This youth community radio station plays new dance music as well as some Aussie, hip hop, pop and…read moreindie. All the people on air are volunteers, so you do get the good with the bad, but at least all the presenters actually want to be there as it is out of their own time. The station has a great friendly youth feel about it, with great on air chemistry of hosts, informative news bulletins morning and afternoon, chat shows and plenty of specialist DJ shows. The talent is pretty good, with some Fresh volunteers getting scouted for bigger and better things in the media industry, but most are just there in between uni and to have a good time playing awesome music with friends. Fresh hold the occasional party throughout the year, including Xmas and their station bday, which always go off for the volunteers, competition winners and listeners. Tradies make up most of the listeners, along with young people, and you always hear random shout outs and track demands which are obviously inside jokes. A great station which promotes within the youth of Adelaide and plays mostly new dance music and remixes of songs.

It broadcasts digitally as well! Apart from offering training courses for people to learn how to produce radio it also provides a broadcast platform for members of the community to air the opinions and have their voices heard. A variety of organisations purchase time at the station and broadcast to their community; Sunday is the time when you will hear Baha'i Farsi, Chinese Youth, Nepali Bhutanese and Afghan culture programs. During the rest of the week there are a variety of programs that range from pure traditional jazz through to specialist music shows or programs that focus on human rights and current affairs. You can tune in on a Sunday afternoon between 1pm and 2pm and hear me (yes, Dave "Guru" J, your friendly Yelp Reviewer!) on my show "The Music Wheel" and get a serve of mixed genres from all over, which proves anyone can be a broadcaster on community radio. You can listen on line or by tuning your radio dial to 101.5 FM. But what if you have your own business or service and want to promote it through a community radio station? It's not as expensive as commercial radio, and the community radio does not have commercial advertising as such, but it does have sponsorship opportunities, so you may wish to sponsor a program - or run a series of announcements about your service as a sponsor. Contact the Sponsorship and On Air Promotions person at the station and they will give you all the details you need. The station, like all community radio, is run by it's station volunteers with a few paid staff. The financial support mainly comes from the sponsorships and subscribers - so each year there is a Radiothon to drum up new subscribers who pay a yearly fee and get a range of benefits (including a thriving community station) as a result. Discounts and access to gigs and special days like the annual CD and book sale are all part of being a subscriber. Radio Adelaide is a welcome change from the brassy commercial stations that treat us all like doofuses and mention nothing without accepting a fee for it first, so tune in and discover something magical; who knows, you may want to become a broadcaster yourself one day, and this is the place to train how when you do!

Their variety is definitely unquestionable and with their schedule accessible directly from their website, you can pick what you want to tune in to. The good thing about the radio station is the fact that there are a lot less ads than commercial radio stations. Local reviews and topics also mean that a lot of the shows seem more relevant and enjoyable than the dribble on the other stations. I went here for an interview and the radio presenter was engaged with the topic we were discussing on the morning show, and asked some good questions. The best part about it is the fact that there is now a live stream online that you can tune in to over an internet connection.

Pumping out local alternate music sice the the late 70's 3D radio (93.7FM) is a jem on Adelaide's…read moreairwaves. Catering to the counterculture, young aspiring musicians and radio presenters, activists, political sorts and generall allround wierdos, 3D is up there with my favorite radio stations. The music is diverse, from the heaviest of metal to the chilledest of trance. Hiphop, reggae, indie rock, acoustic, folk and whatever else is going, if it is new, local and entirely unproffessional then you will prbably hear it on 3D radio. Entirely special to 3D is the Monday night event known as the Hillbilly Hoot, which is conducted in an old shed (however I always imagine a chicken coop) out the back of the station. It is effectively hillbilly open mike, although run by a few regulars, and broadcast live on radio, and is generally hilarious. The range is broad, from quite talented to really not talented at all, but the vibe is fantastic and each session is brought to a close by an all in rendition of that hillbilly gospel classic "Will the circle be unbroken." A must to check out if you are slightly interested in that sort of music, slightly interested in strange phenomena, or play an instrument, sing (not neccessarily well) and merely just want to want to have a go yourself.
