We had a really good server (so sad I forgot to get her name). The mozzarella cheese sticks were very hot and cheesy also. It is a bit dark in the interior of this place and is not my first choice for dining. But it was still a great dinner and I would get the mini pizza again. read more

Did our R Grotto's change ownership? The last two times, in the last 3 months we went for deep dish. Their deep dish pizza is more like Pizza hut's pan pizza. I hate giving bad reviews, but this is Italian food for those who have no idea what Italian food is supposed to taste like. The waitstaff was very nice and attentive, but the food was a 3/10. First clue was asking for the house vinaigrette on the side salad, and receiving straight red wine vinegar. Fried mushrooms had no body left in them - either well past their prime of fried to death. Chicken Parm - chicken cutlet was fine, but it was buried under way too much mozzarella cheese, and atop overcooked Linguine. Gravy didn't really taste like anything. Wife's spaghetti olio aglio was swimming in olive oil, and more garlic than should be allowed by law. Didn't get any pizza, so can't comment on that. read more

Great place to catch a late bit without being a fast food restaurant. Some times service can be slow and depending who is there some of the girls can be slow but for the most part they are nice people. Depending if you're at the bar that might be little different something I noticed was the bartenders can be easy distracted by talking a lot to their regulars which is NOT BAD but the times I've been there felt completely ignored waiting too long for a refill or just another drink so personality I try not to stop at the bar often. The establishment is clean for the most part there is only been once or twice that I found something that shouldn't have been but you can't blame the establishment for it sometimes we know that some people really can be just nasty and try to make some places look dirty for whatever reason but long story short I definitely keep them in mind specially in those late nights where I want food and is not fast, super greasy food. read more

Food was really good but there were a few things that weren't super great. There was something small floating in my drink, might be dirty ice. Very dissatisfied. Ordered their fried mushrooms that had slim breading, not comparable to others I've had before. Picture attached is from Crispy Chicken Salad. I would not normally think of ordering a burger at an Italian place, but I came in and I'm a regular, and I asked about their burgers, one of the other regulars said that the burger was amazing so I decided to try it. I ordered their burger medium. Took it home and first of all the bun was amazing. The burger was amazing. I would definitely order this burger again and again! This is our go to place - especially because we are late diners and they are open til 11 on weekdays and midnights on Fri and Sat. Love the deep dish loaded up - and add some hot peppers. Get a big one so you have left overs. Actually we are going there tonight. My son loves the bbq chicken thin crust and the other lives the thin crust taco pizza. read more

Open 4PM til 12AM 7 days a week. I have had the four cheese tortellini, it was very good and the portion was large. It came with a choice of soup or salad and a roll. From the moment you walk in the door the mostly younger staff is pleasant and accommodating. On another visit I had the vodka pasta. I thought the taste could have been better with a rating of about 3-5 stars. I may be partial to the vodka pasta at McBrides on 52 in Joliet where it is topped with sun dried tomatoes. Not too long ago I was here writing a good review for R Grotto Ristorante. Unfortunately my last couple of visits seem to indicate a little slippage. I will start with the untrained or undertrained Waite Staff. I have had the appetizer come out with the main course, empty drinks begging to be notice, no return visit to the table after food is delivered to make sure all is good and nothing is needed. The portions have gone from generous to where's the beef. I had a ravioli dish that used to be bountiful, now it has like 10 or 12 ravioli in the center of a huge bowl which doesn't help the feeling of no bang for the buck. Gonna have to step it up. I see less and less people there every time I go. read more

We called and placed a pick up order. We were told 25 minutes. Waited a total of 40 for our food. Bartender went to the back a few times and finally after being inside for 15 minutes tells us that they're wrapping it up. It'll be less than 5 minutes. 10-15 minutes later she came back out from the back and didn't say anything so I asked where our food was. She says it's coming I promise. I asked when. Then I get the snotty reply of we have deliveries, phone orders, and a lot of people in the restaurant. When a customer is told 25 minutes and is waiting 40 with literally no communication unless the customer asks where their food is, and then gets clearly annoyed replies, there's a problem. Not to mention we asked to pay after waiting about 10 min, and then waited until the food actually came out for my boyfriend to get his card back. The other bartender comes out and tells us whatever we paid so far is fine. Seemed like she just wanted us to get out of there... but she did apologize for the wait. I honestly think our order wasn't even put in until we got there. And the annoyed bartender made it an overall bad experience. I was going to leave 3 stars... since the food was really good, until my son told me his meatball tasted weird, and I walked over to see it wasn't even cooked in the middle. It was pink. I promptly called to let them know, and a younger girl answered and seemed concerned and put me on hold. After a minute I got what seemed to be an annoyed "how can I help you" from someone else. I told them what happened and they asked what they could do. Asked if I wanted them to remake the order. I said yes but that it would need to be delivered since I was not leaving my house again in the terrible weather. They said they'd have it out, and I said I would send back the uncooked meatballs, to which I got a sarcastic "thanks". You probably shouldn't be working in the customer service industry if you're going to get annoyed when your customers get upset for their food taking 40 min when they were told 25, and when they get uncooked food. It's not the customers fault when the restaurant screws up. So you shouldn't act as if it is. Only reason I'm even giving two stars is because the other food that was cooked was good. read more

