This is a perfect spot to get away from the city and enjoy clean air and verdant nature. The rooms have a cozy rustic feel to them without being pretentious, and they were nice and warm (which was one of my concerns for winter). We arrived in the evening and the vibe in the common area of the lodge was welcoming with everyone in a good mood. Guests were chatting with each other, we met some new people, played some board games, and enjoyed the "honor" bar. All of the staff were amicable and helpful without being overbearing. Walking out of our room in the morning, we could hear the sound of the river that passes through Race Brook's property, very soothing. We headed to the lodge for coffee... first things first. I am usually wary of included breakfasts being disappointing but this was great. They had an array of juices, teas, coffee. Scrambled and boiled eggs, english muffins, toast, "american" muffins, jams, oatmeal and fresh fruit. Very healthy and filling! After breakfast, we followed the river up the mountain behind the lodge. You can walk for a half an hour comfortably before getting into any serious hiking. After that it gets a little steeper, but there are rewards like seeing the waterfall... or if you want to really spend some time like us, you can keep hiking to the top where the Appalachian trail passes over the top of the mountain and you get a beautiful view. read more

What a fantastic, eclectic, beautiful place. I spent one night, ONE NIGHT here, and I felt more relaxed than any week long vacation I have ever taken. We stayed in the main house, and all I can say is that whoever decorated this building did everything so right. There is this incredible modern meets historical vibe that the whole main building has going on that I have never seen done so well anywhere. By all accounts antique sconces, tiger print walls, paper Chinese lanterns, and middle eastern beaded pillows shouldn't really go together...but at Racebrook they do! When we were there is was at the point in summer where the brook is actually completely dried up, but the brookside hammocks were completely serene all the same. If you get the chance you should definitely check out Bash Bish falls while you're in the area, it is by far the best waterfall I've been to in New England. The restaurant attached to the main building not only very possibly had the best burger I have ever eaten, but the ambiance is that in which two people could absolutely just fall in love with each other. What an amazing little weekend getaway, will DEFINITELY be returning. read more

I am giving Racebrook Lodge four stars because it is so cute and cozy. But, beware if you want a quiet little getaway. The place is brimming with small children--especially at breakfast time--and parents who seem to think it's okay to let their children scream and yell just because there happens to be other families around. Our room was picture perfect--rustic and romantic decor. It was clean and toasty warm in January (a little too toasty, we ended up turning off the heat at night). Another warning--we stayed in room 23 in the main/inn house and it is located on the first floor directly next to the entrance and across from the tavern. Every time someone comes in/out of the entrance the door slams loudly. And much of the noise from the tavern travels across the hallway. If you are a light sleeper or seeking quiet--this may not be the room for you. Overall this is a fun place...located about a 40 minute hike from the Appalacian trail. Trails lead you into the woods from the lodge. Some guests were skiing/snowshoeing when we were there. The hills frame the lodge and create a very pretty picture. Another nice perk - the Stagecoach Tavern is part of the Racebrook Lodge complex. So it is both convenient and fun to have dinner there--then simply walk back to your room. read more

Take a hike up to the Appalachian trail or take a picnic and your swimsuit to Umpachene falls or Bash Bish. Read Marion P's review - she got it spot on. The Maîtresse d'Hôtel was EXTREMELY rude. She did not greet us, did not seem to want to seat us at all, even though the restaurant was practically empty at the time (4 tables total being served). She would not look at us or speak to us. We were finally seated after practically begging for a decent table, and then she left us there for over 20 minutes without so much as a glass of water. We finally left without eating. Staff was not particularly concerned about our experience except one person. Our room looked nothing like the photo. Very run down, and décor was completely different from photo - completely. Advertised "brook view" and the sound of a running stream. There has been no water since before July (staff told us), and no hint was given. Instead of listening to a brook at night, we listened to traffic (right on the road, deceptive) and screaming kids next door. The room stinks of black mold, esp. the bathroom. We both got sick from the mold. The room has cobwebs, dirt, plenty of dust, and a bunch of spackle mark that were never sanded or painted. There's a difference between rustic and shoddy. At breakfast, both the spoons and the bowls were VERY dirty. Not much on offer - stale bagels. No milk out for cereal and owner was too busy to bother with us. Owner made racist statements in front of us about our ancestors! We were shocked. He did not apologize; rather, he marched out of the room when we corrected his false and defamatory racist statement. They gave us the run around. We had to speak to 4 different front desk people and all they wanted to do was sell us something more - coupon for our next meal, coupon on our next stay. We spent a good part of a short vacation struggling to get what we paid for. Why would be come back? They cater to naive city folk, for whom this may be comparatively rural. It is not set back in the woods. We can see cars drive by and hear them from 6 AM to 10 PM - and we are staying in the Race Cottage in the back. The main lodge is even closer to the street. Only the Barn and Yurt are substantially away from street. I would not say staff is friendly except to people who say, "I'm from NYC!" - One exception who was very, very nice. read more

