I read so many good things about this place so I was super disappointed by the experience. First of all, we walked in and the place was full of smoke. Started with oysters which were extremely gritty- was pulling a lot of pieces of shell out of my mouth which is obviously not a good time. Octopus was very weird and overcooked. The scallops were so salty and also overcooked. We also tried the lobster salad which was super disappointing- overwhelmingly tastes like mayonnaise. The service was good and that is why I would give it two stars instead of one. I would never come back and think it's either incredibly overhyped or we ordered all of the wrong things. Unfortunately, the A/C was broken this day so the inside was very warm. Food was good not great & a little pricey. Service was very good. Arrived to Rappahannock Restraunt at about 6:30 on Saturday night. My parents and I were trying to kill some time before the Louis C.K. comedy show and this restraunt was about a block away from the theater. We did not have a reservations, although if you plan to sit and have dinner I would highly suggest it because it was pack and the ambiance of the place was rather fancy. Luckily we landed 3 seats at the bar. Their bar area was nice, right in the dead center of the restraunt and was square shaped with each corner of the bar jetting out into a circular type bar table, it was nice. We ordered some drinks, I had two beers -blood orange IPA- not sure of the brewery because it was suggested to me when they did not have the beer that I wanted but it was amazing.. I want to say Viel Brewing but I am really not sure. My parents both had bloody Marys. PSA- *the bar does not carry any domestic beers.* We had ordered a dozen salt water oysters and the billy bread appetizer because we were worried about how long the kitchen would take. Both of the apps came out with in ten minutes and they were great! The sauce that they bring with the oysters is fantastic, not sure what it was though. I would come back to this restraunt again to try out a dinner entree, unfortunately we just did not have time for that this time! between three beers, 3 bloody Marys, a dozen oysters, and bread our check came out to be about $100 which is interesting. Go for happy hour if you love oysters and clams . We got 3 dozen oysters and a dozen clams to start. All were excellent! Old fashioned $6 at happy hour...a little over sweet but very good. No crackers with oysters :/ Bartender forgot to put in the clams... Mignonette unique with a touch of soy in the background. Modern and rustic atmosphere featuring french themed food. Partner had paella and was disappointed for the amount of seafood considering the price. Same could be said for the bouridde. Which was good but not great. The poached egg was the best part but it also lacked content for the price. A couple of oysters and a few small chunks of fish. Good flavor. All In all a solid place. This is a nice concept, on paper at least, put together by a company that is based in the wholesaling of fresh oysters and other seafood. The interior setup is the bare walls, open ceiling concept that looks and feels cool, but is almost always noisy, and it is much so here. Unfortunately, the food simply did not deliver the quality the cost suggested should be there, and in a number of ways, this restaurant seems to be trying too hard to be cool, to be now! For example, they have NO domestic beers on their very short list of beers, and the list of available vodkas was tiny as well, and the only ones I even recognized was Tivo (it sucks) and Smirnoff (hardly a premium choice). We ordered Wood-Grilled Octopus, Escargot, a dozen Old Salty Oysters on the half shell, the whole Branzino, Seafood Paella, and finished with a Chocolate Tort. The Octopus and the Escargot came out first, and it was over 15 minutes before the oysters made their appearance. The Octopus ($14) was plated with charred watermelon, espelette (a pepper from the Basque Region of France), fergula sardo ( a round, toasted pasta from Sardinia), summer beans (basically green beans), romesco sauce, and bits of almond. This is a busy dish, perhaps too busy because neither the tastes nor the textures came together, but rather were in conflict. The smoked flavor in the octopus overpowered the taste, as well. The Escargot ($11) also was a bit off. While the snails were tender, there was way too much bread crumbs on them, giving them a gritty texture. The restaurant offers oysters from three areas - the Rappahannock River, and area further down the estuary (Tangier Island, maybe), and from the Chincoteague area. The Old Salty Oysters ($13.56) we ordered were from the Chincoteague area, and were just too salty, that was all you tasted. The Branzino ($34), also called the European Seabass or the Mediterranean Seabass, is a great tasting fish, with white flesh that is almost sweet. The smokiness from the cooking process detracted a little from the taste, but overall this was an excellent dish, and the fish a very nice size. It was served with coconut curry basmati rice, braised kale, shishito sauce, pickled kolrabi, and marcona almonds - and everything was very good, especially the pickled kolrabi. The Seafood Paella ($32) contained mussels, shrimp, clams, and Merguez Sausage sitting on top of Calasparra Rice and Piquillo Peppers, and Sugo (sauce) was added to the rice. This was far from a classic paella, the sauce made the rice very wet, more like a stew. The clams, mussels, and sausage were tasty, but the shrimp was overcooked and tough, and if there was any tomato in the dish, it eluded my taste buds. Would not reorder this dish. The Chocolate Tort ($10), accompanied by a nice glass of Passito Wine ($9). All in all, this was more than a bit of a disappointment as very little really met our expectations, except the whole Brazino. The service was generally good, but everything was a little on the slow side, and the place is loud when full. Don't see a return visit. read more

