I get my hair braided in Harlem every summer. I usually go to Aminata's on St Nicholas, but have tried many spots in Harlem. So when I saw an ad for $170 any style any size braids at Rama's, I decided to give their new location a shot. I showed up around 10am, no appt. They were pretty packed, but it's a huge place so it didn't feel like it. Pros-I really liked the cleanliness, the effort at a salon vibe, and the "shop" they have in front, a cute unique touch. I like that there are individual stations that feel like stations. I wasn't seated randomly in a corner or in a middle of the floor like I have at some other places. I also liked that there was a designated English speaker who ran the desk. She wasn't braiding hair and talking prices to me, like at some places. As for my hair-the 2 ladies on my head were pleasant. One worked on the back, and the other on the two front sides. I went in for small knotless braids. I blow dried my natural hair and they went to work. CONS: Unfortunately, I think they were both newer braiders or something. I don't usually need to do anything more than a quick scan in the mirror before paying, tipping, and leaving, so that's what I did, and I THOUGHT my hair looked consistent with what I usually get with knotless (they always make the braids or parts bigger than you ask for, but it's expected). So when my bf sees my hair at home, I wasn't expecting him to ask if they're supposed to be different sizes! I went to inspect them, and he was right. I was suddenly sorely disappointed. My braids ARE different sizes- specifically, the two front sides are different sizes. One side is small, and matches what was going on in the back. But the other side- maybe she got tired and started rushing, but it's definitely mediums. Then- the poor girl in the back- she started off small, but she did some super lumpy braids back there. I guess for the discount price, you get discount quality. I believed the hype. The hype didn't deliver for me. I think maybe because everyone is getting the goddess braids now, it's easy to disguise inconsistent sizing, so braiders are maybe getting lazy, and they think the same strategy will fly with every style. PSA: It won't. If you try that with the right sis, you're gonna have a problem in your salon. Ughhh I should've gone elsewhere. Lesson learned. You girlies can have the discount braids, I'm going to pay the extra $30 for consistent sizing at least.

Rama braiding salon is a good, bad and plenty of ugly conditions type of place. Pro's- It's open 24/7, prices aren't bad and walk-ins are accepted. MAJOR Con's- Rama salon is FILTHY! Being serviced here is like getting your hair braided at the city dump. Braiding hair of all colors and textures is just everywhere. It's all over the floors and the chairs. It sticks to your clothes and your shoes. I even offered to sweep during my short wait until it was my turn to be seen. My offer was denied. The worker's customer service skills are on ZERO and it ain't just about a language barrier. They are unkind and stared at my 4C type hair and passed me around until someone decided that they could handle my naps. It was the trauma of Dominican salons all over again and they were definitely talking s*** about me in different languages. They don't wipe down chairs between customers either. Overall, Rama has the fastest braiders in town. They can do styles that take 6 and 8 hours, in less than half the time. Two sets of hands braided my hair and they were done in under two hours. Come with cash. You'll be told over the phone that Zelle and Apple PAY are accepted. They'll tell you at the end, "Zelle not working today" and then point you to the in-house ATM machine. I really hated my Rama experience but I'll definitely be going back. I won't have anything to drink so I won't to need to use their cruddy bathroom but I'll be going back for sure.

1st time going there. Walked in at 9 am didn't start braiding my hair til a little after 10am ( I had to wait for my stylist to blend my hair I guess smh‍ )I didn't finish til 3:30pm. Y'all it was 180 for them to still NOT give me the style I asked for. No knotted or sealed ends on my braids or hair to match the goddess style. COME WITH YOUR HAIR (for any style other than regular braids) OR BE PREPARED TO WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. Only good For LAST MINUTE appointments. If you looking for NEAT Braids AND ENDS GO elsewhere. The messy ends are an automatic NO NO for braids of any type unless that's the aesthetic. EVERYTHING else was IMPECCABLE like PERFECT GRIP when braiding and CLEAN PARTS. But heavy handed on the gel. My scalp is still itching from the excess. I only tipped because only one person did the my scalp and two other stylists assisted WITH THE INCOMPLETE ENDS .

This is the mess I received!

