Been shopping here for years. After previous iffy experiences with product quality, resistance to accepting returns (due to quality issues), staff attitudes, etc., glad to report that things have improved. Latest visit yesterday was pleasant and met our needs. Staff were very friendly and helpful - the star is always the relatively elderly gentleman at checkout- such a polite, decent, friendly, and helpful person. A great ambassador for the store. Found everything we needed and also stopped at the cafe for a snack - there too things have improved significantly, selection, quality, and price-wise. Although mainly staffed by Hispanics, their preparation of Indian food is generally spot on! Enjoyed the new Mixed Chat and Dahi Vada yesterday. The only downside is that customers need to be less messy at the tables and clean up after themselves. The staff too need to be more vigilant and clean after every occupancy. The tables, chairs, surroundings had remnants of previous meals on them. All in all, a good visit...Hope it remains that way! read more

They also carry their own line of spices, sauces, nuts, etc. As a Viet/Chinese shopper, i especially appreciate the Rani's items that include ingredients and directions on how to prepare items such as butter chicken or mango lassi! There is a new cashier lady name "Batul" who was very rude and insulted customers. The worker was arrogant and bring an attitude from her country. I have been to Rani's for years and enrolled as a member but not planning to shop here any longer. The customer service has been very poor lately. Taking my business to Rani's competitors who are nearby. Please do not enroll in membership because you will not see the discounts on your receipt paid. It is just a gimmick. The store has variety of South Asian grocery items. However, the fresh vegetables selection are very limited and not always fresh. The Indian fastfood is good for quick sit-in vegetarian meal but lately with limited menu. The store could be organized better. Used to be greeted with beautiful smiles now it's all scowls. Can't dance or enjoy Bollywood music. Tried to take a photo to see which product my friend wanted me to pick up for her. I am never let down when I come to Rani's. Normally, I probably would have complained about the seating area or the ambiance of the actual place itself, but then I remind myself that I'm not eating at a 5 star restaurant. For a cafe that is attached to a Indian market, they've done a good job in maintaining the restaurant. Tables are usually clean, food is exceptionally great, and service is good. Portion sizes are good for the price they are charging. I love eating the Papdi Chaat or the Samosa Chaat. read more

Rani's is listed on vrg.org as a vegetarian restaurant with vegan options and I'm always on the lookout for places that serve good vegan options. Although my comfort zone is inside the loop, Rani's made for an interesting field trip on a lazy Sunday afternoon. My first impression was that the place is much smaller than it appears on the website. The restaurant is in an open corner of an Indian market, and it consists of small two top tables pushed together in pairs that could probably accommodate up to 30 people in a pinch. There's a steam table with 8 hot choices that include sag paneer, daal, rice, fried cauliflower, curried chickpeas, etc. There's a large selection of sweets and other stuff for sale that might as easily be purchased at the market register as at the cafe register. A customer was being served when I arrived, and the woman behind the counter seemed to avoid eye contact for a long time after it looked like the purchase had been completed. She glanced and then came over a couple minutes after I rang the "ring bell for service" labeled doorbell. I was one of very few non-Indians in the place, and being different here was definitely palpable. There were several items that I wanted to try on the steam table but no simple way to get exactly what I wanted. I ended up getting a tray with five options of my choosing (one larger, probably intended for rice) three medium, and one small for $10. This included a fresh baked garlic naan that came out about five minutes later, and all you can drink chai tea in styrofoam cups. The food was tasty. It was better before it cooled down, but for an Indian buffet in Houston, unremarkable. It was basically no better or worse than the average Indian restaurants in the Hillcroft corridor, but twice as far away for me. I doubt that I'll be back, unless I happen to be in the neighborhood. It's just not worth the drive for me with so many comparable options that are far more convenient. The attached market feels like India, (how the heck would I know that, I've never been to India!) so the trip out to this part of town might make for a fun adventure. read more

