It was supposed to be a romantic night but they seated us at a terrible table tucked away and isolated and the waitstaff was disorganized and kept asking us questions and not delivering when we answered. At one point they gave us dessert menus, then took them away without taking our order. The heat lamp we were seated at didn't work and it took numerous queries before they told us and finally gave us an answer as to why and offered us blankets instead. The food was just ok with no real high notes, though the strawberry gazpacho was interesting, the pasta was bland, and the artichoke was just ok. Most disappointing dining experience in Rome. Food was mediocre, at best... the pizza has so much sauce that all the cheese/toppings slid off leaving a soggy limp base. Honestly, how do you even make bad pizza? The risotto was gelatinous and lacked flavor. The whole grain bread was chalky. The service was poor- waited so long for our wine we had to ask for it again, the waiter got one of our items completely wrong (despite pointing to the item on the menu while ordering), was not checked on after mains arrived, and when the check came had to point out that to staff that the item that was incorrect/sent back but was still on the bill and they tried to charge us for it. Despite the Michelin star and rooftop location the atmosphere was spoiled by the aggressive seagulls (attacked twice), the bugs in our drinks/food, and the disgusting cigar smoke from the smoking area below us (where we were sat with our children), and the complete lack of cleanliness in the bathroom (discarded dirty towel next to the sink for hours- from 6:35pm-9:00pm, and trash all over the bathroom floor). When I asked to speak to a manager about my concerns there was no one available and they said they could not/would not helped me. Complete waste of money. Would not recommend to anyone. I used to work in the service industry and I had better service (and food) today from a tiny unknown cafe in an alley. read more

I took my sister here to celebrate her birthday on our last night in Roma. They made her feel so special. I would recommend this roof top for any special occasion. The view is stunning! As a centrally located Rome hotel, this place is pretty great in all categories. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty. Raphael is under the Relais & Chateaux fellowship of restaurants and hotels. I've had nothing but good experiences when staying and dining at these properties and will seek them out in the future. Location: Right off of Piazza Navona but even with our room on the busier side of the alley right behind the square, we couldn't hear a thing throughout the night. There are plenty of restaurants right outside the hotel. Everything is within a 10-25 minute walk. We easily walked to the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Coliseum and Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Camp di' Fiore and other squares are within an easy walking distance as well. The Hotel: beautiful and elegant main/public rooms. I would best describe it as old world meets clean and modern. Lots of comfortable areas to sit in the main foyer and throughout. Really nice fitness room and internet access with a printer in the basement. The lounge and restaurant on the terrace had amazing views of all of Rome and the Vatican. I'm not sure a lot of people know about the rooftop terrace but it might just have the best views in Rome. The Room: on the smaller side (compared with North American standards) but spacious enough for a few nights stay. The air conditioning was very welcome and ran on the cooler side (as compared to a lot of lackluster European units). This was much appreciated on hot August afternoons! We were welcomed with a really nice plate of canapes, fruit bowl and bottled water. I could never figure out how the privacy light worked but were never bothered by anyone. The Staff: Fantastic! Hotel Raphael clearly knows how to treat guests with discerning tastes... I'm not a snob and don't ever expect people to cater to me but this hotel does an amazing job of making their guests feel very welcome and special. Every member of the staff went out of their way to help us with maps, recommendations, taxi calls, etc. The Restaurant: we made reservations and ate at their primarily vegetarian restaurant on our last night. Great service and some really interesting dishes. I was so-so on the vegetarian concept at first but the creative food made up for it! We had an incredible vegetable fritto misto, risotto, and cheese ravioli. Yes, it is on the pricier side. Wear something nice. A couple was turned away when the girl showed up wearing a pair of trashy jean cut offs. I can appreciate a staff that tries to keep it classy. I would without a doubt recommend this hotel. In fact, I'll probably stay here again when I take my parents to Rome in a couple years (which should be interesting to say the very least). Very good meal at the restaurant, the onion soup is soft and not salty which is a interesting twist, plus it has a wonderful braised pure soup consistency. They also serve wonderful bread, the walnut and olive bread is so good with the olive oil. The view as you watch the sunset superb. Staff is clean cut and they also rephil your drinks. Make sure to sit outside. Deserts are a little bland not that tasteful but everyone has different taste. Expensive so make sure your ready to pay a certain bill. Plus if you are super hungry don't go to this restaurant, they have portions that are super small medium. read more

