Had to use their avian vet for testing (NPIP) to move my chickens from Alaska to Colorado. Yes, my flock of 7 hens and one roo, The test came back positive... false positives thankfully. Turned into a bit of a nightmare for a week, had to have the state vet retest my flock and when that came back negative, we immediately shipped them off. When they arrived they laid eggs on my truck after a 10 hour flight. They're very happy hens, Loved how ravenwood staff were so attentive with my flock and my situation. THEY DONT HAVE TIME FOR YOU OR YOUR PET Most difficult veterinarian office to deal with. I can't comment on the quality of care because I can't get an appointment even though I'm an established client for over 7 years! I can get in for shots if I wait 5 weeks. If you want an appointment you have to call at 0700 to try to get one of a handful of appointments. If you call at 0715 there's none left. They say that they will put you on a wait list for the next opening but freely tell you that you'll have to call back every morning in order to remind them to move your name to that days wait list. If you can't get a same day the regular appointment wait time is over a month! If you need immediate attention they will send you to a veterinary urgent care. read more

NICHOLSON even though he was in surgery all day. My blue and gold macaw ate some d-con mouse bait under the kitchen sink after the plumber left. I live in Eagle River. I've taken her to Ravenwood before. I had called the Pet Poison Helpline prior to calling Ravenwood. Helpline told me to get my bird an injection of vitamin K1 (an antidote) as soon as possible. To shorten this story, Ravenwood clinic flat refused to see my bird even though they are one of the very few clinics that treat birds. I called 6 other clinics, from south Anchorage to Palmer. Finally COLLEGE VILLAGE ANIMAL CLINIC, DR. NICHOLSON agreed to treat her even though he was in surgery all day (the same as the ravenwood vet). read more

My family have been taking our pets to Ravenwood for many years. We decided to switch from VCA after they charged us $20 for my dog having an accident on the floor despite me cleaning up after him. Thankfully, all of our experiences at Ravenwood have been much better. The front desk service is consistently prompt and friendly. The doctors and technicians are great as well and will address any questions or concerns you might have. The facility is clean and bright with some magazines and seating space near the private rooms. There's also grooming services offered next door. We take our cat here to get his claws trimmed. The service is fast and affordable and the technicians love our cat. Ravenwood also offers a military discount for active duty and veterans and their family which is great with how expenses vet bills can be. I definitely recommend going to Ravenwood if you're in need of veterinary care in the Chugiak-Eagle River area. read more

Ravenwood is a RIP OFF. They never have open appointment times and their vets try to prescribe things that the pet doesn't need. My dog had a UTI and I proved that with a urine dipstick test. I was told I needed to do another one through their clinic even though I am board certified to run these tests. They charged $40 for a test that costs less than $0.50. Then they refused to give my dog antibiotics and made me accept a $50 probiotic because she wouldn't pee on command for them. I brought her sample back later that night and she was diagnosed with a UTI and given an antibiotic that OF COURSE I could not buy cheaper somewhere else. Then they refused to let me return the $50 probiotic that was unopened and we never used because she needed antibiotics not a BS homeopathic treatment. Overall my brand new puppy's UTI cost $250. It would cost the same amount for a human to get treated at a walk-in clinic. The owner is refusing to let us return the unopened probiotic because they claim they "can't verify the efficacy" as if I somehow spoiled the unopened box. My other dog, they refused to try and treat her yeast infection and instead tried to convince me she needed a $200 steroid instead of just TREATING the infection. RIDICULOUS!!! This clinic is a scam and they try to suck people dry even when they know the owner is undergoing their own serious medical treatment. Do not use Ravenwood, they'll suck you dry and won't even help your dog. I informed the office manager that we would not be coming back to Ravenwood and that I will share this negative experience with everyone I know. They got fired by me--then she had the gall to try and send us a certified letter stating we are no longer allowed to be patients at Ravenwood. How petty and unprofessional LOL. We fired you last week. You don't get to act like we did something wrong for demanding accountability from you. Incredibly childish and ridiculous behavior. Now they are sending their staff to attempt to bully me into submission on the reviews I posted. The staff and business owner are unethical, unprofessional, and immature. read more

Most of the vets there are quite good. The last one I saw was a bad apple. Very unprofessional--reflected in her egregioius chart notes which included gossip about us that had ZERO to do with our dog or his care. Ulitmately, I had our charts sent back to our tried-and-true vet in Anchorage, whom I've been going to for 21 years. We found out the hard way that he's worth driving the extra miles to South Anchorage to see. I don't have a problem with Ravenwood clinic per say... but an unprofessional practitoner who shows such poor judgement is a liability to all concerned, including the animals. read more

