Over the past 7 years I have purchased several thousand dollars worth of trees, shrubs, and flowers from Rail City even though the return policy for defective plants is abysmal. A 90 day limit is only honored if the nursery plants the merchandise, otherwise the customer is out of luck. I bought 3 potentilla shrubs this spring, planted them in mild weather, and followed the nursery's instructions completely. Within a couple of days all of them dropped most of their leaves. Two survived, but the third was unsalvageable. I'm an experienced gardener and called the owner, Paul, to request a replacement. He was totally unhelpful, claiming the plants were healthy at the time of purchase-a ridiculous claim to avoid providing a loyal customer a satisfactory solution. There are many other local nurseries to support, and I've spent my last penny at Rail City. read more

Nice store, Poor customer service. We walked all around the store area; there was only a few employees and they were very busy. Too busy to greet a customer or answer a few questions. We went inside, as I approached the cashier area the woman at the counter looked at us and immediately turned her back to me and started fiddling with papers. This place is absolutely terrible and overpriced. The parking and road is a mess, the facility grounds look like a dumping ground, and it is full of hazardous metals and sharp objects. One member of our family even caught and cut themselves on one of their decorations. Owners and staff gave no acknowledgement, apology, or bandage. I was pleasantly surprised to see what we are not the only ones that have rated this place down and hope they go out of business eventually for the safety of others. I love finding new plants and trees that you can't usually find at nurseries. I used to be able to use Monrovia's on-line ordering then pick up the plants from one of the local nurseries that buy from Monrovia-like Rail City Garden Center. Unfortunately, this year Monrovia stopped allowing on line ordering so I reached out to Rail City with the hopes that they would place a special Monrovia order for me. Pawl, the owner, called me back and took my order and I was shocked that he said the trees I wanted would be delivered in a week!! Amazing! I waited the week but was never called by the nursery to confirm that the trees actually arrived. I waited a few days then called Pawl and he confirmed the plants did arrive. I told him I was out of town until the weekend but would be there that Saturday to pick up the trees. Pawl was not very friendly on the phone. I showed up to the nursery on Saturday and spoke to Pawl in person and he was very unfriendly. I told him who I was and was there to pick up the trees. He replied they were mostly already sold and to go in the yard and find what's left. I was shocked! I thought the trees would have been kept separately from their inventory. I walked the yard and found only ONE of the trees I had ordered and was so upset. Luckily a very nice and helpful employee asked me if I needed help. I told her the situation and she checked in the back and all ten of the trees I had ordered were there!! Luckily everything worked out but for a few minutes, I was not a happy customer. But since it all worked out, I will definitely use Rail City again but next time I will be better at following up on my orders. read more

A wonderful little nursery. Of course, this nursery is a little off the beaten path and is a little hidden. It is close to Legends Mall and the Water Park. It can be seen from the water park when in the Lazy River. I do feel like the employees are not as helpful as they can be. For instance, if you ask where a certain plant is located they say outside. LOL I appreciate a little more information and customer service. I came here in late summer to get some more herb plants for my kitchen. They still had a lot of seeds and of course a variety of plants, fountains, outside, and inside decorations. read more

