The love/hate relationship that I've long had with Goodwill continues. The truth is that I love the…read more"idea" of Goodwill. I love the mission of Goodwill. I love the idea of job training for those who have obstacles around obtaining a job. I love the support services. I love the entire concept around Goodwill. After all, I'm an adult with a disability myself and I get excited when I see others enter the job market. The problem I have is that, with very few exceptions, the Goodwill Store concept is a complete disaster. Of course, some are better than others. Historically, this location has been fairly middle-of-the-road. I think because it's a little more set apart it has always felt more like a suburban Goodwill and it's a little cleaner, the employees are a little nicer, and the store is a little more accessible than many Goodwill locations. However, a visit today reminded me of everything that bothers me about Goodwill. I'd had someone help me load a few things to drop off to donate. These were rather nice things - household items primarily. They were put in my trunk and, per usual, I figured I would drop them off while on this side of town. It's an easy process and as a wheelchair user I appreciate that. Unfortunately, "ease" has gone out the window. I pulled up to their donation area and popped my trunk. I let them know I had a box with some stuff in it. The employee mumbled (seriously, it took twice to hear him) that they couldn't get stuff out of my trunk. Um. Okay. You've literally done that every single time I've ever been there. I explained that I was in a wheelchair and it would be difficult to get out, get the box out, and literally hand it to him as he stood right there. He asked "Andrew" who affirmed that they couldn't do it. Okay, so now an organization that has as its central mission to serve people with disabilities can't offer a reasonable accommodation to someone with a disability? This is so completely inept and stupid that it affirms my desire to give up on Goodwill. The stores are not accessible. The employment kiosks for the most part are not disability friendly. Is this how employees are being trained? For bad customer service? I mean, seriously. With this customer service, they can walk right across the street and get a job at Walmart. So, um. Yeah, I took my nice household goods to another non-profit where they had zero issues taking the items out of the trunk. For the record, Goodwill also lost my business today. I planned to finish my drop-off and head inside to shop at a nearly empty thrift store. So, lose/lose for you today. I so much want to love Goodwill, but quite simply it's an organization that gets by on the sympathy factor rather than positive business practices. You want my business? Do better. I'm done.
