    Cut by Elma
    Pri M.

I have never had such a wonderful experience at a salon. Normally I walk out feeling good but pretty ambivalent, and go about my day as usual. Not yesterday. I walked out feeling so confident and couldn't wait to send photos to my friends. I can say with 100% certainty that I will only be returning to see Elma from now on. I didn't think there was much you could do with my hair. It's short and curly and I just wanted some weight taken out. Elma approached my hair differently than any other stylist, figuring out that many of my issues stemmed from not even knowing how to take care of my hair or maintain the style after leaving the salon. She did an amazing cut that was designed specifically for my face, and this meant instead of just taking weight out of my hair that would eventually regrow, she actually gave me the right layers to create the volume I wanted without poofiness. My favorite part was how she showed me step by step what I should be doing when I get out of the shower and took the time to educate me. Instead of being given a nice meal, she taught me how to fish. I've been in NYC for four years, and this is the first time I've walked out of a salon knowing full well that this was it--I found MY stylist. Curly girls, take note!

I recently moved to the neighborhood and was looking for a new spot to get my hair right for Spring. I called up the shop and two days later I was sitting in a chair with the salon owner, Elma. She was so funny and kind and her place is so warm and inviting. As for the service I received: I did a dry cut. She added layers and gave me bangs for my first time in my life! (Yay!!) She then did a wash and set as well. The whole time she talked me through the steps I could take to boost my chances of having natural waves and added texture. All so helpful and patient. Loved the experience from beginning to end. I plan on coming back for a color VERY soon. Thank you Elma!!!!!!! You made my day, my week, my month, and maybe even my yearrrr.

This is the smallest, cutest, and most organized hair salon I've ever been to! I love this place. The women working here are very organized and take their appointment times seriously (so don't be late!). My appointment was with Katie for a dry curly haircut. Now don't judge a book by its cover because Katie is a white girl from Long Island, BUT, I wouldn't trust my hair to anyone else. She is extremely personable. She asks a lot of questions about what you want. She is conservative and very dedicated to protecting the integrity of the hair. My hair texture is a mix between 3B/3C with A LOT (did I mention it's a lot) of volume. She cut my hair, gave me a curly bang, and had me feeling like a superstar. She takes her time to ensure you leave looking and feeling your absolute best. My appointment was at 5p and I left around 7:30p. Now let's talk about the neighborhood that the salon is located in. There is little to no street parking people !! Arrive early if you are driving. Be prepared to pay a meter in case you park near knickerbocker Ave.

I love love love Elma and her amazing salon Queen of Swords. I came in as a first time client and was a little nervous. I knew I wanted rock-star hair, a curly shag, and that's Elma's specialty these days. The salon is super cute and tiny. It feels like home. It isn't loud but there is friendly conversation all around. The dry cut was amazing. Elma took her time and checked in with me often to make sure she was on the right path to what I wanted. After the dry cut, hair was washed and then styled and then a little bit more was cut based on what I wanted for my hair. I was 100% made to feel welcome. Understand, I'm 60 years old and older than most clients. I was not intimidated and felt so welcome at every step. Elma's place is so friendly and has such a homey vibe. My hair turned out amazing. Choppy. Textured. And exactly what I wanted. I already made an appointment for another cut. Cut and style was a very fair $150; these are Brooklyn prices remember.

Love this salon! Amy is a great stylist and always gives me a nice cut. She gives great style advice and keeps giving me cuts that are modern, yet still appropriate for my corporate job. I get so many compliments on my haircut. Bonus that they use Deva Curl products, play awesome music and keep a chill vibe in their salon.

I can finally part my hair in the middle

I had a good experience a year ago with Adriana and saw that Vikki had been reviewed well online,…read moreso I chose him to cut my medium length hair into a bob. I showed a reference photo multiple times and had only one specification: please keep at least an inch of length under my chin. My hair is straight and quite easy to work with, so I was confused when he just started cutting from the back and didn't check in with me to confirm that the length felt right to me at any point. He seemed sweet and did apologize when I pointed out the major length issue (my hair now stopped above my jawline) and blamed it on the "wet to dry" transition. However, this length difference was substantial and I have a hard time understanding how a French bob could've occurred accidentally (he did request to take a photo of the before and after). This result was unfixable. When I expressed my dissatisfaction and requested a discount, management was kind and did grant it. While I appreciated the 30% off, I feel that I cannot recommend this stylist -- I now feel incredibly self-conscious and have to wait months for my hair to even reach a length that feels comfortable.
