David provided an excellent service to an incredibly complex front porch roof and gutter issue caused by a nest of squirrels living rent-free for decades. We bought a century-old rowhome in D.C. and didn't realize we also inherited a family of squirrels that ferociously dug into our front porch beam. We've gotten several quotes in the past two years where roofers and siding companies chalked it up as "this is going to cost you a lot of money and it's just not worth it." We finally decided to prioritize fixing this problem and got three quotes. I got two other quotes, and one was really expensive (due to different material cost) and the second one was comparatively the same. I trusted David's expertise because he was referred by my friend who highly recommended him (David fixed my friend's leaky roof issue nearby); and David didn't give me a run-around answer with the problem I had raised. When I finally decided to start on the project, David's team was ready to go. I wanted David to fix three big areas: 1) trimboard/beam; 2) gutter; and 3) front porch ceiling. David's team took photos throughout the process, identified that the front porch trim board didn't actually have a beam inside, so the squirrels lived in this hollow space filled with mulch and tree branches. They quickly gave me an estimate of the additional cost to add a beam and worked extremely hard to fixing the front porch roof area. They were done within a day and a half. I'm super pleased with David's craftsmanship. David went above and beyond my expectations, fixing a beautiful antique crown moulding that the squirrels chewed up, and making it look like new. I used Yelp to find someone to clean my gutters. Yelp sent me 5 contractors. 4 responded very quickly, but only 2 gave me a price quote on the spot. I went with David because he was willing to come the same day and get it done. He showed up early and got to work. Very fast and efficient and fixed one gutter that was separating from the roof. All in he charges $180 which I think is reasonable. The other quote was $150 but I would have to wait and there were some conditions that would have probably driven the price up. David was one of several 5* contractors whom we asked to inspect our roof following a leak we spotted after heavy rain recently. He got the job for three main reasons: - First of all, he did the most thorough inspection (spending an hour crawling around our tiny attic and roof, where access is complicated by solar panels) spotting real issues many other contractors had missed (I was up there with him, so I saw them first hand). Did I mention he came on Thanksgiving, a day after we called him? Well, now I did ;-) - He also offered a competitive quote for repairs and gutter replacement and, in contrast to some of the competition, he wasn't only interested in replacing the whole roof, but thought we could fix the issues and keep it alive for another 5-8 years (which sounded very reasonable to us). - Finally, he was ready to start on short notice and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. While the weather wasn't exactly ideal (it was cold and rainy), David delivered on his promises, working tirelessly (and occasionally after dark and in the rain) to fix the issues as soon as possible. Less than a week after we spotted the leak, and after three+ long days of labor, we have new gutters and a roof that is almost unrecognizable. And while several of the contractors wouldn't touch our roof with the solar panels on it, David did a lot of the work crawling under them, saving us $2,5k in dismantling and reassembly costs alone... He also provided photo documentation of the work done, with helpful "before" and "after" pics. Would we hire David for another job? Absolutely, and we actually already have, i.e., he's scheduled to come round and inspect our roof on a semi-annual basis now. The company's owner was very receptive to my immediate need for fascia replacement. I was surprised that morning to see that a huge piece of lumber and fascia boar hanging down exposing a portion of the underside of my roof. He replied quickly, asked me to text a picture --then providing me with an estimate. I pleased when he was able to fit me in that same evening. Really happy I found a responsive and reliable roofer at last! Right after we moved into our old house it developed a small leak. I spent weeks contacting various companies and it was like pulling teeth to get someone to come take a look, let alone give us a bid to fix the problem. We eventually got a few bids but they were crazy high and some even proposed replacing an entire section of the tile roof with shingles which seemed like extreme overkill. Then a friend from our neighborhood list serv reccomended David. He came out within a few days, diagnosed and explained the problem, and then fixed it a few days later. Wow! And the fix was not a simple patch job, either - the entire metal "valley" between too parts of the roof had deteriorated after years of the prior owner putting a series of "bandaids" over it. I cannot recommend David Ralda enough. Just before Christmas around 2 inches of snow fell in DC and as it melted it started coming through the roof into the bathroom. As if having the roof start leaking wasn't stressful enough this happened less than two weeks out from the due date of our first baby! We gathered a number of quotes, for what we quickly realized wouldn't be a quick fix, and David came within 24h of my reaching out to him. His quote was very competitive and he was able to do all the work we wanted. Other companies either wouldn't take on the work or wanted astronomical sums for doing it. We had a great dialogue about what work was needed and not needed and he was very willing to work out the things I wanted. This was not a simple roof replacement. We live in a 1905 DC row house and the leaking was caused by an old issue where one of the main beams supporting the roof had broken under extensive weight, leading to a sagging roof and collecting water. The previous attempted repair had not been sufficient to stop the pooling water and this has led to the underlying roof damage. We asked David to strip off the old heavy roof layers, completely replace the broken beam and any rotten rafters and roof deck and lay a new roof. We also had him sister one of the other beams, which had developed small cracks. In addition we had him add a new hatch to provide roof access and a new skylight. All throughout he was very accommodating at quoting for each part of the job separately so we could decide what we would do. They used a torch down roof material, which we were confident was the best choice for the flat roof of the row house given research we did. We found that many other companies tried to convince us that stick down roof is better but we felt that that was simply in their interest as it makes the job simpler and keeps insurance costs down. In order to replace the beams the roof itself had to be lifted enough to pass the new beam underneath, making it a challenging job. David and his team completed all all this work within two and a half days, working from 8am until long after dark. In between days of work they carefully protected the exposed roof and we never saw a drop of water come in, despite heavy rainfall on one of the off days. David had the entire outside of the house professionally cleared afterwards and it's as if they were never here. An unknown when replacing a roof is how much of the underlying roof deck will need to be replaced, something not possible to completely know before the old roof comes off. With a 115 year old house this will inevitably push the cost up a bit during the job. Some companies will replace any rotten wood as part of the cost, which is not the case with Ralda (I suspect other companies just include it in the quote anyway though). David was very communicative about cost increases and these wound up being very minimal. David was extremely communicative and professional and extremely patient with me as I navigated having our roof replaced the same week we bought a newborn home from the hospital. Would use again and recommend strongly to anyone looking to get roof work done. read more
