We always love our visits to Rancho Cap Winery. The food is great and so is the wine. We've been coming since they opened and love having them in Ladera. We went tonight and I had the new steak salad which was ok but they need to bring back the old steak salad. That was so amazing I would crave it and would go just to have that. The new steak salad was a little disappointing. I will get something different next time. I am still giving 5 stars though because our night there was awesome. Unfortunately, our first (and last) time dining here was filled with the most depressed/lazy staff we have ever experienced in our lives, it was bizarre. There wasn't anyone at the front when we initially arrived, and when he did arrive, he seemed miserable. He then handed menues to the young lady, who also seemed miserable, as she just turned and walked away without a "hi" "follow me" or even a hand gesture to follow her, which seemed even more odd. We were seated in a booth and our daughters were given pictures to color and some crayons, hooray! We placed orders to the young gentleman who initially took care of us, then he told us he was leaving early because "it's a very slow evening" which didn't strike us as a big deal, except we weren't introduced to the lady before he left. This simple gesture is something expected from such a pricey restaurant and provides a better first impression. This is just the beginning. Our daughter wasn't fond of her drink choice, so we waited to ask our new waitress for a different one. Mind you, there was maybe 6 tables of people, in a room that could clearly seat at least 6 times that amount of people, It was not busy whatsoever. We waited so long that I ended up getting up and walking all the way to the bar and asked them to make another chocolate milk since it was a hit with our youngest. The gentleman and young lady behind the bar counter were very friendly and helpful! I sincerely thanked them for their help as we began waiting for our new waitress to add to our order. She finally arrived, but when we asked if they might have any steak sauce for our daughters steak, she replied"...hm, I'm not sure we do, but I'll check" she walked away to check on a couple tables (no big deal) and then ended up at the front desk with about 6 other staff members and began socializing and laughing while we waited. Once again, she was gone for so long, yet right in front of us, without a care in the world that she should be doing her job, not me. I was insulted to say the least, so I stood up AGAIN and did her job for her. I asked another gentleman that was walking our way if they had steak sauce and he immediately brought it to the table within a minute! At this point, I was starting to get pretty upset that we were being treated this way. Making us wait over and over to the point that I was the one working! My husband and I don't work hard to hand our money off to slackers, especially ones like this waitress. She finally comes back and asks how everything is, if she could get us anything etc. to which I replied "nope, I got everything myself, including the steak sauce" she apologized and said "Im sorry that's my fault" I simply said "yeah I know" and continued helping our youngest with her food. She stormed off to the front desk again, in my clear line of sight, and starts running her mouth to the girl up there and pointing over her shoulder towards our table. The young lady looked at me and I threw my hands up ‍ Now our blonde, 45ish year old waitress was going around to all the staff complaining about what just happened. She even went to the people in the kitchen, I later noticed, as I turned around grab my bag to walk out. My husband and I didn't feel like our food would be safe to eat at the point, and I was livid at our situation, so we chose to leave. We'd had enough of this poor treatment on what was supposed to be a fun "fancy dinner" out with our kiddos. Instead, an immature, lazy, 40-something year old waitress had to ruin it. We had an absolutely wonderful experience elsewhere, after overhearing her talk about it AGAIN to a different staff members on the patio as we walked out. At this point, it has become comical and I can laugh at the absolute stupidity of this situation. I hope the owner is very proud of his staff, because this is a sinking ship in the making. I absolutely love this place! I love the ambiance, especially the wrap around patio. The food and wine is great especially on a warm sunny day. Since it was our first time, the waitress was so kind and offered to bring us tasters before we ordered our wine. I tried their Sauvignon blanc and ended up going with the Marissa. It was refreshing, fruity, and perfect about of sweetness. For food, we ordered artichoke dip, cheese and charcuterie board, and margarita pizza. The artichoke dip was creamy and warm. As for the cheese and charcuterie board had a great variety of cheese and meat options, which were generous in portion. The margarita pizza was on a thin crust and tasty. It's not like your regular margarita pizza since it has a balsamic glaze drizzled on top. I'll definitely be back, especially during the summer! read more