For a short time, I've experienced this garden center through customer service and physically working for. I applied after overhearing this center was in need of workers in both the garden and pond section. Instead of the hourly rate of what i was told that could be and expected, I was hired on to being paid the same rate as someone who can put ice cream on a shelf, what can't even pay for my gas, to do mainly physical labor in cleaning ponds in the weather that is Nevada. Needless to say, at first, visually it is pleasing and the staff are informative about the plants that are sold. However, the owner Paul is the least to be considerate towards his staff and regular paying customers. After today, witnessing firsthand along with staff and a soon to be no longer customer listen to Paul tell a once was regular to shut their mouth then go on being disrespectful to her had changed my mind and others about shopping or even bother recommending this location. The only thing in best regards I have towards Rail City Garden Center is in hopes of the owner changing his demeanor and a sign of the slightest respect. Otherwise, the loss of customers for even the slightest inconvenience would be enough to spark a confrontation. Absurd is what I'd say if I was asked what I think about this business. I hate to be writing this review. Rail City has been my go to nursery for over a decade but that has come to an end after last weekend. I bought upwards of $500 for garden plants, flower baskets, and other garden accessories. They over charged me $40 for 2 flower baskets that I noticed once I got home. I called to address this and gal said to bring them back to the store. This would have been a 45 minute round trip plus however long they were going to take on site. Since I was planning on going back in a week or two once my garden was in to fix up my pond and waterfall, I asked if I could do it then. "No by then I'll forget" was her replay. I asked how much time she could give me. One or two days is what I was told. At this point I go Karen and ask for a manager. I explain the situation to the guy who picks up and he reiterates what she said. I said can I text you pictures so then it's documented and you won't forget. "No bring it back today." I replied that I don't think it's fair that I need to be inconvenienced due to your error after being a long time customer and just spending $500. "You can bring it back today. You were charged correctly we just didn't update the price tag." WHAT? Well that's the end of my rant and my patronage to Rail City. They kept their $40 and I'll go to Moana for the next decade and on. read more

Adam in fish dept was EXTREMELY RUDE and started off the conversation with "most people have no business having Koi" then asked the size of the pond. It's not my pond but I was guesstimating 100gal and he said "that's inhumane!! You need at LEAST 1000 gallons for one koi" When I told him we had happy thriving koi in the same pond for years until a raccoon came and ravaged the pond he told me "I don't have to sell Koi to you" and straight up walked away! In disbelief I went to Paul the owner to ask if he felt the same way because if he did I would take my business elsewhere. He wanted me to go with him to "talk to Adam" and I said no thanks I've already done that if you can't get someone else to help me I'll take my money elsewhere. He shrugged and said "Adam runs that department sorry". Needless to say I have plenty of other "inhumane" options and went to Petsmart to give a corporation my business since Paul doesn't care if his goes bankrupt by horrible customer service and mis-management. I will be making sure to tell everyone I know about my experience so they don't waste their hard earned money on a business that doesn't value it! read more

My sister and I went by to see how the store was. It was so cute! I needed to find a new nursery because I was going to their competition and I bought a plant and a week later it died... they would not take it back and bad mouthed me in front of other customers. They lost my business and Rail City now has my business! I highly recommend Rail City Garden Center!!! I bought a Philodendron Brasil and it is gorgeous! and so healthy!! read more

The plants are great. But don't use their planting service. We used them to deliver and plant a (very) small tree. First they charged for 5 hours of labor to deliver a tree across town and plant it. The guy was here for maybe 30 minutes. Then, when our arborist came by to look at some other trees they noticed that it was poorly planted -- planted too high with roots exposed. Now I have to dig it up and replant it. Never again will I use their planting service, what a disappointment. read more

I just discovered this place and was excited to shop there initially. I needed help about wasp traps and had questions that I talked to the owner Paul about. he was assisting two old people when I walked up and so I stood waiting till he was done helping them. he gave very terse single word condescending responses to their questions forcing them to keep asking more questions to get the answers they were looking for. So when he was done with them he turned to me and we walked over to the spot where Paul had the traps. very condescending again to my questions and treated me like I was some ten year old. he pointed out this spray he wanted to sell me with the traps and I said oh I just use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to kill them. he's like no that will just piss them off and make them sting me because they aren't blinded like with those spray, again like he was talking to a child. I've used IPA both indoors and out for decades on all sorts of bugs and the last thing insects do is fly anywhere after being drenched, and best of all it evaporates afterwards and leaves no chemical residue. The first time I went I asked if they had a veterans discount which they do not. the lady at the counter said instead they have coupons with discounts every month from their calendar. so I see, no discounts for veterans but coupons for excess inventory he wants to try and sell each month. after my experience with this owner Paul I will be thinking long and hard before shopping there again. read more

