    Grout missing and disintegrating
    Lauren W.

Directly off the Des Moines River downtown and within walking distance of so much that the location alone will make this a popular choice. Our room was so small for $149 and the bathroom showed black mildew (or mold?) and on the caulking. I added the black mold comment because many people will think thy is what it is and even so, mildew on caulking and disrepair along the grouting for $149 per night is simply not acceptable. As well, there were two very large access panels in the ceiling that might suggest a precious large water repair. This is of no consequence except thy some touch up painting (I think) on the access panel was mismatched and something like this thy seems so small speaks volumes about the regular care and maintenance of this place. As well, the caulking was broken between the sink and wall and on the soap dish in the shower. Again, cat $149 per night, off season, this is unacceptable. It was clean enough and although a super tiny room had a nearly floor to ceiling window which is nice. Our room was a bit chilly, though. Parking in their lot is $15 per night and accessible only to the second floor. It is possible to unload from the second floor parking area and then head to a higher floor in the hotel. Otherwise, unloading occurs at ground level and curbside, relatively typical. The pool was closed when we were there and we did not use the fitness center. Their breakfast area is huge and beautiful. The breakfast is not. Staff seems relatively uninterested in their work approaching their work as a job and not a profession. One staff did anticipate our need as my key card do not work and he stepped in to offer to let us in to the room.

    New Hampton in Des Moines

It's probably not fair to review a hotel on their second night of doing business, but so be it. This is a really nice Hampton and it opened exactly yesterday. Yep, the Google Earth view still shows a parking lot but I can promise you, there is a hotel here now! It still has the smell of new paint and new carpet throughout. I think that i was probably the first guest to use this toilet and this shower and sleep in this bed. That's awesome. Nice view of the river area and there is plenty of street parking. We'll see if I get a ticket but for now, I'd rather park on the street and take my chances rather than pay $15 a night for "self-parking." Nice large room, but i might have been upgraded because of my Gold status with Hilton on top of the fact that the hotel doesn't have that many reservations in their system yet. One weird thing. In addition to the usual light switches, there's also a "master light switch" next to the door. I missed that when entered the room and went back to the front desk for a new room only to be told about the switch. That's just odd.

We decided to go on a last minute getaway for the weekend and chose this place to sightsee Des Moines from Not impressed at all with this Hampton Inn! Was not greeted as a Hilton Honors member, did not get my drink and snack, moved me to a different room then I selected at mobile check-in. The guy at front desk seemed to be bothered by my arrival. When I asked him for a toothbrush, paste, shaver and shaving cream I had to keep asking him for each item individually as he kept forgetting what I asked. The room is nice though as I am accustomed to from Hampton's. I sure hope the rest of the weekend gets better. I'll update once we checkout. Good luck to future guests...... Day 2: after voicing my concerns to the Hilton honors team oh, I was assured that management would contact me today to address my issues. It is now 5 p.m. and no one has made an effort to contact me via email or phone. I called the front desk to ask him if turn down service is cancelled and they adviaed me that's a note it's should have been in my room advising me due to the virus situation there is no service sadly I was not able to find any such note and was not made aware of this. also advise them that the phone doesn't work and the toilet continues to run all day and night I said that there is never changes that have happened to the wire Situation period it seems surprising to me that all these issues are due to a virus. I was for the more told that management will not even be in until Monday and if I have a concern I can leave a message. he would not forward a message to management for me and have them contact me right away. so with all that day to definitely worse than the first night checking in, and one of my worst experiences at any Hilton properties sadly to say. I fully understand all the changes and precautions we all must take to protect ourselves for health reasons, however poor service and a non working dirty hotel should not be part of that. Day 3: checking out... The gm called me last night and I voiced my concerns about the service in her hotel and she was very understanding and listened to me assuring me she will look into this and understands that not everything can be pushed if on covid19. It was a pleasant talk and maybe we just had a rough go this time around as everyone is on edge and nervous.

    Beautiful details throughout the hotel.

This hotel is absolutely wonderful! The location is fantastic and walking distance to all the great restaurants and close (but not too close) to the ballpark. The interior is beautiful with lots of attractive details from the lobby area, great seating area for breakfast (which is included along with free bottles of water all day which is a really nice and appreciated touch). The rooms are very nice with the great, white, clean Hampton Inn bedding (which I love), a small refrigerator and microwave, a nicely appointed bathroom with a large tile shower, desk and chair etc. The room is very comfortable and we were extremely happy with it. There is no aspect of this hotel that we weren't happy with from the location, the cleanliness, the service, or the room. Oh...breakfast was included and was very good with cheese omelettes, bacon, biscuits and gravy, fruit, waffles, oatmeal with fixings, and assorted breads, bagels, and danish. Very nice selection. They also have a coffee bar in the lobby 24-7 that has a variety of coffee and tea with flavored creamers etc. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are coming to Des Moines and I will return myself when I come down next :). Very nicely done Hampton Inn.

