I'm skeptical of Mexican food in the Midwest, as it tends to cater to bland palates, but I was delighted to find that Rancho Loco is a lot like the restaurants I grew up with in California. The menu is huge and offers a wide variety of food, and what we had actually included some spices and nuance. A number of different hot sauces sat on the table, too, to add a little heat if so desired. Portions were huge. The restaurant had a nice ambience, too. The tables were nicely spaced out, the decor on-theme without being over-the-top. A soccer game was on the TV over us, which my husband enjoyed watching. Service was great the whole time. We were never kept waiting long, and food came out right as we finished up our chip bowl. I'd definitely come here again! read more

Rancho Loco Grill & Bar- Red Wing, MN Over the weekend, my family of four visited Rancho Loco in Red Wing. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing and upsetting especially as we were trying to accommodate our child's dietary needs. When placing our order, we specifically asked our waitress to serve the vegetables on a separate plate and to provide double rice with no beans, as our 9-year-old son does not like spicy food or beans. The food took quite a while to arrive. When it finally did, the steak was covered in a green vegetable sauce, and the second plate had rice, beans and vegetables not what we had requested. We politely reminded the waitress of our request, and her reaction was unexpectedly unprofessional. She angrily grabbed the vegetable plate, slammed it onto another table, and raised her voice, saying, "Okay, I'll bring you a different plate." She did not take back the incorrect steak. When we asked for a new steak prepared plain, as originally ordered, she again responded with attitude, asking, "What's wrong with it?" We explained that it had a sauce on it we didn't want. She left without further response. About 10-15 minutes later, the cook personally brought out a plain steak, which was appreciated and finally matched our request. However, when the bill came, we were charged for both steaks, despite the first being incorrect due to their mistake. By that point, we just wanted to leave the uncomfortable environment and decided to pay without arguing further.This experience left us disappointed, especially due to the lack of courtesy and professionalism shown toward our family and particularly toward our child's needs. Based on this visit, we will not be returning, and we do not recommend this restaurant to families, especially those with young children or dietary requests. Thank you. read more

A lovely evening of flying, we decided to land in Red Wing for dinner. We decided on Mexican food and Rancho Loco didn't disappoint. Although we couldn't drink, we were impressed by the number of beers on tap. I love love love seeing Modelo Especial & Modelo Negra on tap. There were at least 4 Mexican beers on tap and I counted eight Mexican beer options available in bottles. Love this! The complimentary chips and salsa were great. We decided to get two combination platters so we could try four different items. The chimichanga was cooked perfectly, covered in a white cheese sauce. The flauta was equally as good, as was the enchilada. The chili relleno looked amazing -- huge -- but we didn't get to it because our eyes were bigger than our stomachs (thanks to the really good rice & beans!). Our server was sweet and took good care of our requests. A fair price for more food than we could handle, we'll keep this place in mind if we're in Red Wing needing a Mexican food fix. read more

An easy to miss spot but so worth the drive. In the Pottery Place plaza before downtown Red Wing. The best refried beans I have had in this state. Got the Chilaquiles Rancheros and it was the best chilaquiles I have ever had. The egg was PERFECTION and they added carne asada too. Seriously tasty carne asada, spiced really well. Coworkers had the fajitas which looked amazing, the crazy chicken, which also seemed wonderful, and a quesadilla, which was huge. First impressions were okay. The person seating us wasn't overly welcoming but they did seat us. Next I headed to the bathroom which appeared clean until looking at the edges of the wood trim that were covered in dust and dirt. The grab bars in the stall were literally falling off of the wall and would not work for someone that actually needed them. There was no back of the toilet. Went out to the table to join my group and the waiter just got there to take our order. He was the same person that seated us and was just as unenthusiastic about serving. We got a cheese dip and the cheese wasn't even all the way melted, it was lumpy. My mom's iced tea smelled like sewer, it was gross. We tried to stop the waiter to ask for refills and more chips as he walked by but he ignored us. On his way back through my husband again politely said "excuse me" and the waiter responded with "I heard you before" and walked away. Our meals came out and they were okay at best. The beef fajitas were dry, the fajita chimi was soggy and the sopes were just okay. Our waiter came back once towards the very end of the meal and we got refills on drinks (except my mom who didn't want to drink the gross tea). He brought back drinks since we had been out before we even got our meals. We got the bill and paid. I don't think I would recommend this to anyone. It was loud. The booths were held together with duct tape. The service was horrible. The food was okay at best. I would spend your money elsewhere on a better lunch. read more

