Garlic naan, wasn't very good :(
    Michelle K.

I ordered some chicken tikka masala (which came with rice) and one order of garlic naan from Grubhub. I give Raj Indian Cuisine a solid 3 for the following reasons: 1. While the curry hit the spot for my craving, it was nothing to write home about. 2. The rice was actually a bit dry and contained whole coriander seeds and was unseasoned (read: white rice, not yellow); I'm personally not enamored with this kind of rice. 3. The garlic naan... this was most disappointing. The garlic was not very strong and they smother the naan with some sort of yellow stain which seems to do very little flavor-wise. It was good to try, but as there's no dearth of Indian restaurants (and especially ones that deliver), my next Indian food adventure will lead me elsewhere.

I'm all for cross-cultural culinary enterprises to bring us all together, but I have to admit I was befuddled why an Indian restaurant was operating in an old-school Irish pub like the Kerry House. In fact, I wasn't even aware there was an Indian eatery under the deep green awning shared with the Kerry House until I got lost looking for Raj on Piedmont Avenue based on what I saw on the Yelp app. Jamie W. and I finally figured it out when we saw someone come out with a takeout order with a strong waft of curry. Sure enough, we found it, a relatively nondescript space with no dine-in customers. We decided to take a chance and reviewed the fairly robust menu with as much alacrity as we could muster. Guess we were hungry because we ordered a lot, at least for us. First, we went for the reasonably priced $9.50 Tandoori Chicken, which was a half-chicken that arrived sizzling and steaming on a cast-iron pan with onion and green peppers (photo: http://bit.ly/2I4iael). The breast was a bit dried out, but the leg and thigh were actually pretty good. We also ordered the $9.99 Bagan Bhartha where the eggplant came overly puréed as it was almost whipped in texture (photo: http://bit.ly/2Gf2X9M). The $9.50 Bhindi Masala was better as we could make out the slices of okra with the onion and tomato, and it wasn't as mushy as some others I've had (photo: http://bit.ly/2uotyQt). There was actually a brightness to the texture that was appealing. A shared plate of basmati rice completed our meal (photo: http://bit.ly/2G8iRqr). There were no leprechauns nor pots o' gold around except when I had to go next door through the Kerry House to get to the restroom. That was a fast trip from Delhi to Dublin. FOOD - 3 stars...decent executions on favorite Indian dishes AMBIANCE - 2 stars...still the Kerry House, laddie, not the Taj Mahal SERVICE - 2.5 stars...quietly stealth TOTAL - 3 stars...it's a long way to Tipperary except from Raj

Never noticed this Indian restaurant growing up because I always thought it was part of the bar, Kerry House. We had some friends visiting who wanted Indian food, and Raj seemed like a popular place since it was crowded. The menu had good variety of traditional dishes, and my Indian friend approved, so you know it's legit! Why the low rating? Service did not come along with our meal. It took a long time to get someone to take our order, and when I did get their attention, I was waved off, as they seemed busy with catering to takeout orders. I did notice that they had a lot of deliveries, but that's not really a good reason to ignore patrons in the restaurant. I guess next time I'll stick with Doordash or Caviar for this place.

Chicken curry. You can choose how spicy you want your dish.

Fast, reasonable, tasty. Kinda all that you want in a takeout joint. Doesn't need to be the best, and I wouldn't tell you that it is.

Overall, would not recommend this place. I encountered very racist and bigoted treatment here…read more I placed an online order last night and went by for the pick up. When I approached the front counter, the lady present was very standoffish with me. I informed her of why I was there and she asked my name for the order. Upon giving her my name she then glared at me and literally asked me to recite my entire order lol! I showed her my online receipt in which she then insisted I still tell her my order. She brushed away my receipt and let another customer cut in front of me. Interestingly, the customer told her his name and she retrieved his order with no issue and was very friendly with him. To note, I was the only Black person present at that time. When I inquired as to why that customer wasn't asked to recite his entire order, she grinned and said that he's a "regular" and that I was "new." She went on to let a few other customers cut in front of me. I then asked for my money back in which she refused to return. Even when I asked for the manager, she said he was very busy. I made several requests for this resulting in her saying no and refusing to return my money. I then noted to her I'm calling the authorities in which I did. Furthermore, while servicing some of the other patrons, she would speak in another language with them while they looked at me and start laughing and staring me down. Eventually, the manager came out. He presented himself professionally and upon explaining what occurred he apologized and said it was unacceptable. He even offered me a drink with my meal and asked that I please accept the order instead and wanted to make things right. I took him at face value and said fine. While the situation was remedied, I definitely will not be returning to this restaurant. I researched some of the other reviews and came across several where other Black patrons have had similar racially motivated experiences here. That tells me there's a common practice of racism here. I refuse to support a business where this kind of behavior is tolerated. I have zero tolerance for bigots of any kind. Overall, the experience was a waste of my time and very dehumanizing. To hate someone you don't even know simply because of their skin pigmentation and ethnicity is irrational at best and bad for business especially in a place like Oakland where it's multicultural. My advice would be to not support this establishment. I especially advise any Black patrons not to come here as they clearly have issue with anyone who is simply Black, despite not knowing them as a person. Don't give your money, nor your valuable time, to hateful individuals who dehumanize others. All in all, this place gets a thumbs down.

I've been here a couple times (once for food, and once for drinks) and both times have been charmed by the friendly bartenders (shout out to Haya!) and the cheerful vibe. (Side note: My friends were really impressed with the flattering lighting in the bathrooms here. If you need an ego boost or a nice selfie, take a peek!) After drinks at Gold Palm, we went to their speakeasy, Moon Glow. Entry is through the left side of the bar, in what was formerly Fauna. It was a little too dark and narrow for my taste, but some people might like the small club vibe. Their drink, Clover Club, was my fave. I'm so glad the people of Bar Shiru revived this beautiful Uptown space. Will def come back!

I've always liked Kamdesh, sometimes during a busy lunch rush I've had to wait a little bit, but I felt like getting them a shot. I worked out a menu for a buffet lunch with different items and they delivered to my office in downtown. We had folks with dietary restrictions, and the person I talked to was able to walk me through some options. There were able to work within my price range per person and I could choose different items like kebabs, borani, etc. and they included cooked veggies, saffron rice and salad. It probably ended up being too much food but that's a good problem to have. Everyone enjoyed the meal, and we had leftovers in the fridge for a couple days.
