Rawa is a Mediterranean fusion restaurant that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in May 2017. It was founded by business partners Salam Al-Rawi and Fayez Al Hammadi. Al-Rawi is originally from Baghdad, Iraq. In the late 1970s, when Saddam Hussein's regime was particularly repressive, Al-Rawi decided to flee. He forged a stamp on his expired passport, hopped on a plane, and left the country. He could have ended up dead. He later worked at a number of successful restaurants in New York City. Hammadi is originally from Syria and co-owns Mosaic Nautural (a mosaic and tile art business) with his brothers. One of his other talents is cooking. Al-Rawi and Hammadi decided to partner up and found a space in New Haven's Westville neighborhood that had previously been home to Stone Hearth. At Rawa, the two have crafted a menu that features traditional Middle Eastern mezze platters (such as hummus, baba ghanouj, muhammara, labne), salads, soups, kebabs, falafel, biryani dishes, and even Mediterranean-inspired pizza served on pita bread crust. I recently attended Rawa's 8-Year Anniversary Celebration. This was my first visit to Rawa since their first year open and I was happy to be back. The place was all decked out with colorful decor. My group was treated to endless plates of various mezze platters, salads, falafel, biryani dishes, and Rawa's unique Middle Eastern approach to pizza. The bar tenders were also busy all night crafting delicious cocktails for the event. Some of the ones I enjoyed include the "Saffroni" (Hendricks gin, elderflower, ginger, saffron), the "Blood Orange Old Fashion" (bourbon, blood orange liqueur, bitters), and the "Up & Down Old Fashion" (bourbon, bitters). Attendees of the celebration were also treated to live entertainment with music by NYC-based Middle Eastern fusion band "Baklava Express" and a belly dance performance by Kelvia Mitri-Meda. I had an excellent time and I was so full by the end. If you love authentic Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food then look no further than Rawa!

2nd time visiting and wanted to comment on the chicken birani. I'm not a big fan of birani and this was the best I ever had, we took it home and my son asked to bring it for school lunch the next day. Tried the rawa pizza special which was great as well as dips and kebabs. Really friendly service and casual atmosphere

My siblings came to visit so we came here for dinner. We made a reservation and were seated quickly upon arrival. We got a bottle of wine and the sampler plate as an appetizer, which included baba ghanouj, muhamarra, nivik, and labne. The labne was our favorite. For entrees, we got the lamb kebab, merguez, chicken biryani and chicken kebab. Everything was good. For dessert we tried the baklava, basbousa, muhalabia and another dessert I don't recall the name of. It was fun to try them all. We had a fun night.

Had a wonderful dinner here this past evening! We ordered the hummus and pita to start, and there was plenty to share for two. Theirs is done perfectly with some tomatoes and chickpeas and a high quality olive oil. The pita is scorching hot and meltingly lovely! The lamb kebab had just the right amount of spicy "kick" to it, complemented well with the seasoned basmati rice. The sauce was flavorful, and I enjoyed this different take on lamb, usually doused in yogurt sauce by other establishments. The Falafel was well balanced and crispy, served piping-hot, with a superbly-executed salad. I believe we'll be returning to try the shrimp biriyani and some of the more adventurous dips in the future!

Chill vibes on a rainy Saturday early afternoon. Our server Emily was great, she made some pretty good cocktails as well! Everyone at the table enjoyed their food, from the chicken biriyani to lamb skewers to lamb chops and pizza. It was all savory and flavorful.

Amazing restaurant. Food is incredible & it has a cute ambiance with lots of unique art. They were extremely short staffed & our waitress not only had to attend to every table in the room taking orders, but she was the hostess, food runner, & bartender too. She did it all & it was a busy restaurant. She was pleasant & never appeared stressed despite the chaos & doing everything herself. That alone made me love this restaurant more. The dip sampler is to die for & so were the lamb kabobs, falafel & homemade pita. I wish I lived closer I'd be a regular here.

