    Asada Fries
    Jason R.

I was sitting in my living room browsing random places on Yelp and I came across this recommended place. I drive by this place every day, but being fairly new to this part of town I've not heard anyone talk about it. It doesn't seem to be that crowded. So, I kept browsing. A few minutes later I had images of Asada Fries showing up in my news feed. After asking someone about this place they told me that an order of Asada Fries from here will feed 2 to 3 people. I laughed and thought to myself, (You haven't seen how much I can eat). I left the comfort of my recliner to venture a mile down the road to Rancheros for an order of Asada Fries. I found the workers to be really friendly. The place is cleaner on the inside than you'd guess from the outside. I got my order to go so I could take them back to my recliner. When I opened them up on my kitchen table to pour on the sauce and get my drink ready for my recliner meal I started getting excited about this large feast in front me. It was a huge box of seasoned fries smothered in guacamole, sour cream, cheese and loaded with asada. In that same second, I remembered that school is out. That means my boys are in their rooms playing their games...hmmm will they smell it? Feeling guilty about hoarding them all for myself I called my two teenage boys out of their rooms to come try them. You know how this story ends. I got a little bit, they got a lot. Gotta admit there was no way I could have eaten all that by myself. For $10 and some change it's great fast food for a great deal. We will all be going back here to check out their other menu items.

Quesco dip with added onions by me.

Eat here every week. Closest thing to California taco shops. Love the food, love the owners.

I also got the taco flight, while my husband ordered the quesabirria tacos....everything was fantastic. We started with the guacamole, which was made table side right in front of us, and it was hands down the BEST guacamole I've ever had! My daughter loved the salsa, and the dessert flight was the perfect sweet ending to an amazing meal. The service was outstanding, the atmosphere was incredible, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. I will definitely be back! This is officially my new favorite Mexican restaurant in Kansas City and, in my opinion, the best Mexican food in town.

There was a wait of about 20 min-- not bad. I was excited that the food would be fresh! The music was quite loud, but I suppose that's to be expected of any place on a weekend night. When we sat down, we were given chips and salsa. When we asked for hot salsa, it was an extra charge. Even though most Mexican places provide a spicy version at no charge, we went ahead and decided to try it. I wouldn't recommend it. The flavor was almost bitter, and it didn't seem fresh. I ordered the quesadilla with shredded chicken, and it arrived sopping wet. The tortilla on the bottom was soggy, and I ended up having to heat it with a fork and knife. There was barely any cheese. The side of beans lacked in flavor. The only highlight of the dinner was their queso. However, at $8 for their smallest portion, I felt like it would have been easier to just buy Gordo's queso from the store and eat it at home. To top it off, I felt like the restaurant was dirty. If you look closely at the chairs, walls near the tables, under the tables, and in corners, it feels like the surfaces haven't been cleaned properly. If I were to recommend some place else in the area that's comparable in terms of type of food and ambiance, I'd recommend Palacio Maya in Independence (not the one in the Northland).

The Atmosphere - There is a some personality here! This location has some Southwestern motifs and…read moreit looks like a Mexican restaurant (at least one in the Midwest) is supposed to look like. Inside it is very functional yet still has padded booths, a nicely tiled bar with lots of light effects and a more comfortable atmosphere to dine in. This place does a lot to exhibit that they want customers to come in and dine and stay for a few drinks. Only downside... It was freezing! The two tables near me continually talked about how cold it was and I didn't even take off my sport coat to eat because it was cold inside. Now to be fair it is spring as I write this and no one has their settings for A/C or Heat set correctly yet. But, for now... 3 stars The Staff - I didn't see much staff, but, it was lunchtime so maybe there weren't that many working yet. The gal that showed me to my table was very nice. And the one who took my order was quick and efficient but that was the only time I saw her. A cook from the kitchen brought me the hot plate of food. And the gal that seated me is the one that checked to see if I needed anything else and brought me the check. Polite and Nice... not necessarily friendly. 3 Stars The Food - I ordered one of the lunch plates. The burrito and a taco with refried beans. Both the burrito and the taco were ground beef. Their flavor was good. I felt that the meal lacked a little pizzazz but was generally tasty. Chips and salsa were also included and while both were good... they were just good. Solid 4 stars for the food. Overall - This place was fine for lunch. I will try to see if I can have dinner here some time to get a more comprehensive feel of the place. For now I think they are going to sit at 3 Stars. Nothing wrong with this place. But, no story or anything drastically outstanding and memorable.

The decor is a total throwback to Nickelodeon's show Guts from the 90s. Even if it isn't intentional, I retro-loved it. The salsa is smoky and a little spicy and pairs perfectly with their thin crispy chips. I've been to MANY Mexican restaurants in my lifetime, and this is probably the best salsa of this style I've ever had. For my entree, I tried something I've never even heard of. Carne en su Jugo is steak with beans in tomatillo based soup. Honestly I was shocked. It was delicious, spicy, full of flavor and so simple but extremely well done. With this chilly weather, it warmed me up in the best of ways. I could only finish half of it and I am so excited to finish it for lunch tomorrow. Unfortunately, the tortillas are not made in house. I would love to see more restaurants doing this. Our waitress was attentive and kind, bringing beverages and checking on us with appropriate frequency. We will be back, and frequently!
