Great little spot out here. I stppped by just passing through town and figured I would check it out. Seems like the coffee, ice cream and pastries are the forefront. Tried a cupcake. Very good. Service is always outstanding. The cappuccino is one of the best in Southeast Texas, and I'm addicted to their blueberry muffins.

You have to stop here! Everything looked so tempting. Do not go in hungry you will never be able to decide. We had the blueberry muffin and the apple cream cheese muffin. Yesterday, I bought a variety of muffins from Rao's bakery, Port Arthur. I ordered banana nut, pecan cream, and strawberry cream. They are Fantastic, and Very Moist. Rao's puts Starbucks to SHAME! So many yummy looking desserts, wasn't sure what to choose from! My husband and I each got a cupcake to enjoy (one carrot cake and one chocolate fudge), they were both tasty! I got two small chocolate covered cheesecakes with fruit to bring home, they were both beautiful in appearance, however one was definitely tastier than the other. Would go back again! Visiting Mid County this month, I needed to get some work accomplished and returned to a favorite place, Rao's Bakery & Coffee Cafe. I have been a Rao's lover my whole life, and I really like this Nederland location. It has the same Italian nostalgia vibe as the Beaumont locations, and the quality of ingredients are the same. I first enjoyed a tasty vanilla latte. I did wish for a bit bolder espresso flavor in the coffee itself, or perhaps a little less vanilla syrup because it tasted a bit too sugary. I also think it would be great for the in-house lattes or coffees to have washable cups rather than to-go cups. They may have these, but I was not offered one even when I said I wanted it for "here." When I visited, the wifi was down, but I called in advance to ask about wifi, and they told me it was out. That was fine for my needs because it allowed me to get work accomplished and get myself OFF social media for a few hours. But sometimes having wifi is a make-or-break for me, so it would be good if they repaired it. Also, you truly cannot go wrong with anything from the bakery. I had my favorite iced sugar cookie, and it was amazing as always. I love their Italian cream cake, red velvet cake, and of course, the king's cake. They also have a great gelato display if you are wanting something cool. The other thing I loved about my recent visit was the eclectic mix of people Rao's invites. Some people were clearly on a first date, others were with their children, others with friends, others working or reading alone, etc. It has a great vibe and plenty of space to spread out. Rao's is not the standard on which it should be based on how it originated. This place is the most abusive I've ever come across in the restaurant business! Mean girls preying on good people and no one stops it! The most obnoxious tart they have comes in the form of a girl named Lauren, whom works upfront with customers! Over hearing her conversation or her interactions with colleagues or coworkers is rude and foul, harassment at its finest. This girl needs a swift exits, she's not a team player or people person. I witnessed managers behaviors towards employees whether rude in the way they speak to certain people or playing favorites with others! That's not all, my second trip in same girl was working and same thing was happening. Now on to the food and drink portion, the amount of money spent on desserts should equal the amount of quality put in them, and it just isn't there. Lack luster or plain or more so flavorless, or it's jam packed like crack in the food full of sugar not enough fresh or flavor. With a variety or desserts or food, items shouldn't be dry or plain in flavor depending on parts of the day. Evenings are flavorless 3pm-until. Daytime service 7am-230/3pm is pretty good. I have to say, service is a part of the experience over all of this place because it makes you want to come back. Too many times over a course of time I've received different service but when it's bad it's horrible but when it's good it's great. I got incredible service from a female, I suppose Caucasian/Hawaiian, Leilani had with customers despite the environment/work conditions, all the people ahead of me all walked away happy. My new go-to coffee spot!! I'm new to the area and Rao's was recommended by a friend. I went this morning and ordered a Snickers Latte and a Bacon, egg and cheese croissant. The Latte was delicious!! There was some egg shell fragments in my Croissant but they apologized and immediately replaced with a spectacular cream cheese pecan muffin. The croissant was equally as delicious and tbh I'm not even mad about the egg shells bc that means it's fresh, from scratch and made to order. While visiting my friend's family in the area we were told that we needed to try a few different things while we were in the area--and I wish that we could have tried more than a few. We already have plans of trying a few other things the next time we are in town! The family we were visiting tries to make sure that they go to Rao's at least once a month for breakfast and I can tell why. Everything looks so good! We tried (andddd shared) slices of the Sicilian cheesecake, a pineapple cake, and the chocolate dobash cake. Shoot dang! Thankfully, each of our favorites were different so after initially sharing and sampling we go to dig into whichever we had preferred. I also, like I do in most coffee shops, tried the vanilla chai tea latte. It is amazing to look inside the café. There are coffee cups to coffee grinds for sale and almost every dessert you can dream of. It's definitely an experience. It was hard to walk away from their gelato but I needed real food so a panini was what I got. The cashier I had was very friendly. She had only been there two month she told me but her customer service was at a managerial. The two other staff members did not smile or have a welcoming vibe so just a reminder that this helps make a difference whether or not you are personally waiting on someone. The panini took VERY long for her to warm and she did mine in the back but there was a working one in the front so I wasn't sure what that was about but the taste of the panini was just OK. The chicken was ehh but the focaccia bread coupled with the melted provolone on it was amazing -- I honestly could have eaten just that LOL. I got fruit on the side ---which their displayed menu read to be $10.50 but I was charged $10.90 BEFORE tax. The cashier told me the owners came in and updated their registers and marked everything 10 cents higher. Obviously, my discrepancy was more than 10 cents higher, but I didnt make a fuss about it --but this is a reminder to all owners that any false advertisement -- especially when it comes to the price of things is a big NO-NO. We are in COVID times and customers are pinching pennies to eat at your restaurants, as it is! You can see the kitchen through their small window and I witnessed a woman cooking back there with her mask hanging off below her chin. That is NOT Ok. Overall, I will try this place again, given masks are worn 100% of the time. When you go here, just remember items are several cents higher than what they have displayed -- but HOPEFULLY that will be updated before you get there! Oh! The parking lot is a small and packed one (as it's in a complex where there are many other businesses), so keep looking for a spot but know there is a drive thru so yay -- just do that! Valentine's Day and King Cakes are some of the great things that they have here ... and they will make your cravings force you to come back. I have ordered many King Cakes from many places, but by far the Strawberry Creme ones from here are truly savory and good. For good gooey measure we order ours "extra creamy" and they are just as you like. We also ordered a specialty Valentines Day cake and it was spot on cute and tasty and everything you want from a local bakery. Overall the young ladies and staff were great during my visit. I was passing through on my way back to Austin and they had my orders ready. I noticed casual coffee diners and on-the-go breakfast types stopping in and enjoying the day while I was here. We used to go to Rao's and split a dessert. We went today and waited at the counter to order a dessert. No one ever came and waited on us. Two people came in after us and were waited on on right away. We were so disappointed because they used to be so good and attentive to customers. We used to make the drive to Rao's in Beaumont and share a dessert on Friday or Saturday nights. Before the Mid-County location opened. The staff was so friendly and polite. The person that waited on us was named Jake. Jake used to make suggestions, and he knew how to treat customers. I'm not saying we will never return, but it won't be anytime soon.
