The lack of reinforcing safety, lack of knowing policy and the unkindness I have experienced from the staff here... is through the roof. When I joined I was simply told what my ten passes got me access to and what it didn't and handed the schedule. My PT has required me to use both a hot tub and do laps and stretching to help heal my lower back and hip problems and prevent surgery. Rainier Beach was closest to my home that had both, and 6 passes in, I've always been waved through and been given two wristbands--one for hot tub, one for laps because PT orders--on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, only time I can come. Tonight they let me randomly know that they would be charging me two passes at a time if I needed this therapy routine--I would be double-charged from here on to treat my injury. I told them then since this was the only pool with the facilities I needed for healing, and couldn't use other Seattle centers, I would need a refund. The supervisor seemed very proud to let me know that I could talk to their management about it, but they probably won't give me one. No apologies, nothing that sounded like sorry for the miscommunication that was going to take more of your money than you signed up for and were informed of. Just the appearance of: yeah that's not gonna happen, like they were better than me. This was the final straw though, where, refund or not, I cannot go back. The first issue I had was my second time there ever, where a male swimmer I was sharing lanes with kept tapping me, getting too close and came up fast behind me and ran into my feet. It scared me, so I asked the lifeguard to reinforce rules. She made an excuse for him when he wouldn't listen. This was not a teen swimming; he was about 6'5. So instead of doing her job by reinforcing the rule, the lifeguard said "there are lanes over there," for me to move instead of him. I didn't let it slide though, but then it just got worse while I was trying to stand up for myself. I went to other staff members and a supervisor. Next thing I knew they were all standing around in a circle, excluding me, in silence, like they hoped it would fizzle out. They just stood there, together, quietly, and the issue of my not feeling safe suddenly didn't seem to exist to them. I couldn't believe what this looked like from the staff, overall (maybe misogyny and group stonewalling...?). I confronted them again, this time saying I couldn't believe they were not tending to this. They seemed to finally realize this wasn't going to go away. So what did they do?: One of them went to the man and had HIM take care of it. They didn't enforce the rules, they went to him shrugging and forced me to talk to the man face to face, instead of enforcing personal boundaries I was asking for. He luckily was extremely apologetic, but he also didn't know what to do because-you guessed it- IT WASNT HIS JOB. It was THEIRS. His apology helped, but obviously I was so freaked out I needed to speak to the person in charge to let them know their staff didn't know how to handle these situations and how unsafe this was. And... it just got EVEN worse. This person in charge literally asked me to show him the rules posted by the pool like he had never seen them before. I READ THEM TO HIM. Folks, I was in so much shock, I think my IQ dropped that moment. I knew right then that as a single woman, maybe a woman in general, I was not safe there. And if I came back I would have to constantly be on edge. He kept gaslighting me and his argument was that the man had apologized and that a brush or an "accidental touch" was not a big deal. He also avoided any professional apologies himself. They had the swimmer do all the work for them. I've already been persevering every time I go back after that instance, always watching over my shoulder in case, but after tonight now they want extra money I don't have that was never explained nor before implemented- because of a routine I need for preventing surgery.. It's not a choice--I CANNOT go back. For dignity and a sense of safety. And offering another location is no excuse for this disrespect for folks who are just trying to take care of themselves. I'll miss it; it's beautiful~only reason not 1 star. read more

Only commenting about their pool birthday party, as I've never done any other swimming here. It's a great place for kids to play and fairly reasonably priced when compared to other birthday party / pool experiences (much cheaper than Henry Moses). The base price includes 10 kids, no charge for accompanying adults. You can pay for additional wrist bands at the desk. The party is only slated for an hour, which is a bit short, but it was still a good experience in nice warm water with a fun "lazy river" which is actually rather brisk moving. Tons of floaties for use. Some rubber duckies too, which was fun. The room for the party itself wasn't really set up for us (we needed to ask for tables and chairs were all stacked so we needed to unstack them), but they provided goodie bags for the kids. Unfortunately, the bags did include very annoyingly loud whistles. We also only had an hour to eat and clean up, and there is no fridge, but there is a sink with soap. I'd probably come back here with my kiddo. Overall, the facility is clean and the staff are all very friendly. Plenty of parking. read more

