Worst service ever. Waited about 3 hours for food. There were 6 tables that were being served at the time. Had a party of five ask for separate checks . Three for my party and two for the next party. Put on a 20% tip automatic on my bill. Told them to take it off . Told me not to come back. read more

We came for lunch and had the best experience. The food is off the charts good. We started with the freshly baked warm bread with honeyed butter and with a nice salad- all included -which is sadly a rarity nowadays. We then had the sole which was done with fresh flavorful tomatoes, olives and capers with fresh green beans and roasted potatoes on the side. The chicken Parmesan was cooked to perfection with a thick and rich sauce. The pasta on the side had a different sauce with more garlic which was excellent. This meal was large enough for a full lunch, with leftovers for a second meal. The portions, atmosphere, attentiveness, quality and flavor, all 5++ stars! Ct has some of the best Italian food. This place did not disappoint. My 95 year old grandfather and his best friend, and 82 year old Italian American, found this spot on the way back from an appointment. They have been telling me about it for 10 months- and it was so worth it! We came in when they weren't busy, only a few other people. Fast service, not talkative but still friendly, and everything came quickly. On to the food: The calamari is it we loved it. The salmon was fantastic, although there were a few more bones than I liked. Soup and chicken were great too! Do yourself a favor and check this place out! read more

Only giving 4 stars as it was our only time here, but it was a 5 star experience for our first time. Took our 3 kids here (2,4,7) and they had a kids menu. My son loved his pasta and meatballs, my husband loved his veal, and my lil 2 yr old daughter ate all my sausage and most chicken out of the rigatoni special. Yum! Great choice of wine from our waiter that went with it and ended with an espresso. Tables, floors, and bathrooms were very clean as well. read more

Got the Pollo pasta dish and was beyond great . The bread with the honey-garlic butter is your first favor and it brings the taste buds rising. When we walked in for the first time, we were taken in by the beautiful ambiance. We sat by a window where the outside plants framed the window and were well maintained, including real green grapes. The window made me feel like I was sitting in Italy, with Italian-style decor and music. Aiden, our server could not have been more excellent, accommodating our every need. The food and wine were excellent, with large portions. And, the price of our bill was very reasonable for what we ordered. Our family, 13 of us, needed a place to eat on Mother's Day after our grandsons nearby lacrosse games. My daughter picked this restaurant on the app Open Table. It was wonderful. The ambiance was lovely. The service was great. We had a wonderful waitress. The food was incredible. I'm 76 and have eaten out a lot. This Place used to be great. It has gone way downhill. I ordered a special which was supposed to have 1/2 a chicken. I was served TWO legs and a thigh. I suspect that this review is for another restaurant, but, because the spirit shown in the review is the same as mine, I'll agree with it. Carmine's is really quite elegant....far from "a hole in the wall," and even lunch is a most elegant experience. The salad served is crispy, and, don't forget the creamy Italian salad dressing! Just had another great experience at Carmine's. The place was hopping while still following all social distancing . They even had outdoor seating under a tent with a couple of fire pits burning. We have been regular customers of Carmine's Tuscan Grill for years and were very disappointed when they closed. Driving by last week, I noticed they re-opened under a new name. We made reservations and dined there Friday. Gone are old, dusty low hanging plastic grapes & vines, giving the place a brighter and more open feel. If fact, the new lighting could be dimmed down a bit. The food is still great. I suggest the veil with lobster in a cognac cream sauce. My date's chicken parm. was a huge portion and half was brought home. I much prefer elegant dining here than trying to find parking on Wooster Street. read more

Everything we ordered (penne ala vodka, eggplant parmigiana, sausage and peppers and fried mozzarella) had so much flavor, our mouths were watering and watering as we were eating! I use to think this was one of the best Italian restaurant in New Haven for fine dining. It had Wonderful southern Italian cuisine & a great waitstaff, tremendous wine list and good atmosphere. Sadly no longer. They are slipping sorry to say. Service was barely adequate. They denied that we had made a reservation set three people, and a table for two in the waiter was very unattentive. And two of our entrées were undercooked one of which had to be returned. I had to ask the waiter four times to get a glass of water on the plus side the vast majority of food was very good and it was a very busy night, but did not feel as good as it used to in the dining experience wasn't superior like in the past. This was a special dinner with two other close friends, and we all walked away, disappointed in the dining experience, and the prices like many other fine food restaurants have gone up substantially. I tried this place after getting a Groupon and will probably not go back again. Walking in it has a nice atmosphere, I think the place has been newly remodeled. The menu selection for pasta was small. We started off with ordering a calamari...and it was the worst calamari I've ever had. The sauce is poured completely over the calamari which causes the calamari to taste soggy and stringy. The batter was falling off many of the pieces. We were just there for lunch so instead of pasta we decided to get salads. The portions for salad were decent sized. The prices range from $20-30 for the pasta and entrees. read more

