First off, Kay is LOVELY. I saw a post on Instagram by a friend of her haircut, and I was in the market for a new stylist. For my first visit, I just got a bang trim but I'll definitely be back for a full cut. Secondly and lastly, the staff get a living wage by charging by the hour, which means gratuity is included in your booking. I booked with Andrea Samuels because she was described as having "expertise in curl techniques." When I arrived at my appointment she was chatty but did not seem to understand when I showed her my reference photos and explained what I wanted... this proved to be devastatingly accurate. I was looking to lighten up my long, shoulder length 2B/2C curls and to trim side swept curtain bangs. I'm no stranger to edgy looks -- I walked in with my hair dyed neon green and my sides undershaved. I wanted a squared-off shape overlaying the shave that retained my hair's volume and length but took out some weight. I mentioned *several times* that I wanted my hair kept long enough to be able to tie up into a top bun. I showed her a photo of me with longer bangs from a previous wolf cut that I'd loved and indicated that those were the bangs I wanted. I also showed her photos to demonstrate the overall shape I was looking for (mullet adjacent) but only because I wanted the front layered shorter than the back. Based on responses, I was becoming anxious about being heard at this point so I repeated that I wanted to retain the length, again. Her first cut took off the entire left side of my head. I was not consulted about the placement or length of the cut which was dramatically more than what I'd requested. I felt over half a decade of curls cascade down my neck. When I expressed concern I was encouraged to wait until it was done. After washing and styling, nearly the entire top and back of my head had been chopped from roughly 8 inches to under 2 inches, often at alarming angles. The only curls left were a bedraggled clump hanging from the base of my neck. I looked like Weird Barbie with a rat-tail. Like someone had taken hidden rage out with kitchen scissors on a doll, only I was the doll. I was in shock and visibly upset. Ms. Samuels was apologetic and offered a $20 discount. I deferred until I realized that not only was I no longer remotely recognizable to myself I also could not put my hair up or back, not even with bobby pins. I was issued a full refund with politeness which I am grateful for. The heavy product used, later left a white powdery residue on my face and clothing. I have also since salvage-cut everything to above ear length. I trust this was not deliberate. I was also looking for a summer-refresh and instead, lost my curls, my color, and cried myself to sleep that night. Take that as you will. read more

I got my hair cut here last Aug. After looking at the various stylists' work online, I was super excited about my appt. Esp as my former hair stylist, who'd been the only one able to give me the exact haircut I'd been requesting for literally years, stopped cutting hair. I have wavy/curly thick hair and I was looking for a shag without bangs. Sounds simple but no, it's sadly not very simple to find a stylist who both understands the cut and my hair texture well enough to execute it at all well, unfortunately. So I got to QoS. My stylist is SUPER nice. Bu then she does something I've never had done in all my decades of going to salons: Turns the chair around so I'm not facing the mirror the entire appt. I thought it was odd but went with it. Mistake. BIG mistake. Why? Because at the end of the cut when she turned me around I realized she'd used a razor on my hair. A RAZOR. And I had no idea she'd used one b/c of the mirror oddness. Listen, I'm sure that there are curly/wavy hair textures that look great with a razor cut. Mine just isn't one of them. How is it even possible to not bother to check in with a curly haired client about using a razor? HOW? I didn't even think to address it b/c usually people who bill themselves as well-versed in curls at the very least ask about using a razor (though in my vast salon experience, almost no stylist has mentioned using a razor on my hair). Almost a year later and my hair is still recovering. It's been awful. My generally great hair was shattered. No curls, very thinned out all long the shaft. A disaster. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars i/o one is b/c the stylist was seriously such a lovely person. So lovely that I can't bring myself to even give her name here. If she does see this however, PLS do not take a razor to a new client's hair without first asking them. I spent $300 to ruin my hair here. Be warned, be careful. read more

