September 21/2024: Dinner with Slipp. This was good to very good. The food taste was superb. Mine was the Fettuccine Mushroom Truffle in a cream sauce with added Chicken ($38.00). The restaurant was small but was busy as well. The service was good & the seemed efficient. Here's the issue...the portion size was so very small! There was no sauce but the ingredients went well together. Seafood fettuccine gluten free penne was good. The sauce was subtle. It had super fresh tomato & shrimp & generous seafood portions. This restaurant is a huge no no if your looking for authentic Italian cuisine. The selection on the menu is large however, I still couldn't find a dish that sounded appetizing. I ended up settling for the pasta special of the day - ravioli stuffed with kale, beans, & cheese, in a tomato sauce with onions. This pasta had zero taste - except dough and mediocre tomato sauce. My family also did not enjoy their dishes and our overall experience was not a good one. They offer an extensive selection of pasta options, accompanied by a smaller selection of starters, salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts. I had not been at QPC for a very long time. I was craving some Italian and decided to give it a try again, after all these years, just before our most recent lockdown and the ban on indoor dining currently in place. The place was packed for lunch and the main dining room was full. I was taken to the overflow dining area on the second floor, with nice windows overlooking Bloor Street below. I ordered the Chicken Parmigiana (pan-fried breaded chicken fillet with Parmesan, mozzarella, tomato sauce served with spicy spaghetti aglio e olio, parsley, chives and rapini). I absolutely loved the dish. It was well prepared and tasted great. The rapini went very well with the pasta and the chicken. Service was good. Went for a late dinner on Saturday night with friends and family. Service was not that quick but we were not in any rush so it was ok. Ordered the chick parmigiana with spaghetti but changed the spaghetti from oil/garlic to a rose sauce as I told the waiter I do not like pieces of garlic in my food. The food arrived and there was pieces of garlic on the rapini and in the rose sauce. Chicken was hot and tasty otherwise. Ordered 2 seafood salads for $18 a piece which includes calamari, tiger shrimp, mixed greens and garlic toast. They forgot the garlic bread, which is no big deal, so I called and asked them to comp me or credit my account. One of the servers goes to speak with a manager (Matt) who says the bread is not included in the dish....which it is, per their menu (see attached photo). I tell them the same but he insists it's not included or "shouldn't be" included. Basically argued with me over bread and finally shrugged, saying they'll include it next time - so which is it Matt, is it included or not? All this over $5 worth of bread?? Any resto worth its salt would've just comp'd the meal or offered some free apps in hopes it didn't sour the experience, as I came out especially to pick it up. This place was a favourite that I'd visit often but it's evident that the service has rapidly gone downhill. Made a reservation for 3 of us last week. Called ahead to say we would be a little late which they were kind enough to accommodate. However, our friend couldn't make it at the last minute so ended up being just the 2 of us. The host who greeted us was very quick to chastise me and say we should have advised him that someone had cancelled since they were super busy! We had requested a table by the window and it was free but he seated us in the middle of the restaurant. Upon speaking to the waitress a little later on, she said they hadn't been busy at all that entire week and especially that night ! So basically he punished us for not advising that our friend had cancelled! The window table was empty for 45 mins before another couple came and got seated there. We weren't AT ALL impressed as we are frequent patrons and have always gone to Queens Pasta over the years. Never had an issue with the usual gentleman that is the host - maybe owner. Hubby brought me to Queen's Pasta Cafe after he reminisced about often going there with friends when he used to live in the area oh so many years ago. Upon a quick google search we were both pleasantly surprised that the little pasta joint was still open, so we paid a visit. Long story short, this restaurant is everything a neighbourhood restaurant should be. Friendly staff, bustling vibe, daily specials, and A F F O R D A B L E, well curated wines. Pastas are heaping in servings, served hot! Burrata also not crazily marked up - 16 bucks for a generously large one to be exact. And while this might not be the top-your-pasta-with-truffles upscale spot most downtown itallian restos are, Queens Pasta takes it back to a simplier time when food was just good and perfectly cooked and the wine glasses never ran empty. A spot where good friends could get together and laugh, families could unwind with the kids and first dates sparkled a new beginning. Key Features: $13.00 pasta options Don't be fooled by the website. This is not an obnoxious, annoying, restaurant. Why they chose to have a looping dance beat play as their flash-based introduction plays is beyond me. This is what happens when you pay a first year design student to create your website, I guess? And the second page that makes it look more like an Asian massage parlour (I mean, what's going on with that image of the girl, with the slashed shadows across her body?) Now that we've agreed to not focus on the website, but rather on the restaurant itself, it's important to understand that there are a number of daily deals - well, specials, deals is a word that would conjure up thoughts of affordable prices. For the most part, I've stayed away from anything not on the main menu. And, even then, I'll look towards the 13.95 priced meals. There are some cheaper, and some more expensive, but at the end of the day, my math skills tell me that 13.95*1.28 = 17.85. Basically you're looking at $18.00 after tax and tip for a plate of pasta - and that's only if you limit your drinks to water. The food, however, is good. And one bowl will have you filled (if you order noodle-type pasta.) If you end up with the ravioli, or anything that isn't long and stringy, you'll walk away hungry. And after paying $25.00 for the food alone, that's an unfortunate way to feel at the end of a meal. While the restaurant, itself, may seem a little cramped - they have a secret upstairs, through the mysterious door at the back right. What circumstances need to occur in order to find your way up there, I've never quite determined. But the restaurant is a lot bigger than it seems at first glance. Ultimately, the food is really bad. First time I went my chicken was undercooked, which is to say, the middle was NOT cooked. The second time my pasta was over-cooked. The third? (yes I went again) it was REALLY over-cooked! I ask you this, how can a place with PASTA in its name OVER COOK its pasta? I had a birthday dinner here on Sept. 3rd and what a fantastic night it was! With an original guest list of around 20 people the staff recommended I talk to the chef and make a $30 price fixed menu. I felt super fancy and adult planning a menu with the chef. Unfortunately as the day got closer to, I had some last minute cancellations (aren't people the worst sometimes?) but the staff took it all in stride and recommended we do a large table in the main downstairs area rather than the private dining area upstairs as originally planned. I was fine with that. The restaurant is very romantic at night all twinkly lights and soft music. I'd definitely come back here for a date! The food was excellent. Being the birthday girl I tried a bite of every dish and everything was mind blowing. We had a spicy sausage and jalapeno pasta, a stuffed vegetarian ravioli, a chicken alfredo and a salmon with steamed vegetables on the price fixed menu. The main came with a salad and bruschetta and then 2 choices of cake for dessert. The drinks were excellent and left me happily birthday drunk. I had a wonderful birthday here and would do it again! Fettucini in Rosé Sauce Lobster Seafood Pasta Butternut Squash Agnolotti in Rosé Sauce Calamari (amazing) Caprese Salad (The balsamic reduction is fantastic) I'd put this place as a staple for large groups, prices were in the mid 20s which honestly I didn't mind at all. The Greek salad was loaded with black olives, feta cheese and romaine lettuce. Yum. Yum. The selected entree was rotini al rustico. In it I found multiple, bite-sized, spicy sausage, green peas, rotini noodles and generous amount of parmesan cheese. A dash of fresh ground pepper (not required, just my preference), and voila! My meal was replaced but no appropriate acknowledgement of the major mistake. No offer to comp the meal. I had to request at least a comp dessert for $9. Shocking and bad business to not even apologize and comp the entry. I could hardly eat any of the new meal as it really turned my stomach to have a mouthful of raw ground meat in my mouth.
