I've been going here for years to see Kim and Sabrina. As a WOC it's always hard to find someone who just "gets" your hair, especially in an area where there is not a large population of WOC. Kim keeps my ends healthy and light with trims in between having my braids installed, and Sabrina is the queen of installs, wigs, and color. Have you ever gotten so many compliments on your hair, that it's sort of like, "ok, enough already!" ?? I'm there, living that "too many compliments in a day" life. It doesn't matter where I go, people are oohing and ahhhhing over my hair, and the only thing I can really say is, go see Sabrina at Roots Radical. Ive been getting my hair braided since I was a kid, probably about 20 years now or so, and I've never had such incredible, and pain free experiences as I do when I see Sabrina. No headaches, and no pain at all! I know that both Sabrina and Kim work with ALL ethnicities, and they both have quite a few high profile clients of varying ethnicities, but because there are such few salons in this neighborhood that can ALSO cater to WOC, (and SLAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY a head of hair) I wanted to write a review reflects my experience. just overall a disappointing experience for the price. All the staff were very nice and accommodating, but the for the price the service does not hold up at all. The "in-depth consultation" was simply a basic breakdown of steps that we already knew, the haircut felt rushed and wasn't walked through, and there was nothing that went above and beyond. I debated leaving this review for a couple weeks bc Harix and staff there are very nice and personable. I (male, late 30s) had grown out my hair for 1.5 years. I booked a session with Harix bc of online reviews about his specialty with curly hair. When I sat down in the chair I explained what I wanted - a bit of clean up, styling to make my hair more office friendly BUT most importantly to have a style that I comb back while preserving as much length as possible with the intent of growing it longer still. The cut itself couldn't have been more than 15 minutes of rough chops. When he moved to washing my hair I assumed there would be a more detailed clean up after the wash but instead we talked about products. He then said in terms of styling that instead of combing back he was going to show me something different. He set it (I couldn't see bc there was no mirror near the sink) and placed me under a hair dryer station. 15 minutes later he brings me back to the seat and I am (in a word) horrified. Instead of combing back, he has given me a mess of curls/broccoli head with hair going in every direction. Honestly I haven't had a cut that bad since my early teens at the barber shops in the Bronx where there was a significant language barrier. I booked a late appointment and didn't want to lose more hair by asking him to clean it up so I bit the bullet and left. For $200+ I feel like my wants should not be overridden by whatever the stylist thinks looks better, especially when its the exact opposite of what I requested, especially especially without letting me know thats his intention, esp. esp. esp without showing me in a mirror before letting the product set. Also, there was no clean up of the back of my neck, the sides, or my beard. I really felt dissappointed by the whole experience. I've gotten much better service and attention to detail in much cheaper barber shops. read more

I'll start with some positives: The salon feels chill and the staff seemed nice. I got my cut with Harix because he was highly rated online & I was looking for someone good at cutting curly hair. He was kind to me during my appointment and seemed to be thoughtful. I told him I'd been growing out my hair for a couple of years, was just looking to shape up a few bits, and that I wanted to look neater/polished for an upcoming event. But I'm really sad to say he just did not listen to me at all. I don't even know how to describe the cut I got except to say that I looked unhinged and going out (especially going to work) was really embarrassing. Some parts of my hair were sticking out bizarrely. It was very messy and kept falling into my face. Honestly felt like I looked like a clown, it was that bad. I've since thankfully gotten it fixed at another salon. I thought about returning to Roots Radical but I was nervous that the cut would somehow end up even worse. It was a $200 (+ a 20% tip) haircut. The staff were kind so I feel bad leaving the salon a critical review. But I'm sharing my honest experience in the hopes that it will help others looking for a curly stylist! read more

This review is complicated, because the stylist and everyone who worked there were very kind. I was happy with how my haircut looked initially when I left the salon. However, since coming home, I now see that a lot more hair was taken off the top of my head than I had hoped. I had shown the stylist a photo of me after my last cut which I was happy with, and he went way shorter than that cut. Additionally, the hair was thinned out a lot - I did want volume taken out, but this is just way too much volume. Everyone's experience is different of course. I would just be very, very direct about what I wanted. For a $200 haircut (including tip), I would expect that there would be more direct communication about how much length and volume would be taken off and that a reference photo would be followed more closely. read more

