    Park View, overlooking Ravinia.
    Steve A.

Ravinia is a great outdoor environment for seeing a concert, whether on the lawn with your own picnic or under the pavilion. We enjoy both. When we eat on the lawn we bring a picnic and rent chairs and tables to avoid the hassle of carrying them on the Metra. It costs less than $20 for the whole deal. If we run low on food or wine we pick some up at RAVINIA MARKET, which has a nice selection of prepared foods and some pretty darn good wines--although nothing cheap. Last summer we ate many times in MIRABELLE, the downstairs buffet. There are quite a few good items--and a few misses--but it's fairly expensive for what it is. Sometimes there is a bundled deal that includes pavilion concert seats and dinner. That's a good deal. The nicest restaurant is PARK VIEW, which is upstairs. It's certainly a stunning setting, with a glass wall that overlooks the dazzling green of Ravinia Park. Best of all is being high above the sea of colorful people blanketing the lawn. Some of the food is rather pedestrian (guacamole with a lump of crab meat on top was a recent featured appetizer), but a few items are quite good. All the restaurants are run by Levy Restaurants, which is not my favorite chain. To staff Ravinia, they borrow chefs from Spiaggia and other places within their organization. It must be weird to run a restaurant that is only open a few months a year, and the slightly amateurish service is a telling detail. But for the most part things run efficiently, and the food is good if not great. Three stars for food, 5 stars for location.

Not too many seats so there could be a wait during busy days but for a burger this good I'd say it's worth the wait. Good service and great ambience. I promise you will love the food and the place. Great food and great service. Is what you're in for

These two "fellows" know more about this implausible city than Oprah, Barack and Michael all rolled into one. Yeah, these two "Starkers" (Big Bosses) got this city down! With that grandiose opening, only these two "Starkers" could take me out for dinner to a restaurant 50 miles away (round trip) on a Saturday night. This better be good, I thought. Charlie Beinlich's Food and Tap out in Northbook is this Dive Bar / Tavern established in 1950 and looked and felt every bit of its 75 years; I absolutely LOVED this place. Wow, talk about nostalgia! Beinlich's emanated an era way back when that just doesn't exist anymore. At 7:30 pm this Saturday night this cash only place was packed to over flowing. I mean Humming like a turbine engine. The bar was sold out and we jumped on the only table left. Now the fun started: * Their Chili con Carne is this cauldron of meat and beans done thoroughly right. We loved it * Their shrimp cocktail was equally wonderful * My Cheeseburger was out of this world. With sautéed onions, real cheddar cheese, on toasted rye bread - Wow, it was so good. * Their French fries and coleslaw were great sides * My Miller Highlife Beer in a bottle took me back to my college days. The service was great, the ambience was better and the crowd was just this mess of very happy people. Will I come back here - a resounding YES! This is exactly what happens to you when you go out with the right people.

We were able to get last minute reservations for 8:30 on a Friday, which was surprising given how extremely busy this place is on the weekends. We arrived on time and were seated quickly without a wait, which was another impressive moment given how packed the restaurant was. Dining here is like dining in the city on the weekends, with a majority of the crowd tending toward older groups of friends or families without children. There was one family of four who brought their child with them, but generally we saw couples and groups of friends. Dress seems standardly smart casual. Food: The menu here is organized into three sections: small plates, mid-size meals, and entree-sized portions. Keep in mind the mid-sized plates can be on the larger side, so the tapas-style menu can be deceiving. We ordered the steak and frites and branzino as our mains, with polenta fries on the side. For apps, we ordered the butternut squash ravioli and were greeted with complimentary cheesy biscuits to start. We finished our meal with the olive oil cake, covered in raspberries. Based on what we ordered, we'd give this place a 4/5, simply because the steak my husband ordered was a tiny bit tough and overcooked (ordered medium rare, received medium well). The cut was a strip or a ribeye, so unfortunately on the tougher side, and less flavorful. My fish was nicely seared but the cannellini beans that were paired with the branzino just didn't do it for me. Branzino is a white fish that tolerates spice and garnishes very well, so it could have benefited from some more complex flavors. That said, we will be back for the ravioli. I'd wager that it is the best thing on the winter menu (this place rotates menu selections somewhat frequently). It was creamy, complex, and soft, with a delicious umami sauce. The olive oil cake we shared for dessert was also very delicious, moist and well-paired with simple cream and berries. Nice and simple but did the trick without being overwhelming or cloyingly sweet. The biscuits are also a nice touch: soft and buttery, not dry, and baked fresh. Overall, I'd say that veggie and pasta dishes are the way to go here, and potentially the fish if it is paired with a more complex side in the future. We look forward to future menus!

We had a 7 o'clock reservation and did not get seated until almost 7:30 which happened to us when I ate here a year ago. The restaurant seemed extremely busy. However, they were extremely accommodating and apologized for seating us late. In addition, they sent over three appetizers for free because of the delay in seating us. That alone gets five stars from me. We had the tavern style pizza, which is only offered on Monday nights and it was delicious! The meatballs, fried cheese and salad was amazing as well! I recommend their creamy Italian dressing. It is delicious! They also brought over some bread and butter, and the butter had coarse salt mixed into it, which was unbelievable! Okay first the free bread, although the bread is nothing special the butter is noteworthy. Salty and creamy, just incredible. Let's move to the rest of the meal. The branzino was a full fish deboned and lovely. It was a Saturday and the special was the lobster risotto which was incredible. SO MUCH lobster. This is a must order. Although I did not partake in the pizza, the pizza eaters at the table couldn't stop raving about the pizza. The service was spot on and the restaurant was managed really well. Strongly recommend this place and I'm hopeful their Lincoln Park location is just as lovely.