The pool used to be kept at a very warm temperature, but they've changed that despite raising prices. A lifeguard kept hounding me about my 7 year old, who was either with me or his 17 year old brother despite his own daughter being in the pool unaccompanied. I only knew because I recognized her from the exact same first grade class my 7 yo attended. I guess the rules only apply to some. read more

Worst pool I have ever went too. It was way too small and it was too crowded. I went with my cousins and one of them got hurt on her elbow. The water was too salty. The ground was too rough. Never coming back. I got sick from the pool. I would rate it 0 stars if it was possible. read more

Looking for an afterschool activity with a kiddo that may not know how to swim and is still getting used to the water? Check the schedules at the RB pool. It's clean and has very attentive lifeguards that can set an uneasy parent at ease. During the week, the open swims are surprisingly not packed...so we've added the pool to our list of things to do! Passes are $40 for 10 visits...so that makes this an inexpensive activity for families. read more

So frustrating. 2 out of 3 times I have come here with my kids there has been some reason why they haven't been able to swim. Random staff training; Kiddie pool is closed (lap pool is not kid-appropriate; 15 minutes in an my kid had purple lips due to the water being so cold); Swim time for adults with no kids allowed, so on and so forth. In addition the wait list for swim lessons for kids is miles long so in practice there are non available. Here in the south seattle area there is a pool desert so unfortunately finding swim lessons for the kids is proving impossible. It is hard to deal with the ongoing disappointment of my kids who want so badly to swim and keep getting turned away. read more

When I hear Rainier Beach, I'm never super excited to venture out that way. Most of us know the sort of reputation the area has, but I decided to go to the Rainier Beach pool with my 8 month old and his grandma. I was immediately super impressed upon walking in. They renovated in 2013 and are LEED certified! It's a huge, awesome space. At $6 per adult for the hour and my son being free, the Rainier Beach pool is extremely affordable. There is a regular good sized pool for lap swimming or for older children, and then there's the playland area where we stick to. There's a water/spray park, lazy river, and shallow pool for parents to swim in with their kids. The space is HUGE and while it's been busy while I've been there, it's never been uncomfortable or overcrowded. The water is kept at 95 degrees which is perfect for big sissies like me and the younger kids who may need convincing to get into the water. The playland swim is daily from 11 am - noon. Love this place for being able to tire my son out and have fun bonding time with him for a whole hour. This will definitely be a part of a regular rotation for us! read more

Visited Rainier Beach Pool recently for a family friends birthday. The newly turned five year old Birthday girl requested a Mermaid themed pool party! Yay! But.... the party is in January. In Seattle. Little kids don't care that it's 45 degrees outside and raining off and on. Enter the Rainier Beach Pool. Centrally located in South Seattle - the Rainier Beach Pool was a great party choice with family and friends coming from Tacoma, Shoreline, Bellevue, West Seattle, etc. it just seemed like the perfect meet-in-the-middle spot for all. And there's a pool! The pool is a little tricky to find- or maybe it's just me that drove past it the first time accidentally. It's a big building and easily seen from the road, but it's located between two schools and to me it looked like part of the school buildings. Add to this the sign at the street is easy to miss on a sunny day. My advice: look for the high school driveway and turn in. The high school will be on the right and the pool is on the left as you drive in the parking lot down the middle. Community pool swim is about an hour at a time. Which doesn't sound like a long time - but after an hour everyone was ready for snacks and a nap! Ha! The pool has two main areas: a larger more traditional lap pool with lanes and a large family pool with sections for toddler wading, a small lazy river and a big tube slide into "the deep end" (which is only like 4ft deep maybe.) The pool party was on the family pool side. After swim time and getting cleaned up and changed in the locker room across the hall- we headed to the party room. It's next to the pool with views of the water and slide. So you're still in the pool area but not actually in the pool. Great for continuing the fun mermaid swimming theme. The community center supplies tables, chairs and a kitchenette with a large fridge in the party room. But it's definitely a bring your own food and beverage situation. Check with the front desk to borrow the heavy duty plastic cart for packing and unpacking party supplies from the car. All and all it was a fun afternoon for everyone! This is a great location for swim lessons for my pre-k daughter. I agree with the previous poster about limited time with each child but for the price it's totally worth it. My daughter enjoys being in the water with the other kids and overall, it's working for us for sure. We started with the tot and parent classes- took 2- then moved on to the bigger kid lessons and took 3 sessions so far. She's comfortable in the water, loves the instructors and has a basic understanding of swimming overall. One on one is a good next step but for a great activity once a week- conveniently timed as well- I think it's a great deal. read more