I have never had such a wonderful experience at a salon. Normally I walk out feeling good but pretty ambivalent, and go about my day as usual. Not yesterday. I walked out feeling so confident and couldn't wait to send photos to my friends. I can say with 100% certainty that I will only be returning to see Elma from now on. I didn't think there was much you could do with my hair. It's short and curly and I just wanted some weight taken out. Elma approached my hair differently than any other stylist, figuring out that many of my issues stemmed from not even knowing how to take care of my hair or maintain the style after leaving the salon. She did an amazing cut that was designed specifically for my face, and this meant instead of just taking weight out of my hair that would eventually regrow, she actually gave me the right layers to create the volume I wanted without poofiness. My favorite part was how she showed me step by step what I should be doing when I get out of the shower and took the time to educate me. Instead of being given a nice meal, she taught me how to fish. I've been in NYC for four years, and this is the first time I've walked out of a salon knowing full well that this was it--I found MY stylist. Curly girls, take note! read more

TL, DR: Stylist Diamond cut off significantly more hair than requested on myself, after cancer treatment, during first post grow "trim". This review is only for stylist Diamond. I am hesitant to write a negative review because I really hate to affecting someone's business during a recession. On the other hand, I would have appreciated seeing this review before going through this trauma, which I am only able to recount now, nearly about 10 days after I receiving the chop. As someone that grew up in the 90s/early 00s when it was uncool to have so much as a slight wave to your hair, let alone curls, I have had my fair share of bad haircuts. As most "curlies" know, taking an inch from curly hair makes the curls shrink and appear much shorter. I have always trimmed my own hair since moving to nyc, as I just need the split ends nipped, but decided to this highly rated salon which specializes in curly cuts. I underwent chemo and radiation 2 years ago, losing about 1/4 of the hair on my head, and deeply damaging the rest, due to the toxic chemicals put into my body. I had not touched it since, as the process of watching your own hair fall out as a young woman is incredibly traumatic. I tried to book with the owner, who is currently unavailable, so instead booked a consult with Diamond, to make sure I felt comfortable with the stylist before committing to a cut, as I was very nervous. The consult went great. Diamond was very personable and chatty, and put me at ease. I mentioned I made a consult for a trim, which felt a bit silly, but the reason was that I had never had my hair trimmed by anyone since losing a lot of it due to treatment and was nervous. We discussed how much she would cut off, and that it was a dry curly cut, and after would be styled and she'd show me some different techniques on styling my curls at the end. When I showed up a few days later for the cut, it was like she was a completely different person, very cold and not very friendly. She didn't seem to remember our consult at all, asking me to remind her how much we were taking off. when she showed me on my hair what she thought (about 2-3 inches), i said no not that much, just the ends. She proceeded to dry brush out my curls and cut it section by section - basically a wet cut on dry hair. This was super confusing and off putting to me because I have never experienced a curly cut that would brush my curls out. I felt like she kept revisiting the same sections and trimming more and more and started getting really nervous but couldn't really tell how much was being cut because my hair was a poof ball from being brushed out. I tried engaging her in conversation multiple times but she was consistently cold. She never once checked in with me at all, rinsed and washed my hair with scalding hot water, never once asked if the temperature was okay (this was also strange to me as I never use heat on my hair). I had to ask her what the products she was putting in my hair was, and asked her to style it to "tame the curls" as I was so traumatized by how much had been taken off after seeing it wet in the mirror. She never said a single thing about the way she was styling my hair and dried my hair on a heat so high it was burning my scalp. Even when we were finished she never even told me to total or gave me a receipt. This was a terrible experience all around as I would say 2-3 inches was taken from my hair, which will likely take 4-6 months to regrow. In addition I now have spend time and money to buy new styling products to figure out how to style my much shorter hair to elongate the curls so i feel more like myself. I have been avoiding mirrors and couldn't even bear to wash my hair for a week because I still am so traumatized, being forced to relive the trauma of hair loss once again brought back a lot of horrible memories tied to my cancer treatment. read more