The service was AMAZING! The restaurant is gorgeous and very spacious. The wines are ok. The food was inconsistent. You have to start out with the Fig Bruschetta! The arugula was fresh, the whipped Gorgonzola paired super well with the fig jam, not overly sweet and the balsamic glaze really tied the dish together. On a whim we got the fries bc the server made it sound great but it was just a bowl of fries with some cheese chunks on top and the lemon truffle sauce wasn't on the fries but on the side for dipping. Weird flavor and the fries were almost crispy. I ordered the Cajun shrimp and it was delicious! Juicy shrimp, delicious Cajun cream sauce and crostini's to dip in the sauce. I swapped the jasmine rice for buttermilk mashed potatoes and it really went well with the sauce. My friend ordered the surf and turf frites. She had to send it back three times bc she wanted it to be juicy but the flat iron steak was super small and over cooked and dry. It was the size of half the knife. The second one came back also dry and the last one was bigger and at that point she gave up and just ate the veggies. The shrimp were small and dry too, not like the Cajun shrimp which were big and juicy. The chimichurri was fresh and tasted good. We never get dessert but it was the last Tuesday of her membership so we wanted to try the Whiskey Bundt cake. The whiskey caramel sauce was decadent and the cake was soft and melt in your mouth. Overall the dessert and the fig bruschetta appetizer were the best parts of the meal. If you're looking for a fun, social place give it a try bc the service was good and they have live music some nights. A little pricey for the size of the entrees and the wine wasn't fantastic for the price either. They have beers and brewery X seltzer on tap. read more

We started with the ok belly bites which were sinfully delicious. My wife had the airline chicken which came with asparagus and mashed potatoes and mushrooms. Very good. Moist and delicious. I had the margarita pizza. The crust was perfect but there was way too much balsamic vinegar which detracted from it. For dessert we split the crème brûlée which was rich, sweet and just right. This is a nice spot for a date night or girls night out to catch up over wine and dinner. They've updated their menu since my last visit, removing the delicious steak frites. Shame as it was delicious! I ordered the fillet mignon, which was seasoned well and served with mashed potatoes and veggies. All were very tasty. My girlfriend ordered the Thai seared ahi salad, which was, unfortunately, underwhelming, but she didn't want to send it back because she felt bad. The service was great and responsive. Last Sunday I went with my girlfriend to enjoy a day out. We went to Rancho Capistrano winery for Brunch , since it was familiar and been there several times before. I was so disappointed with food and extremely disappointed with the service. We were a table of four and everyone else service was appropriate expect for myself. My plates were not pick up after the next appetizers or the main course( not a big deal), but the waiter offered to make room on the table and placed my menu on the ground leaning against my chair. Later when I left a $5.00 tip and addressed the service on the bill a Manager asked about the service. I explained the situation, she apologized and asked to visit again. The reasonably priced set menu featured a standout appetizer: Fig Bruschetta. The sweet figs, arugula, and whipped Gorgonzola cheese - all topped with a balsamic glaze - made it our favorite dish of the night. For our main courses, we had the Chicken Rollatini and 16 oz Boneless Hand Cut Ribeye. Both dishes were flavorful, very well prepared and accompanied by standout sides. We shared a bottle of Pinot Noir that surprisingly good given how was affordable it was. A night to remember....family in town from LA and Dallas. The staff treated us like Kings and Queens tonight. Raised the bar in Customer Obsession!! Walked in. 7:15 reservation. Party of 8. Table ok but my senior aged father mentioned a draft from a door opening and closing to the patio. I asked the host Jeff if he could accommodate us to move to another table. Given how busy the evening was, I wasn't hopeful. I expressed how often my fiance and I frequent this establishment and he was very gracious to accommodate us. We were so thankful! That was the first " surprise, and delight" experience of our evening. When my nephews who are five and seven wanted to have mac & cheese, and there was nothing on the menu our waitress, Allie, graciously accommodated having the chefs, make a special dish of mac & cheese off-menu!! This was such a special treat. He also appreciated special request to every dish and also special accommodations to our Cocktails! We literally shut the restaurant down... The fact that they were playing oldies but goodies had my dad and FULL Zen mode. All night... We're still sitting here at the table and he is singing every song. He is happy as a clam. And also, I might add that I was a very special surprise to get a birthday treat at the end of the night since my birthday is coming up in a few hours here. All around this was a very special evening and I couldn't ask for anything more the entire table agreed!!! This is exactly why we keep coming back to this restaurant again and again not only because we live a few minutes away, but because the quality of the food is so