I stopped by here out of interest. Was craving some chicken curry at the time, & so happy to find this place because the food here is amazing, my personal favorite is the chicken curry , biryani and garlic naan. Amazing!!! The service is good as well. This will be my staple lunch spot with my grandma. Fast, reasonable, tasty. Kinda all that you want in a takeout joint. Doesn't need to be the best, and I wouldn't tell you that it is.

I ordered some chicken tikka masala (which came with rice) and one order of garlic naan from Grubhub. I give Raj Indian Cuisine a solid 3 for the following reasons: 1. While the curry hit the spot for my craving, it was nothing to write home about. 2. The rice was actually a bit dry and contained whole coriander seeds and was unseasoned (read: white rice, not yellow); I'm personally not enamored with this kind of rice. 3. The garlic naan... this was most disappointing. The garlic was not very strong and they smother the naan with some sort of yellow stain which seems to do very little flavor-wise. It was good to try, but as there's no dearth of Indian restaurants (and especially ones that deliver), my next Indian food adventure will lead me elsewhere. read more

I'm all for cross-cultural culinary enterprises to bring us all together, but I have to admit I was befuddled why an Indian restaurant was operating in an old-school Irish pub like the Kerry House. In fact, I wasn't even aware there was an Indian eatery under the deep green awning shared with the Kerry House until I got lost looking for Raj on Piedmont Avenue based on what I saw on the Yelp app. Jamie W. and I finally figured it out when we saw someone come out with a takeout order with a strong waft of curry. Sure enough, we found it, a relatively nondescript space with no dine-in customers. We decided to take a chance and reviewed the fairly robust menu with as much alacrity as we could muster. Guess we were hungry because we ordered a lot, at least for us. First, we went for the reasonably priced $9.50 Tandoori Chicken, which was a half-chicken that arrived sizzling and steaming on a cast-iron pan with onion and green peppers (photo: http://bit.ly/2I4iael). The breast was a bit dried out, but the leg and thigh were actually pretty good. We also ordered the $9.99 Bagan Bhartha where the eggplant came overly puréed as it was almost whipped in texture (photo: http://bit.ly/2Gf2X9M). This place has an old-school, not particularly inviting facade, but which gives it a bit of edgy mystery alongside its other Piedmont Ave neighbors. We got take-out which consisted of Chicken Makhani, Aaloo Tikki, Nan and rice. It also came with a chickpea dish, which may have been bundled with one of the other things or a mistake, regardless it was the best part. The rest was solidly so-so. Chicken Makhani kind of bland and lardy mouthfeel, the Aloo Tikki paddies were on the soggy and sad line, but to their defense I don't know how long they sat before being picked up. The dog managed to quickly eat the remainder of one when an unguarded opportunity arose, and seemed to have no complaints whatsoever. Anyway definite room for improvement based on a one-visit two-dish survey. read more

I didn't expect anything, just ordered Indian food. The Indian food I had there was the best I've had in 20 years. The tandory chicken was incredibly flavorful, savory, and tender and you must order their garlic Nam. Every penny worth.... The food is best in Bay Area. Never noticed this Indian restaurant growing up because I always thought it was part of the bar, Kerry House. We had some friends visiting who wanted Indian food, and Raj seemed like a popular place since it was crowded. The menu had good variety of traditional dishes, and my Indian friend approved, so you know it's legit! Why the low rating? Service did not come along with our meal. It took a long time to get someone to take our order, and when I did get their attention, I was waved off, as they seemed busy with catering to takeout orders. I did notice that they had a lot of deliveries, but that's not really a good reason to ignore patrons in the restaurant. I guess next time I'll stick with Doordash or Caviar for this place. read more