This is a very nice ethnic grocery store, think Trader Joe's, but for Indian/Pakistani type foods. It is located in a very unusual spot of course, but still fairly convenient. I ended up purchasing a few basic items like curry powder and naan. My main reason for going was to search for fresh goat meat. Not only do they not have a meat section, they're actually a vegetarian grocery store. I didn't see any signs indicating this, so I asked about a meat section and sure enough they looked at me funny. Tried a few items Dhokla - I haven't eaten a lot of dhokla but the taste was exceptional according to me..4.5 out of 5. Samosa chaat - I give 3.5 out of 5. Quite good but i have tasted better before Pav bhaji - 2.5 out of 5.. don't have much to add Thali- very good 4 out of 5. The paneer sabji and daal were tasty. Naan was good too. Never ordering again. The food was old and it was cold and tasteless. I have eaten with them before but the quality of the food has gone down. The chutney was watery and had no taste. The sandbar was cold watery and bland and the dosa was fried in old oil. Not to mention the fact that it was delivered by a guy who was a heavy smoker and so the bag smelled like cigarettes. Extremely confusing and disorganized, I felt unwelcome upon entering because people were glaring at me from the parking lot...Weird. I ordered the paneer wrap to go, cashier asked "cash or card?" I asked, "Does it matter?" and she didn't answer me. So I decided on card (big mistake!!) and she said I had to pay "over there" and gave me a ticket. So I went "over there" (to the grocery checkout), to the only check out girl. There were 2 people ahead of me, and the girl had to restart the computer. So I waited maybe 10 min. The line was really piling up I felt bad for her because no one was there to help or open a new register. She was really sweet, and you could tell she was getting anxious about the long line. She swiped my card on a square at least 4x.. I asked her how I'll know when my food is ready (as they never asked my name or gave me a number) and she didn't answer me. So I stood over where I ordered and saw my food just sitting there while the cashier who took my order completely ignored me... Keep in mind I've already been here ~20 minutes at this point. I only went here to grab a quick lunch! I caught a cook's attention and he tried to bag it up himself as the cashier was unavailable. I appreciated him expediting it, as it clearly wasn't his job because he wasn't sure what sauces, etc to give me. So of course I left very frustrated and once I made it back to the office, I wasn't thrilled about the paneer wrap. I was craving the creamy spinach paneer but ended up with chunky cheese. I guess I ordered the wrong thing. It's a cool place, and they have international items. I looked around the grocery side and thought about buying my stepdad from the UK something. Customer service was great to me! They helped me tremendously with my henna products sought after. When I arrived I was semi confused only because it's a foreign market and everything In the market was different... Ohhh, I love different things of he world! I walked through and found he aisle I was looking for which was health, beauty, etc. I was so open to learning about all these different henna products and oils that you can use for your hair or body. I purchased the henna amongst other products and I will be back and make sure I bring my dear Father In law because him and I would spend hours on end in this spot! I'm no expert on Indian food but the food I've had here has been tasty. The different dishes I've had were all quite heavy though so be sure to be hungry if you eat here. The daily special is good for people like me who don't have much of a clue about Indian food because you can get a variety. The garlic naan was really good. The gobi paratha was something I had never had before and enjoyed, but I'll try another flavor next time. The Samosa was big and tasted good. My husband particularly like this but he does not like curry at all. While you wait for you food they have free chai tea which was nice to sit and sip on while waiting. It took a long time for our food to get ready. We did order for 5 adults. The grocery part of the store seems a bit unorganized and dusty. The produce section did not impress me at all because it seemed like the vegetables had been sitting around longer than they should. The counter service at the kitchen was not favorable. I was on the fence about rating Rani's 2 stars because the service wasn't that great but the food did taste pretty good. read more

There's nothing really special about this place, the staff is very unprofessional, most of the items are not properly labeled and even if they are they are quite expensive when I compared them with other grocery stores. We went to buy a skewer from them which was clearly not stainless steel but we were charged more than $20 for them when in fact they should not have been more than $6.99. There's not a lot of stuff over here even on weekends when it is quite packed. One good thing about them is that they have free Wi-Fi over there so while you're waiting in the huge line you could play games or something. read more

Some of our Indian friends recommended this store when we asked them about where we can find nice Indian store in North Houston. We where looking for Turmeric power glad we found it this store.