My wife heard there was a nursery across from the Legends mall that was supposed to pretty good, so, we decided to check it out on a Sunday about noon. It is not hard to find although traffic can be pretty busy on Sparks Blvd. The entrance and street frontage is pretty small but the property goes back very deep and widens out as you go farther in. We parked near the entrance and checked out some of the water features at the entrance. We immediately thought this was really cool. They have a lot of very cool old and rustic yard art and just about anything you might need for your yard. We noticed a sign that said they do a garden show on the radio every Saturday. There are plants as expected all over the place. We also noticed that are a local representative for "Drivable Grass" which is a permeable, flexible and plantable concrete pavement system. We thought this could be useful for our home and are going to inquire for more information. We thought the prices for the antique doors and yard art items were priced high but then again where are you going to find some of these one of kind pieces. Most of the larger trees are located toward the back. We really liked this place and would totally recommend checking it out! read more

It is a massive struggle to get good help here. Mostly they will just ignore you. If you can find EXACTLY what you're looking for it may be worth the trouble. But otherwise go elsewhere. Want a tree? Just take your phone and search the internet about what you're looking at. That's what they do. Want stone? Forget about it. They do NOT want to help you. There are a few decent people there who want to help, but the management could not care less if you spend money there. read more

The plants I purchased here were infested with insects. They wouldn't take them back or make any sort of restitution nor offered any sort of help to get rid of them. Their only focus is on what money they took from me. One had spider mites which then spread to my other plants and the other had aphids. what a waste of money. I recently purchased some plants on MAY 20, 2024 FOR $168.00, I tried to get replacements for these plants today, as they are all dead. I was told they do not guarantee their plants, so no replacements. I showed the plants to the women who helped me with my purchase and a gentleman that worked there and they both said they were dead, and were surprised that the nursery would not give me replacements. I did not not want a refund, just replacements. $168. is a lot of money spent on plants. Buyer beware. They will cheat you when you're at the counter. I called for resolution and they would not budge. Hear me out. I went in after seeing their BOGO. I purchased two of the exact same plant for $12.99. I then saw two more I liked and brought those two up to the counter. They were $8.99. What would you, expect to be charged? $12.99 + $8.99= $21.98, right? Well apparently they enjoy playing games with the customer and will charge you the higher price and give you the lower priced ones free. Had I known they would be this underhanded - I would have purchased them in two orders. Correction. I wouldn't have purchased from them at all. Any business with common sense would not be so scheister and do this to a customer. Such rude people who work here. I called because I purchased ten phlox violet pinwheels. All ten are dead. Only the plants I purchased from this nursery died. My Moana plants and High Country Gardens plants are all alive and thriving. Those nurseries / businesses guarantee their plants. Lady on phone at Rail City who was rude and condescending said if we didn't plant them then we don't guarantee them. A few hundred dollars wasted but at least I know where NOT to go buy plants now. Followed the planting guide to a T as well - I can understand one dying but all ten - definitely not my fault. I've attached a few pics that show beginning and now. I will have to echo many other reviews about the staff of Rail City... the front-line folks are fine, but some of the management team seems somewhat rude and very rushed. I will give them a plus though - I was able to pick up a Stihl GTA26 in record time compared to other Stihl dealers in the area. Rail City has a pretty good selection, comparable to Moana and Greenhouse down in Carson City. If the managers were a bit friendlier, this would be a five-star store, hands down. read more

Just bought some Koi pellets at Rail City Garden Center. The posted prices were $7.99 per pound. Got charged $10.99 per pound. I brought this up to them and they said it was the new price, because the food was a new shipment. That was BS because some of the bins were empty and some only half full. They did offer a refund, but my fish need to eat now. That is fraud and false pricing. Bad business practices. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED!!! As much as I dislike Amazon, I will be purchasing from there until I can find a suitable honest local retailer! read more

We called about the availability of ladybugs and we were told that they had just received them. We arrived and found a line to the counter, and waited there. I asked a lady about the location of the ladybugs and she directed me to the wall past the counter. The lady at the counter gave us tips on how/when to release the lady bugs. Very helpful! read more
