Queen Anne was built in 1890 as an all girls school until it was later transformed into an exquisite, historic hotel we can enjoy today. The original architecture is stunning with ornate craftsmanship, period antiques such as the grand piano, Victorian sofas, chairs, paintings and relics fill the parlor, library, lobby and halls. Coffee, tea, and water is always available in the parlor and complimentary sherry and cookies are offered between 4-6pm. I missed breakfast during my stay, but I heard they provide a decent spread every morning in the salon. Free parking is even available and checkout is at noon!!! Room rates are very reasonable too! Our room with two queen beds was only $200 a night! The beds were comfortable and the room was clean and furnished with antique furniture as well. We got lucky and booked the last room available upon arrival after we found out our other hotel reservation was unexpectedly canceled. It was serendipitous as Queen Anne is just a couple blocks away from the Regency Hotel where we were attending the Edwardian Ball; everything was on theme! Every staff we met was really kind and helpful. We had an issue with our toilet and they came right away and fixed it. For ice, guests need to bring the ice bucket to the front desk and they fill it. Located in Lower Pacific Heights and close to Nob Hill and Japantown with lots of great restaurants and shops in the area. I would stay here again in a heartbeat! read more

I have to start off this review by mentioning it is two months late. Our stay was for three nights in September, but the actual start of the experience began a few weeks earlier when we called the hotel to ask some questions about the rooms, and we were able to make a reservation with a live person. The person that helped us was Michael, and he was so helpful and answered all of our questions. We go to the City about once or twice a year. Both my significant other and I lived in the Bay at various times in our lives, so we really enjoy going back for short getaways. We had never stayed in the Pacific Heights/Japantown area previously, but we really enjoyed the property and the location. We did not have a car, but for us, one was not needed. There is a lot to do within walking distance of the hotel, and it is easy to get to/from other areas via public transportation or rideshare services. We had an early morning flight and would be getting to the hotel much earlier than check in time. We asked Michael if there was some place to store our bags until check in time and there was. When we actually arrived around three hours ahead of check in, we were greeted by Franklin. We let him know that we knew we were early, but had hoped to store our bags. Lucky for us, he let us know we were early, but that our room was ready and we could check in early. This was perfect! The hotel is old, but with many modern features. As another reviewer wrote, "The furnishings are, of course, old and in another setting might be considered as showing a lot of wear, but in this hotel, it just feels authentic." I completely agree with this assessment! We opted for an executive suite which had a separate sitting area in addition to the bedroom. There was a small refrigerator and a microwave, along with a TV in each room and charging stations for convenience. The hotel offers a morning breakfast, which I thought offered something for everyone. I like to drink iced coffee in the morning, and both mornings we ate at the hotel, one of the staff members was happy to get me a cup of ice. There is fresh water and tea available in the parlor area 24 hours a day, and afternoon sherry and cookies each day. In addition, there is a car service available three times in the morning on a first come, first serve basis to go to local areas in the city. We were able to utilize the service two of the three mornings we were there. The only negative thing that we experienced was that there is no air conditioning in the rooms and it was pretty hot while we were there. The windows did open, but as there are no screens, I didn't want to attract bugs in the room. We got to see Franklin several times during our stay. We were also able to meet Michael during our stay and he was super friendly and helpful, as was all of the staff that we interacted with. The customer service is top-notch and very personalized. You don't always get that at big chain hotels. We really enjoyed our stay, and would consider staying at the hotel again. The Queen Anne is a historic hotel with plenty of vibes in a great area (not that easy to find in SF) with big rooms, uncomfortable mattresses, and a not-good-but-included continental breakfast. In a world with modern everything, it's rare to stay in a place like the Queen Anne. You will feel like you've been transported back in time, and everything about this place is dated because it's old, and that's part of the charm. Even with all the compromises that come with an