amazing. I gave them 3 stars on decor, ambience and friendly staff. This was our first time and we were immediately impressed by the layout and the cleanliness of the restaurant. Especially in an area like Ladera where most restaurants have kids running amok while parents gab with friends oblivious to the carnage. This is a welcome change. I was hoping for a full bar but understand, as the name implies, they are there to sell wine so I settled on the Hombre Cabernet and was pleasantly surprised. We came for the steaks so it paired well. I just wish someone asked me if I wanted a second round... My wife and I both ordered filets, hers a 6oz and mine a 10oz. When asked what temperature we wanted our steaks we both answered "medium+" only to be told they only do "medium or medium well" so we chose the latter. Now any steak chef that is worth his/her salt knows what medium+ is and knows how to prepare it but not wanting to be difficult, we agreed on medium well. This brings me to my next point of contention, the steak that arrived. The presentation was very nice to look at but it was not your typical filet mignon as it was just an inch thick and it was beyond well done. Not a good first impression... my wife's 6oz was exactly the same, an inch thick and overdone. It almost appeared as though our steaks were butterflied and missing the other half. It was tough like a USDA "Choice" steak rather than a true prime filet mignon. It was short on seasoning as well. The sauce it came with was more like a bbq or A1 than a true Demi glacé. It was just ok, a bit too sweet. I wish I knew that the potatoes and veggies were the base foundation that the steak would sit atop for presentation sake so that I could request they be separate on the plate so that I could enjoy each course individually but I'm not sure that's not an option since the menu doesn't offer sides as a separate selection. Each dish is paired with a starch and a vegetable so maybe everything is predicated on appearance rather than experience. I don't know but I do know what makes a great steakhouse and this one has some work to do if it's going to survive. Especially in an area like Ladera where people aren't spending money the way they used to so you gotta bring your "A" game. I was honest with the manager when she stopped by, after our dinner, to ask how everything was. I answered her with an honest review to which she replied, "Well, hopefully we do better for you next time.". It wasn't until a few minutes later that I realized I should've responded with, "That's assuming we'll be back." Pretty optimistic considering the feedback I had just given. I do hope ownership takes note. $200 is a lot of money to drop on food that was not very good. One last observation. Valentines Day was on a Friday, two days before our visit. Why they were still using the preset V Day menu is beyond me?! I avoid restaurants on V-Day for just that reason. read more

Beautiful rustic, vineyard decor with large booths and tables , which makes it a great choice for a girls night out or a small birthday celebration. There's plenty of parking in the plaza and on the street. They have happy hour almost all night on Wednesdays and Thursday's. I didn't have any of the alcohol but my friends were all content with what they ordered. Food: Fig Bruschetta - whipped Gorgonzola , fig compote, arugula, balsamic glaze on crostini. This appetizer is soo yum, just the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Spinach artichoke dip - this was pretty standard , a few in my party thought it was a bit salty, but I love salty food, so I enjoyed it . Brussels sprouts - prosciutto , garlic oil, lemon juice, balsamic reduction. I love this dish, would definitely get it again next time we come. Ranch brisket burger - this was a great burger , the patty was flavorful and juicy and I asked for some garlic aioli to spread on the bun. It's big enough to split if you don't have a huge appetite. The place is very big inside and the staff were all friendly. It was our first time here for dinner. We got the bruschetta appetizer and it was ok. Small pieces and drenched in liquid but the whipped cheese was good. Main courses were both bad. Duck special looked like a crime scene. They pan roasted the duck and then put it crispy skin side down in the sauce making it rubber and not good. The crispy Brussels were no longer as they placed them on top of a puree that had been in a blender and was way too loose. The other main we got was the ahi salad. Again no seasoning to be found. Dressing must have been water? No flavor. Hard to mess up salad but they did. We won't be back. I think they likely only have cooks and not a chef doing quality control. read more

