Honestly, have you ever came across a hole in the wall where you just walk or drive past it everyday and you wonder to yourself: "The hell is this place with the big sign and flourescent lights"? I thought the same thing as I would aimlessly walk and drive by past this Spanish establishment. Low and behold, welcome to Rancho Tipico. This place is pretty much your mom and pop spanish meat shop with all the fixings meat lovers crave for. I'm a common man and usually go for what seems the most appealing to me (which usually means fried and meaty) and the options that they have for appealing looking meats are top notch. I speak very little spanish but my go-to dish is usually the chicharrones y arroz con frijoles. Basically pork rinds and rice with beans. Although the meat is usually dry and pretty salty, the juice that comes from the meat is ever so savoring and the complimentary limet that comes with it is the cherry on top. The yellow rice that I usually get with the meat is also tasty as well. It has a nice light bitter taste with it, which is accompanied by a mix of capers. It literally is a nice touch for the meal. Best part about this place? The portions are godly. Literally just 8 bucks of the aforementioned dish can put your azz in a food coma. The location is a bit strange though, as I said before the decor isnt really the most appealing of all places knowing to the fact that it is in the middle of the projects and the ever growing capitalist buildings of UMass Lowell. Finding parking is almost impossible during lunch hours (or any time for that matter), and someone like I would only go here after class. Its a pretty tough spot to find parking for. read more

On the hunt for some empanadas, we stumbled upon Rancho Tipico, a little Dominican Republic cafeteria style spot with prepared food. This place was not hard to miss, there's a bright yellow big-oh sign plastered right in front and visible from the distance. And when you're inside and decide the aromatic scent of Spanish food is way too irresistible to take it with you, you could dine here since it's not just a takeout spot. Spanish Pasta- Diced tomato, beef, elbow pasta. Good and light. Beef Stew- Very tender beef. Rice with Pigeon Peas- A staple and delicious. No pigeon included. Empanadas (Beef & Chicken)- Disappointed! The one thing we came in here for and both the beef and chicken were completely dry! Literally harsh ground meats inside those stale doughs. Tres Leches Cake- The 3 milk cake with evaporated milk, cream, and condensed milk was luscious. Overall Service: The lady there blatantly skipped us and took a customer that came in after us which wasn't cool. Luckily a guy came out from the back saw us waiting and helped us. Went in here the other day there was literally 8-9' people behind the counter hanging out eating etc. there was one customer who all of them Were waiting on talking to must of been. The worst customer service in a Hispanic Store in Lowell,MA. Shame should give the owner (Gary) of the kind of staff who serve customers when they have no supervision. Incomplete food, call the store and laugh for no reason when you ask for a supervisor. Talk politely and the cashier who dispatch the food tell you we are alone and they hang up the call for no reason. It is not being alone in a store, it is the confidence that the owner gives to their employees to treat customers well. Unfortunately I don't lose anything or money. It is the owner who loses for having employees who do not produce positively for the store, you lose customers because when they read this post they will think twice to visit your store. I was craving Sancocho so we ordered it from there. No call or notification except driver on the way. Received the order fine. BUT inside the bag was chicken soup for 2 not Sancochofor 2. Not much parking only on street parking. Walked in, the workers and customers all gave me looks I guess cause I was asian going into a spanish restaurant (which was so uncomfortable). Staff only speaks Spanish. I had to ask the lady next to me to help me order (which was even more uncomfortable) so I just got it togo. I got lunch there on a Monday. Everything here would go great with beer...butttt that's a different story. Food Everything is fried. Everything. Okay, well 90% of it is. The chicken wings aren't all that special, so you can skip on that. What I do recommend is the bbq ribs, the deep fried pork (with skin), and the potato-meat-balls. The ribs were a sweet tangy flavor served with rice, the pork was crunchy (but a little dry), and the potato-meat-balls are soft and flavorful. It is a fast food atmosphere with a heavy focus on meats and deep fried veggies. Atmosphere I've always seen this location change hands over the past couple of years. It's a hard spot for a restaurant, and a tough location for "walk-ins". On the outside it looks like a generic store you'd find back in your home country (wherever that is). On the inside, it's quite clean and bright. We came at around 2pm, and were surprised to see business still booming even after we left. Staff If you know how to speak Spanish (specifically numbers and sizes), you'll do great. If not, you'll have to get used to pointing at things and making hand gestures as to how much of it you want. They seem like pretty honest folk here since my portion was the same as everyone else's - so language is not a problem. Final Thoughts I'd probably stop by if I was in the mood for some ribs on the run. This location does well because there's very few of them in Lowell. But that doesn't make it a bad thing. read more