old place like this, it's a safe place to stay with tons of character in the city. I'm honestly surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reviews this hotel receives because our experience was very different. First, I'm surprised no one seems to mention the beds. They were the worst hotel beds I have ever slept on. Both beds sagged badly and were extremely uncomfortable. Our reservation was for five people, so we expected a rollaway bed. Unfortunately, mattress was in such poor condition that none of the five of us was willing to sleep on it. I brought this to the attention of the front desk, but they still charged me for the rollaway. While it was only $20, the issue was the lack of concern for guest comfort. I had already paid for an additional guest, and when the extra bed proved unusable, I expected some accommodation rather than being charged anyway. I understand this is a Victorian-era hotel, but the building has a noticeably old, musty smell and an atmosphere that felt somewhat eerie. The kids even looked it up afterwards and found that the hotel is reportedly haunted, which probably explains some of the spooky vibe it gives. Overall, the uncomfortable sleeping arrangements and the hotel's lack of responsiveness to our concerns made this a disappointing stay. read more

My husband and I had a great stay. The location is awesome (Pacific Heights close to Japantown) and close to a variety of attractions. Staffed 24 hours a day, I never felt unsafe around the hotel or its surrounding areas. They provide complimentary breakfast daily along with evening cookies and sherry - such a treat! We loved treating ourselves to a cookie or two every evening when we returned from our day trips. The breakfast is pretty good with waffles, lots of bread options, fruit,and juices. I do wish the coffee they served was of better quality but that is my only critique of our stay. All staff we encountered were warm and welcoming. Rates were affordable and parking was $30 a night, which isn't bad for SF. Our room was #416 and was a good size for two adults. Bed was soft but comfortable and the water pressure was great. I loved the walk in closet! Our room didn't have a fridge but there is a liquor store located directly across the street which was very convenient. This is a not an uber modern hotel but a historic place with vintage and antique type furnishings so it was a lot of fun walking thru the hallways and looking at the different furniture. The breakfast is nothing to write home about - boiled eggs, sausage links, various breads, a little fruit, and one of those waffle stations that take forever; and the afternoon tea is also pretty unremarkable (store-bought cookies and a carafe of sherry(, but the staff is friendly and works very hard to keep things clean and well stocked. Really awesome and cozy hotel. The staff are nice. There's also complimentary breakfast. I love all the lounge couches on the 1st floor and each floor up to the 4th. My bf and I lived on the 4th floor and would just sit and lounge. The wooden furniture are homey and beautiful. In our room, we ended up connecting the TV to my bf's laptop so we could use Netflix and watch anime. The room was super comfortable. Beds were so soft. Had a great sleep. Our bathroom had a heater. It was nice. Just no air vent though. In the room we also had a cute mini circular sun room that was divided by a curtain. I could kind of see our car from the window. One thing to beware is that there's limited parking. So you might have to drive around or pay $30/night for hotel parking. Beware that even though you buy the parking pass, the hotel parking might be full and you'll have to park off the sidewalk. We did both hotel and street parking. Woman at check in was very short and rude. Went to my room to take a nap right after check in and someone who works here tried to walk in my room but luckily I had the security lock on. Called the front desk and they basically said as employees they are allowed to access rooms and offered no apology. There was no reason for them to try to get in my room, no maintenance issues or anything. We drove and parked in the hotel's lot for a $30 nightly fee. We took Waymo to avoid the hassle of parking at Fisherman's Wharf; Waymo was a fun and entertaining mode of travel. Golden Gate Park and the Wharf are about 2.5 miles (15 minutes) away. Japantown is a short 2 block walk down Sutter. I can't say enough about how much I love this hotel. I've had the chance to stay here on many occasions and I've never been disappointed. The rooms are all so unique and beautiful in their own ways. The lobby, sitting room, and the hallways are all decorated with antique furniture and decor. If you're lucky enough to come during Christmas time, the decorations are so picture perfect you'll feel like you're in a magazine. They have a good breakfast and cookies and drinks in the evening. SF has a bad reputation, but in Japantown where this hotel is, you wouldn't know it. My car has always been fine in their lot and I haven't seen any thievery in the area the many times I've been there. After I stayed there several times I read that it was haunted and then I had a few interesting experiences there, none at all negative. read more