The deep dish pizza here is amazing. It was ready for pick up within 11 minutes, and we got it HOT out of the oven. Price was right too, I would have been happy to pay more for the quality pizza they serve. We had to ask for it to be sliced, I'm not from the area, perhaps that's normal, but they happily sliced the pizza for us. The pizza crust was flaky, and the amount of cheese was just right. Their menu only has a "Cheese" deep dish, but you can add any additional ingredients you want. read more

I recently enjoyed a wonderful meal there with some friends. The bread nugget appetizer (not sure the proper name) was like fry bread -- very tasty, and it came with marinara dipping sauce. The deep dish pizza is phenomenal. One slice of a large pizza really filled me up, especially after eating four bread nuggets. The cheese was high quality and generous. The toppings were fresh. The crust was a perfect balance with the toppings. I thoroughly enjoyed the pizza! I ordered a cannoli for dessert. It wasn't bad at all BUT I prefer my cannolis with a hard shell and this was warmed up slightly, so the shell was soggy (not gross soggy, but soft). The shell and filling were tasty. The filling was light and had little chocolate chips, and the shell was fine. So if you like your cannolis with a crisp shell than you might not want this one. They offer to drizzle chocolate on it also. The interior is so comfy. The booths easily fit 3 on each side. It's a clean and bright restaurant with a few arcade games by the entrance. I lived up the street from LaGrottos in Peru for 7 years. Ordered it a lot, always loved it. R Grotto is basically the same, but I actually thought their deep dish was better! It was the crust. I'm not sure what was different, but I liked R Grotto's better. Not to mention I had a problem with an online order going through that I went to pick up. They were so apologetic and nice about it (it wasn't their fault! It was probably mine.) they let me sit at the bar while they tried to sort it out, but eventually I just stayed there, watched some college football, drank some beer, made a friend or two, ordered food, and took home a personal pizza! Disappointing experience. We arrived for lunch at about 12:30. Only people in the restaurant. Drink/food orders taken right away. Served quickly. Never saw our server again. Sounded like a great party in the kitchen. Were there for about an hour. No one checked to see if we needed anything. Finally saw someone who walked by us 2x. Had to call to her to get her attention. Asked if our server was available. No answer, but got us water and boxes. Server appeared, said nothing, gave us our checks, and disappeared again. Came out long enough to take our cards and give them back. We were so ignored our entire time that, if we weren't honest, we could easily just got up, left, and I'm sure it would have been a while before anyone realized it. If the owner wasn't such a tool, I'd give the food a better rating. The food is good, the atmosphere is good, the owner pretty much erases of the good. They perfectly half cook every pizza so you can cook it to how you like it. Well never had problems before with R grottos here in ottawa,il until tonight. Ordered a large pizza and a chicken sandwich and also chicken alfredo. When the delivery guy got here only one thing was way off. They gave me chicken parmesan instead of alfredo. I had called to let them know. She said that's what was on the receipt which that's not what she repeated to me but had no problem if they were going to fix it. But no they didnt she just told me 3 times that that's what was on the receipt... like I made the receipt. So never had a business treat me like that and not even try to fix there mistake...dont have much to say good about this situation. We were staying nearby for a night to go to Starved Rock and the Burgoo festival. We were tired from hiking and just wanted a light bite, and we had only a few restaurants to choose from and our hotel had suggested this, as a good I-talian place (their pronounciation). I had a dinner salad (basically iceberg with a slice of tomato and a slice of cucumber) and fried mozzarella sticks. They were ok. My friends had a Greek salad, a caesar salad, garlic bread, and bruschetta. I think everything was passable, and we didn't really expect more from this small town. We should have just taken the short drive to Utica though, where I think the options are better. read more

R Grotto Ristorante is the exact same stuff as Lou's La Grotto over in Peru. I think I heard this guy stole all of his grandmother's recipes and went off and opened this place over in Ottawa. I like the pizza and the appetizers but I think most of the other stuff is not that great. This place is set up to look fancier than the one in Peru though but the service is not much better. I don't know if they charge more for their food because I was on a date and he paid the bill so I didn't pay much attention to the prices. I am going to go back and compare sometime. I think when I went I had chicken fettuccine alfredo, mozzarella sticks, and a glass of wine. I didn't think it measured up to Lou's. If you're looking for a nice place to go eat in Ottawa, I would recommend Woody's Steakhouse or Alberto's. The service is not good here and they are just copying off of La Grotto anyway. read more

Had a party for 11 on 2/21/15. I don't know if they were understaffed or what. Our food orders came out sporadically, 2 at a time, only 1 sever. One person in our party ordered an appetizer..... That arrived after his dinner order came. On the plus side, everyone in our group enjoyed their food. My wife and I ordered their Super Subs, which were warm,tasty and very filling.
