But back to the first reason: though I don't catch trains terrifically often at Adelaide station, whenever I do I will pop into the Station Arcade newsagent for a mag. While the store isn't huge, it does have a top selection of magazines across all genres. They even stock my all-time favourite magazine, Lula, which can be hard to find in Oz. There are lots of imports and at pretty good prices too. The staff are super friendly and helpful as well, especially red-head chick (sorry I don't know your name, red-head chick!). Worth a glance even if you're not hoping on board a train.

Luckily, I have drive, a writing addiction, and important information given to me by customer attendants for previous reviews, to remember. Great store for a writer like me. I've been here before several times pretty much just for essential items like the odd multitrip bus ticket, stationery or magazines. The Rundle Mall Plaza Newsagency does feel a little bit empty each time and somewhere you don't want to hang around for too long. Upon walking in, you are emerged in a very quiet culture, complete with several rows of mindless magazines and greeting cards for less than half an hour of fun. I managed to walk around the crowd a bit, to get to the area known as "the great wall of pens", that holds plenty of different coloured pens, pencils, and other stationery. A perfect place to take a visiting guest or regular who has the "writing itch" to scratch off...it'll bring out the inner writer within.

Now, as a bloke, I've noticed that some news agencies have very little in the way of reading material for the fellas. They almost all, pretty much without exception, have stacks of women's magazines. That never really changes. A lot of places limit their mens range to *those* magazines that are wrapped in plastic (apparently to seal in the badness), and maybe a couple of magazines for the dude who likes V8s and other pushrod-powered dinosaurs. Not that's there's anything wrong with them. I've got some varied tastes as a car nut, but the same old Aussie muscle car mags just don't do it for me. So when I walked in here, I wasn't expecting much. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did they have some of the harder to get stuff (like some of the US based VW mags), they had plenty of copies of each. I walked out with my copy of ACVWs, Zoom and HPI, as well as a PC magazine. This place has some real variety. I'll be going back again next time I'm in Adelaide.

So I thought I ought to break out of my Australiana memorabilia spree and review something…read moredifferent. Like a newsagent. And this one already gets points for being the only one around (or the only one I could find). This particular newsagent was completely innovative for having precisely the sort of thing you'd expect to find at a newsagent. How is that innovation, you ask? Well, there was very little in the way of foreign materials. And perhaps it's the inexperienced entrepreneur in me, but I feel as if foreign reading material would make a killing so close to the Central Market. The staff is mostly young and mostly friendly. There was an elderly gentleman there, but it was hard to determine whether he was staff or not, as he sat a little away from the other two workers present. Yet he was still behind the counter. He watched me with suspicious eyes since the moment I entered the store. I felt his eyes trying to make deep whip lashes in the back of my cranium as I waltzed over to the utensil section. I toyed with a pen, tested it out, found it to my liking, and as I went to leave the store this elderly gentleman quite alarmed me. He called out some words I couldn't understand, and through various gestures I realised he was under the impression I was trying to steal something. All I had in my hand was the journal I'd walked into the newsagency with (the one where I write all my reviews). I tried to explain the situation, making some gestures of my own to cross the language barrier. It was then I realised the hand I was gesturing with was gripping a pen - the same pen I'd been playing with before. And one I hadn't paid for. I apologised a great deal and paid for the pen. And from it, I've gained this Mario tip: don't try to steal anything from this newsagent. Not even if it's an accident.

Nice little newsagency with a decent range of magazines. Not all my favourite publications are…read morethere but a decent range are and they have an ok range of stationary and other supplies too. Overall, a nice place to pick up a newspaper or some basic supplies.

Damn, they do a good TV Guide. Sure, the lineup can now be accessed by a click of the Television…read moreremote, but then how else would I be able to read the quality column 'The Big Question', where people write in with important queries such as 'Who was that hot old guy in that movie 'Gigi?' Is he still alive, and if so, can I have a copy of the DVD and maybe his home address?' And, 'That McDreamy guy on Grey's Anatomy, any idea what shampoo he uses?' Another fave of mine is 'Unpacked', where the writer summarises TV series for people who are stupid, eg: 'Two and a Half Men is a sitcom about two men and a boy living together' and 'Private Practice is a show set in a medical clinic.' I have been getting the TV Guide every Sunday my whole darn life and technology will not put paid to this tradition. As for the rest of the paper, it's alright I guess.

Personally I love the Sunday Mail (2nd best to Saturday's Advertiser though purely based on…read morecontent). I do love the tv guide inside but find I just look at the EPG on the screen nowadays rather than the book. But sometimes the teenager likes to try and do the crosswords in there. I love the local news aspect of the paper. They cover all important local news as well important world news you should maybe know about. They also have some info on some country events or news, which I like to read about. There's also some great sections with stuff to do or discounts on things, especially in school holidays. They do some great "special features" as well when required due to the enormity of a particular story to ourselves, it's readers. I, in fact, get it delivered every week and at a cheaper price than I can buy it for from the shops and it is there when I wake up. Easy peasy.

Not my favourite or first choice when it comes to radio listening, however I have listened when…read morethere hasn't been any other station I could tune in from particular places. It is okay as far as sports coverage is concerned and the drive time shift from around 4 in the afternoon is pretty good. I do not enjoy the stupidity of some breakfast presenters and I loath talk back radio if it is all about negative content and people hating everything new or different, so I'm not a big fan of the talk back I've sat through; ultimately it is the music that is good at times, reflects a sort of top 100 style from the last few decades.

This youth community radio station plays new dance music as well as some Aussie, hip hop, pop and…read moreindie. All the people on air are volunteers, so you do get the good with the bad, but at least all the presenters actually want to be there as it is out of their own time. The station has a great friendly youth feel about it, with great on air chemistry of hosts, informative news bulletins morning and afternoon, chat shows and plenty of specialist DJ shows. The talent is pretty good, with some Fresh volunteers getting scouted for bigger and better things in the media industry, but most are just there in between uni and to have a good time playing awesome music with friends. Fresh hold the occasional party throughout the year, including Xmas and their station bday, which always go off for the volunteers, competition winners and listeners. Tradies make up most of the listeners, along with young people, and you always hear random shout outs and track demands which are obviously inside jokes. A great station which promotes within the youth of Adelaide and plays mostly new dance music and remixes of songs.

Half newsagent and half gift store and I love their front window changing displays, it adds colour…read moreand gives ideas to passing foot traffic. They do all the usual newagent services like selling magazines, newspapers, books and lotto tickets also greeting cards, wrapping paper and gift ribbons, bows and tags, etc. The other half is dedicated to giftware, homewares and accessories such as scarves, handbags, jewellery, etc. There are some lovely smelling candles and room diffusers plus placemats and decorative table settings. A great place to stop by and pick up a last minute gift along with all the trimmings, including scissors and sticky tape.
