Our dog was spayed by Dr. Jen Tuomi and what was supposed to be a routine surgery turned into a nightmare. The day after the surgery our dog started hemorrhaging and we took her to the Pet ER for a second life-saving surgery to stop the internal bleeding. We called the clinic the morning after the ER surgery to ask questions of Dr. Jen during business hours and received no phone call back to inquire about the condition of our dog, who had been a patient of Highland since she was a puppy. Emailed the clinic to request to specifically speak with the vet who performed the spay surgery and again, the vet won't call us to discuss the condition or my questions after the trauma of almost losing our dog. Vet tech called one WEEK later to check on our dog and left a voicemail. Disappointed is an understatement. Won't be going back. read more

We brought our yellow Lab to Highland Animal Clinic in Anchorage for over 11 years and have been very happy with the practice. Our vet, Jennifer Tuomi, and her staff have always been kind, caring, competent, and reasonably priced. We were especially touched and grateful for the kindness that they showed us when it was time to euthanize our beloved 15 year old Lab. We never felt that this was a routine procedure for them. After a month to cool down, i am writing this post. highland has seen my dog at least anuannaly for the past few years. i had been floating to find a vet i liked since dr. wooldridge retired. some dog show people recommend the tuomi's as jenn's parents had been respected vets. there has always been communication issues with my visits regarding medication refills and simple explanations of things. most recently, my dog was scheduled for a basic visit to check lumps, re-fill meds, general issues. just prior to visit his belly began to swell. they didn't do blood work then and scheduled it 2 weeks out. i had to call back 4 days in a row for a prescription refills, and they weren't filling them because they had to complete blood work. fine but then they want to charge for another visit. and none of this was discussed with me at the time of my visit. the front desk gal is snarky and frankly rude. i was not going to wait 2 weeks for blood work especially with his bloated belly. found another vet. they got me in the same day, did blood work, scheduled x rays, and ultrasound for following day. turns out my dog is dying. dr tuomi called and left me a message firing me as a customer. i DO NOT RECOMMEND this clinic. they don't care about my dog or his well being. their communication and care is negligent and if you say anything they will fire you as a customer. read the other reviews apparently this is how jenn conducts her business. ****UPDATED*** One of the veterinarians has left the facility.....that was the only good veterinarian! Do not come here they are horrible.... they are snarky as all get out! we have undergone a lot of testing, expensive testing,for my dog.... now since the other veterinarian left, the one that's left wants to rerun every expensive test done again!!!! None of the notes matter from the other vet! I'm sorry do you not trust the veterinarian that was there? Not going through this again we will be finding a new vet ASAP!!!!! STAY AWAY!!!!!! ****old post**** I have had the experience of going to another Veterinarian clinic and it was the worst experience ever.... HOWEVER Highland animal clinic is not this other animal clinic and Highland was one of the best experiences Ive ever had at a veterinarian clinic!!! The staff was extremely friendly. The veterinarian was extremely knowledgeable friendly and took the time to explain every concern that I had about my new puppy! All of them were amazing. A+++ service from start to finish. Multiple generations of my family have gone to this clinic for many, many animals and spent plenty of money here. I had to sit on my review for a month to calm down enough to write it. This is not the same clinic that it was five or ten years ago. In October of 2019, I took my geriatric cat in for a check up and issues toileting. She was in obvious pain, and I made it very clear that due to her age there would be no extraordinary measures. We did a full blood work up and UA, and Dr Jen prescribed a three day course of anti inflammatory and told us that there was nothing else that could be done without $500-$600 worth of imaging. There was no follow up at the end of her course of medication and she continued to worsen. I called a mobile vet to provide euthanasia because we were unwilling to spend the money for imagining just to be told there was no other recourse. The mobile vet arrives, and upon meeting our cat exclaims "this cat is too healthy to euthanize!" and asks to review her blood work and UA, which we provided to her. She stated that the problem was one of two issues, both of which could be treated in the same way (with an ongoing course of a stronger anti-inflammatory). This gave our cat ten more months, nine of which were high quality. In March of 2020, Highland called and canceled our appointment for our dogs nail trim, due to COVID. Which I was not at all fussed about. In May, Highland called to schedule a follow up appointment for the cat, without even asking if she was still alive. I relayed what the mobile vet had said and, in full disclosure, said in anger that they had violated our trust for our cats care. I told them at that time that our dog would continue to be a patient there, but that our cat would continue to see the mobile vet. In June they called to schedule us for an annual check up for the dog and I told them I wanted to wait until after cases weren't spiking due to COVID (keep in mind they had canceled her previous appointment due to COVID). At this time, WITHOUT INFORMING US, after years of seeing my dog bimonthly, they fired us as patients. I called in August because it was apparent that it was time for my cat to cross the rainbow bridge, our mobile vet was out of town, and we were desperate. I cried on the phone explaining to them that she was completely obstructed and could not use the litter box and needed to be put down ASAP. They told me since we were inactive patients they could see us "some time next week". I told them that this choice would directly affect whether or not we continued to bring our dog there and they said "they understand", and I asked for her records to be emailed to me at which point I saw several things written in our records that were outright lies and also that we had been fired as patients for both animals. My cat was lovingly escorted across the rainbow bridge that afternoon by Dr Medkeff at VCA and Highand Animal Clinic will never see another dime of my money. read more