--This review is just based on their raw items-- I have been super excited to try Rappahannock ever since I tried some of their oysters while they were sampling them at Ellwood Thompson. I thought they were so flavorful and had the perfect amount of brininess. I couldn't stop thinking about how sweet and buttery their Rappahannock oysters were. --Oysters-- $2 each I came here with a small group of fellow oyster lovers and we ordered some from each of the 4 types they had that night [Rappahannock, Witch Ducks, Olde Salts--the 4th name I don't remember]. The $2/oyster is a fair and standard price. They were on the small size, which is okay if they make up for it in taste. These unfortunately did not. For example, their namesake oyster was not as buttery and sweet as the ones I tried before. Overall, the flavor of the oysters was pretty standard and a little muddled in my opinion. I don't know if it's just a bad time for oysters in general, but I just wasn't impressed since I have tasted these oysters before. --Clams-- $1.50 each I personally like the aftertastes that raw clams have so I really enjoyed them. They had a firm texture which was a nice contrast to all the oysters. --Service-- Our waitress was quick, attentive, pleasant, and explained the menu items very well. I also liked how they arranged their oysters in order of saltiness. Overall, I spent over $50 on just raw items and left unsatisfied. National geographic recommended it as one of the best places to eat in Richmond so we had to try it out. Great decor, very rustic, centered around a huge bar and diverse cocktail menu. I had the mescal old fashioned, very we done with the right amount of smokiness. For dinner, we tried the baked oysters, great flavor but needed a bit more salt. The whole grilled fish was an amazing branzino with just the right amount of char. I was hesitant about the raisins and and almonds but they really added a nice crunch and sweetness that brought the whole dish together. My date had the pork belly, which was fantastic but the Ho cake didn't add much and the texture distracted from the flavor. Once pushed aside though, the whole dish was really well done. I recently dined at Rappahannock restaurant and was disappointed with my experience. The paella was not up to par, with a white sauce that overwhelmed the dish and lacked the traditional flavor. Additionally, the price was steep for such a subpar dish. The scallops were only okay and also not worth the price. The cheese plate was also lacking, as bread was not included and had to be purchased separately, which is uncommon for most expensive restaurants who typically offer complimentary bread. Overall, I would recommend trying Rappahannock once, but it is not a restaurant I would choose to visit again. My wife told them it was my birthday and it's like that flew in one ear and out the other. I came here with a few classmates for lunch when we had a long break before a workshop. We made the trek over from campus through the bitter cold, but it was worth it! Rappahannock is a fairly new restaurant, and has an interesting dock/ship feel inside. The suspended wooden square above the bar stood out to me in particular. Our waitress was super fun and friendly, and gladly explained to use the many kinds of oysters available as well as the various preparations. Each person in our party ended up ordering at least one oyster to try. I also ordered a chowder to start and a fish brandade as my main entree. The soup was super warm and delicious, although a tad salty for me. The brandade was quite interesting, as it was the first brandade I had ever had. The brandade was tasty but a bit rich and also a bit salty for me. The portion was also moderate in size. Prices here are slightly pricey, but the quality of the food is excellent. Very cute place with great service. The food, though, was subpar. My ceviche was tasty although borderline mushy, so it seemed like it had been made maybe even a day in advance. Some bites were quite sour and off. The octopus had cold bites, while the potatoes that accompanied it were hot. It was definitely not made to order. Wow. My wife and I was/were/still are in awe. As a #rva native I've been to Rappahannock before for a drink...or an oyster or two but never really sat down and ate dinner there. What was I thinking?!? I'll start with the obvious...I had a half dozen of my favorite oysters in the world the 'olde salts' and another half dozen oysters topped with caviar. Decadence, and oyster perfection is all I can say here. The only negative thing I can say is I prefer Texas Pete hot sauce versus what they had, but that's just me nit picking. For the entrees my wife ordered the Seafood Paella, and I simply ordered the octopus appetizer since I had overdosed on oysters. When the seafood paella came it was a thing of beauty. Clams, mussels, and shrimp falling over the perfectly crisped rice. Every component was cooked perfectly, and seasoned perfectly. The rice was phenomenal. Nice crispy edges, tons of flavor. My octopus was cooked to perfection. Chargrilled, but not too heavily. Octopus is something that is often overcooked, but not here. We also had a few drinks, all were good...except the Oyster