I ordered shrimp in lobster sauce, an old favorite in Americanized Chinese restaurants. It was served mixed with the pork-fried rice I chose. The shrimp were OK but the sauce was tasteless and had no hint of the lobster flavor I was craving. How have I been shopping next door to this place and never once noticed that there was a Chinese restaurant in front of me? While waiting for a tire repair, my mechanic mentioned Rainbow and that he really liked the pork fried rice. I took a mental note and drove there after the repair as I was starving. I ordered the pork fried rice and a couple of egg rolls. When I went in to pay, I saw them drop the egg rolls in the fryer, a very good sign. I also watched them package up the fried rice. Needless to say, I got in my car and started to eat. The fried rice was steamy and delicious, with a good amount of diced pork and tons of veggies. The egg roll was screaming hot and crispy, with crunchy, tasty filling, and no hint of Chinese five spice, which seems to be a favorite addition of many local Chinese restaurants. There are options for vegetarians, and it was all reasonably priced. I may need to put Rainbow on speed dial. read more

Not impressed. Ordered crab Rangoon, chicken fingers, orange chicken, house lo mein, beef and broccoli. Never received the beef and broccoli. Instead, they gave us two lo meins. Rangoons were chewy like they had been reheated in a microwave. The filling was missing from them. Discovered the missing beef and broccoli when I got home and no way was I Going back to get it. Im always trying to find a good chinese eatery in the area to go to. Here at Rainbow, there were seating areas, a plus. There is a hot self serve tea counter , another plus. In pluses there are minuses. The food was okay , passable but nothing that I will go out of my way to go to. The food came out semi hot and not pipping like I had hope. We got fried dumplings as appetizers and it was passable both in taste and looks. The wrapper was soggy and was not thick or crispy. Its size were smaller which is fine considering what we paid for it. The chicken chow mein was not very flavorful except for the MSG used in its making. There was no other flavor . Primarily takeout with a few tables where you can sit and eat. We had been driving for hours and wanted to get out of the car and have some food. I was excited because it got 4 stars on Yelp which is usually pretty accurate. We walked in and it was freezing inside and we were told there was no bathroom, (which likely means they were not allowing their customers to use the bathroom). My partner ordered General Tso's Chicken and it tasted like mushy dough balls with crunchy bits of gristle inside. I ordered bean curd, which was okay. I also had a vegetable eggroll which was not good, way too much batter and not tasty at all. This restaurant should never have been recieved 4 stars on Yelp, very disappointing. read more

Place is a local secret. Looks are very deceiving. This place looks like the run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant what is so much more. It is a restaurant family run with fresh ingredients and tremendous flavors. I tried everything on the menu almost and I love it all. Food was not bad but nothing special. We were a little disappointed that it took 10 minutes longer than they said on the phone (they said 35 and it took 45 for carry out). It was Friday night and I guess they were busy. Two others were waiting inside when I got there. It looks like a two person operation. They were very nice. We got beef and broccoli and my 11 year old said it's not as good as what we get in TN. I agreed. We also got Chicken Lo Mein and the 13 year old said it was good. Let me start by saying I was pretty excited since this had pretty high overall rankings, so I went in hoping for the best. I'm some what of a Chinese (Americanized) food snob, so know I do lower the bar slightly for take out versus a full serve restaurant. I placed my take out order and was told 30 minutes. I arrived about 25 min later and was told it would be ready shortly. Still had to wait another 20 min though before it was ready. During this time I did have the opportunity to wait in the lobby / dining area which had three 4-top tables. The menu board above the counter look very, very old, faded and you could literally not make out any of the prices it was so dirty. The staff were very nice though and it smelled delicious. My order consisted of hot and sour soup as my girlfriend wasn't feeling good and this is her favorite for a cold. King Pao chicken, spare ribs, and pork Lo mein. Upon returning home we unpacked all the food and was pleasantly surprised they include a lot of condiments, cookies, etc. on to the food. First up was the hot and sour soup. Very bland, my girl friend was so disappointed. I thought maybe it was because her sense of taste was off not feeling well, but in fact it was sub par. The pork lo mein was about average, good but about what you would get at an average Buffett. The King Pao chicken was pretty good, a bit watery but the flavor was spot on and like the level of spice. Finally the spare ribs were okay, now to be fair I've never had these before and wouldn't order again they really taste like chopped pork that's in some BBQ sauce. Overall I was disappointed, but would not say the food was bad. However if I had to be honest I don't think I would go back. read more

Rainbow is easily my favorite Chinese food in the Bangor area. So much of their food is the best out of all the other places, and it's inexplicably cheap. I can get a meal that will fill me up for about $6 there. The lo mein and the pork fried rice are the best I've ever had. The sesame and General Tso's chicken are quite good, and the beef and shrimp are good quality. It's a small place. There are only three tables, and it's just the family that works there (I assume they are all related). If you expect someone to come out and ask how everything is, you're not going to like this place, but if you don't care then I can't imagine someone not liking this place. It also gets a little cold in the building in the winter, but it's usually only when the door is open, and it's more of a takeout place than anything. read more

Amazing! Brewer holds the hidden pot of gold at this Rainbow Chinese food establishment. With the large menu, I ordered a bunch of stuff for my family and I and it was all fantastic. The place was super clean and you could see your food being made as you waited at the tables. The staff was very friendly and helpful (suggested some tasty stuff). Best part of it was it was cheap. After reading the yelp reviews on Rainbow, I decided to forego my regular Chinese restaurant to see if I was missing something. Short answer- I wasn't. My husband and I tried a variety of items, appetizers, General Tso chicken, pepper steak and pork fried rice. The portions were large and the price was quite low. The food was greasy (I had grease running down my fingers when eating some appetizers) and some items (egg roll in particular) tasted stale. The pepper steak was ok, but the meat was a bit fatty. The General Tso was flavorless and the chicken pieces were small and seemed like scrap pieces that had been breaded and fried. The fried rice was ok. The place was clean and the service was efficient. Overall I was quite disappointed with my experience and I won't be going back to Rainbow. For fresh and authentic Chinese food, try Panda Garden on Franklin Street in Bangor. It is the best around. read more

Only real complaint is on the lack of a Singapore Mei Fun but the other stuff makes up for it. I've had 8 different dishes and all good. First time trying it after reading reviews lived in the bangor area most my life never ventured out of mainstream Chinese restaurants. Overall food quality was excellent. Flavors competed if not surpassed larger scale restaurants such as oriental jade. Only real complaints I have is the portion size lots of rice little everything else. Is a take out orientated restaurant, I dined in and was served on styrofoam plates with plastic silverware. Overall good review will probably come again but in take out form. read more