I'm currently staying two nights here! It's right in downtown Des Moines. I got a scorned suit which has a huge balcony looking over the river. Check in was easy. The entrance is bright and clean. They have breakfast in the morning but I'm never a early bird. My room is a good size for the price! Bed is comfortable, the blanket is itchy. Pillows are nice. It's a short bed. I'm only 5 '3 and my feet hung off the end. There's a fridge and mini coffee maker that's adorable. A sink, a couch and like I said a HUGE balcony. It's to bad I'm here in the cold and not during summer. It would be an awesome spot to watch the fireworks from icubs game. So far... my only complaint was the toilet wasn't flushed. I thought it was pretty gross. There's a ice machine down the hall. I'll update at check out!

The bath/shower was not cleaned well either.

I wanted to acknowledge Stephanie, the restaurant manager, for being very accommodating. She was filling in so the bartender could take a break, and brought our drinks out quickly. Was friendly and nice and even stayed to chat for a while, enjoying our conversation on why we were in town. We were using the mobile door key, and Stephanie even provided us with bottles of water since we are Silver members. On our second day, we had planned to go to a Cubs game, but it was delayed and raining, so we decided to have breakfast at a restaurant. JJ was our server, and she was prompt and friendly, providing everything we wanted, even offering us freshly-made omelets that we did not realize were part of the buffet. We each ordered the omelet, and the chef served it quickly, hot, fresh, and yummy. I also wanted to point out the assistant manager, Adam. We rode up to our room in the elevator with him; he was kind and friendly and asked about our stay and why we were in town. Kudos to Stephanie, Adam, and JJ for making our stay enjoyable with a great staff. The bed was comfortable, the shower was hot, and I loved being on the 8th floor. Elevators were fast. We will be back.

