I also got the taco flight, while my husband ordered the quesabirria tacos....everything was fantastic. We started with the guacamole, which was made table side right in front of us, and it was hands down the BEST guacamole I've ever had! My daughter loved the salsa, and the dessert flight was the perfect sweet ending to an amazing meal. The service was outstanding, the atmosphere was incredible, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. I will definitely be back! This is officially my new favorite Mexican restaurant in Kansas City and, in my opinion, the best Mexican food in town. read more

Upon first glance, the place looks well-decorated, lively, has good vibes, etc. However, I was pretty disappointed upon closer inspection. My friend and I went on a Saturday night. There was a wait of about 20 min-- not bad. I was excited that the food would be fresh! The music was quite loud, but I suppose that's to be expected of any place on a weekend night. When we sat down, we were given chips and salsa. When we asked for hot salsa, it was an extra charge. Even though most Mexican places provide a spicy version at no charge, we went ahead and decided to try it. I wouldn't recommend it. The flavor was almost bitter, and it didn't seem fresh. I ordered the quesadilla with shredded chicken, and it arrived sopping wet. The tortilla on the bottom was soggy, and I ended up having to heat it with a fork and knife. There was barely any cheese. The side of beans lacked in flavor. The only highlight of the dinner was their queso. However, at $8 for their smallest portion, I felt like it would have been easier to just buy Gordo's queso from the store and eat it at home. To top it off, I felt like the restaurant was dirty. If you look closely at the chairs, walls near the tables, under the tables, and in corners, it feels like the surfaces haven't been cleaned properly. If I were to recommend some place else in the area that's comparable in terms of type of food and ambiance, I'd recommend Palacio Maya in Independence (not the one in the Northland). read more

The restaurant gets busy but that speaks to how good it is but we were seated with only a short wait. The salsa was really good where you can see the veggies and cilantro that were added. You will definitely need a refill. I ordered Catrina's burrito with chicken and it was seasoned well and was a large portion. My husband ordered the taco flight and he enjoyed his tacos as well. We ended up here only because it was convenient for us but it was a good choice. Overall the food was great but our waiter is the reason for only 4 stars. He was very impatient and didn't really want to answer any questions. I know they were busy but we were dining at the end of the rush so there was no need to be rude. I recently tried Catrina's for the first time and really enjoyed it. The decor caught my attention right away, it's so fun, from the swings out front to the pink tree in the middle of the restaurant I ordered the shrimp enchiladas, and they were delicious filled with nice size shrimp, topped with spinach and avocado, and covered in white queso. I also ordered a margarona (a margarita with a Corona) to wash it all down. The guacamole appetizer is made fresh at your table. We didn't order it since I was the only one in my group who would've eaten it, and the portion looked large enough to share. I'll just have to return to try it. This place was awesome and so was the staff. We had an enormous party. We started with a reservation with 20 people (ready before we got there) but people just kept coming. We probably had 45 people when it was all said and done. The staff were champs! They just kept finding tables to add and never missed a beat with drinks or food. Wow! For stumbling upon this place because it just so happened to be closest to our hotel, we made an incredible find. Walking in the vibe was incredible. It's so well decorated and you can tell the staff really takes care of the restaurant well. It was so clean and the energy was immaculate. The food was incredible too! 8/22/26 was my first time at Catrina's - we had a party of 4 family members. The atmosphere is fun and different and the food was good. I liked the chips and salsa and my dinner was tasty and nicely presented. I had a skinny margarita and it was not good. I can't pinpoint the flavor but there was something off. The biggest negative creating the 2 star review was the intensely loud 5 birthday announcements by the staff during our 1.5 hour dinner. It was so loud we couldn't talk and had to cover our ears. I've certainly been to other restaurants that have a song but this was over the top with an extremely high pitched whistle. We visited here on our last day in town and it did not disappoint! It did take a little bit of time to get seated because no one was at the host stand but once we were seated, our server was friendly and was very helpful with our selections. The drinks were very pretty and tasty. We had the Black-arita, Basil Berry Margarita, Bahama Mama, and the Spicy Jarrito Cantarito (which was really good). The salsa that comes with the chips was really good as well. In our party of 6, we ordered the Esquites, Cheese steak burritos, Pollo A la Piña, Tacos de camaron, Tacos de pescado, enchiladas, and kids chicken tenders. I really enjoyed the Pollo a la pina. The esquites were a bit fairy. I especially loved that even though the chicken was thin, it was not dry. It was seasoned very well. My dad thought the cheese steak burritos was ok. My sister enjoyed her shrimp tacos. My daughter thought the fish tacos were ok but wished she specified she wanted them fried. You can get them either way and she forgot to specify and they didn't ask when she ordered. My husband also liked his enchiladas. Upon arrival, the outside decor was fun and colorful, including a flower wall and swings (perfect for pics lol). From the second we walked in, the vibe was upbeat, colorful, and welcoming. I so love the aesthetic of this restaurant. You always try to seek out authentic ethic dining experiences and the decor sets the tone. We ordered: Taquitos Flights, Catrina's Burrito (shrimp), esquites, Enchiladas Chipotle and 2 fabulous drinks Cantarito Jamaica and Paleta Mexican The presentation of all the dishes were so impressive, I took so many pictures from different angles including the drinks! As soon as we walked up, I noticed the operational misses--the outdoor swings were broken, the bonfire area was out of propane, and the waiting area is frustratingly small. For a place banking on the "vibe," those are big gaps. ​As for the food, the math doesn't quite add up. We had an excellent experience here yesterday! We all got a different plate and everything was delicious, I got tacos, my boyfriend got the burrito, my friend got the special rice and chicken which was so yummy! I also have to shoutout their queso which was soooooo good with the chips but also mixed in with the rice! When we sat down we had a server assistant bring all of us waters and chips and salsa immediately! Then our server was right there to greet us and take our order faster than we were ready but was super chill about waiting a few minutes. Our food also came out in less than 10 minutes which was great because we were hungry after a day at the zoo! The vibes in here are just an added bonus to the great service. They have the cutest decorations outside and inside, and I also loved the music playing, it was upbeat music and called for a good time! We will definitely be returning again in the future! Catrinas is pretty darn delicious! Service is great, quick, and very friendly as well! I have been here a handful of times and have found a favorite entrée and drink as well. Their carne asada torta is just necessary to try if you have never had one before. If you are old enough to drink, and can handle a touch of spice, do yourself a favor and try their pineapple habanero margarita! Just a sip and you get some great flavor, keep sipping and the heat starts building which is why I enjoy ordering another once my cup is empty. The one piece I would suggest to make this place better would to either have salted instead of plain tortilla chips or adding some salt to their salsa; this is probably my personal preference as I like saltier salsas either way. Definitely a place I will continue to support and have already recommended to many of my coworkers! read more