I haven't been with Highland very long, only since my vet retired and closed shop. But so far I've been quite impressed. Most recently I brought my old Aussie in for a check up, vaccinations, and had questions about issues he was having. Thanks to Covid, of course, I couldn't go in with him. The staff is always more than helpful when I call. Plus they have their app, where I can request an appointment, medication refills, text results, etc. When I brought my boy in the vet called me and assured me all of the issues I had questions about were all just "old man problems". He did fine on a medicine for quite some time, and I was assured he was doing great for his age and he would live another 2 years or so. But then most recently he started having problems so I texted the clinic. They asked if I wanted a call back and I said yes. A few hours later the doctor called and said his issues were something that coincides with one of the issues we were trying to control with meds. She recommended a "Help em up" harness, which I purchased through a local shop, and it helped me with getting him in and out of the house, the car, etc. Unfortunately he went from bad to worse within just a few days. I texted them an update and they asked if I wanted an appointment or if it was just an update. At the time I said update. But the next day I said "Wellll, maybe we need an appointment." I brought him in and they examined him, then called me and said "chances are he developed a tumor." He has been the healthiest dog we've ever owned so we figured it was bound to happen. He just waited till the very end to show he was sick. They were more than caring and compassionate for a family who hasn't been with them that long. I would expect hugs from my old vet because they have been our vet for over 20 years (Covid or not) and they are also good friends. But for relatively new patients I thought they were awesome. I love being able to text them about issues to see if we need an appointment, or just for routine checkups. Their Covid protocol is good. And their level of care is pretty good considering they don't know us that well, as we haven't been patients there long. read more

Dr Noelle was extremely informative & thorough during my cats exams, dental clean and thyroid disease control. I cannot thank her enough for being proactive with her patients. My cat is about 9 years old now and in the best health she's been since she was a younger, spry kitty. I also take my dog here. Not only is Dr Noelle able to maintain her health she has also dealt with a semi-emergent food poisoning situation we had. I cannot thank her, or their staff enough for taking care of my pets. I love Highland Animal Clinic, and especially Dr Jen Tuomi. I've also seen Dr Jack and Dr Pam and also appreciate their experience and obvious love for animals. All of the staff are equally kind and helpful. The prices are quite reasonable, especially compared to other vets in Anchorage. They don't nickel and dime you and, for me, have never ordered unnecessary tests. At times it can be hard to get an appointment, but Dr Jen has always been available by phone when something bad is going on and, when a phone call was insufficient, worked me in. I love this establishment. Kind, friendly customer service. They don't seem to over book appointments. Minimal wait times with appointments. Very clean and reasonably priced . All veterinarians take time to explain and educate on treatment or procedures. Certainly worth the drive to have my pets treated like a family member. read more