Had my kid's birthday party here recently as he's really into swimming and it went super well. They tore down the old/run-down community center and pool that was here and in its place put up a super shiny new facility with all the amenities you could want. There's two separate pools - one with a slide, lazy river, play area and hot tub for all the family fun you could want; the other with 6-full lap lanes and a diving board. The showers and changing/locker rooms are super nice - especially compared to the older community centers that were built in the 60s and 70s. There's also a small fitness room and a bunch of multi-purpose rooms that appear to hold classes or can be rented by groups for events. Outside there's a nice new playground and some green areas for kids to run around in. I wish there were even more public facilities like this as I think it's a great asset to the community and city for these types of places to be accessible to all. read more

My kids are taking lessons here. $33 for 6 weekly lessons is a good price, but it comes...at a price. There are nine kids in my son's class, which means he gets about 5 minutes of individual attention during the 30 minute session. The students aren't learning much which the other kids are being taught. When this session is over, I'm going to opt for the $30/30 minute private lesson on a less frequent basis. I think he'll get a lot more out of it. read more

Very nice pool (great temperature), very nice locker rooms! The lap pool had 5 lanes total (one was a very wide lane for the easy swimmers). One end was about 4 feet deep which made resting between laps nice. Locker rooms were very clean - you can lock your belongings with a quarter, take the key, and upon returning and opening the locker again, it returns your quarter (a very neat feature in my opinion). There was a separate open shower room and another shower room with individual stalls with curtains. The locker room also had a bathroom area and mirror area including a swim-suit dryer and wall dryers for your hair/body. $5.25 for a daily use and 50 cents for a towel rental. Over all very clean and nice pool and facilities! I will return. read more

Great pool and community center. So far we are just enjoying the play land side with lazy river, fountain and slide. We took the tot, just shy of two months old, for a swim. The family locker rooms are handy, nice wide benches, shower, changing table etc. Clean, well staffed. Note it does sell out during peak times (weekends) so get there early to buy wristband. If just going to watch your wee one (who needs to be attended to in the pool with adult) just ask for separate colored wristband. Clearly this place is putting the community in community center. This place rocks. The water is warm and the pool is clean and there is a good waterslide. Just wish they were open longer. Just when you're into the whole experience the time is up. The shifts need to be more like 3 hours instead of just 1. The rest of the facility is also excellent. This whole place is worth the drive even from north of downtown. read more

Best kept secret in Rainier Valley, the Rainier Beach Pool is one of my favorite neighborhood hangouts. Unfortunately it has no early morning lap swim, but it does have some decent evening hours, and the Saturday 9-10 swim is never overcrowded. Even better is the hip-hop water aerobics classes that are offered many times during the week, though admittedly there is at least on instructor who blasts the music a bit too loud. Not long ago the pool got new LED lights, and on rare and happy occasions, the instructors will dim the overhead lights, and set the underwater ones flashing in a wave of color. Currently the parking situation does suck though, due to construction, and within the last year there was a small problem with people having their catalytic converters stolen while parked here. But other than that...its great. read more

How is it that they have me pay for a seasonal swimming lessons, yet never bothered to send a email, a call or something to let me know the lessons have been cancelled due to an event!!!! It's 2018!!! I shouldn't have to drive all the way there just to turn back around with a car full of disappointed kids!!! Not to mention the attitude on the dude at the counter! If you are looking for lap swim suggest you look elsewhere. Pool was too warm. Lap lanes were designated as slow, fast, faster and fastest. These designations were not enforced by the staff or swimmers. Very disorganized. Swimmers are lacking in lap swim etiquette. read more

My first time to this pool, with lots of pressure from my son who has gone a few times for summer camp, I'm in love, I had a blast. Water slide,whirlpool, hot tub, shallow pool , a circle pool that pulls you along or swim against, a children's shallow fun pool, swim jackets, pool noodles, dive rings provided. Lockers, A competition pool next door with many classes to take, separate changing stalls, with showers, bathing suit dryer and many lifeguards. The only reason I am giving this pool a 4 star is because some of their equipment is broken and has been broken for a while. The slide is broken which is a major bummer, and all the suit ringers are broken ): But we are in love with the swimming teachers here . The staff isn't all that great. I swim here and get lessons here too. The locker room isnt all that great, people could just walk into you changing, because there are only curtains as covers. The water doesn't smell that good. Since they change it only once a year, I'm a little to scared to get in sometimes. But the late night swim is nice. read more

