Ray Jr. and Mrs. Johnson, his mom, were amazingly helpful to me in repairing my 1976 Vermont Casting stove. I will give you the back story to highlight how much I appreciate them. I had hired Jamie Ness of All Pro Fireplaces to re-install a wood stove. It had been temporarily moved to allow the chimney and fireplace to be rebuilt. Our agreement was specifically for him to install a metal flue to the top of chimney to reduce backdraft. The first time he came - he installed the flue just past the smoke shelf. He even took pictures of it! When I refused to pay him he said, "I forgot you wanted it all the way up." He came back a week later and installed a proper length flue. He also installed a larger flue cap by way of apology. I paid him in full. A few days later I start up the stove. Within minutes smoke is pouring out from the heat shield behind the stove. I don't mean little puffs - it was the majority of what the fire was producing!!!! I called Jamie to explain what was going on and offered to show him the video. He said he'd come by to look at it in a few days. Note for later: at this point griddle lid was working fine. He did return. NOT ONLY HAD HE FORGOTTEN TO SEAL THE CONNECTION - HE HADN'T CONNECTED IT AT ALL! Or as he said it "might have come loose". Yeah - no screws or fasteners will do that to you! I went to check everything after he left only to find out he'd snapped the hinges off the griddle lid. See photos showing bright raw metal. He must have known he did it because when I went to look for the pieces in the ashes there were none. (I was hoping I could have them welded.) I called Jamie but he would not answer. I sent a text with photos and asking if he intended to replace the hinges - he never responded. So he forgets to do the work as agreed. Forgets to connect the flue. And breaks the hinges off the wood stove. This guy is a walking train-wreck. I wouldn't let him build a doghouse much less work on something as critical as a fireplace. On to Ray Johnson's. I called to see if by chance they could order replacement parts for an old as Vermont Casting Vigilant. Ray Jr. said, "I don't think so, but let me check around." He called back a few hours later. Mrs. Johnson had remembered having some VC parts in a box left over from an old display. Not only were they the right parts but they charged me WAY less than the original price!!!!!!!!! Their kindness and know-how took the sting out of a bad situation. THANKS MRS. JOHNSON FOR HAVING SUCH AN INCREDIBLE MEMORY, AND TO YOU RAY JR. FOR YOUR PROFESSIONALISM AND COURTESY. I purchased a gas log Fireplace set in 2008 from this company. Not having used the fireplace since last year I had some trouble with the gas logs staying lit. I spoke with Mr. Johnson Sr. who had a record of my Model number and then he walked me thru the proper cleaning process. Mr Johnson stayed on the phone with me step by step . All was fine and just needed to clean the air intake saving me a service call. This is a company that stands by their products. Can not imagine this level of service with a big box store. Ray Johnson's is a fantastic, locally owned family business. Ray's is my number one choice for anything related to indoor gas fireplace inserts and outdoor gas and charcoal grills. Their selection is top notch and their prices are extremely competitive. Just last month, I took a fireplace log back in that I purchased from them 10 years ago! Within 15 minutes, they cleaned the log as well as ordered me a replacement! They even gave me a retail bottle of log cleaner solution to take home. I challenge anyone to find this kind of personal service from the big guys (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.). Ray Johnson's delivers, the others do not. Period.