Dr. Jennifer Tuomi is one of the best vets I've encountered nationwide. I'm a traveling therapist and am constantly moving with my two pups so I've been to more vets than I can count. She was extremely knowledgeable about my dogs condition (epilepsy) and potential treatment avenues. At no point did I feel she was trying to get me to run a million and different (unnecessary tests) and her prices are extremely reasonable. To top it all off...I went in for an appointment at 3:45pm. She called me at 6:00pm with the blood test results. Never in the last two decades of veterinary care have I ever received such expeditious results for my pets! Highly highly recommend! read more

Our dogs have been seeing the Tuomi's for nearly 10 years. Our oldest had a UTI, so we took her in to get antibiotics. Saw a different doctor, Noelle, who recommended expensive testing and medication. When we refused because our dog is a half-dead, cranky, 14-year old mutt, Dr. Noelle refused to fill our Predinisolone prescription. She wanted us to buy a different medication that costs almost $100 a month! Wondering what the kickback is for pushing doggie drugs? read more

I have been taking my animals here for over 20 years. Hate to say I will never be going back! Had a appointment 6 days out for my sick cat, thought he would be ok till then, and that's the soonest they had. My cat took a turn for the worse and got very sick over night. Called them and asked to please work him in I think he could die. They said sorry we can't.....huh? Wow be has been their patient since he was a kitten and it was a emergency. Would think that a vet you have been going to for so many years would care and fit you in, well guess not. I got very lucky and found another vet that acutely gave a damn. The Doctors Tuomi have cared for all of our dogs since we moved to Alaska in late 2000. They have been exceptionally kind and caring in all cases, and saved the life of my most loved dog during a very difficult birth. Went to Highland for a second opinion after a bad experience with another vet. They were friendly and worked us in, despite not having an appointment. The vet was very nice and took time to listen to our entire issue. Based on the story, and just looking at our dog (not touching her), she knew exactly what the issue was. Her recommendations were right on point and her diagnosis was spot on. Unfortunately, we didn't have many alternatives and had to put our lab down. However, the service was great, prices were reasonable, and they truly seemed to care. We will be back when we get another pet. Thanks! read more

Had been going to a premium heath clinic for the past few years spending hundreds per visit sometimes thousands for 'premium service' I have a cat the constantly kept getting UTIs and ear infections and they kept telling me it was because I was a bad care taker and that I needed to gov emu cat they're 40$ per pound bad of premium food if I was to be a good owner. Earlier this year my can jump from a high location and was limping and I was very concerned so I called the 'premium clinic' to get a quote and they said a minimum of $1300 for X-rays and blood work, in a full time student with a part time job and could t offered that so a friend recommended highland animal clinic, I called and they quoted me a high of $400 and a low of $60 surprised I decided to go there. The staff was so nice and the doctor was incredible, just within that one visit she diagnosed my can with a genetic disorder where he has decreased blood flow that was later confirmed that he had broken his femur, he has been in pain his whole life and was the cause of his constant UTI's and infections. This clinic diagnosed and treated my cat within one visits that the 'premium clinic' couldn't accomplish in the past two years. My cat had surgery and is doing amazing now. I will forever take my pets to this clinic and recommend to everyone to come here. read more

I would not recommend this clinic. I went here because it is a local clinic, but I was sorely disappointed with the service and policies. I needed to get new arthritis meds for my elderly dog. When I try to get the generic prescription for the meds, the clinic dug their heels in. I just asked them to send the script to costco, who was waiting to receive the script so I could pick it up later in the day. Nope. They said they will not prescribe a generic med because they could not vouch for the efficacy of the generic meds (Seriously, do they not understand generic meds?!?), then they said that they would not send the script to the costco pharmacy. They made me go pick it up in person across town, rather than just fax it to Costco..presumably to discourage people from using outside pharmacies, because that seems to be the only obvious reason. Mind you I could just buy the name brand med at the vets office at a premium cost with less hassle, but I don't like to be pressured and strong armed. I showed up to pick to the prescription to hand deliver it to costco and what do I see...the name brand drug advertised all over the clinic. I see why they made it so difficult to get generic meds... Seriously, if pet health and customer service was their top priority then this would not have been a big deal. Now I had to make two trips across town and take time off from work. Thanks for making my life more difficult than it needed to be today. My dog needs surgery and now I have to look for another vet..... read more
