It turns out we had been here before, and I'd completely forgotten the experience until we arrived last Thursday around 7 or 8 o'clock. The parking lot is small, and there is a pothole in the alley near the parking lot entrance that will bottom out an SUV. Apparently, there is additional parking, but we didn't see it in the dark. The restaurant is cozy, Hawaiian-themed, and clean. We were seated within moments of entering the host's periphery, and received menus and ice water within minutes. I had the poke bowl last time, and I remember it being chilled and gently flavored. The avocado and spicy mayo did a lot of the heavy lifting. It was filling and very healthy. My partner enjoyed the Ipanema Sandwich last time we visited. This time around we snacked on the fried halloumi (fried cheese and mint yogurt dip) and Lumpia, taquito-type beef rolls, with sweet and sour dip. We absolutely demolished the coconut cream pie for dessert. The pie was so delicate and lovely that even my partner enjoyed it, a typical coconut detractor. I recommend Little Nickel to anyone looking to try something unique and ambitious that veers from the well-trodden culinary path. My party of 4 came in for dinner on a Tuesday evening, and we were a little bit disappointed with the service. The staff were polite, but we had to ask several times to get items we were missing or things we wanted extras of. They checked in on us a fair number of times, but they still forgot to return to give us what we had asked for. By the time we were ready to leave, we still haven't gotten our dressings or our condiments. I also had asked for my burger to be well done, but I got a burger with quite a bit of pink in it. I didn't want to ask for it to be placed back on the grill because I didn't really want to wait longer for my food. Although I wanted my burger to be well done and I didn't get it that way, it was still pretty good. The fries though, I think was the best part of it. The fries were perfectly seasoned and crunchy! I also ordered a coke. Just a heads up, they don't do free refills on the sodas, so each cup is $4. My party also ordered salmon l'orange and a romano salad with salmon. My friends really enjoyed their main dishes, but we did ask for extra dressing. The restaurant is decorated in a boho-style vibe, and it was cute. We found the lighting on the side dining area to be a little bit too dim once the sun went down, but I do think it would've been perfect for a date night vibe. I always love the atmosphere of Little Nickel when we stop in. On Friday night after a day at River Rock we went for dinner and had a great evening full of laughs and good food. The restaurant was quite busy, but we were seated on the patio quickly. That evening, they had a pasta al a vodka special but I still got the lamb burger with fries. We also got the pork bowl, which was HUGE and the table favorite. The bowl had rice, beans, pineapple, shredded pork, tomatoes and pickled onions. I love the amount of food and all the toppings. It was kind of elevated chipotle! We finished the evening with coconut cream pie and a couple more Coors lights. The coconut cream pie was fluffy and slightly sweet. I came here for dinner on a Wednesday and I'm lucky we had reservations as it was packed. I ordered the crab spaghetti ($24) and it came out in about 20 minutes. I was astounded by the portion size, like there was easily 3 servings. Noodles were cooked well and the sauce was good. Due to the huge size it was a bit hard to get all the sauce onto the noodles so some of it was a bit dry and bland, but when you did get the sauce onto it, it was quite good. There was a fair amount of crab meat for the price. Overall the highlight of this place is the food portion size, some of the best bang for your buck you will find. My wife chose the Lamb Burger with slaw. It was a generously sized flavorful burger on a fresh brioche bun. The slaw was luscious. I chose the Ahi Poke Bowl. It was a large deep bowl with plenty of marinated Ahi Tuna, rice, cucumber strips, and edamame. My date also had a steak dish which was pretty good, and if I had gotten that, would have possibly given a higher rating. Our fish was properly cooked and we enjoyed the red snapper, except for the confusing fusion of a jalapeño and basil sauce that accompanied the red snapper. Is this Hawaiian? I have a good friend who moved to the area recently so I visited for the day so we could catch up, walk the neighborhood and have lunch.