Yes I am giving this beloved pool two stars... It's a shocker I know based on the rave reviews from other yelpers. Perhaps if I had a young child who only used the water slide, the lazy river or took swim lesson I also would have a glowing review. However I have two older girls; one in middle school and the other in third grade. For my girls this pool is a huge disappointment. It started when we came for public swim and found the pool bursting with Children ages 7 to 17. The pool was extremely packed and that would have been fine if safety rules were being followed. Also 95% of the swimmers were boys; these boys were very comfortable and aware that they were the dominate gender in the pool and took full advantage of it. There was extreme rough play including throwing younger boys into the deep end, wrestling on the pool side, fighting and even pulling down each other's pants down. The worst part was the life guards could nothing to control the chaos. After about thirty minutes we were forced to leave. To accommodate my girls the lifeguard suggest they attend the female only swim held on Sunday. We were happy until we came for Female only swim and found out after paying full price that girls are only allowed to use the lazy river/ slide side of the pool! When would my girls get to swim at this "five star" pool the answer is never. I was told from the administrative staff that due to the ethic demographic this pool allows girls to swim ( free of chaos and male nudity) during female swim but they are excluded from the actual swim side due to a city age limit designated specifically for women only swims???? So to sum it up if you have wee ones or boys you are safe at this pool. If you don't fit that bill hop in the car and drive on down to another pool. read more

I wanted to learn how to swim at the ripe old age of 33. I'm not athletic or in shape at all. After pricing personal lessons, searching for pools, & looking at schedules, I settled on RBCC. Price was great, pics were impressive, location was good. Spoke to Jackie, the coordinator, who listened to my concerns & matched me with with Dee. Dee is an angel!! She is patient, encouraging, & fun. In 3 lessons she has me, of all people, swimming! Added my mom & sister to my time & they are too! DEE IS AMAZING! The lap pool when it's adults only is great. The sauna is relaxing & I like the women's locker room. I can change or shower out in the open or go to a private stall. I can get blown dry by the dryers on the wall & even dry my swimsuit in the handy dryers they have. They didn't miss anything when they remodeled. It's clean & well cared for. Haven't experienced the family pool yet or the hot tub, so I can't comment on it, but I enjoy my time here. read more

Yelp readers should ignore any reviews of this pool that were submitted before September of 2013. The new pool and community center opened then. When plans were announced to tear the old facility down, a record amount of community members attended each planning meeting,contributing pages of good ideas. When the building finally closed down, we all waited for the demolition and rebuilding. However, nothing happened for a year! Some of us became discouraged, thinking that once again, Seattle was kicking the southend to the curb. But, believe it or not, it got built...and they did a damn good job on it. In fact, it's the best public pool in the city. Yes, as Benni says, it has some problems. My main complaint is that the showers are way too hot! But Meredith, I 'm pretty sure most public pools do not provide towels. And we are delighted that the locker rooms are crowded. It is so great to see all the families using and enjoying the pool! One last comment. The saturday morning water exercise class with Erin is so much fun that you 'll forget that you are working out. It's more like a party! read more

I brought my daughter here yesterday and she had a blast. The slide and the lazy river are a big hit. My only complaint is that the swim hours are very limited. It is such a great facility, why is the time so restricted? The hours aren't accurate on the website, only stating: Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday & Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. But when I called I found out that it is open for one hour in the morning (I forget when). Then again between 2:35-3:55 and one last time from 7-8 at night. We arrived at 2:35 and there was already a sign posted that the swim session had sold out. Luckily, after asking at the desk, we found out that there were 3 remaining tickets - just enough for the kids in our party and they were able to swim for just over an hour. Frankly, an hour and 20 minutes isn't that long, and certainly not long enough for our crew. They would have been happy to have, at least, another hour. In spite of the limited time, Rainier Beach Pool is a lot of fun! We would definitely go back. I recommend calling for their hours before you go. read more
