Recently I had some newborn photos done by Julia Bender Photography. I knew I was going to choose…read moreher for these photos since mid-pregnancy. Julie comes to your home (or location I suppose) and shoots real people using "natural light". You look like you, but softer and nicer. There's nothing gimmicky or staged about her work and after looking at a million photos on Pinterest, I decided that's exactly what I wanted. You can get cheaper shots done at JCP or the like, but people always look a little pastey and you only have a 15 minute window, so you'd better hope your little one isn't crying (for all new moms out there-- that's all infants do). You can also get much pricer photographers, if you're a Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes kind of couple and that's important to you. But I figure, kids change fast and I'll need her to do this annually. For that kind of budget, she's the right pick. It was easy enough to get ahold of her to book the appointment and she was flexible with her dates and times. Fast forward to day of: the little rascal was a crying mess, but Julia wasn't fazed, she was willing to stay as long as it took to get the photos we wanted. Admittedly, baby, husband and I were tired before she was...I probably should have waited until he was a few weeks older to do this. Nevertheless, we shot in different rooms of the house and I didn't feel rushed at all. You can choose a sitting fee (which is comparable to professional photographer' stuido fees, but less than their "on site" fees) and then buy photos a la carte (which is what I did) or you can purchase packages where you will own the rights to the digital prints (prolific facebookers will love these options). Also, I saved 10% for paying the sitting fee in cash. I used it toward the purchase of prints. Full disclosure: I know Julia's husband through work circles and that's how I discovered her work.

To be honest, I took a risk on Dustin…read more I waited until the very last minute to find a photographer for my son's Red Egg & Ginger Party (100th-day celebration) and was on a tight budget after splurging on an expensive venue with a long guest list. It was also my first time using Thumbtack. I scrolled through some of the more "popular" and higher-priced photographers, who also had a ton of reviews, but did not feel that their style was what I was looking for. When Dustin contacted me, I wasn't sure in the beginning due to his sparse reviews; however, upon visiting his website and IG, I was impressed with his portfolio and the depth shown in all of his photos. However, most of the pictures were of outdoor weddings and my party was mostly an indoor event. But it was just days before my event, and his price was within my budget, so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. On the day of the event, Dustin arrived even earlier than I did to the restaurant. Upon seeing him, he was already looking around, scoping out the venue, checking the lighting, and taking test shots. I gave him very little instructions to work with - all I wanted were some family portraits and candid shots of the party. From there, he snapped away for 3+ hours, always patient and in the background of a very chaotic Asian party, and I barely noticed he was there the whole time. Fast forward 9 days (5 business days), I received the thumb drive that I provided Dustin for the photos. He ended up producing and edited almost 400 photos, double what I had expected. As my husband and I scrolled through the pictures, it reconfirmed that we totally made the right choice going with him - he brought all of the care and detail and atmospheric elements of his romantic outdoor weddings to a loud, disorganized brunch party and made everything look timeless, precious and heartwarming. Not only that, he provided color AND black & white versions in both high AND low resolutions. That meant I got 4 copies of each shot to play around with! Dustin blew all of my expectations away from his professionalism the day of, his quick turnaround time, and ultimately, the amazing final photos. Hire this guy, you won't regret it!

It was a beautiful setting and Dustin did a great job of using the backdrop but not having it be everything. He captured the people in a perfect way. The angles and the layouts were great. When he first got to the venue he handed me two bottles of champagne as a "congrats". He was super sneaky - he caught shots of things when I had no clue he was even close to me at the time.