Authentic Dominican/Puerto Rican food, old school NYC Cuchifrito style atmosphere. Huge portions at a great price. I ordered a large Arroz Con Gandules, Tostones, Maduros, Cerdo Frito and a Potato Salad. The Rice was perfect, not sticky and very flavorful. The Tostones were cooked perfectly and not dry, Maduros could've been cooked a little longer to produce more caramelization but were still sweet, juicy and delicious, Fried Pork was amazing, crisp on the outside, moist and very flavorful on the inside, the supplied lime wedges are a must! The waitstaff is tough and if you don't speak Spanish or know what it is you want you might feel a little subjective so be patient with them as they are with you! There were many dishes displayed behind the glass in food warmers that I had a hard time deciding which menu offerings to order. The employees spoke limited English and brought me over to the manager. He was young and friendly and appeared to be the only one allowed to manage the register. We were frequently interrupted with customers trying to pay for their meal. We ordered dishes from their warmers in addition to "Made to order" items from their extensive menu. I learned that they also serve breakfast, which my husband and I will definitely be back to try the huevos rancheros! We ordered 2 pounds of chicarron de cerdo (fried pork), 2 large stews, 1 small tray of arroz y gandules, 1 order of paella seafood rice, 1 order of pernil slow roasted pork, 20 pieces of fried chicken, mofongo, sweet plantains, and 12 assorted empanadas. I kept asking the worker if we had enough food and he responded, "You have more than enough!" The young man was very accommodating and gave us a a few extras. He threw in about 8 empanadas, a salad and a drink. He also upgraded a few of the dishes to "large" when we ordered a small. My friend noticed that they delivered so we asked if they could deliver our order at 7:30 PM to his house instead of us coming back to pick it up. The total with delivery came out to about $130.00. THEY ACCEPT DEBIT/CREDIT CARDS! We sipped on homemade sangria as we waited for the food to arrive. The delivery man was very nice and arrived on time. The food was well packed and there was minimal spillage. We laid the containers on the table, buffet style so our friends could decide what they wanted to eat. The meat fillings in the empanadas were dry and lacked excitement. I wished there was a tomato paste to keep it moist and flavorful. I preferred the regular Spanish rice and beans over the paella. The paella was a bit on the salty side and it was hard to eat other saltier items along with it. The seafood used was prepackaged. The pernil slow roasted pork was good but the flavors were inconsistent. You either had a really salty piece or a chunk that lacked flavor. I am also biased because I really love my sister's pernil (even though she's Cambodian and not Hispanic) The winner of the evening was the Chicharro de cerdo, which was recommended by one her Puerto Rican friends. The pork was salty and crispy and fried to perfection. The fresh lime added a perfect contrast to the crispy pork rinds. We ordered 20 pcs of fried chicken. The chicken was actually pieces of a large chicken. The seasoning and batter was good but the packaging made it a bit soggy before it arrived.. We got two red stews, one with chicken (pollo guisado estilo) and one with ox tail (rabo guisado). Although they were a tad bit salty, they were rich in flavor and included large chunks of meat. Overall, I think the meal was good. Although we probably won't be regulars, the Mo and I will definitely be back to try the rest of their menu offerings. After hearing the sounds of my people I interrupted and asked them if there was a Dominican restaurant nearby. There was, so we headed here. I ordered the ravo, white rice and guandule with potato salad. It was $18. Coming from Washington Heights aka the mecca of overpriced and underwhelming Dominican food, I was not amused. I was hoping for a tasty meal, at a reasonable price. The place is a lonchera, so there is minimal seating and tons of take out. I wouldn't say they have only Dominican food but a selection of Spanish food. They have arroz con gandules which is a Puerto Rican dish. They have platanos maduros which is also serve in Cuba and so forth. So far I have had good food and no stomach aches. I typically order rice and beans and some type of meat and since I eat very little my food doesn't surpass the $7 range and that's a great deal. I wouldn't recommend the goat because it's all bone and fat. But their chicken fricassee is delicious. They also have baked chicken and all different kinds of protein. Tonight I tried to order from my favorite Spanish Restaurant. Each time I called there a Lady answered the phone, she spoke to me in Spanish. I dont speak Spanish, so she hung up the phone on me 3x's, each time I called back. I called back a 4th and someone answered speaking in English. But he would not, take my order. He said I would have come there and order, then he would cook the food. My husband got angry wanting to know why they would not take my order over the phone.