I took my golden retriever Charlie to Ravenwood Clinic in Eagle River, AK to be seen by Dr. Susan Wagnon for a slightly sunken left eye. Dr. Wagnon told me in no uncertain terms that Charlie had brain cancer and that a tumor had released the muscles holding his eye into place. Wagnon said Charlie's eye was permanent and also indicated that Charlie's brain tumor was the cause of the hind end mobility problems which he had been experiencing over the past six months. Dr. Wagnon then gave me 22 pages of oncology paperwork on what to feed a dog with cancer, how to provide care for a dog who is dying, when to put your dog down, and connecting to a pet loss grief support group. She also put him on a diet for cancer patients. Doctor Wagnon urged me to take Charlie with me to Seattle to get an MRI to determine the type, location and prognosis of the brain cancer. I left the vet office in tears and terrible grief, barely sleeping at night for the next seven days. My family said sad goodbyes to Charlie as they anticipated being on the East Coast over the holidays for a month and did not know if he would still be alive upon their return. There was no cancer found in Charlie's brain or spine. Instead, he had three slightly inflamed, compressed discs that caused the eye problem (which is, after all, not permanent) and hind-end mobility problem for which the Seattle vet prescribed a steroid. While I am overjoyed that my dog does not have cancer, I am now $4,896.90 in debt because of Ravenwood's false diagnosis. This false diagnosis put my family and I under unnecessary financial and emotional duress, at Christmastime, no less. I am concerned that when Charlie does encounter a genuine life-threatening challenge to his health, which is likely to occur in the next 1-3 years given his age, I will not have funds available to pay for the treatment he needs. When I asked Dr. Wagnon/Ravenwood to refund all or part of the costs I incurred due to their false diagnosis, Wagnon responded in an unkind letter, "Your financial decisions are not my responsibility". I have never posted on yelp before, and I usually do not complain a lot, but I don't want anyone else to have to go through this. I waited for over a year for Ravenwood to resolve this situation before making this post. They haven't. Thankfully, the Seattle vet gave us a referral to a new vet in Anchorage that I am very happy with (VCA on Lake Otis). read more

Worst experience I've ever had with a vet. I brought my brother in-laws dying cat in yesterday who had been wedged in between a fence for who knows how long. They turned us away because we did not have an appointment. They suggested us to drive to either wasilla or anchorage. The cat ended up having to be euthanized after suffering for another hour while we drove to the next available urgent care. Love this place! They've taken great care of my Italian Greyhounds over the past few years. From dental care (thankfully less expensive than projected and perfectly executed), to standard visits, to helping me make the decision to say goodbye to one of my pups, the care provided has always been genuine and kind. When I had to put Malu down, Dr. Hass helped talk me through my choices and discussed the potential for a good quality of life if I elected to go with meds instead. I thought I found the right place. In the beginning everyone seemed very nice. I scheduled my appointments in advance for grooming. In fact I scheduled them a year in advance because of low appointment availability for almost everything at this place. For 5 weeks I had been calling to get my dogs in before their scheduled appointment because their hair had grown out so much. No appointments were available so we waited for their scheduled appointment. I received a call 2 days before their appointment to say that they cannot groom my dogs because their rabies vaccination is needed. I said ok, I can pay for it the same day. Then I'm hit with, "we can't vaccinate them that day." SO MY Appointment is canceled because they don't have appointments??? I was willing to deal with the extremely high prices but what use is having a Doc for your dog when the Dr can NEVER see your pets? I'm so frustrated and disappointed with the way this was handled. I will never go back to this clinic. If I have to drive an hour away, I will. read more

