The Taco Bell of Ramen! This place uses the microwave ramen noodles to make their food. On top of that the meat was disgusting and tasted like plastic. Way, way overhyped. I was beyond excited for Indy's first proper Ramen Shop. We showed up at 4:45pm on a Saturday (shop opens at 5), and we were 15th in line. Despite only having 3 options on the menu, it took us about 10 minutes of waiting inside before we gave our orders. Something that struck me as odd was that there were no descriptions on the 3 options.... just 3 words in an Asian language. When I got to the front to order, I of course said "hi, can you please explain the differences.' What I wanted to say was 'aren't you sick and tired of people asking what the differences are?' The food itself was very average. Having eaten Ramen in cities such as San Francisco and NYC..... Ramen Ray paled in comparison. For $13, I'd expect more than 1 flimsy piece of pork belly and half an egg. I finished my entire bowl (so did the other 3 in my group) and we all left a bit hungry. Tip.... don't go there hungry. The food was also very salty. Aside from the line and the food..... the restaurant has very little ambiance. The inside reminds me of an old Wendy's. There was also a line THE ENTIRE TIME..... which meant the door to the restaurant remained open the whole time. It got cold. So much for a ligit Ramen shop in Indy. I wish loud noodle slurping was encouraged here like it is in Japan. I surely would have done some slurping at Ramen Ray! The Spicy Miso is where it's at! This was a huge bowl of thick brothy FLAVA taking me back to my time in Japan last summer. The portion size was large filled to the brim with corn, onion, egg, bean sprouts and chashu pork -- large enough that I couldn't eat the whole bowl and this girl likes to eat! No complaints there. The pork was cut rather thick (I'm used to chashu cut really thin) that might have been why it was a bit tough but it had great flavor. That broth though....delicious.... the broth for me wasn't spicy (as in mouth on fire spice) it was a nice combination of flavors (guessing spicy chili paste/chili oil and pepper were added). Combo those seasonings with the other goodies on top and you have a bowl of warm comfort. Note: I probably wouldn't recommend the spicy option for someone who isn't into spice. I loved the communal style setting which was typical to what we experienced at ramen shops in Japan. I also enjoyed the barely tea that was offered complimentary with our meal. It had a unique flavor. Several styles of beer were available in addition to matcha tea dessert cups which I didn't try but looked delicious. There are a few younger employees who seems to be a bit more knowledgeable and helpful about the menu items here but when asking the managers/owners about the dishes, they're unable to really tell you how any of them are different when it comes to flavor. Too pricey for what you get and pork is the only meat they have there I chewy pork. If you enjoy the business you're in, you should be able to sell your products well. I wont be returning. read more

I would give Ramen Ray 4+ stars for the taste of the soup for spicy miso ramen (my favorite) and the noodles. The taste is to crave for, especially for cold winter days. Unfortunately, the customer service is not so good and deteriorating. No smile, no thank you, no help, no service but tipping is expected. I hope the owner would pay more attention to the staff and train them for providing a better customer experience. As for the price, it is quite pricey for a full bowl of ramen. Half size is about $7-8.50 but it is small and you only get 1/2 of soft boiled egg and 1 piece of thin sliced chasu pork. The portion is never consistent. The staff was kind and friendly. It was just a little bit long waiting time to be served, but I understand that the restaurant was busy. I ordered a miso ramen with extra bean sprouts. It did not look like extra, so I asked the server if I got an extra. I was told yes, so I guess it was extra... the soup had a chunk of miso which was not dissolved in the soup base. The soup temperature was a little low. The noodle was a little over cooked and lost the good texture. The taste was very good. I gave a 4 star because the noodle was just a bit over cooked and the soup was not hot. I will though, go back hoping that the bowl will be hot. read more

Recently stopped in with a friend to try this place. Both of us ordered the miso ramen, and I got some mango cream bottled drink while my friend got some sort of special-flavored tea. My meal was good. The meat was really fatty, and appeared to be intended more for flavoring than for consumption, which was expected. The broth and noodles were really good, and a good temperature. Portion sizes were large, and I liked that there were plenty of noodles. Atmosphere and decor were also good. However, at over $18/person for what amounts to a bowl of noodles and a canned non-alcoholic beverage at an "order and pay at the counter" type of casual restaurant, it seemed a bit steep. Probably not a good idea to also expect customers to tip on top of that (e.g., by putting a "tip" line on the credit card receipt with "suggested tip" amounts ranging from 15%-20% and, if I recall correctly, a tip jar on the counter). read more

Ramen Ray is one of my favorite places in town, I drive at least 40 minutes to eat here every time I'm home in Indy. The spicy miso is my favorite - and the quantities are insane! I personally recommend trying the half size portions if you've never been here before. It's a little pricey but I still always add extra eggs to my ramen. The gyoza is great as well, and I love that they have Asian bottled drinks as well. I would say the only criticism I have is that they don't have many meat options besides pork or no meat at all. I would like to see chicken added to the menu! Other than that, this place is amazing. Can't wait to be back next time I'm in town. We need more ramen places like this in Indy! read more

