I have watched Bill since on network tv and all his specials. I agree with many of his opinions. However, once he got on the anti woke bandwagon to appease the far right and look balanced, I think he chose the wrong path. I am having so much trouble finding tickets for this show, it has been a nightmare :( ! Does anyone know someone who works at the studio who can give me free tickets? I am in love with the show. I truly watch seeing, hearing, and knowing the Bill Maher HBO show as a true benefit and resource. Bill always states and shows a variety things that are neat and sweet to understand and enjoy!!! When Bill speaks first at his show, he very gives insight, comedy, and rational sections to us think and know what are cool and sweet!! Then when he as an individual, Bill asks and all that person states to him!! So it is incisive knowing a rational basis to hear and understand both him and that person!! Also, with Bill having three individuals on that show with him, he asks and they respond to all of know what and how are being brought in a comment for all!! Some time it is laughing yell and scream by all three of them and him. However, it comes very funny and providing to all a irrational person they are speaking as a grump!! Was a super great experience for my family and I. Be sure to get there early for better seating! The man who brought us in, Mike, was super cool and took every groups picture that wanted one with the set. I would recommend leaving your cell phone behind or else you'll be stuck waiting in line at the end to get them back with everyone else, since they check them into security for you before yoy go in. Also BRING YOUR ID, they need it to let you in, no exceptions. The shows head writer was also super great and funny and ran us through a how the filming would go in addition to warming us up for show time with a few jokes. This is so much fun!!! I met Mike Wood (great guy) at Hollywood and Highland (Walk of Fame/Hard Rock Cafe) and he gave me a ticket to the rehearsal on Thursday. If you have time, this is awesome! You get all of the Friday jokes and then some. It's just Bill Maher (no guests) and they are testing the material for the Friday live show. If they have space for the Friday show, they'll try to hook you up. Getting tickets on-line are difficult, so this is may be a good way to get into the Friday show. Time permitting, Mike Wood will take a photo of you at the Friday show and email it to you (no cell phones allowed, either day) If you only have one Thursday in town, this is a great way to spend the afternoon and it's FREE! My wife and I went to the live 7PM show on 9/29 and we had such a great time. We love watching Bill Maher and we even schedule our Friday night meals around the time of his live show. The highlight of the show we saw was a chronology that Bill did of the Russian meddling and collusion, complete with a bulletin board of pictures and Bill's hilarious nicknames for all of the corrupt players. We want to thank Mike Wood at the show, as he was so nice to us by letting us sit upfront in the "rowdy" section and, he took a picture for us to have as a great memento! Experience a live show if you can, the amount of preparation and effort that goes into creating one episode is impressive and the best part is you don't have to do any of it. Just sit back in the air conditioned studio, feel the energy of the audience, and enjoy the show. The live show starts at 7PM PST. Expect the following: Line #1 on Fairfax Blvd. Expect to be here until 5:15PM. Line #2 occurs after they check IDs. They're going to separate you in groups according to how you made your reservation and you can expect to wait on benches, some of them in the sun, until 6PM. Line #3 is for the metal detectors, phone checkin, and studio. This is the shortest of all lines. You won't be in the actual studio until after 6PM. *Almost forgot, there will be times where the audience noise makes it difficult to hear the people on stage. Get over it, it's part of being in a live audience. Do's: Bring your ID but otherwise travel light. Arrive early and you'll get a better seat, that was our experience, the downside is you'll be waiting in line on Fairfax Blvd in the hot sun. Bring a cold beverage while you wait in line, you can't bring it into the studio with you but it will save you from having to buy a small bottle of water for $5. You have an opportunity to use the bathroom prior to going inside the studio...use it. The studio will be cool and if you're trying to hold your bladder for the 1.5 hours you're inside it's probably not going to be fun. Dont's: Bring your cellphone. You have the option of getting a claim ticket and checking it in but honestly that's just another line you're going to have to make after the show and few of us are important enough that the world is going to suffer if we're away from our devices for 2 hours. Don't be uptight. If you think something is funny, laugh out loud. Really. Lot's of people like to write LOL in texts, IMs, and email but few people actually know how to laugh out loud. Lastly, do not attempt to approach the stage or physically engage with anyone on stage. You're part of the audience and they're supposed to entertain you...let them do their job. I normally wouldn't mention this but somebody must have done something stupid at some time because I saw a K-9, metal detector, and at least two plain clothes security close to the stage. I don't remember seeing all of this last time so I wasn't sure if it was because somebody was stupid or they were overly cautious for the anniversary of September 11th. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE! If you're a fan of Bill Maher, then I would definitely make the effort to come to a taping! And when I say, "effort", I do mean it. We got there at 5pm and there was already a long line of people waiting outside of the studio. A lovely gentleman walked through the line to tell us to keep our phones in the car because if not, we would have to check them in and wait in a longer line on the way in and on the way out as well. (I'm glad I listened to him, because after the taping, I was ready to go home and would've been annoyed having to wait more). We waited outside for about an hour and then were shuffled closer to the studio and into 3 separate lines (depending on where we got our tickets). After passing these lines and metal detectors, we were moved to another waiting area outside. There, we waited on benches (near a bathroom and food for purchase) for another hour. We were shown a video about how the writing and taping happens, which was pretty interesting. Finally, we were let inside and sat down to meet one of the writers, who played another video for us before the taping began. The stage was super close to us and we could hear everything perfectly (despite what other reviewers said). The audience was incredibly fun and Bill Maher was definitely into it as well. There was an EXCELLENT line up and a ton of Trump jokes (who could resist?!). I'm not bothered by the waiting, and quite frankly, I wouldn't have cared if we waited longer, as I was having a blast speaking to those around us about politics! DEFINITELY worth it! read more

This was fun. I sent an email to the address on the website and was called a week or so later on a Wednesday and was put on the list. Arrive at 5:15. Line goes in at 5:30. Taping starts promptly at 7:00 and ends at around 8:10. After going in they line you up just outside the studio at about 6:00. There are benches to sit on and a short video to watch. At about 6:30 you sit down inside and one of the writers warms up the crowd. He was funny. The show then began and the guests were very good. They were all very engaging and entertaining. Bill Maher was great. The Grove is then right next to the CBS studio and we got something to eat and had a drink after. It gets cold inside so it is a good idea to take something light to cover up. Also, they do not allow phones inside so either leave it in the car or they have you check them in. I will return. read more

I HAD A FREAKING BLAST! I'm obsessed with the show, so It occurred to me one day that if I wanted to, I could go see it live instead of watching it at home on the DVR. So I e-mail and request tickets. Wasn't expecting to hear back so quickly! I get a call a couple days later, and bam, 4 tickets were all mine! Woo! Yes, you do have to wait. We got there around 5:30, like we were told. It wasn't a big deal though. You will have to rely on the sparkling conversation of your party members though, because they will be taking your precious phone away from you. The studio was MUCH smaller than I was expecting. We had seats in the middle, but even if you were seated in the back, it would be fine. There were a couple jokes I didn't catch, I think due to the audience's laughter, so I kind of wish the mic on Bill was louder, but whatever. Loved being able to stay for over time, we also got to hear some extra new rules! Good times were had, I want to go back! In fact, I want to go every week! I have sent in numerous e-mail requests through the blog, and have attempted to call several times to no avail? What is the deal here? How do you actually obtain tickets? Trying to plan the trip to LA, but haven't done it yet as we are now, impatiently waiting, to get some sort of feedback. I like Real Time with Bill Maher a lot. More often than not the discourse on the show is intelligent and irreverent. Also I think Bill's delivery is outstanding, he's a genuinely funny guy. So I was pretty excited when I was able to score tickets to the show. I called in a couple weeks before the taping, but didn't hear back until a couple days before the show. Not sure if this is typical or because we were bringing a somewhat larger group. We showed up at 5:30 like they said, but that proved to be a little on the late side. We were pretty near the back. If I were to go again I'd show up closer to 5 or a little before. The taping itself was pretty straight forward. Not as much waiting around as you get with other shows. Get in around 5:30, you can take off by about 8:30 with plenty of time to do something else that night. The producer who warms up the crowd really wasn't funny at all. We honestly kind of wished he would leave the crowd alone so we could chat. Also it was a little strange that they played old clips from the show before the taping began instead of having Bill Maher interact with the audience. He was very distant in general. When the audience laughed, he would continue to talk and you couldn't hear what he said. He really seemed to not even notice that the audience was there. He was pretty far back on the stage so it was a little hard to see. Really I ended up watching a lot of it on the TV screens rather than on the stage. All that said, Real Time is a great show. The conversations are interesting and Bill is a great performer. But as far as TV tapings go, this wasn't one of my favorites. If you're a fan of the show, it's worth the time, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who just wants to see a TV taping. There are other, better options. read more