I drove 4 hrs to get to Rama's in Harlem and it took 8+ hours to finish my hair..I guess they only post videos of satisfied customers because my experience was nothing like what I saw on TicTok! I wanted small knot less boho braids down to my butt. I had my own curly hair. 1. Any length any size for $180...the maximum length for that price is down to the top of your butt..anything longer is extra...that's fine...HOWEVER..I asked for braids to my butt...they gave me braids to my shoulder and left the unbraided ends out and because the unbraided ends reached my butt..they consider that the length... 2. They ask for a picture of what you want...when she finished, my hair was no where close to the picture...huge messy parts..twisted braids..sloppy work.. 3. Don't bother with correcting them...they get an attitude and make you feel as if you're the problem! 4. I had one braided the entire time...no one came to help her...I sat for 8+ painful hours! 5. Bring your own comb...part of the long 8+ hours, was that my braider had to share a comb with the braider next to her!! 6. Definitely recommend checking their work in between the process...I have huge messy squares (I wouldn't exactly consider this mess as a square) all different sizes and the parts looks like she just grabbed some hair and threw it in a braid.. THEY DO NOT REFUND YOUR MONEY...SO PLEASE...IF YOU SEE YOU'RE NOT GETTING WHAT YOU ASK FOR, IMMEDIATELY SAY SOMETHING AND/OR LEAVE...THEY WILL GIVE YOU AN ATTITUDE...BUT I WILL TAKE ATTITUDE OVER LOOSING $$$$

I travel more than an hour anytime I want braids just so I can get it done at Rama's. Compared to braiding salons, especially in other boroughs, Rama has the best prices. She has stylists that can do any and everything. I've seen the ladies in the shop do styles ranging from your basic twists to knotless braids and goddess locks. My suggestion would be to come EARLY on a weekday. So call out of work if you must. While some stylists are better than others, everyone does great work. I usually go to Yasmin. Her work is neat everytime. In my last visit I got medium sized braids in a triangle part down to my waist and it took about 4.5 hours. She works pretty fast and I always love the final look.

I paid $480 for my appointment and left with hair that looked patchy and not like what we had discussed. While disappointing results can sometimes happen, what bothered me most was the complete lack of communication afterward. I reached out to Masaki on May 13 regarding my concerns and attempted to resolve the issue privately. I never received a response. It has now been about a month, and despite giving plenty of time for a reply, I have been ignored. I did not immediately leave reviews or make public comments because I wanted to give him the opportunity to address the situation directly. Unfortunately, that opportunity was never taken. For $480, I expected a higher standard of work and customer service. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Masaki.

Updating my review: I used to come here because the haircuts were strong, but over time the…read moreexperience deteriorated significantly. Appointments became rushed, started late, and lacked even basic professionalism. You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. Updating this with a pic and additional NYC HAIR SALON SEO terms so future customers are warned since the salon has decided to block me after no satisfactory resolution. The pic at the top right was me pre-hair f*** up. Only come to this salon if you'd like to come home and cry.

I went back recently to bleach my hair and I was so shocked by how good it came out - and in only 4-5 hours! He's definitely a professional and knows what he's doing especially when it comes to dying/bleach/toning and cutting short Asian hair to fit my face shape. I rarely need to tell him to fix or that I'm not satisfied with my hair; I trust his process and he's never failed me.

I asked for ash brown (which I usually get) but I got a way lighter color than expected and the bleach (he went over the bleach twice) really damaged my hair. On top of that, they charged me for a haircut I never asked for. During the balayage, the stylist cut/thinned (no idea what he did because he never asked me) some of my hair (maybe 10 "snips"?) and they later charged me an additional $70 for the "haircut." This really pissed me off because in the middle of my appointment, I even heard an assistant ask in Mandarin "is she getting a haircut?" and the stylist shook his head. I was really unhappy with my hair that I went to get a hair treatment (for the dry, damaged hair) and toner at a different salon a week later. That stylist even asked "who did your hair?"

I guess she didn't style it? But anyways, if you're just looking for a basic cut make sure to communicate that so you don't accidentally double the cost of your haircut.