Lots of wonderful memories at this charming place. I spent my first week of summer here for many years for a camp retreat. I just caught myself recently dreaming of going back. My group spent a lot of time in the barn (all day practically) slept in the simple cabins right next to it, walked to the dining hall (I guess is what they would call it) for an unpretentious, homey breakfast. But the best part was, when I had free time, sitting in the hammock by the brook reading a book or taking a nap. The place is also pretty close to town as we ate out some nights. This place is so simple and thats what make it so wonderful. Hope to go back very soon. read more

Then go to Race Brook Lodge, Bohemian decor, just beautiful artwork and chachkis throughout, not to mention the thousands of books and lots of games. This is by far my favorite place to get away. The honor bar, the Restaurant next door with wonderful cuisine, Prix Fixe menu based on the lunar cycle. David is an amazing history expert on the area, his son is doing a great job running the place, and Eve and Yolanta are great at managing your every need, right down to maintaining the honor bar. I was recently there for a college reunion of about 30 people. The entire staff, both at the inn and restaurant were extremely helpful and accommodating. The rooms were clean, but could use a fresh coat of paint. This is not the place to stay if you want the amenities of a 5-star NYC hotel (TV, plush robes, 24 hour room service, etc). But if you're looking for a relaxed, quiet environment with beautiful silvan grounds, sort hike up to a waterfall, farm-to-table food, this is the place. read more

We had a very romantic stay there for some late season skiing at Catamount, which is about 20 min away. The highlight of our trip was dinner at the collocated Stagecoach Tavern. It, like the rest of the location, has a comfortable, historic, feel. The management was very friendly. read more

What a great find. We stumbled onto RB Lodge late one evening. We had the Treehouse Room which was cozy. It is like glamping - nice cabins/rooms - nothing fancy but all you need And no TV or wifi. A racing brook that you can hear while falling asleep. And a hiking trail behind the space They have live music and entertainment a few times during the week too. The breakfast is the best - real eggs, whole grain bread and nut butters, delicious granola and tasty coffee and more! The breakfast room also has all kinds of games and books to use while there. There is a bar, adjacent to the registration area and the breakfast room, where you can find wine and probably other spirits which I don't recall. Or bring your own wine and have a seat in the breakfast/game room and play games or just talk and meet other travelers. We did not eat in the restaurant but heard from others there that it is terrific. We'll be back. We truly enjoyed it. read more

A magical place with rustic charm, Race Brook Lodge offers a private setting ideal for a weekend retreat or an easy get away. The space for the retreat was a very cool barn structure with beautiful windows showing the natural landscape. It was a nice combination of rustic but well-constructed and modernized with a lot of charming touches. There was always water and tea for the attendees and there were enough bathroom facilities so everyone was comfortable. My room was very comfortable and charming. The pillows are really awesome. A couple of different sizes, I really like that. I found that staff to be really nice and charming. They were helpful and welcoming. The food was fantastic. It was very tasty and they offered fantastic vegetarian options which were delicious and plentiful. The Race Brook Lodge is on 100 acres of land and has a beautiful trail right on the property that climb up to a waterfall. The views from this trail are beautiful. read more

My wife and I visited the area for the first time recently. We chose the Race Brook Lodge because of two bands that were playing in their adjoining music barn. That venue was incredible and the Ghost of Paul Revere and GoldenOak were equally good. Everyone associated with the Lodge was helpful and friendly. We talked with several other couples who were staying at the Lodge and they love their accommodations. So my rating of three stars is for our room not the Lodge. We asked for a suite and they put us in the Tree House room. One room had an ok queen bed. There was a little alcove with a twin bed in it also. Paint was peeling from the walls and the carpet on the floor was stained and well used. The gorgeous hard wood floors were almost completely covered up which I thought was a mistake. The rooms were drafty and the shower had poor water pressure. The cost for the suite was around $260 a night! I felt that the owners could have done a lot more to spruce the place up for that price. The place is definitely rustic. That's ok but rustic can also be comfortable. I hope the other rooms are nicer. Again, the staff were great, the music barn was awesome and the tavern next door had great food! The tree house needs a little work... read more

We went for the 11AM jazz brunch with reservations. We were really looking forward to hearing the band. Got there at 11, they weren't ready. They seemed very disorganized. It was 11:15 before anyone was seated. We were then told that the jazz portion would cost each person $5 extra. This was not advertised. The brunch is on a porch, with canvas and plastic walls. It was 30 degrees outside and pretty cold on the porch. While the staff were seating people there was a worker using a power tool to install some kind of bracket on a ceiling beam, above a table. As we waited we realized the room was very smokey, the porch seemed to be heated with a wood stove that had an open fire, not enclosed at all, with lots of smoke coming into the dining area. I recently had my third amazing visit to racebrook lodge. This place has a lovely rustic, homey feel with all the upscale comforts you want. I have two small kids so love that we could stay in a cabin style room with beds for all of us. Rooms are clean, comfy and cozy. There are hiking trails right outside the door, a pool, plenty of space for kids to run around and explore, games and snacks in the lodge. Lots of hammocks and other cozy spots to relax and take in nature. On the most recent visit we discovered a great lake front beach a short drive away. There is an amazing restaurant on site. (Still dreaming of the summer salad I had there!) It's a great getaway spot, close enough to nyc for a weekend trip. Definitely recommend. read more