Hooooly smokes I love it here!! We came in November and it was DECKED OUT for Christmas time. Free sherry and cookies by a big ol Christmas tree while you sit by the fireplace? So charming. There's tea and lemon water available 24/7, and a cute little breakfast every morning (yes, with a waffle maker). Since it's old, we weren't sure if it would be super clean or if the beds would be comfy. Um. The bed was so awesome. We knocked right out in that comfy, comfy thing. And the place was perfectly clean, too. Staff was so nice. I've got no complaints whatsoever and will absolutely be back. I also disagree with another poster who said that it's not near anything. This hotel is so elegant and to respond to another review my room did have a coffee maker I am not sure why there room did not. However, I did have to ask for coffee creamer from the front desk. The staff are amazing everyone we encountered was so kind and helpful. Parking is only $30 although it is not secure we had no problems and could see our car from our room. From 4-6 they offer sherry and cookies. The cookies were delicious and so was the sherry. In the morning they have continental breakfast which consists of bagels, croissants, muffins, waffles, eggs, 2 different kinds of sausage, waffles, cereal, fruit it was delicious. This place was amazing!!! The service was too-notch, the room was gorgeous, the lobby is like a museum and it's Haunted!!! We stayed in October of 2020, during the pandemic. It felt safe, clean, and still enjoyable! We called last minute to see about available and got lucky enough to get a room. We arrived late and had our car packed to the hilt for a camping weekend. The concierge was so amazingly kind to let us know that we shouldn't keep anything in our car (we had parked in the street) and allowed us to wheel it all in and store it in the conference room since we were only there for the night. He then gave us a little run down of the history of the hotel and also gave us some info about late night food places so we could grab a bite to eat. We were so blown away by all the cool historic item that are placed thru out the hotel and even the room. We even did a little ghost hunting! We didn't really see anything but we definitely think we heard and felt something. We asked about it in the morning and the concierge said it was a known area for "experiences". So cool, as we had no idea! Check out was super easy and they helped us get all of our camping stuff back to the car. Walking into the hotel is like walking into the past. Antique decor and cozy! Located very close to restaurants and a small convenience store right next door! The room was cute and comfortable. They have a happy hour from 4pm to 6pm with cookies and Sherry. And a coffee bar that I believe to be 24/7. The hotel clerk/concierge was very pleasant and helpful. I highly recommend this place to anyone traveling to SFO!! Update: I just read some bad reviews. This building is 130+ years old. Some people think they should gut it and update it and make it more modern. I say go stay at a best western if you want that! This place is charming as hell. And you don't get personal service from those hotels. I am currently sitting in the lobby and it's so nice to sit and listen to the traffic, see the people coming up and down the stairs and feeling the bay breeze! To the hotel I say: DON'T CHANGE A THING!!! Update!! The breakfast is very nice. Homemade waffles, sausage, cereal, pastries and more. Very nice! The staff Michael and Franklin were both very nice and professional. Good old fashioned service. You don't find that any more. I stayed at the Queen Anne for 2 nights. Room 410. It's haunted but not really. I experienced nothing strange whatsoever. Let me also state that I experienced the best sleep I've had in a long time, peace and quiet, a calm and beautiful setting with an incredible view. I loved it! What an amazing and beautiful hotel. What's amazing? The furniture, the architecture, the style. They have parking, that you pay for (but what don't you pay for these days), they keep their main door locked, the staff was genuinely kind and made me feel like they were happy I was staying there, and they have an well thought out continental breakfast, and tea time! I'm curious about spirits and haunted spots but this has a 'you are welcomed' atmosphere like I've never seen. Nothing scary about it.. Room 410 is absolutely vintage, straight out of 1900 (minus the tv). I took a lot of photos, walked around and checked out the furniture, the paintings, the layout. If there's one feeling i can describe during my stay it was