Next in the taste list is the Duke DBA. Sample Duke. So once that happened, DBA AGED in Bournon barrels will be even more aromatic, no? However, my liking was more on the Duke side. The bourbon didn't do anything to enhance flavor. I liked the tobacco flavor in Duke. 3rd pour is a raised by wolves. Mellows are always my fav....and with that the ... So at the end of day will I be a member for 6 months at $420 a month? No, I'll stick to the few bottles at full price, in long run I don't drink 2 bottles a month, but when I do drink, it's the best of the best. I'll purchase bottles as I need. Parking can be an issue because it is right next to the San Juan train station. Self-pay parking kiosks are available. I paid $4 for two hours which I think is reasonable. We were seated in the patio which was enjoyable for a summer lunch. After a lot of chit chat we made our lunch choices. My friends ordered an Ahi Poke Stack and a Veggie Wrap. I ordered the Watermelon Salad with grilled chicken. We all agreed that the food was amazing. My Watermelon Salad consisted of juicy watermelon, goat cheese, cucumbers, onions and mint. It was very refreshing! The only problem we had was that my friend that ordered the wrap did not want French fries so she asked about substitutions. She decided on a small side salad and was up charged $6. I think this charge is excessive given the size of the salad and the menu made no mention of an up charge. On Father's Day, my son and his wife took us to Rancho Capistrano Winery for their brunch at 1pm. This was our first visit. The place is very large inside and outside and there was a lot of people there. But it did not feel crowded. My son and I split out breakfast, the Breakfast Burrito and the Veggie Omelet. Wow! Large portions of food and very fresh ingredients. The place is very clean and great decor and seating is excellent, not too close to others, great ambiance. We sat outside on a hot day, but the breeze was blowing through the patio, and it was nice and cool. The help was very friendly, attentive and helpful. The food was delicious. All of us in our party had a great meal and we will go back again. It is a great place to have a family get together. Oh! First, the good. The place is beautiful and three seats are comfy. The white wine sampler was delicious. The menu is interesting and varied. This is not a bad place, just kind of meh and did the prices it should be better than meh. Latte came out luke warm. I saw them make it fresh, so not sure what is going on there. Pork belly bites were a tad too salty. Surprised no appetizer plates offered. Burger was ok. Bun was burnt, over-toasted and dry. Couldn't taste the cheese. Onions overpowered the flavor of everything. Fries weren't seasoned and over fried - more like chips. The burgers down the street at The Counter is way better! We got a quick check in after the food arrived.......... And then nada. Would have had more wine, so their loss. But also mine, as it would be nice to drink with the meal. We ate inside, but gnats were still bugging (pun intended lol) us. There's a note on the front door saying use the front door without explaining what that means. The swordfish was cooked perfectly but the sauce could've been more flavorful, I should've asked for some salsa or hot sauce. The Beef Ragu was unique and pieces of beef so tender they fell apart and paired perfectly with the burrata cheese and pappardelle. My family and I gave this restaurant a second chance after having had a "not so great" experience the first time. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment once again. I had the duck which was not only a miniscule portion of duck, it was overcooked and had lots of inedible gristle. The ragu dish was flavorless and the swordfish dish was dry. The quality of these dishes was not anywhere near a match for their cost. Also, the music is still too loud for dining which hampers the ambience. We will not return to this restaurant. The San Juan location has been a much better experience. We will possibly opt for that location in the future. read more

Waited 40 minutes for 2 food items a flat bread and a salad. Went to use the restroom and the seat was loose! What started as a disappointment during my appetizer experience quickly turned up the heat with an amazing fire-roasted mushroom truffle pizza that I just couldn't get enough of! I ordered two California reds off of the happy hour menu that were very good as well as a honey blond lager that I also enjoyed. If you are coming for drinks, vibes, and decent food, I recommend Rancho Capistrano Winery overall. I was the first customer to arrive upon opening today, Tuesday 1/7/25, and received outstanding and attentive service. Vibey music and a semi-casual to formal atmosphere made me feel comfortable even in my flip flops and shorts, but you can dress up all the same and not feel out of place for a date night out. My only disappointment was that the pork belly bites were overcooked and dry. The sauce was sticky and not an overly salty soy based glaze, although I would personally like a touch more sweetness. Some honey, and/or a spice kick like sriracha or something similar would really perfect the sauce. The tiny super crispy bits were good, but the majority of larger bites were dry and only passably edible due to the sauce. Definitely NOT the melt-in-my mouth pork belly experience I wanted and was expecting, with a mouthfeel similar to a high temperature, quickly cooked, pork chop. Thankfully, the pizza and drinks MORE than made up for it. I will definitely come back to check the quality of their other entrees, as the pizza was enough to make me curious about the rest of the menu. They just need to work on the cook of the pork belly bites to get them more moist and tender, and looking at a few other reviews, other customers seem to have similar critiques on them. read more