I've been here at the Des Moines downtown Hilton hotel and am appalled at how terrible of a job…read moretheir housekeeping did on our room after our first day. They did a terrible job with our beds- it looks like a kid did it or whoever did it just did a rush job and it's obvious they didn't try at all. The bathroom clearly wasn't touched at all. The sink still had a used hand towel and the surface wasn't wiped down, the trash wasn't changed, and all they did was swap out the floor bath towel. Our toilet still had marks from usage and they didn't clean it. Then the trash can in the living area was also not changed even though it was full, and our coffee supplies were not restocked. I tried to use the phones in the room to call room service and they didn't even work. So I had to call the front desk with my cell, and I was pissed- still am. Whoever did the housekeeping job for our room was awful. I'm not that harsh or picky with hotels but for Hilton, I expected much better service. We are Honors members as well. This is highly disappointing. The front desk sent an employee to restock our coffee bar and give us new towels, she didn't even apologize to me once. She asked me what trash needed to be changed, and then she put the bathroom trash can onto the bathroom sink to change it... and didn't wipe the sink down after. Then she left. Said nothing else, didn't ask if we needed anything. Made zero comments about anything. I wouldn't recommend staying here if their housekeeping service says anything about this specific Hilton. I barely complain about hotel service and am usually pretty understanding having worked in customer service myself, but this was absolutely not okay. They also promised us a room on the 8th floor and then changed us to the 4th floor hours into our check in day, and whoever was above our room was moving around/talking super loudly from 12am-6am, with spouts of coughing and puking. Not a huge deal for the noise since you can't control people, but now I'm pissed about housekeeping and want to rant about more. The plugs are also loose by the bedside tables/lamps, so your phone may not charge without you realizing until later. Overall- the housekeeping job, their service, as well as the attitude of the employee that came to the room after I complained to the front desk makes me wonder just how clean the hotel room really is. It's unprofessional and SO lazy. I do not recommend Hilton Des Moines Downtown. Edit: Next day after- I asked the front desk for the GM's card and talked to the front desk again about the housekeeping from yesterday. They apologized and I showed pictures and told them how the phones were also not working. Just got back to our room after having been gone all day, and when we left, they had people cleaning rooms in our hall at like 11am. It is 5pm now and they still haven't cleaned our room today. My brother saw one of the cleaners and he was just sitting in one of the other rooms on his phone not doing anything. I hate this hotel. Terrible service, unprofessional, and extremely lazy workers. I highly recommend going elsewhere like the Marriott. I expected much better from Hilton, especially being an Honors member. The walls are also very thin. While both times we visited showed two different slew of emotions, the consistent variable was the stay at the Surety. This hotel is beyond accommodating and gives a very cool vibe of old and new and is beyond successful at it. There were several of us that stayed here recently and the staff and management couldn't have been more accommodating. We had lunch one day at the restaurant and the server was accommodating as service was ending at 2p (our order was placed around 1:58p for about 6-8 of us). Later we were told by one of the GM's (Tim?) that would change as they look to remove the time constraints. Going back to (Tim - sorry if that was not your name), he came by later in the night to check on us, was courteous and offered us a free round, which some of us took him up on his offer. 1 Star Hotel with 5 Star Staff…read more Truly perplexed on this one. As a frequent traveler, sleep is the priority when selecting a hotel. Typically higher end or signature hotels offer a premium experience, enrapturing an environment conducive to a home away from home. Not here..... Key points: 1. Before making it to the front door, propositioned to accommodate persons living on the street. 2. Parking: Be prepared to navigate the maze if you utilize the underground parking, NOT located in the same building. Regardless, you will need to walk outside after paying $32 dollars to self-park whether in the underground garage or adjacent lot exposed to the elements. 3. Temperatures outside below freezing, inside could not get the room under what I would guess is 72-75 degrees. Cranked down thermostat, which indicated 63F, but I'm here to tell you, if I'm lying on the bed uncovered and sweating, it's not 63 degrees. The super awesome front desk clerk brought new keys so I could move rooms at 11:30 PM. Yeah, the new room had the same issue. Something is up with the heating and air, don't perceive there's autonomy in room temp...... As you can see in the picture, set on 60 and claims 67. Again, I typically don't sweat at 67 degrees uncovered. 4. If you like trains, you'll love this place, they come through several times a night in between sirens from local emergency responders. 5. Wear shoes at all times. It hurts when you step on the nail head coming up through the rug. 6. Holy towels if you're a person of faith. Quite airy! In summary, if you manage to drink enough from the overpriced mini bar you might get some rest. If you just want a good place to sleep and possibly even get a complimentary bottle of water on check-in, you'll need to go anywhere else. I've traveled extensively, this is in the top 3 worst Marriott properties I've stayed at, better accommodations at any of the low-end properties. Very disappointing!!! Oh, I forgot to mention I moved rooms 3 times and each time I was told it was an 'upgrade.' Which as a Titanium Elite member it's common to receive upgrades upon arrival. All 3 rooms were exactly the same size with the only variation being where the phone was inadvertently plugged in.

This is my experience and do with it what you want…read more I've always had good luck with Embassy Suites by Hilton. This place was a letdown in just about every way. Check-in was super easy as we didn't have to go to the front counter until later on in the evening to get physical cards for the other couples in our room. We got digital keys so we were able to go right up to our room and drop our things off. Before we do that, we normally take pictures of the room just in case there's incidentals or something else. With that being said, I will post pictures of my disappointment with this room. We paid over $250 a night for this room and we're staying 2 nights. The Master room had a King bed, and the second room has 2, I'm going to say double beds, they weren't Queens. There was plenty of room for clothes and what not. There was a small refrigerator along with a microwave. And of course, a coffee pot with coffee pods. There was a couple of bottles of water in the room, but at a cost of $6 if you used them. It was stated on them. The bathroom was tiny! For a room that can have 6 people in it. I wish the sink would have been outside of the toilet and shower area. The exhaust fan also didn't work in the bathroom so the humidity built up from taking a shower and some of the unpleasant odors stuck around. This room was in desperate need of updates! From the carpet being stretched out and written down, and the dusty encrusted cobwebs by the air vents on the ceiling. The tables being worn and wasn't even a chair at the desk in the king-sized bedroom. Most windows, you can open up a couple of inches, and there's a screen on them. Not these in both rooms, they were sealed and bolted shut\n Which kind of sucked in the master bedroom? Because there was no way to regulate the temperature in that room. The fitness area looked pretty decent. There was one couple in our group that did use it and didn't have any complaints. I did use the pool and I have to say, there was disappointment here too. The water itself was cloudy. I was in the five foot deep area and not able to see my feet. Also was extremely chlorinated. To the point where even with your eyes closed in the water, they still burned when you opened them out of the water. There was no shower in the pool area to rinse off before or after you swim. Their hotel bar is quaint, for lack of a better word. Be aware that they do not accept cash. So you either have to charge your room or pay with a credit card. I think the price is what you would expect to pay in a hotel. The mixed drinks were expensive, over ten dollars. But a bottle of Coor's Light was only seven dollars. Parking is right across the street in a parking garage. Dollar per hour or ten dollars per day One saving grace for this place is their complementary Happy Hour drink, and Continental breakfast. The Continental breakfast has a lot going on. You have your Toast, cereal, yogurt, scrambled eggs, sausage, French toast, (muffins, bagels, bread with a nice toaster set up) and a really good omelet station where you can get bacon! Prom was going on over the weekend we stayed, so there was a lot of underage kids there running around till late. There was an issue about 1 AM from a group of them fighting along the second and third floor balcony areas where several cops had to show up to break it up. I don't know what all came of it, I went back to sleep. I didn't interact with a lot of the staff, but the ones I did interact with were great. The bartender was hit-or-miss, but the omelet station lady was awesome. Guest services was good when we went to get keys made. Housekeeping didn't knock on the door the morning of checkout, we did online for that as well, before they entered the room. He just used his card key to come in in the morning to clean. We got to interrupted making our plans for the day.