I really wanted to like this restaurant. The place is close to Kaiser, among many other stores, a CVS pharmacy, and banks. They offer a lunch menu with 8 choices (3-4 are for vegetarians), and all come with rice, tea, achar, nan, salad, raita, and fried vegetables. Customers can also choose from their regular menu. I am not an expert, but I have been to a few Indian and Pakistani restaurants, so my expectations were high. I can't say there was something that I particularly liked or found special, not even the tea or rice. Wanted an Indian fix on Christmas when my favorite spot (Biryani Kabob) was closed. Unfortunately this place was disappointing. The Onion Kulcha was super thick and the tikka masala was fine but the chicken was over cooked. Would have done two stars but I only had those two dishes. read more

This is my favorite Indian spot and I am happy it survived Covid. There were times when they struggled and were selective about the hours or times of day they were open. They have pulled through. Am picky about meat in general and I have to say ....it has amazing Tikka Masala and the chicken is actually not dried out like other places. Yummy! I'm no meat kebob expert but I could tell that this lamb wasn't up to standard. Walking into dimness, I was suddenly hit with curry clouds of aroma and greeted. The menus were posted outside. There's a lunch special, buffet for 8.99 and a extensive regular menu (mainly entrees). I ordered the lamb kebobs for 12.99 that came with a side of rice. My coworker had the chicken from the lunch special menu, that came with bread and salad for 6.99. The food came fairly quickly but it was actually hot compared to other reviews. BUT it wasn't in point. I expected it to be chewy and tender, not dry and almost grounded and falling to pieces. It was not delicious and the peppers and spices mostly sat on the skin of the lamb and not marinated into the meat itself. The rice was dry and loose, it tasted like nothing. My coworkers chicken was a lot better, wasn't dry and covered with sauce. It only came with 4 pieces of chicken, but the bread was absolutely delicious. Warm and lightly pan fried to perfection. While I was waiting, the staff seemed to be doing nothing at all and just talking amongst themselves. The interior was dark while playing traditional music in the back ground. It was clean and they had some really nice water glasses for drinking. The buffet table wasn't very appetizing to look at, let alone eat. Just seaming under some metal cover with 8 options. Mm. Trying out new types of food isn't exactly working out for me, but I'll keep giving it shots. As for Raj, the food is a little too dry and flavorless for me. I've been getting takeout from here for years. It's a sleeper spot - and it consistently has some of the most flavorful tikka and aloo gobi in Oakland. Veggie samosas shouldn't be left out of the conversation either. Don't let the digs put you off. This kitchen can cook. read more

We go to this place for the chicken makhani because it is the best version of that we have had in a very long time. We also get the lamb vindaloo and vegetable korma. The saag paneer is disappointing, but it does not matter because the chicken makhani is so good. The have lunch specials written on a board on the wall and monthly specials. The spice levels are always different, sometimes "hot" is perfect and sometimes it is incendiary. But that is part of the fun. We highly recommend. read more

They have no consideration for their customers safety! If I could I would rate it 0 stars. We went to Raj's on 3/31 for lunch and found an entire Nylon Glove, YES AN ENTIRE GLOVE in the Veggie Tandoori Wrap. My partner and I were physically sick. I saw as he bit into the wrap and the glove was exposed! With the pandemic Covid -19 you would think that restaurants would take extra precautions to keep their customers safe. We called the health inspector who stated they would talk to the owner and they would likely be able to fix the issue. Unfortunately during the Covid Pandemic Raj's Indian Cuisine failed to keep its customers safe. COCKROACH!!! Let me first say that I've ordered from Raj quite consistently in the past. They have a great chicken tikka masala that I've found to be some of the best in the east bay. Yesterday I had been craving the dish so naturally I felt obligated to order it. Exuberant, the food arrives. I grab some utensils, scoop some jasmine rice into a bowl, and out falls a dead cockroach. Safe to say I won't be ordering from here again. I would advise others to do the same. read more

Raj does a great consistent job executing solid dishes. This is part of our takeout rotation and the vindaloo, madras, and jalfrezi are all excellent. Prices have gone up (as has everything) but portions are generous and the samosas are stuffed brimming with potatoes and chickpeas. Turnaround is quick and efficient.