Race Brook Lodge is beautiful. Each area of the property has it's own unique way of looking beautiful. The room was very clean and staff was exceptional. My only slight nit-picks are that it's quite pricey if you are looking for JUST lodging and food. If you plan on coming here to enjoy nature, peace and quiet and use the facilities on the property, it's probably a better value for your money. Also, it may not be a good idea to plan on surfing the internet using their free wi-fi, it's just not the kind of place that has or should have a really fast internet connection. read more

Race Brook is extremely charming and the owner (Casey) is beyond accommodating and exceptional.It is located in a beautiful area with a lot to do - hiking, skiing, beer/ distillery tours and visiting local towns to check out the restaurants that offer organic/local foods! Race Brook is a very cozy lodge - make sure you don't miss breakfast at the lodge which offers the most delicious omelets, fresh muffins, local granola and organic local coffee! The Stage Coach Tavern is very rustic - serving delicious food and cocktails! We thoroughly enjoyed sitting by the fireplace in the lounge area before having dinner every night! This place is incredible I went here for a friends weddinng and arrived 5 days early the staff was very accomodating and constantly trying to help. Casey and Elizabeth were particularly amazing! Dave the owner is one of the most interesting characters I have met! I spend a whole night just sitting on the porch chatting with him and his story is something else I highly recommend a sit down with him. I would recommend this place to anybody looking to get married or just looking to get away! you will not be dissapointed. the only downfall to the place is the inn keeper EVE she is the only one there with an attitude the whole time her fake smiles occasionaly dont help hide her condecending nature. If you cant tell I am not a fan of EVE however that being said, no matter how bad she is the rest of the crew there is so amazing that I would go back there again just to hang out with them! I wish I could give them more than 5 stars!!!! read more

There's rustic, and then there's way too funky. We recently stayed there to attend a local wedding, and were very disappointed in this place. We've stayed at many New England B&B's that are as old as Racebrook, but this place really needs some upgrades. Our room was dark, dank and smelled of mildew. The rugs were stained the tiny bathroom smelled of urine. The a.c.wasn't working the night we arrived, and I needed to ask for another shampoo, since there was only one in the room. Forget about robes, slippers or a great breakfast. Coffee was frequently luke warm and even weekend breakfast consisted of either eggs or pancakes left on a hotplate. The pancakes were so cold the butter wouldn't melt on them! I will say the woman who manned the kitchen in the morning was very attentive and did the best she could to make things pleasant. The bed was another issue. Bouncy and uncomfortable. For the amount of money this place cost, it was awful! Another couple from the wedding felt the same way and were very disappointed. Time to upgrade folks! Old doesn't have to be gross! read more

I was pleasantly pleased with my experience at the lodge. I brought my fiancé here for his birthday. We stayed in room #7, which was such a quaint and cozy room. The bed, pillows and comforter were AMAZING! We ate dinner ate the stage coach and the food was spectacular!!! The ambiance and friendly staff made our night just perfect! We were then greeted with friendly faces at breakfast and I had one of the most tasty homemade muffins ever!!! Thank you for making my fiancé's birthday so special, we will definitely be back in the near futre! read more

I was recently at Race Brook Lodge for a wedding and stayed at the lodge and ate at the restaurant there. The food was fresh and the service was excellent. The rustic ambiance was beautiful. My only complaint would be the lodge. They seem to have enough staff but the place was a bit on lax on overall maintenance. All the gutters were filled with debris, the roofs covered in fallen branches and moss. I wish I had a leaf blower and could spend a day just cleaning up the place. They have signs all over to conserve water yet our room faucet leaked and the shower head was not water conserving. The rooms could use a good painting and cleaning as well. Don't get me wrong, if you are in to the whole rustic adventure this place is probably right up your alley. I just think with a little more maintenance this place could appeal to a broader base of people. read more

"Rustic inn" read "dilapidated motel 6" run by 60's commune. Don't expect any luxuries: no tv or radios in rooms, no hot breakfast, not even decaf coffee. If you appear before 8:30 or 9:00 am in the dining room you are shushed and told to "whisper because people are sleeping upstairs." The pool has mildew. Honor bar overpriced. Kitchen staff are not aways available in the morning, and housekeepers may not even show up ("sorry...maybe tomorrow"). These rates are higher than some historic Berkshire inns in the vicinity. You can do better. read more