We finally made it to Catrina's. It was so good! The service was spot on. We were greeted as soon as we walked in, which was nice. I don't think we had fully settled into our seats when they were setting down our glasses of water and chips and salsa. The chips were warm and fresh. The salsa was chunkier than what most Mexican restaurants serve, which I loved. I like a little more heat, but it was still delicious. We also ordered a bowl of queso blanco, that was great. My wife had a chicken taco salad. She thought it was good, but would have liked a little less guacamole. I had the birria tacos. They were probably the biggest ones I've ever had. The beef was tender and flavorful. The consommé was so good and beefy that I didn't even use the salsa that came with the entree. It had just the right amount of cheese inside the perfectly fried tortilla. The rice and beans were pretty standard, just wish there'd been a bigger serving, but since the tacos were so good, I didn't mind that much. Out with the family and trying to find a place to feel comfortable with kids but also have the ability to get adult meals - and not just a chicken wrap or burger. This place crushed it. The service and atmosphere are excellent. The food was REALLY tasty. Fresh and excellent guacamole. The only thing that I didn't love was the straight cheese sauce, it was a tad salty to me, but with my meal it was a great compliment. Our sever Gabriel couldn't have been any better. He was very attentive and made sure we had everything we ordered but also what we needed to make our experience a great one. Upon entering, we were greeted immediately. The ambiance was welcoming and playful. We ended up having a party of 6, which helped because each person ordered something different. I, myself, ordered the Pollo Asado, which I will admit I couldn't finish but was a very generous portion. I appreciated that it wasn't over seasoned and came out piping hot. I agree with another review I read that the chips tasted like they may have been a different grain. I ordered a small cheese dip as well, which, unfortunately, I ate before taking a picture. It was, in my opinion, similar to a queso Blanco. The salsa was pretty good. Good portions of food for the cost. Great customer service and even spots out front for pictures should you choose. What a fabulous experience! Minus spilling the drink we were sharing very soon after getting it... ‍ Catrina's was a whole vibe. I went with my brother & sister in law that I vacationed to Cancun with a few years ago and we felt a little like we'd be transported back there. The restaurant is gorgeously done & I LOVED all of the artwork. The chips & salsa were fresh with the perfect amount of spice. We got a mango cantarito and it was delicious. I had a quesabirria & it was the best I've had in the KC area. The taco flight included some delicious carnitas and the best pastor I've ever had. And of course we had to get some dessert. The dessert flight came in a and it was so adorable. The churros were delicious and fresh and the sopapillas were the best I'd had around here. We also got the sweet plantains & we all agreed they were the best of the desserts we tried. I would go back even just for them. If you haven't been here yet, add it to your list. It was a bit of a trek for us because I live in OP and they live down southwest of me about 40 minutes, but definitely worth it and we will return (even though I'm still feeling embarrassed about the drink incident ).
