice and we even got to play a little ping pong after we swam. The pool area is great and if there is lots of kids there or you have the place to yourself, it's a rad spot to hang out for a bit! The rooms and bathroom was super comfortable and had a fab view of downtown Des Moines.. Took advantage of the hotel being hooked to the SKYWALK and walked across the street for lunch! The next day we had lunch in the lobby and that was dandy too! All in all this is worth the price for location, skywalk access on a blustery winter day, great amenities and more! Room was nice. Service was great. No available free parking. Nice and big flat screen tv in the room. You can watch Netflix on your in-room tv (subscription required), but not any other streaming platform (Hulu, Paramount, AppleTV, etc...) Does have an in-room safe, which was nice since we were in Des Moines for Pride weekend and I had a lot of cash on me. With that said, when spending nearly $250/night for a hotel, I shouldn't have to pay extra to have WiFi in my room. Our in-room hairdryer was melted and didn't work. The pool area was okay, but definitely needed maintenance (chlorine). The fitness area was pretty good. I rather enjoyed my stroll on the treadmill while my child went swimming. No hot tub, which was sad. Overall, one of the priciest hotels I've ever stayed in. I just don't think it was worth the $300/night for the stay. After all the extra expenses (basics like parking, sodas, tipping and WiFi) my one night stay for a Standard King Room, cost me over $300. Maybe I'm just a tightwad but had I not been charged $20.00 for WiFi, $30.00 for Parking (for ONE night, and without in/out service), $20.00 for concierge service and $10.00 for two sodas, I would have given 5 stars. Service, check-in, and check-out were all great, and as an added bonus, while a colleague and I were trying to get some water from the store at one point, the front desk person just let us have it on the house because he was busy with some other guests. From that perspective, it was a good stay. That, and the mobile check-in seemed to work. However, later that evening in the room, I noticed that the room was not very clean at all. Some parts of the floor in the bedroom were sticky, and there were clumps of hair on the floor in the bathroom. At this point, though, it was pretty late at night, and I would be checking out in the morning so I wasn't trying to get anyone to clean it up, figuring I would just avoid the nasty stuff. I did reach out through the Marriott app, though, and while they did respond, they didn't really offer anything to make it a better experience. read more

This is an updated review from ours in 2011. We had intended to stay at another downtown property, but accidentally made reservations here. I will have to say we were very happy. This hotel is in the middle of whatever is happening in Des Moines, and you can walk to most of it from here. The skywalk gives you access to the Civic Center, 801 Chophouse, and a variety of daytime restaurants. You can use a downtown parking garage, or have the valet park your car for an additional charge. The restaurant is pretty good, and the bar downstairs is simply a great place to watch people. read more

Valet was easy, $25/ night, at least I know my vehicle is inside and on the premises rather than in a ramp or collecting ice and snow on the windows over night. Seriously, the ONLY issue I have is the mobile key not working correctly. We exclusively stay at Marriott and their sister hotels all over the country. Since the roll out of the app with key and mobile check out, we've never had an issue anywhere. Room beds, cozy, hardwood type flooring, smart TV so we could watch Hulu or Netflix. Beautiful view of the city. They no longer have a jacuzzi/hot tub at this location. The pool was warm though. Vending machines accept apple pay. Room service was quick and accurate. I am not even kidding, best room service food ever. I had the bacon cheeseburger (you know by now I love my burgers!) with crinkle cut fries. Perfect. My MIL had the turkey blt with handmade chips. Her chips were so crispy and had the perfect amount of salt. I've been coming here since I was a kid....probably 30 years. They have huge banquet rooms, ball room, business rooms. I've attended several wedding receptions here. Probably my favorite local hotel. It's gorgeous and the staff is extraordinary. read more

