The food is delicious and the service is very good. It is in a tiny place and there is hardly room for 5 people, but we squeeze in. The portions are large - always more than I can eat, so I get another meal out of the already very reasonable price. We love that you can choose your spicy level, because our group varies wildly in that preference. I ordered the butter chicken (which came with rice), goat curry (entrée only), spinach samosas, and two orders of garlic naan. Everything arrived well-packaged and still warm. The butter chicken was ordered medium spicy, but honestly it didn't taste spicy at all. That said, it was still very flavorful. The sauce was rich, creamy, and smooth with tender pieces of chicken throughout. Even without much heat, the flavor was on point and very satisfying over the rice. The goat curry was excellent. Deep, savory flavor with a nice thickness to the sauce. The only thing to note is that there are quite a few bones, which is typical for goat but something to be aware of if you're not used to it. If you don't mind working around bones, it's absolutely worth it. The garlic naan was really good, and they were generous with the portions. Soft, slightly chewy, and perfect for scooping up both curries. Two orders ended up being more than enough. The spinach samosas came as two large pieces. Even though it's only two, they're big and filling. Crispy outside with a flavorful spinach filling inside. Overall, I ordered all of this just for myself and ended up getting four full meals out of it. Great value for the price and everything tasted fresh and well-made. Everything was a solid 5/5 in my opinion. My husband opted for the Goat Curry which he was absolutely excited about. According to him, it had good flavor, but he wasn't too keen on the jagged pieces of bones that he had to keep picking out which is the only downside because it's a pretty dangerous feat. Hidden gem of a restaurant in the Montclair neighborhood. They have a 20% off happy hour from 7-9pm which is perfect for picking up takeout after work. I would give this place 4.5 stars. I have gotten takeout several times, but never eaten there. The food was good and the lady who took the order on the phone very pleasant. A couple of things I would love to see improved on the menu: (1) Fewer items with cream in them. Seems like a lot of curry items have cream. (2) Better choice of items without potatoes in them, as literally every vegetable has potatoes as an ingredient. The other bread like dish I got was not the most impressive with the onions, was a bit bland. It was the same size of the naan but I almost wish it was smaller just because it was too bland to eat so much of it. The goat dish I got was tender and tasty! The real wild card was a pickled veggie dish because I love picked veggies but never got it from a spot like this before. Turns out it wasn't a good choice because the spices and sourness didn't click with me which is unusual for me. But like I said above, ordered a lot so bound to have some misses here. Excellent Indian/Nepalese cuisine! I had a craving for Indian food and came back to Himalayan Curry House as I have found they have the best Indian food in Oakland, if not the entire East Bay. I have tried several Indian establishments and this place always excels with hitting the mark with delicious food. I ordered, and had delivered, the following; Spinach Samosa Vegetable Pakora Chicken Tiki Masala (Medium) Lamb Curry (spicy) Tandoori Chicken (Medium) Dal Tadka (Spicy) Garlic Naan Kashmiri Naan Mango Lassi I can honestly say that everything was exceptional. Not one item fell short. The Samosa is huge and very fresh and tasty with just the right amount of crust. The Pakora (looks like a fritter) were delicious and not oily or greasy. Unfortunately the tamarind sauce for the Samosa and mint sauce for the Pakora were left out, but both were still tasty enough. Both the Tiki Masala and the Lamb Curry had incredibly tasty sauce with just the right blend of herbs and spices. The meats were cooked perfectly. One piece of lamb was a bit chewy, but not bothersome enough to take away from the overall dish and flavor. I am not a big fan of Dal but this one was absolutely wonderful. Not runny, but smooth with the right amount of tastiness to it. It all came with basmati rice with each main dish. with an option for brown rice if you prefer. The Tandoori Chicken was prepared and cooked to perfection, and the chicken was very tender. It came with green pepper slices, cabbage and lemon wedge. Delicious!! The Naan was just right and the Kashmiri rather unique. I never had that one before and it is savory/sweet with glazed cherries and coconut w/cashews. YUM. Not sure I would get it every time, but a treat to try. The Lassi was good, lots of yogurt, and a bit thicker than usual, yet still excellent. The mango flavor was perfect. The level of spiciness was not that pronounced or extreme. For me I found the 'medium' and 'spicy' levels to be moderate. If you really like very spicy food I suggest to opt for the 'extra spicy' level. I highly endorse this restaurant and can safely say that nearly everything from the extensive menu would be a stand out Ingredients