I went to Rawa with my aunt for dinner a couple weeks ago and I'm really satisfied with my experience. I didn't know what to expect, but the food was extremely fresh and it was a great atmosphere. I got falafel with pita bread and hummus. The falafel came out very hot and was so tasty. The salad on the side was also very good. My aunt got the green salad with grilled chicken and was very happy with her meal. The service was a little slow, but it was very busy and it didn't bother me. Will definitely be returning soon, can't wait to try more dishes here! Hopefully they have the rice pudding next time.

I've wanted to try this place for so long, it's a Mediterranean spot with different options like Moroccan/Turkish/ Syrian/ Lebanese and even Pakistani. We tried the lamb kebab with rice and the chicken kebab with rice and so good! The meat freshly cooked and so soft. The rise also was divine, I loved the flavor in it. We also tried a chicken soup and it was packed with flavor and soft chicken and lots of onions and garlic yum! They gave a free dessert on Valentine's day which was nice, only thing was it took time for our server to get to us , must have been short staffed but everything took a while. It wasnt to busy either. Loved the quality of the food next time I will try their dips!

The espresso cocktail was delicious. My girlfriend was quite insistent it would be too much caffeine for me, that yet remains to be seen. The Depths were delicious. Though the amount of pita provided was paltry. Only two pitas for four dips? I think I deserve one pita per dip. The hummus dip was exceptional, the other dips were forgettable. I felt like the entree was very soupy and oily. I think it also would have been improved by being paired with pita. More pita please. Overall it was okay. A bit expensive for the quality.

This place is such a gem. I loved it so much. It was nice an quiet and looked very clean. I loved the art decor on the walls and it gave the feels of Mediterranean without trying to hard. Service was amazing food was delicious and the portions were huge. We also got desert but i forgot to take a picture of that. Get the baklava and ask them to warm it up just a little bit, it will change your life! No complaints here!

What a treat. This restaurant is in the neighborhood of my son's apartment. For weeks he had been saying, "We should go"! I am so glad we did and can't wait to go back. It is a very casual and funky space. The kitchen is open, you can see the chefs working and cooking from where you sit. There are cool murals and paintings on the walls that give it a very Greenwich Village vibe. The staff was VERY friendly and knowledgeable and gave great counsel about their menu that let us make perfect choices! We started with a sampler of dips, choosing the hummus, avocado, pepper and walnut, and lentil dips. Each of them was outstanding. Interestingly, the avocado was my son's fave, my hubby's fave was the pepper and walnut, and I was all about the hummus. Each one was better than the next. And they came with giant, fresh tear-apart pitas. DEFINITELY order extras with your sampler platter. For meals, we also did a lot of sharing but our favorite of the three dishes we ordered was the chicken with lentils. The chicken was flavorful and cooked to perfection and the lentil dish it was served on what out of this world. We also got the green pizza which had an awesome curry flavor and was even better when we reheated the leftovers the next day. Same was true of the tabouleh, meaning even better on day two! Make plans to go to Rawa, you will really enjoy it! PS -- oh, and the portions are generous.

Had dinner here tonight and enjoyed every bit of the experience. Had the chicken biryani which was fresh, delicious and full of wonderful flavors and textures. The yogurt sauce that came with was a great addition. The other half got the chicken brochette which was also delicious. The hummus and fresh flat bread was phenomenal! 4.5 stars (pricey) Second time getting take out tonight Really excellent The chicken pizza is a work of art. The falafel is the best or second best I've ever had Other pizzas are very solid. A gem in Westville We have eaten here several times and wanted to post this review. This place is so delightful. The menu is somewhat limited right now but everything is fresh and homemade. The fresh pita bread is light and has a lovely smoky flavor and the dips (hummus etc) are delicious and lemony; the best around. The meat and rice dishes (biryani) have a touch of spice, wonderful rich meat/shrimp and the tenderest most savory rice I think I have ever had with grilled vegetables. I also love their grilled chicken salad with a lemony dressing and crispy lettuce. I don't personally eat wheat so have not tried the pizzas but they seem popular. Falafel was great too. read more

