Raker reached out and talked me through a checkout process, and then discussed potential causes for what was going on with my washer. They were professional, timely, and customer service oriented. Mr. Raker diagnosed my issue over the phone. And was willing not to charge me anything for his diagnosis. However, my home warranty requires a in house diagnosis for repairs or replacement. Mr. Raker arrived at my home and spend 30 mins explaining the issue with my washer, called a friend to discuss pricing for a new drum insert, and advised again and in writing to buy a new washer. He then told me about the best washer to purchase from his experience in the appliance repair industry. I do not recommend. You have been warned - estimates are outrageous. I had to pay $120 for a diagnosis and Reid could not even pin-point the root cause of the problem withy my fridge. He said - it could be X or Y or Z or blah-blah. I knew it was X or Y or Z or blah-blah, based on my google search. I called Raker Appliance to look at my washer. Mr. Reid Raker came to my home, pulled the back touch panel off the washer, dropped a multi-meter on it, and determined it was bad and gave me a verbal quoted of $460 ($120 service fee / $340 part) to repair the machine. Fair enough, he was having the part shipped to my house, so I told him he did not have to come back and that I could just install it, but he insisted he had return and put it in. So, the part came in on a day my wife and I had to be onsite at work, so we asked my mother to come over to receive him at the houses and pay him. He came to the house, snapped the new panel in place and proceeded to charge my card $580, adding an additional $120 service fee to come back to the house to plug in the new part. When I called him on it, he said $460 was only an estimate, but I did not ask for an estimate I ask how much the total cost to fix unit would be. He finally admitted he may have "inadvertently" failed to tell me there would be an additional service fee for returning, but he still refused to return my $120. So, beware and get EVERYTHING in writing before you commit to any repairs, because verbal agreements mean nothing today, especially to those who hide behind mantras such as "superior honesty and professionalism" like Raker Appliance. read more

As others have noted, I'm in the same category of people who hate paying for repairmen, try to do things myself, and will only call for help when it's something above my paygrade. I had a cooktop where the electric starters went out. No big deal, we'll use a manual lighter. Had a soap dispenser that went out on the dishwasher. No big deal, just shut the door really fast. Then the wash machine would not drain. I tried everything I could find online, and then decided to break down and call Raker. John from Raker asked for all the model numbers of the appliances before he arrived so that he could get the necessary parts just in case he needed to to reduce the number of trips out. Smart move, kept costs low. He showed up in professional attire at a time that worked with my schedule. First he tackled the wash machine, and was able to show me pieces that even I couldn't get to. He tackled the dishwasher, noting I may need to buy a new door, which would be expensive. He offered me some suggestions of the best dishwashers on the market at the time just in case the cost to repair was too great. He was able to find just the soap dispenser instead of having to re-buy the entire door, and at an affordable price. Lastly was the cooktop. It took several trips out, but John was able to handle it. Even though he came out some 7 times (due to a series of bad components), he didn't charge me for each trip. In the end, it ran me $781 to fix three separate appliance, which included all the parts (which were more than 2/3 of the total). I would happily recommend Raker and John Herrell to anyone looking for friendly, knowledgable, affordable and effective appliance repair. So most regular people (like me) don't like dealing with things when they stop working. My 2 year old clothes washer started giving me an error message. After sifting through the manual, Googling and youtubing, I tried fixing the problem myself. Well, I didn't have the tools necessary and maybe could have finished the job myself. I went through the Whirlpool website and almost went through their authorized specialists. That was until I read reviews and quickly changed my mind. So, I researched more and came across Raker and another company. The other companies reviews were good, but I had a good feeling about Raker. Angie's list.. positive reviews etc. But, they didn't service downtown Baltimore. I sent them an email and left a message Sunday night. Monday mid-AM, I was called back by Steve (their downtown guy.. to my surprise) and we scheduled a convenient meeting time. My initial assessment was right, but Steve confirmed it, was thorough and pleasant to chat with as we waited for all diagnostic tests to be done. I don't have a frame of reference for what a fair rate is. But, if you want timely, friendly, competent service (in addition to letting a normal person into your home) call Raker's. They always say you need a good mechanic, doctor, dentist, repairman... these guys are good. I was pleasantly surprised. read more

Holy smokes. So, our washer stopped working this past Friday and, for a variety of reasons, we weren't able to do much of anything about it until today (Wednesday). Laundry was piling up. Anyway, I called and texted Reid at 1:30 this afternoon. It's now 3:30, and the washer is fixed, John the tech is gone, and it didn't cost a fortune. I was quoted about $80 for a service call which, as far as I know, is about the going rate--even on the cheap side--for an appliance service call. I got out for under $150 all together. Your mileage may vary, based on what you need done. Reid was terrific on the phone, willing to spend time discussing the problem. Based on what I was telling him, it was sounding like I was going to need a new washer, but he went back and researched it. Turns out, it was reparable, and I am so pleased with the service, cost, and the turnaround time. read more

100% Honest!! I can't say enough great things about Raker Appliance and Harry Raker. We had a problem with our washing machine. Mr. Raker spent time on the phone with my wife 2 days in a row suggesting things to try that would clear the error. When none of that worked, he came to our house the next day. He spent over an hour trying to fix the error code. The repair would have been several hundred dollars and the washing machine was already 10 years old. He suggested purchasing a new machine instead of spending money on repairs. I appreciate the honesty and kindness of Mr. Raker. Our dishwasher suddenly stopped working one night, a few days before a big weekend with house guests. I called Raker early the next morning, they got back to me promptly, came same day, and fixed the problem for a very reasonable price. Ryan was professional and friendly. Coincidentally, the glass on our oven door had spontaneously shattered the same night. We were trying to contact Kitchenaid about it, but I happened to mention it to Ryan, and he was able to call his supplier, find that they had the piece of glass in stock, and quote me a firm price for replacing it.