First, the refrigerator in our room did not work. Even worse, there were ants throughout the room. This is completely unacceptable for a Hilton property. We reported both issues to the front desk, but were told there was nothing they could do. We then contacted Hilton corporate, only to be told they couldn't help either. To make matters worse, there wasn't a manager available at the hotel, and no manager was available through the corporate customer service line either. It was incredibly frustrating to have no one with the authority to address or resolve these issues. What made this experience even more disappointing was the complete lack of urgency, accountability, and customer service. After a 14 hour drive, the last thing any family should have to do is stay up all night trying to resolve problems that should have been handled immediately. When you stay at a Hilton, you expect a clean, functional room and customer service that stands behind the brand. Unfortunately, we received neither. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend this hotel. I hope management takes these concerns seriously and makes the necessary improvements so future guests don't have to endure the same experience.

Upon entering the room it felt a little humid. Noticing the thermostat was on 72, I just turned it down a little. We weren't in the room long enough to notice any issues. Those came when we were going to bed. The room was cute and the perfect size for two people. I love the bedding and pillows and the lamps on the nightstands. Our sink took at least 5 minutes to drain every time we used it. I didn't like how the light switch for the bathroom was on the outside of the bathroom. We moved the toilet paper to a more accessible spot. By the time we went to bed our room was warm and we couldn't turn down the thermostat below 65. Other reviews stated that the west side of the hotel has ongoing and known a/c issues and that was the side we were on. While the view was great (we could see the Civic Center and giant see saw art installation from our window), we slept horribly. I started to resent having paid $220 for a sweaty night sleep. In addition to the hot room, we could hear our neighbor cough, talk, etc. at different points. The walls are super thin. It could have been worse, for sure. We turned on our white noise machine. The 7th floor hallway did have some popcorn on the floor on Friday night. By the time we left on Saturday it was still there. Kind of surprised me given that housekeeping had to have seen it. I requested a 12pm check-out (also through the Marriott Bonvoy app), and at about 11:30am housekeeping came to the room, knocked, and let themselves in. He quickly apologized and said he hadn't gotten the message about our late check-out. No biggie, but it might have been awkward for others. Check-out is 11am, but the signage on the interior door of the bathroom says 12pm. See photo. I'm still giving The Savery 4/5 stars because I had a nice time and love vibe and history of the hotel. All staff we encountered were very friendly. Next time though, I'd request a room on the other side of the hotel, especially during the summer months when you want to run the a/c. Also, there is a parking garage across the street for $1/hour. We opted for the parking garage and somehow got out for free on Saturday without having to redeem our ticket. Not sure if the ramps are free on Saturdays, but they were this day. The hotel offers valet parking for $35. I recommend The Savery because of the location, overall vibe, amenities (they have a restaurant/bar for dinner, separate restaurant for breakfast, and offer Starbucks drinks in the mornings all for additional $$). This is not the cheapest hotel option, but we couldn't beat the convenience from the Civic Center. It's fairly close to the Iowa Event Center, too. Recommend. Just request a room that's on the east side of the building if you're staying during the summer and bring your white noise machine or earplugs.

It was an okay stay, nothing stood out as great. The bathrooms were tiny! If you aren't a petite…read moreperson you would have to sit sideways to use the toilet. Anyone over 6' beware! I'd assume if you were a larger person wide it would also be a challenge because of the distance to the wall on the side was also very tight. Everything else was fine it's a hotel. Rooms were good sized. Elevator doors were weirdly slow but not a big deal. Not bad for a night. Wouldn't want to be there a week.