Had a plain pizza delivered. The cheese was not very good. Flat anfd kind of grainy. Babaganoush was great but only included one piece of pita- not enough to eat this dish. Also they packaged the soda cans with the hot food whihc of course meant they were warn when received. read more

Wow! What a revelation! Rawa hits on all cylinders for a lovely meal. The red pepper dip was outstanding -- bright roasted pepper with a perfect combination of walnut, olive oil and other spices. It's hard to get a hummus or baba ghanoush, foul or other middle eastern dips that doesn't disappoint with an air of middle-of-the-road sameness. Rawa's dip was a perfect balance of all the flavors, and the best I've tasted in years. Dinner companion chose the merguez sausage plate, and I chose a flatbread with chicken, pine nuts and sumac. Both were delicious, generous in portion, and again spot-on with the flavors. It is also somewhat unusual to have a full bar in a middle eastern restaurant. House specialty cocktail with gin and elderflower cordial was a pleasant discovery on a relatively short menu. Menu in general is short and to the point, but there's plenty for vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters alike. I will look forward to another visit soon! read more

The food was good, but the online menu that we used didn't indicate which how spicy different dishes were. My dinner guests were unable to eat the Momyaldi pizza. The Momyaldi was good and the well prepared, but they weren't able to enjoy it. We would have selected something else if we'd known. The hummus was delicious. The pita was very fresh and well cooked. I'd recommend Rawa, but you need ask which dishes are spicy and which aren't. read more

Delicious!!! The hummus and falafel are the best in New Haven. The falafel was actually light and fluffy! The food is fresh and flavorful. In a city crowded with ethnic restaurants, Rawa is a standout. The avocado salad was wonderful- a great change from guacamole, and the momyaldi pizza with oven roasted tomatoes, carmelized onions, and eggplant was out of this world. I will be returning soon and often. A plus, lots of vegan choices! read more

Went to eat at Rawa for quick bites Friday and was very disappointed. Our drinks took forever the server was average and the falafel was not good. I'm not sure what people are talking about unless they don't go out that often. Mamouns is only true place in New Haven for falafel... everything else is a waste of time. read more

First visit via YELP reviews. Ordered humus, chopped salad, and babaganoush. The chopped salad was not tebouleh-like so disappointing. The humus and baba were lacking flavor and even adding requested lemon, still tasted bland. The red pizza was okay, not my kind of pizza / flatbread. The lamb pizza was what I was excited to try and I found the red sauce to be overpowering and too much sauce. The lamb did not carry the load flavor wise so the experience failed. The staff is really GREAT. The atmosphere is very nice, but I won't return. The other reviews contradict my review so I wouldn't avoid RAWA. read more

I had a party a week ago and ordered 10 pizzas for takeout. The pizzas were ready on time and all the guests loved them. My favorite is the lamb pizza but they are all unique and delicious in their own way. I also go out to eat here often and the staff and owners are such great people! read more

We had our wedding reception dinner at Rawa and the food was phenomenal. My husband's family does not have very adventurous taste, but they loved the food! The staff was professional and prompt. The pacing of the meal was great and everyone left the meal feeling very full in the most pleasant way. Highly recommend! read more

I'm not sure if the food tastes good because it has been an hour since we were seated and no food has yet reached our table. The tables that were seated after us received their food first, and no there was no free pita bread to satiate our hungry table. Their bathroom is pretty clean, though. read more

I've been to Rawa many times & will absolutely return again! The food is delicious, they have incredible cocktails, & I have not one complaint on the service. I've sat at both a table & the bar. My server was quick to make menu suggestions and even helped me to alter the recipe of my drink due to an allergy. The cocktail I wanted had a juice in it I couldn't have so she made me a special "edition" of that cocktail so I wouldn't be disappointed- she did an amazing job. Not often do you get a server who really goes out of their way to make your experience great- we'll be requesting her next time. I am already looking forward to returning! read more