Just like everyone else, I was so stoked for a legit ramen shop in Indy! Finally got there today and we arrived about 12:45. I read reviews previously so we knew there would be a wait. Didn't take long to order food but sadly there were no add ons today so I couldn't get mine spicy. It did take a solid 30 minutes for our food to be made but that was expected. I ordered the miso ramen and it was very flavorful, with a rich broth and lots of noodles. The piece of pork I got was a bit fatty for my preference but lent a nice flavor to the ramen. The egg was perfectly soft and next time I will add an extra one. The only thing missing was a little kick so hoping when I return they will have add ons again! Also a tip for those going. PLEASE pay attention to who was in the restaurant before you so that you don't take a seat that opens up in front of people who were waiting long before you. I did have to nicely tell someone they were jumping ahead of two other customers, plus myself and my friend. Thankfully they were apologetic and it wasn't a big deal. But I saw others trying to swipe seats who had just arrived. Hopefully once it dies down (if it ever does) this won't be an issue. It's too bad they can't figure out some sort of queue for the tables, but the space is so small I doubt there would be room. I went here for the first time, and I got potstickers and a small ramen noodle bowl. Their portions are huge. I would definitely suggest splitting with a friend. I thought that the food was pretty good. They don't have a huge menu, so you definitely have to be craving ramen if you go there. You order at the counter. Service was quick. The long awaited opening of Ramen Ray has come and I couldn't be more thrilled. I'm excited to watch them grow (maybe a location on the south side, hint-hint) and perfect their craft. Yes, it's a small Restaraunt, but I feel space is utilized well and it's comfortable. Yes, it's a little bit more costly, but you can taste the quality and freshness of the ingredients. I had the shoyu ramen and the broth was spot on. Great depth of flavor. It was, honestly, some of the best broth I've had-second only to a tiny ramen shop tucked away in an ally in Machida, Japan. The chashu pork was also a highlight, it quite literally melted off of my chopsticks. So go! Go with an open mind and some patience and you won't be disappointed! Let's keep this short and simple. Ramen was fabulous. And found in Indianapolis too! I've never had ramen in Japan, so I can't vouch that this tastes like its straight from Hokkaido, but I could imagine it's pretty damn close. I would hope so, too, because this ramen is a pretty penny at $12-$14 a pop. ~13x more expensive than that stuff you subsist off of in college. The broth is rich, bursting with flavor but a little too salty for my taste. Noodles are chewy and taste freshly made but haven't checked. I would also encourage anyone to take advantage of the lunch special, which I believe they run on weekdays, where a healthy portion of ramen, a small serving of rice, and 2 fried dumplings are under $10. Insane. Why a 4 star rating - after these rave reviews? The mini cakes. Are. $7. I repeat, SEVEN DOLLARS. It's the size of my palm, the height of my fingers, and 7 dollars. Don't get me wrong - it was good, but it was not $7 good. I feel a little robbed but let it slide because of the discounted lunch special. I believe this is the first ramen restaurant in Indy and boy am I glad it's here. Ramen!!! So, after reading the other reviews, I knew I had to try this place out. I'm from Texas, where there are a number of ramen-dedicated restaurants - tried some in Austin and in Houston. With that said, I have to say, Ramen Ray definitely ranks pretty high in serving up a pretty tasty bowl of ramen noodles. I understand that the noodles are actually imported from Japan...I mean how much more authentic can you get? So, I know some people had problems with waiting in line and for their ramen, but we didn't have to wait very long at all for our food, maybe 8-10 minutes or so? They have awesome barley tea that's complimentary with your meal and it's nice to sip on it while waiting for your ramen. I dunno, but I am a huge fan of barley tea...it reminds me of my childhood summers. They say smell brings back the strongest memories, but being that I love to eat...perhaps taste is what brings back my strongest memories. But then again, taste and smell kind of go hand-in-hand... Anyways, back to my review: so then, you wait a bit for the food and they call your number and you pick up your bowl of ramen...all of the sudden, it's like the answers of the universe have been made known to you. I was really hungry, but even still, the broth (I had the miso ramen) was so good and the noodles were just the right consistency. The pork was tender and I basically love anything that has corn in it. A+ for taste. The service was on the mark too. The guy who took our order was never twiddling his thumbs. When he wasn't taking orders, he was cleaning up tables and asking patrons how everything was. When he stopped at our table, he told us that they were working on allowing add-ons to the menu, and that they were working on expediting the process of putting orders together to better serve customers more efficiently. He also explained that they don't allow for take-out because it compromises the quality of the ramen? I assume he means that carry-out ramen doesn't taste the same - but I'm no expert. Either way, the place hasn't even been open for very long and I have a feeling like it's only going to get better since they're eagerly looking for feedback on ways they can improve. A+ for service. The last concern I had was how much a bowl of noodles costs. Yes, $14 is a bit steep, but at the end of the day, it's not much more than other ramen noodle joints that I've visited and in my personal opinion, I'd rather pay more for quality food, but that's just me. I have to give this restaurant a low rating not due to the food - which was delicious - but because of some of the other decisions they have made which make eating here rather impossible for our family. We live very close to Ramen Ray's and have been excited for it to open. We went last week to get carry out for my husband and I (we are a family of four with two small children). Well, carry out is not an option which was beyond disappointing and staying was not an option because there were no food choices for our children. Also, though good it was overpriced for what are at the end of the day small bowls of ramen (the cashiers will tell you how large they are, clearly the cashiers have never been to ramen restaurants in other cities - this was by far the smallest I have ever had and cost more than I paid in both NYC and San Francisco). At the end of the day the owner was very nice about explaining no carry out, but one of his staff was exceptionally rude. I do want to be able to enjoy this food, but they sure aren't making it easy for a busy working family on a budget. read more