I had been a frequent customer of Carmines. I was so disappointed when I found a long black hair in my food and brought it to the owners attention and he completely dismissed me. Mind you, I have short blond hair and my guest had short black hair. The owner stated that it could not have come from his restaurant or his Chef's. Needless to say, on the previous visit, there was a gentleman in the restaurant with his dog. The animal was in a dog carrier that he could stand up in. The gentleman ordered the dog the Chicken and asparagus meal. The dog bowl was on the table, the owner brought the meal over, the food was put in the bowl, and the dog began to eat. Come on now, how sanitary can this be? The owner stated that this man comes in every week, and he tips him very well. Is this acceptable? All For the Love of a dollar. SMH, NEVER AGAIN!!! read more

To me the prices here felt way too high for the amount and the quality of the food. Why is a piece of chicken with sauce on it and a side of pasta over 20 dollars? The food was ok, but not to a level where I could justify these prices. I think at most my dish should have been around 14 dollars. Especially because of the location of the restaurant. It wasn't in a down town area filled with people. This restaurant is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. My dad and I were only in this area because we were coming back from a funeral and stopped for food on the way home. I will say that the server was nice, he was trying very hard to do everything himself. There were 5 or 6 tables when we got there and it seemed like he was the only one working the whole room. No host, bartender, other servers or food runners. Service was a bit slow, but I really felt like that guy was trying his best given the situation he was in. read more

And that's when it started hair in our food and no apologies from management, the hair was actually cooked in the calamari. Lovely aromas meet you when you walk in the door of this welcoming casually elegant restaurant. We started with the grilled portabello and tore di melenzane for the antipasto course -- shared them around to general approbation. I especially liked the lemon shallot sauce with the firm perfectly cooked portabello, but the eggplant dish was very good too. In traditional Italian cuisine, our family prefers the pasta dishes: We ordered the pappardelle alla Vega, gnocchi pomodora, and the rigatoni alla bolognese. The papparadelle were excellent, with the tomato cream sauce having just the right balance, and lobster is a delight. The gnocchi had an especially nice mouthfeel. The bolognese was nicely done but a little on the bland side. Crisp, tasty salads made a nice contrast. Portions are generous, so we will be enjoying left-overs for lunch. I can't speak to the table service or the wine list as we did take-out. Will be back. read more

My first time trying Carmine's was last night and I was more than pleased! The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered takeout and when I got my food it was still nice and hot! I ordered the linguine gamberi Madeira and the pollo arrotolate and both were so tasty and satisfying. My boyfriend split the dishes and I couldn't pick which one I liked more! Working out the kinks. Had dinner on 9/7. Although just a twosome, almost 2 1/2 hours from beginning to end (no appetizers, no desserts). Service was very slow. No wine menu yet. Bread was good, salad dressing over-vinegared. Entrees (Linguini pescatore and one of the specials, whole-fish branzini) were good, but not exceptional. I give 1 star for the service and appetizers. The dinner was not good the brandy sauce for the Vitello di Vega had broken down, and no flavor and was served with deep-fried diced potatoes? Menu stated choice of pasta, the the chicken with vegetables and garlic sauce, well the chicken was a cut up fillet and not a breast of chicken as the menu stated and the garlic sauce, I think they forgot the garlic, the cheesecake was not made there not even from a bakery but a factory made type cheesecake, and the crème bullae well very dry and no flavor, and the cappuccino, served i big mugs like you would expect from a coffee house not a fine dinning for after dinner. That's why you get so disappointed when you make the effort to go to a 5 star restaurant and pay a lot of money when it was less than good. When you try a new restaurant and everything is perfect, you don't forget it. You just hope it wasn't a fluke. Carmine's Tucson Grill located at 1500 Whalley Avenue in New Haven is that restaurant. We tried this restaurant over a year ago and can't stop coming. We have brought family and friends. Never disappointed and always leave full and with leftovers!! The only thing that tops the food at Carmine's is the owner and staff. We are greeted with a handshake and hug. Owner Antonio makes sure your dining experience is perfect. This restaurant should be packed every night with a waiting list. When you go, bring your appetite and expect to relax to a fantastic combination of great food and even greater people. As a frequent visitor to Carmine's Tuscan Grill, I was sad that they closed. But when I heard that they re opened their doors, I was more than happy to come back. I have read some of the negative reviews and to me that doesn't make any sense. Antonio and the staff makes you feel at home and they will cater to your needs . While their menu is small, they will be more than willing to make you something that you might want but isn't on their menu. To me that is great Every meal that I have there has always come out to my liking and my guests as well. I am particularly fond of their Veal dishes! I wish them all the best of luck.