Okay, first off, I never knew about this place, it's kind of a hidden gem in New Haven. It is fresh Mediterranean food with a twist. There are a lot of different options on the menu to choose from, since it's Med-fusion. I got the baby lamb ribs, those were perfect and had the perfect balance of flavor and texture. My husband enjoyed the Rawa Pizza and truly enjoyed it. Everything tasted so fresh and made with love. We wish we could have ordered everything off the menu LOL! The customer service was excellent, definitely would come back again to try more off the menu. read more

Best tasting, most unique roasted vegetable pizza I have ever tasted. My only regret is that I didn't order a second pie to take home. We started with the hummus dip which I could tell was fresh made to order. So delicious. Spent some time talking with the owner who was very friendly and accommodating. We can't wait to visit again read more

My friends and I had a great time dining at Rawa! We all split some pita, pizza, and the chicken brochette, which were all fantastic!! The vibe of the restaurant is great--with a friendly and swift staff, including our server Jasmine, who was great!! We don't usually go to Mediterranean places, so we were pleasantly surprised to enjoy the unique twist Rawa offers! We will definitely be back ! read more

Rawa is the real deal. Authentic, fresh, reasonably priced and delicious. The owner is new to Westville, but had successful restaurants in NYC before coming to New Haven. I look forward to an expended menu (hopefully!) as Rawa settles in here. Love the communal tables - handcrafted by a local craftsperson. The decor is casual, but smart. Service is quite good, though the restaurant was only take-out when it first opened. My only complaint is that it is closed on Mondays, but can not begrudge people a day off. Probably a smart move on their part, as not a big restaurant crowd on Monday nights. read more

Incredibly bad. Ordered food only to have the waitress come back to our table 45 minutes later and ask what we had ordered. Then told us it would be another 20 minutes. And it wasn't even busy. Waitress was lovely and apologetic but this place ain't gonna make it if they can't even produce two dinners from their very limited menu. No manager intervention. Nothing. Won't be going back. read more

We got take out from Rawa last night (only take out while they finish remodeling)-and it was fantastic. The fresh pita bread alone is worth the trip, and everything else we had was excellent. Grilled chicken salad had a great lemony dressing and two slices of grilled fennel on the side that were incredibly tasty. Shrimp biryani had a bunch of large shrimp cooked just right. Overall, the food had really interesting and delicate flavors. Very friendly people, too. read more

The lentil soup was decent, though nothing particularly memorable. I also tried the Merguez, a special lamb sausage that was new to me. It had a unique flavor, though I found it a bit too salty for my taste -- not sure if that's typical for the dish or just how they prepare it here. Rawa is a new restaurant that is serving take-out for the first stage of their two-stage opening. I ordered Falafel which was amazing. I got six large ones that I shared with my husband. It was hot, tender, yummy and moist! The hummus was tasty and very creamy and the salad was lemony, just the way I like it. And I ordered lentil soup which was steaming hot. I was expecting lots of lentils, like a hippy lentil stew but this was a thin puree that was delicious with roasted onion floating on top. And a nice warm flat bread to top it off! I will be ordering a lot of take-out and when they open, I will be there often. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the amount of food in the order. I've tried this place out for take-out when it first opened,and I loved the food. My boyfriend and I decided to go in for dinner last night, and we were not disappointed! We ordered the hummus (soo good) and the Momyaldi pizza.I love lamb, and there aren't many places around here where you can get it. The flavors were incredible, and I loved how the vegetables on the pizza were fresh and roasted to perfection.The vibe is really open and friendly; we even ran into a couple of our friends from the neighborhood. We got takeout from Rawa over Labor Day weekend, and were able to sample many of the dishes on the menu: hummus, eggplant salad, lentil soup, falafel, chicken wings, shrimp biryani, eggplant & lamb pizza... everything was absolutely delicious. Standouts included the chicken wings, which were perhaps the best we've ever had, and the eggplant & lamb pizza, which was just perfect. Not sure where to start from, Ive never tried an eggplant pizza before but after having it I would definitely go for it again. Falafel with tahini was one of my favorite, crispy from the outside and soft from the inside you can tell it was made fresh and cooked to perfection.