Back...but again, this is more me. I tried it with the Ostervit...i absolutely love picklebacks so the oyster topped with pickle juice were good...but I'm not a fan of the Ostervit. It was something I had never had before, so I figured I try it. Again...this is nothing against the restaurant. I was shocked when the waitress came and told me they removed it from my bill. I told her that it was something that I didn't care for...not that the bartender did anything wrong...she simply said don't worry about it, we aim to please. Needless to say service the entire night was top notch. Pleasant and she was very knowledgeable about the menu. And lastly, we rarely eat dessert. But when I saw the menu and saw they had gelati celesti ice cream on top of a peach and blueberry cobbler, I had no choice. It was fantastic. Beautiful crisp crust and awesome filling. Overall. I have eaten here every Wednesday for over a year. I always have two orders of the oysters and pearls. Went yesterday and the recipe had changed they had added some weird bitter tasting alcohol to the oysters. This overpowered both the oysters and the trout roe. It was awful. They took a winner and changed it to a loser. I asked for the manager, Patrick. He didn't come out. I will call every week to see if they change it back. I will not return until they do. read more

There were at least 14 other people, also with reservations, waiting. We finally left at 9:25, as there were still folks with 8:45 reservations waiting. The next day, I called to speak to a manager. Neither were immediately available, and so a member of the staff took my number and told me one would call me that afternoon. No one ever reached out. Richmond has many great restaurants, and I would strongly discourage anyone from trying to eat here. It is run under awful management. read more

I came in here on a Sunday afternoon to an empty bar and partially empty restaurant...no complaints here. I was delighted to be told by the bartender that they have a happy hour that featured 1/2 off their raw oysters (normally $2.25 each) and clams. I decided on a Rappahannock (obviously), Olde Salts and a Barcat. The Rappahannock was very mild, great for someone who is new to oysters. This is the kind that I could find at an oyster festival and throw down a few dozen with no problem. The Olde Salt is like tasting the ocean, very salty I would only be able to eat a few of these. The Barcat was perfection, a great balance of salt and sweetness. The environment here was upscale but relaxed. I walked in with a tank top, shorts and converses and felt very comfortable and not out of place. The prices of everything also seemed very reasonable for the area, I would love to come back to try their dinner options. read more

I recently visited my first 2 star Michelin restaurant this summer in London. All I have to say is Rappahannock's food was more memorable. If Richmond gets a visit from Michelin voters, this place has to be considered. Everyone's meal was fabulous. I had the ceviche small plate to start made with fresh fish. It came with homemade yuca chips that were amazing. For the main meal I had the whole grilled branzino. I cannot tell you what a huge branzino fan I am. When I saw this option, there was no other choice for me. It came with herbed rice, raisins, smoked shallot, an almond salsa, and kale as the accompaniments. The fish was grilled perfectly and was so full of sweet meat. Every one of the sides were perfectly cooked and married so well with the fish. You can tell a lot of thought went into the preparation. Additionally, the restaurant had the fresh wood grill smell and an open kitchen. Just ask and you can go take a look! The wood was stacked right off to the side. Nice touch. I wish they would have some seating at the kitchen so you could watch the meals being made. Us foodies would love that! The staff was amazing and they knew everything about the meals and each ingredient. To me, that is so important for someone who loves food like I do. That shows how much the restaurant cares about their meals and the planning that goes into the food. For dessert I had the dark chocolate tart with an almond paste. It was so delicious. Again, the attention to detail...Even the coffee, in addition to some really good roasters for their beans, they served it in a ceramic French press. Those details again show the attention to detail. If I am going to be super picky, strictly to round out the experience for Michelin voting, I would not use the cheap paper towels in the bathroom. Lol. Right :) that is the only thing I can find that I would change about this place. Top notch and deserving of some awards. Food was very good but service was atrocious and spoiled our meal. We went for happy hour and were told that happy hour was only at the bar. My sister is disabled and could not sit at the bar. I ate here last year for my birthday. I wanted to revisit it as the kickoff to a long road trip this season. November 1. Paella. Mood lighting. Spicy ginger ale. What could be cosier right? Sometimes restaurant experience is low because our expectations are too high or staff has an off night. I've been to dives over and over just because it reminds me of something I like. I went back to Rappahanock because it reminded me of something lovely. 5 minutes before service started at 5 pm. 17:55. I was told to wait outside (or at the bar). Nice right? Ok. I'll take the bar thanks. 4 bartenders ask me what I want. Awesome! Immutable waiting for a few more minutes ... how about a ginger ale? Along with it a dinner menu. Not a busy night. 