I am a 30 year old disabled female that does business at this hotel regularly and was asked by cleaning staff if I had a room because the restroom in the public lobby was not for non-guests. I explained that I intended to conduct business here today and was still scolded. I will be buying my 7 dollar water elsewhere but will at least stay and charge my phone while I am here. I called from my room to inquire about placing a food order and I began by saying I have a question about one of food items on the menu..and before I could finish my sentence the person interrupted and said No actually that item it's not good don't order it . And starts laughing uncontrollably. I was very confused and thinking to myself if I called the wrong number. I said excuse me ? She said I don't know about the food I just take the orders for the kitchen. I said can u transfer me to the kitchen please. Still laughing she said to hold on. I waited for 5 min then hung up . I called back and got CHRISTINE at the front desk. I tried to explained what just happened and how I was taken a back by it. She in a very careless tone said "sorry about that experience. " I asked her the question I was trying to ask the first time . Which was if the salami on the flat bread was cooked or not. She responded with an attitude "we don't serve any raw items on our menu everything is cooked. I tried to explain that I was pregnant and needed to know if the salami was heated or not . Her tone was rude, condescending and completely unprofessional over the phone. To me the bathroom was a bit odd: a frosted-glass sliding "barn door-esque" door separated it from the bedroom. So if you really want privacy, you will be uncomfortable (eg sharing a room with someone you don't know real well). It also seems odd to me that there's no fan in the bathroom, so it gets steamy. Hallway noise is fairly easily heard in the bedroom - seems like it'd be abt as easy to put in a white-noise machine as a Keurig. But it was clean and easy to stay there. When staying in Des Moines, IA, I usually stay on the westside of the city limits. This time, I decided I would stay downtown. This Marriott does not offer on-site parking unless you make the decision to valet park your car. There are 2 convenient public parking structures a block away. One can take the Skywalk to the Marriott, if the weather is challenging. Restaurants are not open at this hotel but you can order room service from a limited menu. There are great restaurants within walking distance if you perform your homework and peruse Yelp. The front desk staff are very friendly, helpful, and efficient. The lounge is open but only for snacks and cold beverages with limited hours. The fitness center is well maintained and has plenty of cardio and selectorized machines to get your workout. The room was very clean, the hotel floor was very quiet, and furniture is modern and comfortable. Plenty of electrical plugs for my needs and the internet is fast and reliable. Overall, a good place to get work done, get a good workout, and a quiet night of rest. read more

I was here for a conference over a few days. If organizing something myself, I would definitely consider them! Didn't stay in a room, but dined in a banquet hall over several working meals and had all day classes/seminars. It was a rather good setting. Great amount of space with good table setups and chairs. Staff were all very friendly and had quick answers to any needs. Their A/V staff was helpful and very polite dealing with a bunch of old engineer types. I was impressed with their patience and attitudes. Parking Tip: A lot of people suggest using the valet, but the Skywalk makes it pretty painless to park anywhere and get to the hotel without being in the elements, if it's rainy or whatnot. I found the parking at 9th and Locust (8th and Grand) to a great spot. read more

This facility is not up to par with other RI Marriott properties we have visited!! Stayed in 50+ hotels around the country and internationally. This stay was a Friday-Saturday last weekend, 1 Bedroom suite with sofa bed. 1. Room was overall dirty and run down...grime, carpet stains, MOLD growing on ceiling vent!! I doubt it has ever been wiped down. 2. Sofa had HUGE rips in the cushions with foam CLEARLY coming out of one 10 inch gash. Dirty and unappealing to make sofa into a bed. 3. Shower....chipped and cracked, and NO HOT WATER!!!! None. 11:00am and your facility cant supply even luke warm water!!! This I did bring to the desk persons attention when checking out...."Oh, ya sorry"....so it is a KNOWN problem. This is the midwest....winter....0 degrees...come on at least you can provide hot water. 4. 4th floor smell....OMG it is literally a gagging experience coming off the elevator. The cleaning ladies seemed to be working hard and were very pleasant.....whoever oversees them and does quality control is NOT..obviously as the smell was there the entire stay...and room condition....mold is huge issue. 5. Paying to park??? This isnt a Las vegas or Palm springs resort!! Marriot you can do MUCH better than this nickel and dime gouging. The good....yes, there is good, but not nearly enough to overcome the above bad. 1. Location..excellent right downtown, by the river. 2. Assistant Manager checked me in and was Top Notch. Very friendly, helpful, explained property details, directions given.....One of the most knowledgable and professional checkins in years. HE was excellent. 3. Bed..was clean and comfortable. 4. Kitchen was tidy and above knee level clean. Dishes were acceptable. Pots/pans...didnt use, but looked old and questionable. With no hot water, falling apart furniture, grubby floors, gag inducing stench, and mold visablly growing from the vents, I will not advise anyone to stay at this property. An outsider would not expect a lot of happening things going on in this Midwestern town, but thats just not true. (Des Moines was recently voted one of the new hippest towns, seems the high-tech industry is relocating many from So-Cal) In the center of it all in downtown is the Marriott. You wouldn't expect a chain to be hip, but the set up is nice and designed to let people intermingle in the lobby. Nice bar, nice seating and no $20.00 martinis! Rooms here are nice and pretty standard for a Marriott. There is also a nice little market in the lobby with pastries, beverages, sandwiches and such. While I have a feeling this hotel has been remodeled it is spotless. Staff are super friendly and accommodating. If you're looking for a great central location... this is it. read more

