We were in Monroe for Soccer and we wanted some good food. We found the right spot! It's a little place with a lot of love and flavor! The staff was very welcoming and playful with us when we entered. It reminded me of a small cafe in my hometown and the atmosphere was the same! My parents both had sandwiches, the roast beef and the Philly cheesesteak. My kids had the mini corn dogs and chicken nuggets. My kids are very picky eaters but both cleaned their plates! I intended to try the shrimp poboy, but the burger caught my eye. So I had the cheeseburger and added bacon. My parents and I got gravy and let me tell you it was the awesome! We enjoyed the sandwiches so much that we ordered 3 shrimp poboy's to take home and they were just as good as if we ate them in the restaurant. And before leaving, we all got some of the homemade ice cream.. so good!! Next time we're passing through or in town, we will be stopping here!!! 10 out of 10 highly recommend!! read more

I always order the same thing when I visit Ray's. I get their double fried pork chop meal with rice, green beans, and corn on the cob. The pork chops can be a bit thin and salty but fried extra crispy with nice flavor. The portions of the sides could be larger and have more seasoning, but the overall meal is fulfilling. Visited family in West Monroe last weekend and tried Ray's PeGe for the first time (they'd all been going their whole life.) SO GOOD! Such a cool little place and the service was excellent! For a place that advertises "World Famous Poboys," this was one of the most unremarkable, disappointing sandwiches I've ever had in my entire life. The only thing I can figure is they are famous for being so bad. These don't even deserve to be called Poboys. A couple of slices of cold roast beef with a very nondescript, substandard gravy on the side doesn't cut it. If this place was in a location with any decent competition they would go out of business in no time at all!. The one redeeming factor was a waitress who kept our drinks topped off. Dropped in here for lunch and had the beef tip lunch plate with green beans and turnip greens. Oh my Goodness!!!!! This was the best beef tips I have ever had!!!! This is the locals hangout for meals. Small seating area but the flow was fast and the food is amazing!!!! This what the south is known for good food and great people that love to cook awesome food. We were looking for seafood poboys and ended up here. I asked what they were best at and she suggested the roast beef po-boy. My husband got 1/2 shrimp/1/2 roast beef with onion rings. I got fries. Fries, onion rings and gravy were delicious. The bread was perfect but I wasn't impressed with the two slices of roast beef with all that bread. Not sure if you can get double meat? I stopped in Monroe while driving through LA, and I saw that this place was listed as one of the top po-boys in the state, so I just had to stop by! And I have to say, the food was pretty incredible. I got the fried shrimp po-boy with fried okra, and my brother got the same thing but with fries. They also came with their own cup of gravy. It was so all so good! The reason I wouldn't give it a 5 star rating is because of the general ambiance, as the place was generally untidy and didn't have a really clean vibe. But I must say, the service was great! I originally ordered my meal with fries on the side, and only afterwards I wanted to change it to okra. Even though it was a few minutes after ordering, and even though the okra was a dollar or two more expensive, the person behind the counter didn't skip a beat. He updated the order, shouted something tot he kitchen, and it was done. I also have to say that their other food looked incredible as well, such as the burgers. To be so highly recommended by others I was utterly disappointed. Apparently they're known for their ribeye poboy sandwiches. Well, it'll fill your belly, but it was simply average at best to me. It was bland even with the gravy. I make better gravy than this. It needed some salt, just like the meat did. There were way too many flies flying around while I ate. Ray's Pege.....I have been eating here since I was a little bitty girl. Well, as long as I can remember. If you want to share a slice of my childhood with me, head on over and take a seat at ANY table. I guarantee you, I have had my bottom in every seat in the place. It's a divey little place that serves comfort food. Pege's is known for their Po-boys. Let me say, if you are trying to compare these po-boys to a South Louisiana style Po-boy, don't. They are not the same type of sandwiches. These are not sloppy over stuffed monsters that drip down your arms (which I love by the way) they are just six or so inches of a flavor packed sandwich that develops with every bite. Lean back, relax and try it for flavor, not comparison. They are delicious. The gravy is so good and the fries have a texture unlike any I have had anywhere else. Dip everything in the little cup of gravy and enjoy with a cup of iced tea. All too soon, the sandwich will be gone and you will consider licking the plate. The burgers aren't bad, and a lot of people like the curly fries. I am a purist however, and eat only the original fries. If you are a little cash strapped, try the barbeque sandwiches. Last time I was in there, they had them on special, 2 for a dollar. After your meal settles, grab some of their ice cream; again, the texture is like no other. I love it; it has an almost gritty feel to it. This is a good thing. So head to Lakeshore, a neighborhood in the suburbs of Monroe, Louisiana and share a piece of North Louisiana history with anyone who has ever called it home. Oh how it hurts me to only give Ray's a 3....and it's a weak 3 at best....my childhood memories of those great & tasty Roast Beef po boys with the gravy on the side for dipping plus those handcut fries is what's getting it the 3 after my first meal here in years... Now to why I love this diner...it is and has always been a true hole in the wall...tiny with about 9 or 10 booths....the ambience HAS NOT changed & for that I'm thankful....but I'm sure ol' Ray has passed on to that great open grill in the sky and if a family member has taken over then shame on them for ruining my memories of that Roast Beef po boy...if some one new has taken over from the family then double shame on them for messing with perfection!! The roast beef didn't look like fresh roast beef it looked like a thick cut of some processed roast beef...hell now that I think about it after hours of contemplation driving back south, and I contemplated believe you me....staff could have effed up and give me a Turkey po boy...either way that is simply unforgivable!! Now the fries and the gravy were as wonderful as memories have recalled... Ah, first to review PeGe! Well Ray's is known for one main thing and that is Po-Boys. I order a full beef Po-Boy and it comes with gravy and fries, on a lightly buttered toasted bun. It sounds so basic and simple, but I've yet to find anywhere in the world that gets it done like PeGe. In New Orleans there are legendary places like We Never Close which have great seafood Po-Boys, but I can't say that they are necessarily better. Yes, in its own way, PeGe is the Chez Panisse or French Laundry of beef Po-Boys - it is that good. You will most likely have to stand in line for tens of minutes just to order, and another few minutes of awkward non-eye contact making standing by the register to find a seat, but by the time you're sitting, the food is almost ready. They also sell excellent BBQ minced beef sandwiches for something like 3 for a buck - crazy. The high level of quality has been assured for years by Ray, the owner of the place, working daily right there on the food assembly line. However, though I've heard that this has changed, the food was still good this past Christmas. If Ray's declines, I will vow to take their secrets to the West coast for posterity's sake. read more