4+ bartenders. And no one speaks to me for another 25 minutes. I decide to ask for a table finally. After the first half of specials menu oration by waiter 1, waiter 2 interrupts. "This is my table" or something like that. She was very after getting through the specials menu a second time. All this to say that the start was not good. My paella was $40. I sort of have come to expect the Four Season at this price point. But it's clearly dead of winter. And everything feels frozen over. The paella wasn't worth even half that. Not fresh. I'd had enough. Try paying with cash. I didn't. Two credit cards and 4 errors. One finally goes through. This is the start of my trip and I'd given myself a big budget. And prepared so I knew this wasn't my error. I wasn't embarrassed but this should have been more embarrassing for the restaurant. I finally leave. And the next day I find out I've been billed twice for the same check. It doesn't drop off. Still on my credit card. It's been 1 month. 30 days. 12 phone calls to the restaurant. I'd reached the manager after a week and she apologised with deepest regrets for the unusual mistake. And promised to refund dinner and the error charge. Plus oysters in the house my next visit. My next visit? Why on earth would I return? Another chance! Sure. That's fair. But I haven't went that refund. I've given my credit card to the restaurant and contact info. And many calls. No refund. Very bad service. Very bad food. And most of all I did not feel welcome at all. Not even a smidge. I don't like leaving such a bad review. It feels icky. Okay, you got to be kidding me! Based on some reviews, I decided to visit this restaurant for the seafood. I'm giving it a 3 based on the miniscule portions of their meals. I ordered 8 oysters as an appetizer. They were good, but very small. At $2.50 ea, they should at least provide more than a morsel. Okay, ordered the scallops base on other reviews. They were good (only reason for the 3 rating) but you get 3 medium size scallops w/ 2 small rice cakes for $36. That's all...no sides, no nothing. This was one of the best overall dining experiences that I've had in quite some time, and as one who dines out three to four nights a week, that's saying something. Before I get to the fantastic food, I must acknowledge Jason, who provided flawless and impeccable service. He had deep knowledge of the menu and foot items, he handled questions and fussy requests like a pro and provided incredibly efficient, professional service to our group of eight, not to mention providing a handful of separate checks with grace and ease. Everything that I ordered and sampled at Rappahannock was truly top notch, starting with the oysters. They had only three varieties of oysters, all of which were local, but they were quite good. The caviar lover among our group was pleased with the Grinnell caviar that he ordered. While all of the food was quite good, the white gazpacho soup with chilled blue crab was the award winner of my meal. The Rain or Shine Lettuces salad was outstanding. Nearly everyone in our group ordered some kind of seafood or soup. From the scallops to the rockfish to the oyster bouride, everyone was quite pleased with the quality and flavors. Desserts didn't disappoint either, including a nice cheese plate. The restaurant is located in an old building. It's open and airy with a high ceiling, exposed brick walls and a large bar as the centerpiece. It's large, but very inviting, Next door is the adjacent Rapp Sessions with its oyster bar. This long and narrow space is a casual, but a bit more cozy. Rappahanoock is definitely worth the trip to this part of downtown Richmond, even though the particular area seems a little sleepy in the evening. read more

It's been about six years since I've been to Rappahannock in RVA and I've missed it. I called before coming and the young lady on the phone was very helpful w/ the menu. We were greeted immediately upon entering by a lovely and friendly hostess. The space is the same beautiful, airy place that I remembered and we were lucky enough to be seated by the huge windows. For drinks we had the draft prosecco which is delish and a draft lager. We ordered several small plates... baked oysters, farm salad, bread plate (bread is from Sub Rosa). All of the dishes were wonderful. I especially loved the salad for its simplicity... baby kale, sliced cheese, and apples w/ a light lemon vinaigrette. We shared the grilled octopus and whole red snapper for our entrees. Other reviewers stated that the octopus and snapper were burned, and I can see why some people would feel that way. There were blackened spots on both, but they didn't taste burned nor were they dry. We personally loved the dark char on both the octopus and red snapper and thought they were both absolutely delicious. Our server was prompt and friendly, and the manager visited our table to ask about our food which was a nice touch. I'd like to point out how lovely the staff was overall. From my phone call, to the hostess, server, and manager, they were all professional, friendly, and on-point. Compliments to them all. Lastly, I've always loved this restaurant and still do. Order alllll the oysters, a bottle of prosecco, and share a few small plates with a group of friends. This is a lovely little spot for a GNO, date night, or birthday celebration. Atmosphere is awesome. Raw bar is excellent. The menu is creative and sustainably thought out. I am typically drawn to scallop dishes and theirs did not disappoint: black rice, yellow coconut curry, pineapple, thai basil, chili oil....10/10 recommend! read more
