I also buy my meat and fish there because everything always looks fresh and the quality has been great. The produce I've picked up has always been fresh too. Don't forget their garden section with a great selection for seasonal favorites. It's clean and very organized, so easy to find what you need. The smell of funky cheese from a few doors down does not help. By far, this place does not look like much of anything. But first impressions are deceiving. This place is a hidden gem. The shop is over a hundred years old and it is a true, old school butcher. For the uninitiated, that means you are not going to find ground beef neatly packaged in styrofoam, but rather an "everything but the oink/moo/cluck/gobble/baa" mentality; they even will sell you a whole goat or sheep to roast on a spit. My advice is to stick around. I myself rave about this place because I got the perfect sized turkey for Thanksgiving, fresh kill, freshly butchered. It was succulent and excellent quality! Even if they don't have what you want in stock, they can get it to you within a few days, and again, they butcher EVERY MEAT OR FOWL KNOWN TO MAN. (You do have to verbally ask for some of their items, since the fridge is in the back as is where the butchering is done: they bring it to you.) They cater to both immigrant and local tastes, something Savenor's does not, and it is worth it-the Vietnamese guy gets his tripe to make pho, you get your prized rib roast, and the Puerto Rican walks out happily carrying a whole suckling pig she has carefully wrapped up to take home for Christmas dinner. Go on, give it a chance. Do what I did and go in advance for the holiday meal. Have your turkey or goose safely waiting for you and eat like a king while idiots fight over a frozen Butterball or a crown roast of meh from Shaw's. Poke at the goat meat, and then learn it tastes like lamb and actually would be a treat if used in a stew recipe. Go look up an old recipe of Julia Child's from the 1950's and realize that the foot of a cow was the old way to get gelatin and if all the instant stuff at the supermarket suddenly goes poof, you are going to be fine: the 100+ year old butcher shop that is older than Savenor's still has the foot, weird though that is.

I always remember the wonderful stories of my Mom running into the famous Julia Child (she's 6 feet tall!!) who was 'French Chef' on WGBH TV to all of the Homemaker cooks de cuisine Française in 1970s America. Thank you and God bless you, Savenor's for lasting so long, and most of all, Chef Julia Child who blessed us mere mortals with the Art of French Cooking! You were a pioneer and role model. My Mom gave me my first cookbook a labor of love co-authored by Julia Child and Simone Beck "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" as a gift. The store was clean and spacious. Plenty of good looking sausages and meats to bring home for cooking, but I came to grab some lunch. I got the prosciutto lovers and was happy with my choice. The bread was soft and a good texture. The sandwich had prosciutto, fresh mozz, basil leaves, tomatoes, and was seasoned with salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil. Was it the most amazing sandwich I'd ever tasted? Nah, it was standard, but for less than $13 for a sandwich that was longer than my forearm, it was a fantastic deal. Service was speedy and the two folks who helped me out were friendly. There were two people in front of me, but I was in and out in about 5 minutes. Looking forward to trying their other sandwiches!

It is not the lack of familiarity with butchery (which I have a lot of experience with) but the better access to higher quality meats and very specific cuts. This we spoke of, this we laughed about, and a simple friendship started. He is a *very* nice individual and truly genuine to all his customers as far as I've observed each time I visit. He learns each one and responds in a unique way to them. With me, it came down to the meats. First time, I simply told him that I wanted to grill chicken and wanted to taste his take on it. He grabbed a pack of chicken leg quarters from the display case and said he'd be right back. About 5 minutes later, I received 6 massive butterflied legs exposing bone and seasoned heavily to be ready for the grill in an hour. He pulled up one of his house cured sausages to go together with the chicken. His smile in the moment sold it. Hours later, I'll just say that his take on it all was worth the visit and more after. I'm a fan and I really like the ability to order specialty cuts if I called first. I like that I can walk in and ask for something not in the display box that if he has the ingredient, would churn out in an instant (ask for really lean ground lamb and he did that on the spot). I like that he remembers people and treats them in a genuine manner every time. I love that everything is fresh and that the prices are really reasonable. And I like more than anything else the words, "my friend, where have you been? I was worried." Idris, thank you for being that butcher I needed in my life. Cheers!