As much as I loved the show and seeing it live added extra energy, the process of getting in loses it a star. I applied for tickets online, received the phone call of when to show up and where, but was not given the whole story. Getting into the live taping, is a bit like going through security for an international flight. There are long lines in the hot sun, security checks that included searching my purse, going through a metal detector, and if I hadn't left my cell phone in the car it would have been taken until the show was over. My daughter and I had a great time, but we would have liked to be told about the wait without air conditioning. I would have brought water instead of paying a huge amount at the studio's food wagon. Note to those who attend: bring water, leave cell in car, bring a jacket or sweater because the studio is kept cool to cold for all the equipment. Most of all remember that this is a show being taped, sight lines will be blocked, at times, for the cameras, but they provide you with monitors when you can't see the action, so have fun and enjoy Maher, he is even more energetic in person and well worth all the hassle to get in. read more

I recommend reading the other reviews for information on line duration, rules, etc (these Yelp reviews were all accurate based on our experience). We found that they have expedited the cell phone issue by essentially "coat checking" them during the security screening process. I wanted to share a pre-caution for folks who might be on vacation or taking family/friends...luckily it was just my husband and I and the studio is 5 blocks from us so our not so good experience wasn't a huge deal. We signed up for a 2pm taping online - our ticket, the website, the emails, the pages, everything all indicated this was an episode taping and it was Live...'business as usual'. It actually ended up being a 30 minute dress rehearsal of the show with no guests, just Bill in street clothes reading his monologue and new rules (which was good, just not what we expected). Had we known this we wouldn't have signed up for this day or wasted 1.5 hours waiting for a dress rehearsal. I just felt bad for tourists and folks that were trying to make an event out of RT w/ BM. I went back and checked through everything when i got home just to confirm I wasn't an idiot and indeed nothing indicated this was out of the ordinary. It seems the 5:15pm timing is pretty safe given that it airs live and there's a 3 hr time difference to ET. Our tickets were for 2pm. Just wanted to give folks a heads up. This could've been an anomaly given the Convention Live special is tonight. read more

Who doesn't love Bill Maher!? Ok ok I guess we know which set of people don't... Great show. Free parking. They did have drinks and snacks to buy when you get past the front gate. Don't forget your ID! As with most TV shows, great crew to help the crowd buzzing... Bill was great as usual. The hour definitely flew by! My only complaint was the female photographer. Chick was in the way THE ENTIRE TIME. Last time I checked, every camera manufacture made longer lenses... ::cough:: 70-200mm so you don't need to be right up in someone's grill to get the shot or ducking under the main cameras every 5 seconds. Horrible distraction to say the least and blocked our view 90% of the time. No exaggeration. Nearly ruined the show. TIPS * Get there early, park, then walk to eat at the Farmer's Market or Mendocino Farms. * Leave your cell in your car (takes too long to get it back after the show if you check it in) * Bring a LIGHT jacket. It's not freezing your ass cold but a tad on the colder side. No big deal. * Sit in the middle. Not the left side (crane is in the way). It's a really small studio, so to be honest, every seat in the house is adequate. One of the cool things I noticed was the head writer who got the crowd excited at the beginning was watching on one of the TV's stage right. He would laugh with anticipation at each of the jokes (well, 'his' jokes so to speak) as well as check the audience's reaction in a subtle way. When there was an election brewing, when the White House was a mess and when the mere thought of Sarah Palin as VP would bring me out in a cold sweat, it made sense that we should go along to see a taping of this show. Downsides: Long lines, getting there early, waiting for 90 mins then watching a bunch of 'VIP' types get ushered in first and snag all the plum seats. Upsides: Well we got a goooood night with regards to guests. Actor Alec Baldwin, reporter Christiane Amanpour, comedian Garry Shandling, and journalist Bob Woodward all were on and indeed were on fire with their observations and humor. We snagged some pretty good seats at the back, and were also able to see the close ups via the frigging huge monitors hanging from the ceiling. I would go to another taping of this show in a heartbeat, I just have to find someone at HBO who will swap VIP passes for sexual favors... which might be nice. read more