I had a really awful experience getting a blow out here. My stylist was visibly high, which I wouldn't actually mind, but he did an awful job on my hair. I tried to resolve this with the business privately by email in order to receive a refund or at least an apology. I didn't get a response. Afterward no response, I left a review on google maps and received an extremely aggressive response from the owner, I believe Kim. Her responding to a customer's feedback ended up just being a barrage of personal attacks on me. I'm okay with a bad hair outcome, or horrible customer service, but not both. After two weeks of not going a day without someone telling me how much they love my icy blonde hair and thinking it's the real thing, I feel like it's time I give a shout out to Roots Radicals and the magical Erica for my glow up. I found this cute salon on google because I wanted "the best balayage in Brooklyn" and it popped up first. I've been coming here since November 2017 and gradually going from light brown to super blonde with one cut thrown in. I've been here 4 times and have left the salon extremely happy every time. Not only is Erica great at what she does, she is fun and easy to talk to and I genuinely look forward to each appointment I have with her. I've been getting my hair cut and colored by Jaime for the past year+ and have never been disappointed. They always find a time to fit me in even last minute, which I appreciate! My usual is a double process (from dark roots to platinum blonde) and a regular haircut or trim. Having jumped from salon to salon in the past I'm familiar with pricing and would definitely say they are extremely reasonable and I'm very happy to have found them. Don't let the interior fool you, while it isn't necessarily super "wow" factor - the service is! The front desk staff are always kind when booking and during payment. They also carry a variety of products including Davines (sustainable beauty- natural products) which I LOVE! I had heard that the owner Kimberly has a reputation for being very assertive/mean to customers - I looked past this when booking here, and now I regret it. I saw her straight up yelling and laughing at a customer who came back in and had an issue with her hair - it was absolutely unacceptable... Also, you can judge a business based on the nature of their "replies" to Yelp comments. See below for examples of this aggressive behavior. I won't be returning. My boyfriend WAS there during the consult, he was the one that paid since this was a gift from him. Check the name on the credit card payment, which btw was slightly less than 300$. I had past experience with highlighting my hair which Is why I mentioned it to you- to make sure we're on the same page. You repeated again and again that since I already HAVE blond in my hair from my previous salon, you'll be able to make it lighter. Everything you wrote in your last response is true, however you said those things AFTER the fact. Seems like your memory of the event is a little blurry, probably since you see other costumers and things can get mixed up. I remember my one experience very well. I am happy to show pictures of my hair which was darker than when I came in since the blond ends were cut off. I booked a last minute appointment for a balayage. I felt very upsold, not listened to, bleach and toner on my ears, face, phone and clothes; my dress is ruined and no one is answering The phone to resolve, their mailbox is also full. Hair was painted with a physical wooden paint brush, rather than a hairdresser-brush. The interior not clean, framed service license is out of date etc, outdated I wasn't asked how I wanted my hair styled. Receptionist was repeatedly negative and 'couldn't wait to leave' I booked $175 for a half head of highlights, and left having paid $325 (excluding tip), I dont think I got what I paid for and would recommend finding somewhere else read more

Kimberly is very knowledgeable informative and most importantly a very good listener. My hair is very curly and has been colored many times before. It started to look brassy unhealthy and flat. After having a discussion with Kim about all of my worries and concerns, she not only delivered everything I wanted but surpassed my expectations. She even styled my Hair the way I like it. I have long straight hair that you think would be easy to cut, but it's always been hard for me to find someone who actually gets my hair! And that I don't want 8 inches cut off when I ask for around 3 or 4. So I was excited to find Lindsey at Roots Radicals. She's a great listener, really wants to give you the best haircut for the health of your hair but also really listens to what you're trying to achieve with your look and delivers! My hair has grown so long and healthy since seeing her. And I've been able to keep up with my trims while also maintaining growth. Lindsey is also fun and easy to talk to. Depending on my mood she'll let me just chill, but will always engage and make me laugh too. Can't recommend this salon or her enough. read more

I got my hair cut here the other day by Harix and it was overall a really great experience. The salon is very clean. My appointment was at 4pm and I was seem right on time. Front desk staff very sweet tho I did not catch his name. I have very curly hair and have been burned in the past by stylists who say they know how to cut curly hair. Harix knows what tf he's doing. Leigh is the best colorist I've ever had. I've been getting highlights for 10+ years but never had any color that I LOVED until I found Leigh. She creates exactly the right shade -a little darker in the winter, lighter in the summer -and blends it in in a way that makes it look totally natural. She really knows my hair too, what will work and what won't, and when it needs a gloss or a deep conditioning. She's also great with cuts. I never got so many compliments on my hair. I should also mention that Leigh's low-key, straightforward, and clearly truly loves her job, which is a nice change from some other stylists. Leigh is amazing. She listened to every single thing I said hair-related (and not). I went in with pretty long hair and looking for a semi-drastic cut and she nailed it. Her technique was quick, precise and she's so calm throughout - none of that rushing you out to make a buck. She blocked off her time to deal with my hair "demands". The gloss and bayalage highlights made my hair look sultry and shiny as all heck. She knows what she's doing, one-hundred percent. All of the other ladies were quite lovely, too. Shannon is an amazing colorist! Not only is she a complete professional, she's one of the only stylists in New York I've seen who doesn't pull any snobbery and made me feel really good about how I looked, regardless of what I came in looking like. I came to her sporting a completely average bob and not quite right one-color brunette boxed job. I have very thick hair and every stylist I have ever seen has always felt the need to remark on it (and shame me when it caused them to have to work longer). But Shannon was a pro and assured me she had seen much, much thicker. I've also been to stylists who do everything to push more products and services on you than you signed up for (usually after a series of Jedi mind-tricks designed to make you feel insecure and ready to drop cash) but that is not Shannon's jam. I left with a gorgeous ombre paint-job that goes from chestnut to peachy seamlessly. I get compliments on it from everybody! It's noticeable and sexy but not over-the-top. I was in the chair for awhile (again, thick hair) but Shannon was indefatigable. She let me know what she was doing every step of the way, which was really fun too. So if you're looking to take your brunette self from mousy to sun-kissed in all the right places, book some time with Shannon. BONUS: She also knows her metal. read more