Now this is five star accommodations. We were greeted ya the door, asked to sit in the lobby while they sorted our check in documents and asked if we wanted any coffee or drinks. We were on our way to the Vatican. So, they said they would take our bags while we were touristing around Rome. We left and came back around lunch. The room still wasn't ready so we said we'd go get lunch. Upon returning, the manager saw us to our upgraded, beautifully appointed room and showed us around the particulars (automatic windows, adjustable bed, etc). Our room is modern and beautiful. An absolute highlight on our one week trip to Rome was visiting Raphaëls restaurant Mater Terrae. We were served a 5-course dinner and each dish felt like a culinary adventure reflecting the local cuisine with a vegetarian twist. We had the pleasure of being served by the 2. chef I sadly can't remember his name, however, he and his expert team did an amazing job with the menu. I look forward to coming back to Rome and see what head chef Ettore Moliteo has created next. Our waiter Davide, was an absolute blast, his enthusiasm to provide the very best service made our night fun, relaxing and extremely joyful. His waitering style was quite different from what I am used to from Scandinavian fine dining. It was very relaxing, caring and calm while still being very professional. Our dinner began very late and while the restaurant had to close we were allowed to stay with a bottle of wine and lock our self out... Which meant we were there until 3 am and could enjoy the amazing view the entire night. A perfect hotel to stay at in Roma! The room was either new or newly renovated: large bathroom with a two shower head shower, two sinks, and a decent size tub. My boyfriend and I really appreciated the "little touches," i.e. A shoe kit in the closet, as recently my boyfriend was complaining about not having a shoe horn in hotels. The bed was comfy and each side had a remote to adjust the head and foot of the bed. This hotel is extremely clean and the maids are wonderful. 90% of service was great--only the terrace servers were slow and a bit snooty, so I will review the terrace restaurant separately. Additionally, the included breakfast was quite exceptional (see pictures that I've posted) with the best coffee we had in Italy! However, this breakfast is not ideal for one with a nut allergy, a lot of cross contamination red flags. read more

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Raphael Hotel and enjoyed our stay very much. This is not a cookie cutter chain hotel but instead a smaller cozy boutique hotel. Our room was small but tastefully decorated and very comfortable. The location is ideal for walking to The Colosseum, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and several restaurants. Extraordinary hotel! The location is just incredible. You are just steps from the Piazza Navona, but a block away on a very quiet side street so you get almost none of the noisy foot traffic from the area. The building itself is a beautiful picturesque ivy-covered building that many people walking by stop to take pictures of. The staff at the front desk are always friendly and helpful (though the concierge recommended restaurants are a little hit or miss). Most of the staff speak MANY languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish, and German). My family stays here almost every time we are in Rome. It has everything. The rooms themselves are gorgeous. Small but incredibly luxurious. The beds feel like memory foam with memory foam pillows and are some of the most comfortable hotel beds I've slept on. The toiletries are Bulgari and smell great. The details in the room are top notch, from intricate wood inlay furniture to electronic curtains you can control from a switch next to your bed (note: there are no USB chargers). Also the water in the rooms gets plenty hot enough, no tepid showers here! In the suites the furniture is more modern but equally comfortable, with the bathroom being a section with frosted glass to allow for tons of natural light while you enjoy your separate marble soaking tub or his and hers sinks. The only downside of the hotel is the price, but you get what you pay for here. At least the wifi is free throughout the hotel (not limited to just your room). read more