My 3-star rating comes because the day we were there it didn't seem that any of the staff spoke English and the sea food dinners we ordered were likely given to someone else. We got something different than what we ordered and didn't realize that until we'd tried some of it. No one came by to check on us until a different waitperson delivered the bill. We were in town because my son had a soccer game which wrapped up around 8pm. Afterwards, a group of about 15 or 16 of us wanted to grab something to eat before heading back to the northwest suburbs. We stopped at Kelly's first and they told us they could not accommodate, but suggested we head to Rancho Loco. We took their advice and I'm glad we did. First of all, they were patient with all our kids, which was good enough, to be honest. Then the food started coming out and it exceeded expectations. I had the Tres Marias enchiladas and was very happy with it. The food came quickly and the server was great about splitting up our bill. Having worked in restaurants when I was younger, I know we were high maintenance and though we tried to minimize that as best we could, the staff was awesome. This place was very clean with super friendly staff. Nice decor and tables are spaced out nicely so it doesn't seem crowed. The food was really good with large portions. We're to begin. The black beans were super yummy. I could have ate an entire bowl. Best black bean dip I have ever had. The salsa Wes also very good. Not too hot. Just enough. When our food came out, we were all surprised that there was very little sauce and no cheddar cheese. Alright, a different taste. The chicken was tender but tasteless. "One Bean Short of a Burrito" Oh Fiesta, don't make me quit you! When my family made plans with you for a Father's Day dinner, it was with the expectation that we would receive the same consistently wonderful service and food that we always get from you. I wanted to give you another excellent review. I really did. But this time was different. When most of our food finally arrived an hour after ordering (usually the wait time is about half that, if not less), my family and I immediately noticed that there was something wrong with almost all of our meals. To start with, the burritos were about a third of the size that they normally are. It is a sad day for America when log-sized burritos shrink down to portions that can be eaten in one sitting. The horror! Our food also arrived sans silverware, with our servers leaving too quickly for us to mention the oversight. We were unable to flag down staff or find silverware on any empty tables, so we sat there and watched our food get cold. We contemplated eating caveman-style. We made jokes about the size of our burritos. Our Mexiccoutrements finally arrived with the remainder of our food, at which point my sister politely proclaimed that her meal was missing tortillas and refried beans. Her husband added that while hot sauce was to be left out of his burrito, it was indeed left in. Our server offered to fix the issues immediately. While she did bring back a new hot-sauce-free burrito, the tortillas and refried beans sadly did not make the return trip. My sister had to ask a second time for her missing fixings. During this fiasco, I was doing my best to choke down my chipotle burrito...the same thing I order and enjoy almost every time I visit Fiesta. My theory is that this time the chefs accidentally dropped a whole spice jar of chipotle on my plate--the thing had the Scoville Heat Unit of a Komodo Dragon Chili Pepper! I like to blow fire after eating spicy food just as well as anyone else, but I was in full-on need of a fire extinguisher with this dumpster fire of a burrito! Being a true Minnesota, I finished my plate without complaint in a way that would have made my mother proud back in the 70's. Woohoo! The refried beans finally made an appearance! Unfortunately the first thing that came to mind when we saw them was the "Wiener Water Soup" song. They weren't creamy or pasty, nor did they have the look and consistency of cat food, the way one loves and expects refried beans to look. Instead it appeared and tasted like someone had thrown a few beans into a bowl of water, and then topped the soup with a bit of cheese. While all this was going on, the poor family who had been seated next to us...and before us...had still not received their food. They finally got up and left. Fine Father's Day for the, right? To be fair, our waitress was extremely friendly and apologetic during this entire train wreck. I asked if there was a new chef, and she said there were three. Yes, three. We were understanding that there might be growing pains in such a case. We sympathized with the waitress, believing that most of the issues related to service were likely due to staff trying to fix mistakes from the kitchen in this case. We just hope that this doesn't become the new standard going forward. Start with free chips and salsa, like most Mexican restaurants, but also comes with a Black bean dip which was creamy and delicious. My wife had shrimp sopas and I had arroz texano.
