I ordered the #7 combination plate which was an enchilada and chile relleno and came with rice and beans only I ordered all beans and they gave me all rice, oh well mistakes happen. The nice waiter ended up bringing me some beans. Everything was very tasty and seasoned just right. I just don't care much for rice. My favorite Mexican restaurant in the Gladstone area is El Maguey! It's our go to spot for delicious food and a great atmosphere. I've tried so many different dishes on their menu, and I've loved every single one. You can't go wrong with their chips and salsa they're amazing! If you're a fan of spicy food, be sure to ask for their spicy salsa. It has a great smoky kick to it! I recently ordered a skillet with chicken, steak, shrimp, onions, peppers, and a generous amount of cheese. I also added chorizo and jalapeños to it, which took the flavor to a whole new level. This evening my daughter took me to dinner at El Maguey restaurant in Martin City, Missouri. I've never been there before. I've made traditional Mexican food for 40+ years and I'm not easily impressed when eating out. Let me tell you! This place was THE BEST I've had in any of the states I've had it! Fresh, hot, unique in flavor and spices, beautifully presented in a rustic way! And the amount and quality is fantastic for the price! The servers were on top of it without pestering. The food was very average Tex Mex. Even the chips & salsa weren't great. The service was absolutely horrible from the moment we stepped inside. The lady as the register was doing paperwork and didn't acknowledge us. Finally a man seated us and took our drink orders but other than that he took our orders & never checked back on us. After waiting & not getting drink refills I asked for our check. The woman at the cash register wasn't friendly at all & did not say thank you when paid. There were only 10-12 tables with guests max & he wasn't serving more than 5 tables while we were there. The restaurant wasn't busy/crowded. I used to like eating here but the last few times have been awful. The dining room was dirty and grimy feeling. As for the food, my wife likes the Gordo Special which has a lot of shrimp and seasoned well, always consistent. I got a Carne Asada Burrito. It was supposed to have seasoned steak with beans wrapped in a tortilla smothered in burrito sauce. It only had grilled "unseasoned" steak. I asked the waiter about it and he argued with me, claiming it was served correctly. I wasn't pleased and barely tipped him and wrote a note on the tab the dish was "horrible." we enjoy coming here with large parties because they are very accommodating with the space they have as well as the service. The employees here are very friendly and helpful and accommodating large groups and we never have an issue. We love their tacos and enchiladas. my kids are fan of their quesadillas and all of their desserts. This is one restaurant that we can all go to and agree as a family. El Maguey is one of the first places I tried when I moved into the Northland from being on the Kansas side of the city. As soon as I tried their hot salsa, I knew only good things would come out of that meal. Their micheladas are one of the best in town, the are MASSIVE and they have my favorite beer to mix in (modelo negra). The hot salsa is smokey and flavorful, and their cheese dip has different sizes, but I promise you don't need a large unless you're feeding a large family! The medium size is literally a cereal bowl, and it's at like $7-8 which is a steal. Every dish I've ordered from here is delicious, but a couple of my favorites would definitely be the Chilidrinas with Carne asada and al pastor, and then their Enchiladas Suizas. Sometimes the service can be slow, but they are constantly packed during dinner hours so cut them some slack! No matter how the service is the food always makes it worth the wait - it's one of our regular spots in North KC for Mexican. read more

Hidden gem in the Northland. Not sure how I missed this place all these years. Salsa has a good flavor and a little kick. We ordered pico de gallo which was tasty. I had a strawberry daiquiri. They offered to sugar the rim but I declined. It was a nice bowl shaped stem and delicious cocktail. Dinner was the steak tips Chimmi. It was a pretty plate presentation. Wow! How have I not rated this place yet?! El Maguey is my favorite place for Mexican cuisine in the north land. The food is delicious, and prices are so low! Seriously, just yesterday we were there for date night and ordered the chicken nachos appetizer for $7.25, and could have skipped our entree it was so big! I also have not found anywhere else in the city that makes the mango margarita like they do at El Maguey. I know you've probably had a strawberry margarita, but that pales in comparison to the mango margarita's tastiness. Finally, I will say that the service is always great. They have a large variety to choose from, but it can be a little overwhelming. I was thinking that maybe they have too much of a variety on the menu, but I do like options so I won't fault them for that. Takes a little longer to figure out what you want though. Not super impressed with this place! It's your typical Mexican eatery with not much to boast about. I ordered the carne asada tacos and when they came to the table they had no cilantro or onion it was just plain steak. I also ordered guacamole and it was very under seasoned. This place has mixed reviews, but we had a good lunch experience here. The food and the service were just as good as any other local Mexican restaurant (and there are a lot on North Oak!). Don't let the strip mall look scare you away...it's all about taste...they start you off with great chips and salsa...they serve the super thin ones, crispy and hot, offer three levels of heat for dipping, and throw in a huge mug of Mexican beer, several flavored on tap...what more do you want...? The menu runs from basic quesadillas to shrimp and chicken combos, then to Mexican speciality dishes, then the fajitas...we've had them all, and every time we clean our plate or get the balance of the huge portions to go...and oops, we've left the leftover box on the table, only to realize our mistake as the garage closes...so sad... Food is good; but management is awful! My family and I were ordering out one Friday night 3/22/2024 and management let someone cut in line to pay their bill before us. Keep in mind they only have 1 register and are slow to ring people up. When asking management why they would let another person cut in line, they got contentious with me stating they had dined in and did not order for carry out in a negative tone. Isn't the purpose of carry out to get in and out and for convenience? Management proceed to argue and not make the situation right. I understand that they're busy, but please be mindful of those people who were in line first and for God's sakes don't argue with a customer! My wife and I had a crying baby in the car and just wanted to pay for our food and get out. Unfortunately, we will never go back to here. They lost a good customer due to poor management. I went to this location with my family. Customer service was horrible, we waited to be seated without being greeted for a good five minutes. Then when we did get seated our server was not welcoming, we didn't get our drinks ordered or chips and salsa for about five minutes and he was not friendly at all. Never took our plates or cleaned our tables. Food was great and hot, however when we picked up our tacos they all were falling apart and when we asked for new ones we did not get them for about 10 minutes and by time he came there was no point. I was extremely disappointed. It took awhile before we received water. When our order was finally taken it took too long to arrive. My food came first and about 15 minutes later my daughter food arrived! I ordered the enchiladas and chimichanga, and a tamale. Each one taste the same as far as seasoning. Very bland and and the enchilada and chimichanga did not hold together at all. My daughters food was missing cheese. The food all fell apart which was so disappointing.