I recently had to get surgery on my dogs knee. I tried at the VCA clinic on Lake Otis but was unable to get it done. (Long story). The cost there was $5,400. I then read about Ravenwood and decided to try them. The surgery here was only $2,900. HUGE DIFFERENCE! Not only was the cost different but so was the care. I was exceedingly nervous and apprehensive about this surgery (having done the same thing last year for my dogs other leg), and Ravenwood totally took care of my concerns. Answering all my questions, never getting impatient with me, called me multiple times throughout the surgery day and took really wonderful care of both me and my Frankie dog. I cannot say how much I appreciated both the front desk people (I needed two invoices because my insurance was denying part of the surgery), the technicians, who cuddled my baby and kept him safe, to the Dr's who did the surgery-Dr Priddy and the Ravenwood Dr who took care of Frankie after surgery. I wish Dr Priddy had his own Yelp page as he did a wonderful job on my dogs other leg last year and I'm sure a wonderful job on the other leg this year and I'd love to write him his own review. Anyways--you can trust Ravenwood to work with best and to give the best care at the best price. And that is hard to find in any field. Thank you to everyone at this clinic. Initially when I started taking my dog there 10 years ago they were really good, but it's been a steady decline in service. I kick myself now for staying with them as my dog had diabetes and I didn't even know until he had to be put to sleep at an emergency clinic. When I asked Ravenwood if they tested him for diabetes during his annual bloodwork they said he didn't show any signs so no. Signs being did he drink more and urinate more - always the answer to them was he always drank a lot since he was a puppy so it was hard to say if he was drinking/peeing even more. However he did start suffering seizures years ago mysteriously out of the blue with no explanation that lasted several months then stopped just as mysteriously. Ravenwood told me they checked for the usual causes, but no answer was reached except sometimes these things happen and they develop seizures. Turns out seizures ARE a sign of diabetes too, but he still wasn't tested for it as Ravenwood didn't seem to think/know that was a symptom?!? Everywhere I looked up dog diabetes they listed seizures so that's a pretty big miss for a vet in my book. If I get another dog, I will not take them to Ravenwood. I don't trust their vets to be knowledge and take care of my furry family members since they either determined he didn't have diabetes based on vaguely answered drinking/urinating questions or didn't know diabetes could cause seizures. read more

Dr. Schmidt and Dr. Hass have been treating our turtle for an ongoing problem. I followed Dr. Schmidt here when she moved away from a Wasilla clinic. I'm glad that I did! They both went the extra mile to help our reptilian friend. Dr. Schmidt has since moved away, but Dr. Hass is still here, helping animals and their families. Ravenwood and VCA are both nice places with nice staff. main difference is the overhead and years of experience. You pay for a lot of overhead at VCA and the Doc's seem less experienced. Ravenwood keeps the cost down and the Docs seem a bit more experienced. Ravenwood is the place you should look at first, when searching for quality affordable vet care in Eagle River. read more

I highly recommend this vet. They have been great working with our 14 year old dachshund, and our three other small dogs. They set up appointments with a local cardiology specialist right away when we suspected heart problems for our older girl. She is now on both lung and heart medications from Ravenwood, and this vet has gone above and beyond to help us find her medications when the manufacturer had a shortage. The staff at Ravenwood has also taken the time to call many and submit prescriptions to three different pharmacies to locate all of her medications on short notice when she needed more and needed extra for a tummy issue. The staff and the doctors are very friendly and understanding. I feel like they really care about my dogs and they have been pleasant to work with while managing some complicated issues with the older dog. Our dogs really are our only children and we are very happy to have found a vet that we trust with their well-being. read more

I started going to Dr. Wagnon's clinic when it was just her and a tech in the mid 90's. I was impressed then when my crazy cat Poonchkie lost it and bit her and scratched me. We managed to subdue him and finish his exam using a thick wild beast glove. She laughed it off as part of the job and I was hooked. Her clinic is one of the best staffed and estheticallly pleasing facilities in the ANC/ER area. I've watched her business grow over the years and she consistantly has top notch Drs., Techs, and office staff. They let you know all of the options available and deal honestly and directly with the pet parents. I moved to Anchorage late last year and missing them already. read more

My review is mixed. When my retriever was dying with cancer I had a woman vet who was good. Then my mom came to visit with her little dog, not so good. We went to after hours clinic and the guy misdiagnosed the dog as having cancer and needed an expensive surgery right away she could not afford and its a good thing when she got back to AZ she went to her vet and it was not cancer, it ruined her trip up here and our short time together. Also when she went to pick up the dog they demanded payment before they would release him. It upset her. Then I had taken in a dog and it got hit by a car I called and said I had no money right now what should we do she looked like she was going to die and they said bring her in so we did and they charged us over $300, took what small amount of grocery money we had on us, and the dog lived 10 mins after arrival. I have found vet costs to be twice here what they were in Montana where we are from if not more and we are looking for an affordable vet in AK, but I havent found one yet. Ive seen comments about VCA, nicer but equally expensive. I'll try some pet insurance perhaps that will help absorb the shock. read more