comfort. I had an incredibly comfortable feeling, a home type feeling, of a cozy bed, beautiful setting, etc. The closest I came to having any kind of paranormal feeling or experience was the scent in the room. It has an occasional vintage perfume scent, not always it comes and goes. You know the scent but you also know it's old. I found myself reading online about the Mary Lake while staying in the room. Room 410 was her former office. Truly an amazing woman. Truly an amazing, fun, relaxing and comforting experience. Thank you to the staff and owners of the Queen Anne. I made a reservation online for the Queen Anne Hotel There was not a disabled option so a week or so before I called the hotel and said that I'm mobility challenged and the person who answered was very angry and said you didn't pay enough money for a mobility challenged room! Really? When she figured out what she said! When I arrived at the hotel the woman behind the desk treated me as though I didn't belong there down right I stood back and I looked at her wow? Why? I am sitting out in my car on the street because there is no comfortable place to sit in the room There is no surface to put any toiletries in the bathroom room 211. I opened up the door and what hit me was dive bar pink bathroom smell with a spray of potpourri. How can they have an ADA disability room with that scent of any sort? I go down to the desk and I ask if they could remove the piece of furniture that was like a smell factory. And he completely ignored me looked right over my head did not talk to me as though I weren't there and I mentioned something about the how the mattresses were really awful but I didn't say awful I said The mattresses are lumpy and he ignored me in the next day I came down and I said could you please turn the mattresses they're really uncomfortable and I tried both of them and all different parts of them This is not what you pay for in a fancy hotel it's not like $15 a night! So I go to the doctor today at one of the doctors and he says to me you know this pain in the bottom of your back is not part of your medical condition where were you sleeping last night he says to me my doctor says to me. So I've been asking them for 3 days to do something about the mattress and they completely ignored me so I called the front desk right before I wrote this and I said you know I've been asking about the mattress whatever I know I said something like I went to the doctor and the doctor said that pain that you can't stand up is from the mattress where were you sleeping last night and he says all right all right I'll turn the mattress and then I wanted to talk about one or two other things and he said he didn't even want to talk about it He said no I have to take care of my staff! Every single human being except the people in the kitchen have behaved in that sort of BAD customer service. I did not come to San Francisco for a hotel PROJECT! The shower is good. My service dog sniffed around the comforters or or bedspreads sniff sniff sniff like wow what's shaking on that stuff I just threw it on the floor My service dog wouldn't sleep on the bedspread! In the past, I've had a lot of subpar experiences with historical hotels, so I was a little nervous about staying at the Queen Anne. But my friend had his heart set on a Victorian B&B style hotel near Japantown, so I took a chance. It turned out to be a great decision. We stayed over Memorial weekend and had a lovely time. The room was clean and comfortable. The front house staff was friendly and helpful. As with all historic hotels, you can expect a certain amount of wear and tear. For example, we had to keep the bathroom door shut at night because the window wasn't well insulated from the cold (the bedroom had blackout curtains and a heating unit that kept us warm). Overall, the important stuff is updated and I had no complaints. San Fran is chilly this time of year, so we spent our mornings by the fireplace with a cup of tea. I was pleasantly surprised the parlor area was never crowded and had plenty of sofa/armchair space. My only complaint is that we were woken up at 1:30 am by an angry guest pounding on his door for 5 minutes and screaming, "Sarah! Open the door NOW!". However, this is obviously not the hotel's fault. read more

The only biz district near by is Fillmore which is about a mile down a HUGE hill (most could not walk back) otherwise it's nestled in a residential neighborhood. A colleague of mine stayed there for two nights and loved the looks and feel of the hotel until he woke up yesterday with insect bites all over his back. While he is not sure if they were bedbugs, the bites definitely came from his room. He has had to isolate his clothing in zip lock bags and may have to destroy them as a precaution. Hotels must make sure that infestations are taken care of before they begin. It is a shame that such a lovely property and visit was ruined by bugs. read more