Despite the price for the amount, which many may consider expensive for ramen, or the very short amount of choices on the menu, this place has what you need for what you're there for. Would I go back? I've already been trying to find the time to, being a busy man, living in downtown. I've been several times and have found the food to be outstanding. Does it lack ambiance? Well, yes, but it's in an old Taco Bell a block off Binford. I am not sure what people are expecting. They have three basic options and a few upgrades available. Spicy Miso is my favorite by far. Drink selections are somewhat limited, but they have a few good canned/bottled beverages available. I have not tried the dessert. I don't understand the people who say Ramen Ray is overpriced. It's $15 for a huge dish of delicious, authentic food. It's $10 for three tacos at Qdoba... Ramen Ray is definitely not expensive at $15. If you take a Ramen Ray at face value, they deliver a great meal at a reasonable price. They're doing what they do very well. Come hungry. Let me start by saying that I have been over to Asia a few times and had great ramen/la mian many times prob one of the best foods in the world in my humble opinion. So let's begin talking noodle soup..... Ordered the shoyu .After the first slurp I knew something was a little off about the noodles. Kept on eating away and enjoyed the pork and the egg, broth is a little too salty and has no depth to it making me believe it is probably from a canned stock. Finished my bowl and went to ask a staff remember where the noodles are from. She said Sapporo Japan like it was supposed to be impressive that the noodles are imported from Japan. I said ahhh ya that's what I thought. They were a little too firm to begin with, which is the only thing that matters about a ramen noodle, more of a halfway spaghetti texture. Ramen translates to pulled noodle not imported from Japan after being machine made. Anyway to conclude for $13 a bowl I was expecting noodles made in house and a broth with a little more flavor. Wasn't sure what to expect when walking into a ramen restaurant! The only ramen I had ever had was the dollar packers from Walmart, and I was in for a treat! I ordered the "spicy miso" opting out of the egg that comes with it. It came as a bowl full of noodles, broth, onions, corn (surprising but nice touch), pork strips, and other assorted veggies. Really good, authentic Ramen! The broth taste very good and you can tell it has been done right. Egg was perfectly soft boiled and the pork was very tender. Fall apart kind of tender. Noodles were very good as well. Some tips for people who haven't been yet. If you want take out just bring your own container, as I did. Order then take it to a table and pour it into your container. You can order extra noodles right now, but not extra pork yet since it is in such demand. Also, they are usually closed from 2pm till 5pm. Doors are usually unlocked though so you can step in and look at the menu and ask any questions. I had the Miso ramen which is 13.50 and I added extra noodle. Total came out to 17.99. Sounds expensive, but they are giving you a lot of Ramen! The bowls are very big. read more

I have been eagerly awaiting the opening of Ramen Rays since the article in the Star last August promising me genuine Japanese ramen. Five months late, but very good. I went with two co-workers two of us got the Shoyu (soy) ramen and the third got the Miso ramen. The soft boiled egg was perfectly cooked and the pork and Ramen was delicious. The broth had a depth and complexity that rivals the best Pho. We all agreed the food was very good. They are clearly doing a soft launch, not announcing they are open, but simply unlocking the doors and letting word of mouth do their work. It worked today because there was a line the entire time we were there and the kitchen is clearly still working through some bumps as it took about 6 minutes between orders for the next order to come out, which meant that We waited about 30 minutes for our food to start arriving and I was nearly done before the third member of my party was served. I hope they are working out the kinks and will have the food flowing better soon. Finally the price was (for me) a little high for lunch. I got a bowl of Ramen for lunch and my bill was $14.17. I was happy to pay it because I've been looking forward to this for a long time, and $14 isn't too much for a delicious meal, but it is more than I budget for lunch so it will be difficult to choose to go here on a lunch break. read more

After hearing all the hype I decided to try. $30 later We felt hungry and felt we did not get a fair or good deal in what we received. 3 small/thin slices of pieces of pork served over ramen noodles plus a little bit is sprouts, corn, etc... the broth tasted good not too salty, the noodles where a lot better than what you get for 39 cents at the grocery and what we lived on in college.