are fresh and they really know how to prepare Indian food to perfection. I do admit, I am not a big fan of Indian/Nepalese, etc. cuisine. Something in their curries often doesn't sit right with me. But the husband loves it, so I am a good little wife and let him drag me along every now and then. By now I know which dishes don't upset my stomach too much. We went to Himalayan Curry House mainly because it's close and the Yelp star average is amazing! And the food really is great. I got the "medium" spicy version for whatever reason (stupid me!) and didn't taste too much after the first few forks full, but it was worth it. The place itself is not great. I mean it's a hole in the wall with a few sparse tables and chairs. I am sure they make their business with takeout. There were a few Uber drivers and other delivery guys going in and out while we ate, so there's that. Consequentially, the service was that of a hole in the wall. Slow, but friendly. And on the plus side: everything looks tidy and clean. We came pretty late, so the occasional garbage bag was hauled by our table while we ate, ah well... But the food itself is totally worth the 4 stars. You can even bring your vegan buddies, they have a good selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes as well. Portions are humongous. We ordered vegetable momos, tofu saag and naan. Momo's were piping hot and came with an awesome chutney/dipping sauce. The tofu saag was interesting - I've never had saag like it. I admit, it's been a while since I've dined in Montclair - but time seems to have stood still here. Nothing much has changed - it is still a charming and vibrant community - but has a laid-back, small town feel. We parked and strolled to Himalayan Curry House - a hole-in-the-wall setting with sparse tables and chairs - but looked tidy and clean. We dared ourselves to try ordering dishes with extra spice - and boy... we were sweating, and our nose runny after the second bite. Papadum: This thin, crisp, flatbread is typically based on a seasoned dough - usually made from peeled black gram flour, fried with dry heat. The very thin and crisp flatbread had a great texture to it - and wasn't oily at all. (5 of 5) Himalayan Biryani: Extra spicy. Yeow! The boneless chicken pieces were tender, and the prawns plump and juicy - but the meat was a tad dry. Overall, this was quite a delicious dish. This place is amazing! The flavors are so good! My favorite Indian place is in concord and I've been looking for somewhere in Oakland to replace it and this is it. Beware that if you say spicy it really is spicy. Also the first place that an entree actually does come with rice. Normally I forget to ask and end up with no rice :( so I really appreciate that it comes with. The Samosas are huge! Their mint sauce is very good but I recommend ordering extra because they don't give you enough. I also love that they were open two days after Christmas and on a Sunday! Super easy to pick up to go. I was standing in their doorway for a while then walked inside and was hanging out for a few more minutes before someone noticed me. I called and ordered my food ahead of time for pickup at 3pm and still had to wait. There might have been a misunderstanding but I was able to take my food home at 3:11 no biggie. It normally wouldn't bother me but there was no one else waiting there and it didn't seem like they were cooking anyone else's order. I ordered 2 orders of samosas (2pcs per order) and it came with a mint chutney type of sauce and a brown sweet and spicy (not hot but cinnamon type of spice) which I enjoyed with the samosas. I will say they were huge!! But the flavors were not deep. I ordered 3 orders of garlic naan (2pcs per order) I saw the garlic chunks and cilantro although the flavor was not very fragrant. Lastly I ordered the chicken tikki masala. The sauce was nice and thick which was a good sign for me, nice bright orange color and quite a few chicken chunks for my order. It came with basmati rice although I will say it just looked like white rice. The chicken was a little on the dry side, white or breast meat I presume and the sauce did not have much depth in flavor. I was not satisfied for my curry craving after this meal. I was pretty disappointed since I pass by here often. It's the aromas are what drew me in! Not many people dine in here, lots of to-go and delivery orders.. meaning there shouldn't be a problem getting a table for dinner! It's catered to small groups of less than 4 and there's about 6 tables. The menu was easy to navigate. We ordered the lamb tikka masala and butter chicken. Both were very rich and creamy, exactly how we like our curry! Unlike other reviewers our boneless chicken was super tender, not dry all! It came with a big bowl of basmati rice and we added an order of garlic naan for $2.99 came with 4 slices. Perfectly thin and crispy on the outside and just slightly fluffy on the inside. We also ordered the mango lassi for $2.99 which was good but slightly on the small side. Witnessed a gentleman order one to-go and they gave it to him in a small coffee cup which was even smaller than my for-here cup. Little but of a size discrepancy I hope they will fix.