Ashley is a master with a pair of shears because listens to what you want and is qualified to execute. Plain and simple she gets it. I love the fact that she finishes the hair cut on dry hair when she can see how it lays etc. On another note, I also when in for high lights and low lights that wasn't to successful. Some stylist/colorist fix your hair based on their preferences (I.e. if they like dark hair you're going to be dark if they like short choppy bangs you're going to have the same etc) can't remember the ladies name but she had silver/platinum hair she didn't really like such blonde highlights on me and you guessed it I didn't get them. I mentioned to her why I wasn't to thrilled about my color and she seemed annoyed that I had an issue. Kim (owner) had to intervene and simply tell her to apply a few additional highlights to appease me the client ultimately she did but eh I could tell she didn't want to. I will absolutely go back to Ashley in a heart beat but the other lady.....sadly I'm still on the hunt for an amazing colorist. Partial highlights (just the crown areas roots) and one step color and hair cut put me in the whole $276.00 don't know how that compares to other salons in NY but that was just for information purposes only. read more

Was happy to get squeezed in for a last minute balayage, but shame on me, should have known better. We landed miles and miles away from what the colorist and I had talked about. Immediately told her I hated it. She told me to give it a few days, which I did. Still hated it. Made an appointment with the owner for a fix however the front desk girl made the appointment for the wrong day. When I called to clarify she did not admit fault or apologize but made me feel like *I* had done something wrong. She remade my appointment for a different time on the originally scheduled day, but absolutely dripping with SUCH ATTITUDE. I'm tempted to just forget the whole thing but man, the hair is even worse than their customer service. I think it's worth shelling out ANOTHER $300 elsewhere to fix the mess they made so as to not have to deal with their rude staff again. TL;DR Never ever again, cannot believe this place is still in business and somehow with remotely positive Yelp reviews? I just got a haircut from Cali (or Kali, not sure how to spell it). She's a senior stylist at the salon and I'm super happy! I have curly hair and she gave me everything I wanted my hair to look like, while keeping my length but making my hair come to life again. I had booked a haircut at another salon that was wayyy pricier and the stylist cancelled on me last minute. I needed to get my hair cut ASAP before I left for the holidays and booked at Roots Radicals. I think Cali did a better job than the other expensive salon would have so I'm a happy little lady right now. To my luck and surprise they had one appointment open with Jaime. She was going to have her work cut out with me because my bangs were a nightmare (having formally been twist and cut off), my color had faded to an ashy brown green mess and I had layers in my thin hair that looked like straw. I was in truly desperate need of a hair overhaul...grown out over-processed hair with LOTS of roots showing. A mess. Leigh, my stylist, did a fantastic job with correcting the color by bringing it a few shades down, added a few hints of highlight...and then gave me a nice and easy haircut, without cutting too much so I could still style it the way I typically would. I've had my hair cut twice at Roots Radical in the past few months, both times by a senior stylist (more expensive). The first time, I was pleased with it; all I asked for was a small trim to tidy it up and that's what I got. Sure, I would have preferred not to pay $70 for something so small, but that's how it is. A week ago, I went in and the same stylist cut my hair. Again, I asked for a trim. It looked nice when she was finished, but later on that day I realized that she had taken out all the nuance from the style. I used to have a reverse graduated bob, so it was shorter in back, and the layers around my face were really flattering. She cut the front too short, and completely leveled it at the ends, so there are these awkward chunks around my face; the back on the other hand, is too long and does a weird flippy thing where it meets my shoulders. It looks like I had it cut at the Hair Cuttery (you know, the suburban chain, which costs $20), which would be fine except that I paid $70 (before tip) and now have to live with this really unsophisticated hair style until it's long enough for me to get someone else to try to make it look good again. Nice people working here, and the environment is nice, too -- and I am sure others who give good reviews are legit, but for me this last cut was such a bummer -- especially since there's nothing I can do. Can't get my money back, can't get my hair back. Sucks. read more

I work with Kim and she's awesome! This was my 3rd time to the salon and I will continue to come back. They are always on time and very attentive. I am a natural blonde (strawberry-ish), an extremely hard color to match. A couple of years ago I dyed my hair dark and ever since I have been trying to go back to my natural color. I have been to other salons who had destroyed my hair and had turned it into a two tone nightmare. Kim was able to match my color perfectly! I did not believe that I could ever be this happy with my hair color without shaving my head and starting over completely. It has been 3 weeks since I had my hair cut and colored and I'm still obsessed! The color has not faded at all and as my roots are growing in, it is a seamless transition. I would also suggest doing the deep conditioning treatments, whatever Kim used completely transformed my hair and it still has the shine and softness into the 3rd week as it did when I left the salon. read more