The Raphael Roof Top Bar was such a disappointment. The place was nice enough and we were certainly okay with the €12 per beer, but the service was atrocious. It took a bit for the drinks to be delivered and even longer for us to get the check. All the while, no one came by to check on us to ask if we were okay or if we wanted to order another drink. There was an error on our bill which took even longer to correct. I would save your € and have a drink somewhere else. read more

When we arrived in Rome we were dying for drinks. Of course we google searches most fun bars in Rome. The #1 ranked bar was the Raphael. While it was nice do not be tricked by the rankings. It is a wonderful quiet rooftop drinking area, however the drinking setting seems almost to professional and like you're supposed to eat a 5 course meal not enjoy their lovely cocktails. Hotel Raphael 700€ for one of our rooms, 500€ for the other in June 2016.  A very pleasant *****L hotel located 200 feet from Piazza Navona.   I can only give the five star "L" Hotel Raphael a mixed review.  The front desk people are lovely and helpful, "Sarah" was a standout -- super friendly & efficient booking my dinner reservations each night. The exterior of the hotel is ancient and traditional, the interior is mostly modern.  They have spent a ton on the rooms, which have pale wood, hardwood floors and carpet around the bed, warm colored plaster, and stainless steel refrigerator style handles on the doors.  The bed is a fancy tempur model, the bathrooms are modern and very clean.  The TV on the other hand is a poorly chosen, but is an obviously expensive Bang and Olufsen -- the picture was kind of blurry, too small, and a real pain to get working in English.  The user manual did not match the remote control, and you couldn't see the tv from the bed -- an inexpensive Sony/Samsung would have been much nicer.  The room has far too few receptacles for recharging phones and iPads - a big oversight for a recently renovated room, and a pain.  There is no coffee in the room, only tea (who drinks tea in Italy?) -- again a wacky disappointment -- a Nespresso unit would have been very welcome.  The more expensive room only had one tiny closet, almost no drawers, and only one sink -- the layout was nice looking, but lacking in common sense functionality. We had two connecting rooms, and the anteroom had a Siemens security camera that pointed into my room -- although it "looked like" it was off, it was still creepy.  The Siemens card key system was a complete mess, it used chips not magnetic stripes, but we still had to have the cards reprogrammed most days. The turndown service happened in mid afternoon most days, so you would come home hours before sunset to find windows with the shades drawn and melted ice in the ice bucket -- the shades are motorized and take minutes to open.  The room and bath was always very clean, but other 5*L hotels do the turndown in the evening when we are out at dinner, which is much nicer. The restaurant on the roof was a disappointment, it is vegetarian so we skipped it for dining, and the one time we tried it for drinks the head waiter was very reluctant to let us sit outside, he wanted to put us inside in a slightly dismal and completely empty bar.  He probably had his reasons, but he should have politely explained them -- starting off with a curt "no" is "amateur hour" service. The breakfast was ok, I have stayed at many Relais and Chateaux 5*L hotels, and the breakfast at Raphael is flat out sub-par.  Parts are fancy (an orange juice squeezing machine), parts are cheap - small assortment of cold cheeses and meats, and no smoked fish.  The pasteries were poorly stocked, and only ok.  My son: "The pastries were bland, and they were always out of the "pan au chocolate", the cheeses were all the same and boring, and the eggs were bad." The hot meats were only ok (vegetarian chef?) They made great cappuccinos and refills were delivered lightning quick. The room has a basement vibe with generic extruded metal frame hotel chairs.  The head waiter insisted twice on putting us at a table for 4 in a tight alcove - if I had been the first to arrive, I would have insisted on taking one of the dozen empty nicer tables near windows.  Even though we had pre-paid for the breakfasts, most mornings we skipped it and went out to eat. It was a nice hotel, with very nice front desk staff, but we would probably go back to the Hassler next time. read more
