I made an appt for an MRI, and I was told there was an additional for sedation since I am claustrophobic. My driver didnt show up, so I couldnt have the sedation. I made it through the MRI without sedation, but expected an adjustment to my bill. I was told after the the MRI the sedation was free, so I wasnt charged an extra fee for it. The $600 I owed didnt include the cost for sedation. Hmmmm, I questioned if that is true, because the lady that called me the day before wanted to be sure I had a driver because of the sedation. She wanted to be sure I understood there would be an extra charge. So my question is, was anyone been charged an extra charge for sedation if claustrophobic during an MRI? If so, how much was it? Instead, I met with a genuine, down to earth, personable doctor that actually listened to all my complaints and I mean all of them lol. Not just "my back hurts," but also my entire medical history. Dr. Desaloms already has my MRIs up on a giant screen ready to review my issues. This office clearly invests in top-notch technology, and it shows. Love his PA Stephanie (extra bonus points for having her in his back pocket!). He's not the kind of neurosurgeon who pushes surgery just because he can. I may need it someday, but right now he's focused on what's best for me. That kind of organic, patient-first approach is rare. I saw Dr. Debra Combs Cantrell last year, she was the 5th specialist I saw in a 10 month period…read morethat was recommended to me by another doctor. She is a kind woman, a bit eccentric, I believe at the time I found her cartoonish but I think that was how her voice sounded through the migraines. Here's the thing, she seemed to care and she tried to help me. The biggest issue is that she would schedule our follow ups 2-3 months apart. Had she been willing to see me more frequently I could have wasted less time with her as she was not able to help me. She was the only specialist I saw that prescribed something that had some change in my symptoms but it wasn't fixing them, it was simply changing them and I was not able to improve my quality of life on it. In fact it had a strong physical effect on me that was not healthy. However, I would wait in her freezing room for 40-55 minutes past our appointment times for 15 minutes of consultations and instruction to come back in a very long time. It was disrespectful and she wasn't able to help me. She also insisted on another MRI and MRA even though I had given her the laundry list of testing I had done including 2 other MRIs that she had the results of. This however, seems to be a common practice among all neurologists but makes the patient feel like they aren't being listened to. What did end up being wrong with me was on the MRI but "that's not what neurologists look for." When I was in tears with her about medicines that were not working and that my symptoms were inhibiting my driving ability and I was scared but I had to get to work each day... she told me not to drive anymore... than suggested I drive to places across the state. In fact, it was basically up to me to diagnose myself and when I thought I was on to something and asked her for a referral she basically said that sounded great but she didn't know what to tell me. I was already discouraged and frightened when I started seeing her for my symptoms and I still felt that way when I decided to stop seeing her. I would recommend you consult heavily with your primary care physician before you see any neurologist and there are other ones here but I also recommend you get second and third opinions as this field commonly uses patients as guinea pigs and tell you that you may never know what is wrong with you. That aspect is more the fault of our country's medical care system than her fault. I am giving the second star because her bedside manner and concern were unfortunately a lot higher than 3 of the other specialists I saw. This may not seem like it now but this is a comparison review of the field and there are ones out there that are worse. Her staff was always cordial to me, never had a single complaint there. There are also other neurologists out of this office, I cannot speak to them. There is an MRI facility on site so you can schedule to get one done a lot quicker than at other places.

August 2005, 10:15am…read more Sign in at the doc's office, fill out forms, sign release forms since the damn HIPPA laws and the dorks at the MRI place sent them the 1st report but not the 2nd, sit down and wait.. and wait... and ask what the hold up is... he's stuck in surgery, he will be back soon... and wait... About NOON, we finally got to see the neurosurgeon (Nickname "TheCuteOne"). He asks me about my migraines, my numbness, my symptoms, and really listens to what I had to say. For once in this whole crazy shabang, I had a doctor listening to ME! He pulls out the MRI (and the X-rays sent with me by the Chiropractic Neurologist I had seen the week before) and shows the Chiari and starts drawing little happy faces and lines on it. The fact that my Chiari is only 8mm was a good thing and he said that it just didn't look like they were crowding each other that bad. It was possible that the "hole" that the cerebellar tonsils fell in is bigger than "bigger than normal." He says that he wants me to go get a second opinion (maybe a third if 2nd doesn't agree), but he just didn't think my condition was bad enough for surgery at this time. He wants to talk to the other doctor if Mr.2ndOpinion thinks I need surgery, and he wants to send me to a new neurologist to start a brand new pain medication and treatment plan to see if we can treat my Chiari without a knife and a zipper-scar. After he talks to me "TheCuteOne" asks my parents if they have any questions. My mother brings up the 2nd MRI that I had done last week and the absence of a syrinx. He flat out tells us that had my 2nd MRI from Tuesday resulted positive, and that I had a syrinx, then instead of pain medication and new doctors... that our conversation today would have been more along the lines of hospital gowns, designs shaved into the back of my head, and what color stitches I wanted in my zipper. He said that the Chiari surgeries were "FUN" and that you get to go in there and see all kinds of neat stuff.. but he frankly didn't think I needed it yet. He's a brain surgeon, he says he does necks and backs for "FUN." Then he seals the deal by saying, in front of my parents, "if you were my daughter, I wouldn't do surgery." This was the first neurosurgeon I saw for Chiari and I was a little put off by his suggestion that my surgery was something he did for fun, like waterskiing. The reason I can't give Dr. Cwikla more than the 1 star, is because he is the one who referred me to Deborah Cantrell... the drug dealer who made the first six months of my life as a diagnosed Chiarian a living Hell.