This place has been around since the beginning of time. I remember coming here at a very young age and loving their hamburger with fries dipped in their famous gravy. My parents were all about the Po Boys. There would always be a wait. It would be a while before you would get a table, but it was so worth it once you sat down. I ate here on 9-4-13 for lunch. I will compliment the service first which was very good. Erica and Tina were attentive to all the customers despite it being very busy. The fact that this place was pack doesn't change the fact that my meal wasn't that great. I had 2 of the smallest chicken breast ( grilled) I've ever had in a restaurant in my life. If these were any smaller you'd think they came from a Cornish Hen. They were well cooked just a bit salty. After wiping it off with a napkin it was okay. I also purchased the mashed potato and gravy. The gravy was a brown flavorless glob and the potatoes were also flavorless. This place is pretty good if you are looking for a home-style old-fashioned diner. We were hoping for some po'boys and we usually frequent Papa Joes po'boys in Ruston but they were closed for the day. With some out of towners visiting and really craving some Louisiana Cajun food, we yelped the next best thing. Ray's PeGe popped up on my Yelp app. The reviews seemed pretty decent. So off we went for the 20 minute trek to get some cajun food. We walked in to Ray's a bit surprised at first, some of the lights are missing outside and it just says Ray's P i think. We were instantly greeted by a friendly staff member. She took our order at the counter, as the signs prompt you to order first. We saw the paper menu had all sorts of seafood po'boys (oyster, crawfish, fried shrimp, grilled shrimp) but on the real menu only shrimp was shown. The owner came over and said that only shrimp was available. They told us the grilled was better and bigger. So we all ordered the grilled shrimp, come to find out, they were all out of them. So our orders were switched to fried shrimp in the end. It was kind of a challenge to order as we split our orders and had a small mishap, miscommunication with the worker at the front... but it all got figured out. We soon after sat at a booth. The food came out quick and we all had no complaints about our fried shrimp po'boys, mashed potatoes, green beans, and sweet tea. Everything was delicious. The owner (I think she was) came over and chatted us up a bit, was very nice, and offered us some homemade fresh ice cream to finish our meals. We left pleasantly happy and satisfied. However, was it the best po'boy or food I've had? Not really. Was it worth the 20 minute drive? I doubt it. But overall, it's worth it if hungry and in the area. read more

I purchased a shrimp po'boy and, it was fried shrimp on a sam's club bleached, generic style hoagie and served with frozen french fries. My girlfriend, got the catfish option with curly fries (which were also from a bag). Not impressed, my girlfriend puked later. Fast-food with a personable old building and a loyal fan-base. I guess what I'm trying to articulate is I was expecting something 'home-made' or 'authentic' and what I got was Wal-mart deli grade food and styrofoam containers.