Definitely a fun Friday night. Yes, there is a lot of waiting (sans mobile phone) and with the way they tape the show, chances are no matter where you sit your view will be obstructed at one time or another during the broadcast. Bring a sweater - that studio is COLD. Also, make sure you get the name of the person you speak with regarding your tickets in case they lose your name or forget to put you on the list. Oh how it pains me to give Bill Maher's live taping 4 out of 5 stars. I'm a huge fan of Bill Maher, just like everyone else going to see the show (but I guess not like everyone, since the group in front of us didn't even know the name of the show they were waiting in line to see). My boyfriend and I planned a trip to LA with the hopes of getting tickets to the show. We've never been to a live taping, so we really didn't know what to expect, but were excited about the experience. 1.) They say to arrive by 5:15, but I definitely recommend going earlier. We arrived at 5:15 and were greeted by a really long line. Seating is first come first serve, so the earlier you are in the line, the more likely you're going to get a seat that's closer to the stage. 2.) remember to bring your I.D. you can also bring your phone, but you'll have to check it in before going through security. You're not able to bring phones into the studio. 3.) plan on waiting. They are very well organized and have everything planned out. At 5:15 the line immediately begins to move, and there is someone checking everyone's ID. After that, you go into another line where you go through security. The last part is waiting outside the studio for 50 minutes. They keep you pretty entertained so the wait isn't that bad. Someone will come out and tell you the rules, and then a behind the scenes video of how the show is put together is played. There are rows of benches so you're able to sit down if you want to. They also have snacks and water that you can buy. 4.) Wherever you sit your view is going to be obstructed at some point, or the whole time by people and cameras. We were probably in the middle of the line, so our seats weren't bad. There is more waiting inside the studio until it's time to air the show. The writer comes out and talks to the audience, and another movie is played. Overall it was a good experience. When watching the show on t.v it seems as though Bill Maher is a little more engaged with his audience, but that's not the case at all when seeing it live. At the end he gave a brief wave and left. He's always hilarious, clever, and entertaining. I understand we were there to see a live taping, so everything would be done for the cameras. I had two absolutely wonderful experiences at live tapings of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher show. Of course, watching Bill Maher's engage a diverse and witty panel on serious and timely political and social topics while injecting his unique sense of humor is a big thrill. Going to a live taping is a truly fascinating experience -- I especially enjoy watching the team working behind-the-scenes to create a seamless and entertaining production. Worth special mention is one particular member of the team, Mike Wood, a man who went far beyond the call of duty to help me on two occasions to bring members of my family who were visiting from the east coast to the taping. First, my father in law - a huge fan of the show in from Massachusetts. Mike met us and gave the old man the real VIP treatment. One month later he is still talking about what a wonderful experience he had at the taping. This week, my father and his partner - also fans of Maher - came in from Florida. Mike went out of his way *again* to ensure that my family was warmly welcomed and made to feel at home. For his help in creating such a positive environment I am truly grateful. A little over a month ago, I went to see the show for the first time. I had a blast save for a minor misunderstanding about VIP seating. I wrote a review and gave the show 4 stars because of the incident. A week ago, I received an email from Mike Wood. The letter basically said he was the guy who made the mistake and he invited me back. First of all, I am amazed that he even bothered to read the review, and then owned up to the mistake. He didn't have to. After all, I didn't even know who he was. An apology was more than enough for me but he also offered to make up for it. How cool is that? I'm a big fan of Real Time and never miss a show. I went to see Real Time last night at CBS. Bill's staff was great. The audience waits 2 hours (1 hour on a bench) and Bill never acknowledges the audience. I guess Real Time has made Bill think he's Big Time and does not need to lower himself to take a minute and say thanks to the live audience. read more