I've been to Queen of Swords three times now to help with a haircut I didn't love. Both Hannah and Priya were great at helping adjust the cut through some awkward transitory phases. Once my hair was long enough, I made an appointment with Diamond and wow! I left with exactly what I wanted, which has never happened with a major cut before. I have fine hair that has a slight wave to it and Diamond did an amazing job with a cut that encouraged the waviness. She was extremely attentive to detail and also took the time to explain what products she was using and why, from wash to styling. I've never been one to do much styling, but the techniques she showed me and the products she used are things I could see myself doing regularly. I asked her about the products she used and she sent me a very thorough email about them, which I appreciated. It's been a couple of (humid) days and the cut has held up well, even with minimal styling/product. I've already recommended Diamond to several friends, and definitely recommend checking out Queen of Swords generally. The shop is small and has a fun vibe. I recently moved to the neighborhood and was looking for a new spot to get my hair right for Spring. I called up the shop and two days later I was sitting in a chair with the salon owner, Elma. She was so funny and kind and her place is so warm and inviting. As for the service I received: I did a dry cut. She added layers and gave me bangs for my first time in my life! (Yay!!) She then did a wash and set as well. The whole time she talked me through the steps I could take to boost my chances of having natural waves and added texture. All so helpful and patient. This is the smallest, cutest, and most organized hair salon I've ever been to! I love this place. The women working here are very organized and take their appointment times seriously (so don't be late!). My appointment was with Katie for a dry curly haircut. Now don't judge a book by its cover because Katie is a white girl from Long Island, BUT, I wouldn't trust my hair to anyone else. She is extremely personable. She asks a lot of questions about what you want. She is conservative and very dedicated to protecting the integrity of the hair. My hair texture is a mix between 3B/3C with A LOT (did I mention it's a lot) of volume. She cut my hair, gave me a curly bang, and had me feeling like a superstar. She takes her time to ensure you leave looking and feeling your absolute best. My appointment was at 5p and I left around 7:30p. Now let's talk about the neighborhood that the salon is located in. I got my first haircut in about a year here. I really liked the experience at the salon and I appreciated the transparent pricing model (more expensive cuts, but no gratuity needed). I wasn't crazy about my actual cut when I got it but after a couple weeks I decided I actually liked it (maybe I didn't love her styling, I felt like she put a lot of product and hairspray that made my hair feel like I needed to wash it only a couple days later when I usually go about 5 days between washing). I found Elma and Queen of Swords after spending hundreds of dollars at stuffy salon in SoHo for a crap haircut. My stylist was even complaining about how thick my hair was. It was such a terrible experience. I did a search on Yelp for "curly/wavy haircuts" and found Queen of Swords. Elma and her team are everything that a salon should be. The first visit you are required to have a consultation and it's definitely necessary. She educated me on harmful products for your hair, her styling process, and best practices for getting the most out of my wavy/curly hair! The tips and information she gave me definitely stuck with me and she has changed my hair habits for the better. Also, why don't more salons do dry haircuts???? It just makes so much more sense IMO. I learn something new every time I'm in there, and I love the way they cut your hair based on its natural textures. I leave loving my hair every time, and they don't try to up-sell you on color treatments or products either. They totally understand if you're more low maintenance with your hair and will not pressure you to schedule your next cut/color. They will just tell you to come back when you feel like it's time for another haircut. I've had 3 visits here so far (I get my hair cut like, twice a year) and I've worked with Elma and Amy. I have been going to Priscila for the last three years. She is truly a hair wizard, and I trust her immensely. Sometimes I don't know what I want to do with my hair, and I surrender to whatever Priscila thinks is best - that's the level of trust we have built. I absolutely love their approach, a dry cut with the option for a wash and style afterwards. They are cash only, but are pretty reasonable for a hair salon in Bushwick. After debating if to go to Devacurl & risking spending hundreds on yet another bad hair cut or try another salon in NYC that would charge me less than $100 I settled into this beautiful salon. I was just like you searching through endless and endless salons looking at before and after photos just wish dammit why can't I just look into the future and see how I would end up looking like if I went here or there?! When this salon had the best reviews, best before and after photos so I said my luck can't be THAT bad. First the results are self explanatory. The photo of me on the left is on vacation walking around with my hair like that. I could only