Great locally owned spot. The bartender is from Gillette and is funny and provides amazing service. The general manager made several rounds checking in with guests. I love that type of service. The food was very good and could be better. Crab cakes are surprisingly good, although I would like to see what an additional side sauce could do, the green peppers didn't work on crab cakes for me. We visited this location twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. The food definitely left something to be desired. For the price, the quality was very subpar. The chicken in my wrap seemed like it came from a frozen bag. Honestly, I have had similar wraps in cafeterias. Service was not awful, but "friendly" is the last word I would use to describe it. Our waitress made us feel very rushed, despite there only being 2 other tables. She also acted very annoyed with any questions we had. She did keep our drinks full at all times though. We went to the Rail Yard today for a birthday celebration. The food was amazing. We had the calamari for starters and it was the best we have ever had. For the main course I had a steak and my wife had the walleye tacos. Both meals were really good and the tiramisu was excellent (and free for the birthday boy). Service was good and our drinks were never half empty. It is a little pricey but definitely worth it. My wife and I had lunch here for the first time. It was a great experience. The food was very good, and our server Michelle was so nice and accommodating. We really felt welcomed by the staff and will definitely be back. They have a great happy hour during the week with half off drinks and discounted appetizers. Half portions but double the price. The service was slow granted we did come during happy house so not a lot of people but we waited up front for 5 minutes with no one up front to seat us. It was nice on the inside but the music was rather loud. I got a salmon type pasta and I was super disappointed the salmon on top of the dish seemed to be out of a can or is I was actual salmon it wasn't even a full piece. I frequently travel to Gillette, WY to see family and this restaurant really has a great Team in place as far as service goes, but they really fall short in the quality of food they serve. The sub-par food is a stark contrast to it's great buildout and open air deck. Hopefully the management team can pull it together and equalize the food quality. read more

We went here for New Years. The only positive was that it is a beautiful location. They had a restricted menu that offered only shellfish or steak. (And there was only one option that was not shellfish making it hard for someone with a shellfish allergy who doesn't want a 20oz porterhouse). We watched multiple groups of people come in, look at the menu then leave. Our waitress did not know anything about the wine options other than white, red or champagne. I have tried the railyard a few times and just not enjoyed it. I tried again this past Friday, it was quite busy, but you could hear a pin drop, the place is like a morgue it has no atmosphere. The staff don't seem happy, it just feels like a failing restaurant. I tried the Shrimp wrapped in prosciutto they were very salty, crisp on one side and limp and wet on the other. I left and went to Rib & Chop where immediately you feel the atmosphere, everyone seems to be having fun and there is an acceptable noise level of people including the staff having a good time. read more

Very disappointed in the service and our meals. We had a party of six. The steaks and burgers were over cooked not as ordered. The shrimp was frozen out of a box. I really looked forward to trying The Railyard, which opened earlier this spring. The Chophouse, which had been at this location before, was always fairly reliable but had a kind of worn-out and dated feel to it, so I was eager to see what the new owners had done to the place. The positives: Great renovation of the physical space. It looks great, not overly fancy, but with a touch of class. Rumor has it that they spent a lot on renovations. The service was friendly and prompt. I think the restaurant would be wise to have a policy requiring wait staff to cover tattoos and remove piercings, but in this town, that might be asking too much. And anyway, our server did her job very well. The negatives: The food was, on the whole, pretty average, if not below average. The exception would be the onion ring appetizers. The breading was excellent and the sauce that came with it was pretty tasty. Honestly, they were the best onion rings I've ever had. But you don't go to a place like this for an onion ring appetizer. The entrees ranged from decent to poor. The two in our party who ordered hamburgers liked them, but they weren't anything really special. The fish tacos were apparently good, but that person wasn't raving about them. I got the steak au poblano, which was really just a steak au poivre with a poblano sauce. The steak came with a side of green beans and garlic mashed potatoes. Sadly, there was nothing really good about this dish. The sides weren't great--the beans were fine, but nothing memorable, the garlic mashed potatoes were surprisingly bland, and then topped with a big helping of... sausage gravy. Yes, like biscuits and gravy. It made no sense and didn't go together. The steak was all wrong. I ordered medium rare, and got medium well. Now, au poivre is supposed to indicate a steak "encrusted" with peppercorns. This was more like a smattering. It was as though it had been hastily sprinkled with some peppercorns. The poblano sauce was good, but too subtle to do anything for this steak--and anyway, you shouldn't have to depend on a sauce to make up for a flavorless steak. Overall, the thing was bland and disappointing. There was something else about the place that was kind of strange, which someone else pointed out to me, and with which I agree: the place feels like a steakhouse, and the prices are a bit steep (not outrageously so), but the menu and food are more like a notch above an Applebee's type place. They don't even give you bread before the meal, and the menu options include pizza, steak, burgers, fish tacos, wraps, pasta, etc. It's too bad that they didn't put as much effort into the menu and the cooking as they did into the building. I'm willing to try it again in a few months (maybe they'll get some things worked out), but in the meantime, there are plenty of better options. read more

I have been to the Railyard for lunch, dinner and beverages. Apps are great, overall, the food I have ordered here was pretty good. I love the patio area and happy hour specials which seems like the perfect set-up and more casual for an after-work beer with colleagues. However, the waitstaff doesn't take kindly to that idea. Regardless of tipping well (above 20%) not getting belligerent or over-imbibing, on numerous occasions we have been treated like we are imposing on the waitstaff. Several of them are snooty and act like waitressing is not their job title. We try to support all the local establishments by moving our group around. Every time someone chooses the Railyard, I full-out petition this establishment and making the case that it is a crapshoot that we get the one nice wait staff. But then we go because someone says, "I want to get the _______ and maybe it will be different THIS time." I guess a plus I can say is being treated like crap gives us something different to talk about other than the usual work-chatter. read more