For frequent business travelers, this is the best hotel in Des Moines. Consultants and convention goers often fight over availability in this hotel, resulting in exorbitant rates during busy weeks. However if you manage the snag this hotel at a reasonable price, the battle is well worth it. Marriott loyalists will notice that this hotel features the "redesigned" guest room look that Marriott has been pushing to its mainline Marriott hotels across the country (wooden floors, smart TVs, walk-in showers, etc.). The contemporary look of the guest rooms and the views I feel pushes this hotel from the upper-midscale range into the range of affordable luxury. The public areas are very nice. The concierge lounge is especially excellent - the staff (usually Mary) is very friendly and the evening hors d'oeuvres are actually filling enough to serve as actual dinner. The gym contains a good mix of strength and cardio equipment, as well as a pool. The hotel is also directly connected to the sky walk, meaning you can traverse downtown without ever going outside. Despite the hotel's shiny exterior (or interior, I should say), there are still some notable flaws that detract from the experience. The bar/restaurant is pretty exorbitantly expensive for Des Moines, but more egregiously the service is the slowest I've seen out of any hotel restaurant. The graveyard shift at Waffle House would be faster. I've sometimes placed orders I've completely forgotten about just because they take so long. Luckily, the hotel is walking distance from several restaurants in Downtown Des Moines. Just don't plan to eat here and it'll be worth the stay! read more

The bar in the lobby is small, but gets the job done. You can eat at the bar and the bartender was friendly in letting me sample a couple of the beers. They have s few local beers on tap, which is great for the traveler like myself. I always like to try to local flavors. The room was a typical marriott room. Clean but not overly huge. The bathrooms in particular are small and cramped. Fine for me by myself, but it would be a pain for 2 people staying together. read more

My room was a pretty standard Marriott room (which is why I am a Marriott loyalist - consistency and service). Breakfast at the restaurant was also good, but the concierge lounge lacked a bit of what I would like to see (hence why I had to do breakfast in the restaurant). Late night in the lobby bar was also pretty good with reasonably priced drinks and a decent vibe. All around, a good experience as I've come to expect from Marriott flagged properties. read more

A lovely Marriott in the heart of the Capitol of Iowa. This is an updated Marriott property and the staff has been great, as you would expect from this family of hotels. We had a company meeting for two days and they really took care of us. We went to their "River Rock" tavern for lunch, and everybody who had it really liked the Pasta Buffet. I had a pulled pork sandwich that was delicious. Of course, the Marriott beds are heavenly to sleep on, but if you are allergic to down, make sure to request a "feather-free" room (and accept my condolences because you're missing out on something special!) If you are at least "gold" elite with Marriott, the lounge on the mezzanine level is quite nice and the ladies who staff it were both friendly and attentive. If you're NOT an elite member, know this: the Marriott program is worth belonging to, if you travel a lot. There are other programs who cater to occasional travelers, but for those of us who spend a lot of time on the road (we're talking 50+ nights a year) the Elite program is pretty sweet. Regardless, the staff at all levels of the Marriott family are exceptional. Treat them as you would be treated (hey, I think I read that in a famous book somewhere!) and you will feel the love!