have it part to the side because after so long of not having a haircut I decided to chop little pieces of hair which ended up with botched hair ‍ to the right is me a day after Amy (who is heaven sent btw) cut my hair and made me feel confident again!! I haven't part my hair in the middle in over a year and now I can do it again because she corrected previous bad hair cuts and my own bad choices into my dream hair cut. I would give this wonderful little hair salon one million stars if I could. Elma is the best! My hair was pretty long and desperately needed to be cut. I went into my appointment with a few ideas about which direction I wanted to take it in but still wasn't totally sure, so Elma offered some suggestions of her own and helped me decide on a look. I ended up leaving with a cut that falls right at my collarbone and I absolutely love it. I also have straight hair but she used these amazing products to wash and style that brought out a natural wave that I didn't even know I had! She walked me through the whole process so that I would (hopefully) be able to replicate the look on my own, which was really helpful. This super cute and cozy little salon just opened up down the street from my apartment just as I was in the market for a new hairdresser, and I'm so happy it did! First of all, getting a cut and color means at least a 2 hour commitment hanging out with this person, and these gals were such a good time! I went in to get that icy silver blonde color and a haircut and couldn't be happier. Elma, the salon owner, gave me an awesome dry cut and then put the bleach on. Anyone with bleached hair knows this process makes you feel like your scalp is actually on fire but Elma made sure I was comfortable throughout the whole process. I've had two really good haircuts with Amy. I have wavy/curly hair and she knows how to cut it! I also really like the ambiance of the salon. I'm not a huge fan of their price structure, though-- it's unclear what you'll pay ahead of time, and if you want them to wash your hair, it's an additional $10-$20. Since Amy's always adjusted layers after my hair dries, I can't imagine not getting this service. The second time I went, no one told me that they'd raised their prices (even though I'd asked how much to expect over-the-phone, and they knew I was a repeat customer who'd last been there before the price hike), so there was a little sticker shock when it came time to pay. Prior to coming to Queen of Swords, I had never really gotten a haircut that I absolutely loved. I think it's the shape of my unusually small head that makes my hair just fall flat and hang there. I've never had that Cinderella experience where the stylist spins you around in the chair after she's finished and stars fall from the skies when you see how beautiful your new haircut has made you. ...Until now, of course. (disclaimer: Elma didn't spin me around in the chair and there were no stars, but the awesome haircut part is true). I went to Elma on the recommendation of a friend who always has the best haircuts. I'm usually a bit of a spaz in hair salons. I hate that you have to wear that choking cape and literally stare at yourself at your worst. Who looks good in those? As soon as I walked in, I felt comfortable. There was no mundane small talk. No awkward moments. Elma was the kindest, sweetest soul. She cuts your hair when it's dry (which was a double win for me since I hate having to lower my head into those sinks with the tiny cutout for your neck and then getting water all in my ears. And why do most places wash your hair like three times? They put the shampoo in, wash it out, more shampoo, more wash, then the conditioner, then wash it. It's overkill). She flipped my head over and went to work. When I flipped back, I felt like the pretty woman. Finally, a haircut I actually loved! She did such an amazing job and I can't wait to go back. If you're on the fence about this salon, hop off and make an appointment. The prices are super reasonable (especially for Brooklyn). The atmosphere is so relaxed and the quality is second-to-none. Best haircut ever! Elma is amazingly professional, friendly and truly an artist with a pair of scissors and clippers. My curly hair is nothing if not a battle, but Elma was able to tame the beast without even breaking a sweat. In 32 years, I've never seen it look so textured and smooth. Didn't even need to put product in this morning. It looked just as good straight out of the shower as it did while I was still sitting in her chair. And Queen Of Swords itself is just plain lovely. I get my hair done out of town but needed to find somewhere nearby to get trims and had the loveliest experience with Amy yesterday - I was able to get an appointment on relatively short notice and my bangs look awesome! After about a month of growth they were really weighing down my hair and it was great to freshen them up so close to home. I have very straight hair that needed a better shape and she was great with it. She cleaned up an old style on my first visit and reshaped it on my visit this week.
